This was a nice place recommended by my fellow Yelper and friend Angie T. It boasts a great porch and view of the lake and a really nice beer selection. The wine selection was good as well. And the food looked tasty and reasonably priced, especially the tacos at $2.50 a piece. This a good place to come back to and would be even more enjoyable on a cooler day.
Review Source:This is a great bar. You cannot beat the atmosphere, friendly staff, variety of beers or the location of this hot spot. It is always pretty busy on the weekends with an outside lookout to the lake, an inside lounge area and lots of bar space & tables. We enjoy going here and it never lets us down!
Haven't tried any food here yet, but maybe one day!
Outstanding location, Best beer proprietor and best beer selection on the Northshore. Free wifi. A great place to get some work done while sampling some beers you will find nowhere else in the area. Menu is limited but high quality, and fits the establishment. The staff is very knowledgable about their products.
Review Source:The Barely Oak is a pretty nice place. I've been here a couple of times. Great spot on the lake and a wide selection of beer.
I have to say though that it was here that I was presented with the worse hamburger I have ever had. Another patron informed me that if you don't request how you want it done they will give it to you medium rare. At any rate my burger looked closer to rare. It was sopping with grease and very messy. I should have stuck with my first choice and ordered the sausage plate. My buddy ordered that and really enjoyed it.
Other than the bad burger, everything was good on both occasions.
My homebrewing beer geek husband said I better rate this place 5 stars or else. Great craft beer selection, nice ambiance, friend knowledge staff who actually know how to pour, and nice views. The pretzels were so soft and yummy and the mustard spicy heaven. And hey, if you like watered down cheap beer they have that for you too. Go! Go now!
Review Source:I really like The Barley Oak. The beer choices are amazing and the food is good. My hangup on visiting more often is the attitude of the servers.
It has not been once but every time I visit I feel like I owe them just because I walked in. Once I brought in a party of 8 and when asked to see a food menu the guy threw the menus on the table.
I keep going back in hopes of a change in the service quality but I am always let down. Don't get me wrong if you're sitting at the bar the service is OK and you may even get a smile but beyond that its really lacking
The food is good (get the soft pretzel bread for your sandwich!) and they have Guinness on tap!
Great balcony and view. Â
I prefer a quiet atmosphere so we generally go during the day or early evening. Â Can get quite loud at night. Â
My only complaint is that they used to allow kids and now they don't. Â I don't want to bring my kids to a bar, but it would be nice if we could go mid day for lunch with them. Â We used to be able to do this, but I believe they cut down on the amount of food available, which made them a bar not a restaurant.
My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat on a Monday for lunch and stopped by The Barley Oak. This place was GREAT! The view, atmosphere and food was awesome and the service was even better-I apologize that I did not get our servers name, she was very sweet. We had the warm pretzels with spicy dijon mustard, cheese plate, grilled chicken sandwich & cheeseburger. Although we didn't get a chance to enjoy all of the many, many beers on tap, everything was so good! Even though we live in New Orleans, we have a few good burger joints here but, this one was the one that I've been looking for. And many Thanks to our server for her compassion, it wasn't the happiest day for us due to an illness in the family, but she me smile. That really meant a lot.
Review Source:The Barley Oak is becoming one of my favorite Northshore bars.
Located on the Mandeville lakefront, the Barley Oak has an incredible view of the lake, great beer, great food and great staff.
On my most recent visit, it was a busy Saturday night. Despite the crowd we were able to find two spots at the bar. Normally I recommend siting outside to look out on the lake, but it was a bit cold. While we didn't have the great lake view, we received such great service, that the bar may be my preferred spot in the future.
The selection of beers is stellar. There looked to be at least 20 or more on draft with an even greater selection of bottles. We settled on a Fancy Lawnmower from St. Arnold, and a Irish Channel Stout from Nola Brewing. For the next round the bartender offered suggestions. Apparently Nola and Stone Breweries got together and produced a collaboration. I took her recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed the appropriately titled Pour Me Something Mister Porter. It was excellent. Besides making great beer recommendations, the bartender was very friendly, prompt and really made us feel welcome.
Since we hadn't eaten, we ordered a Cajun sausage plate to help soak up some of the beer. Â The platter came with one link each of andouille, alligator and hot sausage. Additionally, there was a side of creole mustard with bread and sauerkraut. This platter was excellent. The sausage was perfectly cooked, and each was a good representation of the particular type of sausage. There were several other food items on their menu, so next time, I will be sure to sample more items.
I found that prices weren't cheap, but were very reasonable considering the location.
There are several stairs to traverse to enter the bar, but there is also an elevator to make it handicap accessible. I would imagine the elevator is also convenient after a few too many drinks since falling down 25 feet of stairs would be no fun.
If you like great beer, views, food and people, check out the Barley Oak.
I have mixed feelings about this place so I need to rate some things individually.
Beer Selection: 5 stars great selections in bottle and draft. Even some local stuff you won't get anywhere else from time to time.
Price $$: 3 stars, most of their beers are reasonably priced with good specials
Staff: 4 stars, most of them are really nice and keep things moving well
Food: 2 stars, this is my biggest complaint. After a few beers we end up stopping somewhere else on our way home because every thing we've eaten other than the German appetizers has been overcooked or flavorless. We stick to the pretzels or sausage plates while drinking.
This is a very nice bar - right on the lake.
Good selection of drafts - including the at times elusive Shiner Bock as well several more or less esoteric micro brews and handful of European beers.
Friendly staff of bartenders, nice atmosphere - the fireplace is a welcome sight on cool nights - friendly patrons, cold beer....what more can you ask for in a local bar?
This is my favorite bar/pub. I came with a friend who wasnt a real hardcore beer drinker and the bartender let her taste a few beers that he thought she would like. The staff was very friendly and nice and clearly enjoyed what they were doing. I felt the prices were pretty moderate especially considering what you get out of it ( great friendly staff, great decor inside and out, an amazing view, and nice fellow customers) I really enjoy this place and I hope to be a regular soon :)
Review Source:More of a bar than a restaurant which we did not know before going there. However, the bartenders/staff were very friendly and helpful in making a beer selection. They have just about everything! I listed a few beers I like and the  bartender came up with a suggestion and I ended up loving it! He was very knowledgeable. I mentioned Yuengling and Fat Tire beers. They didn't have them but he knew all about them and even told me what they were in the works of bringing those beers in and all the politics behind it. Short menu of appetizer foods/sandwiches/salads with no table service but great balcony with great view overlooking Lake Pontchartrain!
GET THE GRILLED CHEESE!
Barley Oak is a fairly decent place to get obliterated and has a nice view to boot...The drinks are a little pricey, but that is typical for Mandeville. Â I would advise using the elevator after getting smashed here. Â Last time I patronized this fine establishment, I drank a liter of rum and then tried to traverse the steep stairs, to my peril, and ended up falling and breaking both of my legs and one of my arms. Â It was horrible, everyone was laughing and making sport of me laying on the ground twisted up like a pretzel. Â When I awoke in the hospital, my wallet, watch and panties were gone, so someone must have robbed me while I was under.
Review Source:Was in town and had a great time on a visit here. Â Bartender and Owner were very friendly, provided good recommendations. Â Had some of the franzikaner hefeweissen (from the bottle, on tap is yet better, as this is the best hefeweissen I have had to date), and they were running a special on Brooklyn Lager, had a few of those (they were ice code from the tap, experts might say too cold, but they went down mightly smoothly).
One of the more interesting parts of the night was the guy next to me at the bar. Â He kinda sounded like the Sling Blade guy, but with every other word being profanity. Â He offered some good beer recommendations, and added some really funny interaction to the evening - in a positive way.
Had a great time here - will likely return sometime in the future.
Nick (owner) and his family have put together a cozy and very welcome addition to old Mandeville and apparently spared no expense. Beautiful hardwood floors, leather sofas and a very inviting fireplace create the perfect setting for drinking a Stella or sipping a scotch. The 5 HDTVs behind the bar don't take away from the ambiance and give you a chance to catch up on news/sports between pints- but if it's a nice day, you should really be out on the patio that overlooks Lake Pontchartrain or people watching on the ground floor.
The beer selection is rock solid and the management is always looking for suggestions on improving the product and service. Hopefully the next major hurricane is decades away as this is my spot for a pint on the Northshore.
Upscale pub with a great selection of light and dark craft beers and knowledgeable staff. I went with 2 others and each ordered 2 beers. All 6 beers were winners that we had never had before. Despite being a really nice place, the prices were very reasonable.
During the week this place was very quiet and mellow. I came back on a Friday night and it was packed with lots of people aged 21-35. On Friday night one of the older female bartenders was a major b***ch, but other than her everyone else was really nice.
