Service was terrible. The waitress seemed to ignore our table and we had to wave down a different waitress to get our check. We had a beer mixed margarita because they didn't have any hard liquor here, only beers.*

Didn't decide to get any food because we were sat by the window where the food was going out and none of it looked good.

**UPDATE: They no longer have the margarita beer mix, never coming here again unless it's an obligatory social event.

I frequented this place quite a bit when it initially opened because of the location and cheap drinks. Service is pretty decent  depending on who waits on you.  The ambiance was ok until they started adding far to much decor. There are plenty of TV's so it's good for a sports night. The food is terrible. It lacks flavor and is very greasy and overall portly made. They recently added a jukebox which was accompanied by a sign notifying all that hip hop, r&b and the like would be skipped if played with zero refund; this alone is pompous at best. Needless to say, I don't go to this place anymore, but good luck if you do.

I was completely ignored trying to get a drink at the bar. I was sitting there, money and ID and hand, trying to get one of the girls attention for 15 minutes before giving up completes and leaving. Yeah...totally coming here again...not...

Great little place during happy hour for a pretty good selection of beers at good prices. My cons are the average food and slow service. First time I went my appetizer didn't get brought out which they cancelled when the entree got to my table and today I had to sit around for basic service and they never brought me a fork I requested twice. Also the chicken nachos used some canned imitation nasty cheese. I don't know, it was okay all and all I guess. Great ambiance for sports though and cheap beers during happy hour. Cool spot, will go back for the next game that's on.

Spot was cool but now they don't have half the things on the menu and shrimp ceviche had about 3 shrimp total. Also the free kids scoop of ice cream wasn't worth it this time,  we can see the cook licking his fingers and using his hand to get ice cream off of scoop.  I encouraged my babies to leave it alone. Would go back but only for beer and sports not the food.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD INVEST IN AIR CONDITIONING OR OPEN THE WINDOWS!
It's always so stuffy in there -_-

Good beer selection and the fact you can play beer pong on the outside patio, genius.

On Saturday, Downey has their Farmer's market. Walking by Bastards we saw their posted specials and decided to give it a try.  We both ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich, fries, and the included beverage (No beer) for $7.00.. I asked for the sweet potato fries, and there was no extra charge...great!! They were delicious. My friend enjoyed the regular fries  The waitress, Lizzette, was very nice. The sandwich was very tasty. I also ordered two burgers to take back to folks at home. The waitress charged one dollar extra per order, but when I asked about it, she quickly apologized and changed the ticket.  All in all, 4 large sandwiches, lots of fries (2 orders were sweet potato), and 4 drinks for $28.00.  It could have cost $14.00 total, but if the food hadn't been good, I wouldn't return.  At $28.00 (VERY reasonable) and a good taste, I will look for the opportunity to dine there again. Hmmm...maybe to check out Taco Tuesday...

Not too close to home, but definitely worth the drive. Lunch n brunch with the kids, dinner with the hubby, family gatherings, or just to watch the game n enjoy a cold beer n good food, I haven't been disappointed yet!  Tonight I had the shrimp taco plate for the first time, wow!

Decor, Atmosphere, food and drinks...Working close by I am always looking for happy hours to hit before heading home...walked into Bastards hoping not to break the bank and get a good buzz....! Mission accomplished! I need to order food for that full 5 stars...as far a prices and hospitality this place is a good time waiting to happen! I'll be back this time to try some good food to compliment the ice cold brew!  "Place is Great, Beer is Cold and Jesse is the man! " - ;)

So, I think I should have ordered something else to eat. Everyone said the pulled pork sandwiches were good, but my group just got appetizers. The spinach and artichoke dip was passable, but the ceviche was peppery and strange. I was only eating it because I was hungry, and I still wouldn't finish it. Ugh.

I'm not a huge beer drinker, so I got an Angry Orchard ale, and that was so good! It was sweet and refreshing, and it didn't really taste like alcohol at all. :)

The owner was there, and he was a doll. Service was top notch, and it was a fun night out. If it weren't for the food, I would have added another star.

It is so obvious that most of the high reviews are from other military that want this place to succeed. I support our military but that doesnt mean that I am going to ignore the lack of wait staff, the waitress making out and being felt up by her boyfriend (the owner). We walked in and there was a guy sitting at a table and he was acting like he owned the place, well it turns out he did. He saw that we hadnt been served yet and didnt come over to us until after he walked his friends out and gave his girlfriend a nice ass grab. The beer was okay but they only have about 8 beers on tap. The food is ok, but by the time it got to us it was colder than it should've been. You will love this place if you are military because you will want to support but for us "others" it just ok.

When ever I come to review a place I like to read others reviews.  Seriously, I find odd at times to be so different, my experiences to others,
First off I've been here a few time incognito, low key and always enjoyed it.
But yesterday they stepped up their game to a four star.  Well earned.

It started out with the food network in the morning.  They were talking BBQ and especially pork ribs.  And the crave with set.
Initially I want Chris n Pitts, forgetting about Bastards, but my biz partner reminded me just in time.  Bastards it is.

Decore:  Ode to the Marines.  Hence Bastards; the 2/5 "Magnificent Bastards".  Like savoring beer in Hanoi or something.  Suggestion: Semper Fi script on the wall above the bar.
Plenty of TV to satisfy your sport viewing needs.

Service:  Love it.  I like a spicy host/waitress/bar tender.  One who can dish and take some banter.  Flirt enough to make me want to order more, yet prep'd to put me in check, with a smile, if I get carried away.  BTW:  her name is Ashley.

Drink: It's beer bar people.  If you want a Margarita. Go to El Torito, lol.  At Bastards it's beer.  And damn good good.  I love that my favorite beer "Arrogant Bastard" is on tap ready to fill a ice chilled pint glass and cool my inner beast.
Plenty of other great beers and priced more then fair, at least a few bucks less then most other places.

Food: We ordered a half rack with side of slaw and onion rings.  The ring, suggested by Ashley, were good.  Light, with unpretentious flavor, not over whelming with that oily feel.  Slaw was good, but then it's tough to mess that up.  Rack was the right size.  It's deep flavors start sweet and end with a slight kick.  The meat itself just melts off the bone like a beautiful mess.

Part two was the pulled pork sliders.  Three delectable sliders filled thick with awesome pulled pork.
I'd tell you that if you're out with friends to watch the Lakers pull another seemingly impossible come back, order the sliders and a beer, then another beer, etc.  By the time everyone's given up on Vino and the yellow n purple boys, get another order of sliders and stay for the W.

Do I recommend Bastards?  Hey, I've been called worse and this Bastards deserves your respect.  Huyaaa!

After watching a movie at the Krikorian, my friend and I wanted a chill place to have a few beers so we chose Bastards. I had a great time. The decor is fun, several tv's, the waiters are nice and attentive, drinks are so cheap and plentiful (variety), and I really enjoyed the choice of music they had on i.e. Rock, 90's alternative, classic rock etc (not top 40/mainstream music). Def coming back!

Decent prices, ok beer selection, didn't try the food. The "bartender" who I believe was one of the owner was nice, but beyond slow in getting us our drinks. Had to remind him numerous times that we were still waiting for our drinks. Again, he was friendly, but waiting 10 minutes for a drink when it's not busy just doesn't seem right. The kitchen is surrounded by windows so you can see the chefs cooking. That's cool and all but when one of the cooks and another employee get into a physical fight, probably not good for business. The entire bar went quiet as people were watching, that was our hint to leave as service only got slower after that.

So in a nut shell, friendly staff, horrible service.

I will go straight to the needs of this place.

    1. NEED MORE WAITRESSES/WAITERS
2 .NEEDS TO HAVE MORE BEERS ON ICE READY TO BE SERVED COLD
    3. VERY DIRTY RESTROOMS.

I was recently at this place last Friday for the first time watching the Laker/Clipper game and I was not impressed.  Besides the couple of times our waitress forgot to bring us our beers(to no fault of her own having to attend half of the establishment) our waitress was pretty friendly and good. However, as a businessman, why would you only have 2 waitresses working your WHOLE establishment???????
You would think an establishment selling Beer only would always have COLD ready to serve. THEY DID NOT. I lost count on the number or times our waitress told us the beers were not cold. IT WAS TRUE AS I SAW THE OWNER I BELIEVE all night continuing to bring our 12 packs of beers to what appears to be in a refrigerator.
    CLEAN YOUR RESTROOMS. FILTHY!!!!!!!

Besides all mentioned above, the place is OK.

First and foremost this a bar,  which they excel at.  Great beer selection, Tv's and it's clean.  I see many bad reviews here that suggest that this is some sort of  failed gourmet restaurant which it's not. It's a bar and I feel the food far exceeds the expectations of corner bar in downtown Downey.  I actually feel the food is much better than establishments serving food only.  This place is young and so are the young men that own it.  These guys are doing a great job and I'm sure it will just get better and better.   One suggestion though... waitresses,  would it kill you not to send a text on your phone for at least 5 minutes ?  Just a thought.

Honestly I wanted to like Bastards because Downey doesn't have a good place for BBQ.  I called & asked if they had Brisket - NO.  I asked if their tri tip was lean - NO but server did recommended pulled BBQ chicken sandwich. I ordered for pick up.
Please be advised the pulled chicken is not all white meat -  it's every part of the chicken, including flabby skin and knuckles that I had to spit out.  Spending $12 (including soda) for a gagging experience, is something I won't do again. Sorry but I won't be back.  Owners of Bastards, you have to up your game with food quality - or you won't be around much longer

    Like this bar a lot:
Tons of sports, great food, inexpensive drinks, and a hot waitress. What's not to love?
Recently started coming here with my friends Gerry and Frank. Immediately I felt welcomed into the bar, was given a tall beer on the house by Nick, the owner, and proceeded to watch as much football to my hearts content (ie: til I was plastered hahaha)

Great vibe here. And as i said, great food: cheeseburger was excellent, chicken nachos were among the best I've had, and the ceviche tasted fresh - the way ceviche she taste.

Will be returning here again real soon. (Prob Sunday haha)

Let me start by saying that the owner of an establishment usually reflects what the establishment has to offer.  The owner while belligerent called my wife a "B@#$" after which his own waitress tried to pull him away so he would not make more of a fool of himself than he already had. That being said is enough for me to never visit this place again and make sure every person i know also never visits this establishment(trust me that will hurt). I wish i could say at least the food was good but unfortunately it was very much the opposite. $32 wasted. in conclusion, go to this place if you want to be treated such as the name itself.

    And the curse continues!!

If you have read my reviews of the previous restaurant(Downtown BBQ) that occupied this space you will know exactly what I am talking about.

I have been there 4 times since the 1st week it opened, the most recent being about 2 weeks ago. This place isn't getting any extra points because a former Marine owns it and the military themes, while I respect that aspect, it doesn't grant this place a free pass.

I'll get this out of the way, every time I have been there the food has been bad, it's just not good. This goes from the appetizers to lunch items to kids meals. It is always bland tasteless food, even the fries are lame. Even the my little boy and niece think the food here is bad, and they are very generous with their praises!

Service has been anywhere from ok, to just plain non existent. I once went in there sat at the bar and waited over 10 minutes before walking out, with the bartender standing 2 feet right in front of me. Him and the owner talking the whole time, at one point some of the owners friends came in and sat right next to me and they were served immediately, while I was ignored.

Yeah I wont be going back, while they have a beer selection that is a bit better than most places, it's really not that special to warrant coming back, especially when you have better selections all around the area.

FIRST OF ALL THEY ALMOST KILLED MY GIRLFRIEND.!

It was our first time there a couple of days before their grand opening, we ordered our drinks a beer and her angry orchard cider along with some nachos.

As she's finishing her drink she catches between her lips what she thinks is ice, REALIZES THERE WOULDN'T BE ANY ICE in her cider takes it out with her fingers and its GLASS!!! We dump out her cup on the table and more tiny pieces of GLASS.

...AND then the Nachos...Only Bastards could ruin nachos. They didn't look like nachos and sure as hell didn't taste like it.

Fortunately my girlfriend survived and we got a free meal.

Not too long after my friends and I decided to give it another shot...FAILED, gross wings...

the only reason to step foot into bastards is for steelhead xpa the one good beer they have.

We went to try this place out in 8/2012.
I would love to give this place 5 stars ... because I love the story & as the wife of an OIF USMC Veteran, I support Veterans & our military personnel (past & present). So, when I walk into most other restaurants for the 1st time, I usually start them off @ 0 stars & they work their way up based on service, quality of food, atmosphere, etc. In this case, I started them off @ 5 stars (just based on who they are) & they worked their way down to 3 stars. They actually worked their way down to 0 stars, but then I decided to stop judging them as a restaurant & started judging them as a sports bar. If you're looking for a kinda cool bar, you should try it. If you're looking for bar & food, try a local cantina. If you're looking for food, RUN away from this place.
I had an inkling that this place would be more of a bar than a restaurant, so I sent a message through facebook & they reassured me that during the day they were a restaurant. We went at lunch time on a Saturday & I can assure you it was NO restaurant. It was a bar for sure! The food was lousy, overpriced & the service was worse! The owners greeted only their friends as they walked through the door. The waitresses were obviously hired based on looks & not on merit (as you would expect from a bar). It's unfortunate, but unless something changes drastically, this place will not be around much longer ... at least not as a restaurant, maybe as a local bar.

When I saw this place on the news awhile back, and I knew I had to drop by and check it out.  There was some controversy about the name of the place "Bastards" and the reporter asked questions about things like whether that kind of name is good for the community, etc.

When I came by to check out the place, I ended up meeting one of the two owners of this place and I asked him "What's the story of the restaurant's name--Bastards?"  And he told me that he served in the marines and that Bastards was the name of his infantry unit.  He said he opened this place as a way to give back to the community.  The owner was really cool, and after I talked to him, he went around checking to make sure all his customers were happy.

The waitresses were also very friendly, and always came around to check on us. The place is decorated with a military theme, and has a nice, chill and friendly vibe about it.  Some of the customers here had a military background, and come regularly to show their support.

I had the pull pork sandwich. The meat was tender n' juicy, and BBQ was sweet and very flavorful.  They also have a great beer selection here.  I had a nice cold draft Guinness. It was very smooth n' delicious.  Just what I needed that night.

Overall, I love what this place is all about and what it stands for.

Clever. Clever.  Clever.  Who will ever think of the name "Bastards" for a sports bar?  I knew the name speaks for itself.  There was a reason why this business was opened because we need to support our marines who served our nation.  I give them alot of credibility for opening a business like this .

Apart from the name, the service and location is far from ABSOLUTE.  I didn't have a hard time finding Bastards because it is located in the heart of downtown Downey and at the corner of 2nd street and Downey avenue.  Finding parking was a bit hard at first but I managed to squeeze into a parking space nearby.

I came by one day for a few drinks with my friends and I was quite daunted by how much support Bastards has.  It was a busy night and everyone seemed relaxed.  The crowd is very laid back and that's what I liked.  The waitresses was fairly friendly to my friends so ordering food wasn't a trouble at all.

I am looking forward with my next visit with Bastards.

Service sucked! The owner took our order and apparently it didn't get registered. 40 mins to get fed. He didn't have the nerve to apologize so he sent waiters to fix it while he sat at the bar w his buddies.  The staff was apologetic, but seriously the service had to be wrangled each time. Never again.  Food is average, not bad. Not worth it.

Came here today with my moms. We both ordered half rack ribs, the ribs weren't bad the sauce is pretty good. I also ordered a side of BBQ bake beans which were over done kinda with a burnt taste to them not a fan, cornbread was severelyburnt the cornbread at Boston-Market is way better. My mom had the sweet-potato fries and in my opinion the ones at other places are better. Her cornbread was also burnt.

We were here as soon as they opened so there's no excuse they were busy, so for a restaurant that just opened up, they need a little work.

The atmosphere was more of a sports-theme with TV's all over which was cool, so maybe some Happy Hour Beers (which are $1 less during happy hour) and some football would be allright.

    Don't think I'll be back....

Came here to celebrate both my dads and brothers birthday. BIG MISTAKE! When we

first walked in the waitress was friendly but then she had some friends come in and we

were ignored. She somehow managed to pour us an awful pitcher of beer!  We

couldn't complain because she was too busy talking to friends. By sheer luck a busboy

Passed our table and we told him about the beer he went to talk to the waitress about

it and she said it was because the kegs were just switched that it tasted funny. SHE DID

NOT EVEN OFFER TO SWITCH OUT OUR BEERS! Then the owner/manager walks buy and

says hope every things good guys, I reply no its not we have sour tasting beer he

WALKS AWAY FROM OUR TABLE  GOES OUTSIDE AND HAS A BEER WITH HIS BUDDY! At

this point we are leaving I go to use the restroom and there are people doing DRUGS in it!

Time to leave! We are walking out the manager says sorry about the beer I will get you

next time. NEXT TIME! Nothing on this planet would ever get me to go back to this place

not only did this put a damper on my dads and brothers birthday celebration and they

have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS they had PEOPLE DOING DRUGS IN THE

    BATHROOM!

First time around I was not a fan because food was a bit cold (still had a good taste) and service was slow.  But I gave it another shoot because you have to support  the owners ~ Marines.  They done so much for us and now are venturing into a business, one only has to support.

Second and Third ~ Service and Food have been so much better ... So I will be back and inform my friends and co workers about this joint.

    Happy Hour ~ 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. i believe: 1 buck off beer / Draft & Bottle ($4/5) good selection

    What I have tried ...
~ Pulled Pork Sandwich: Sweet first time and the second time it had a more bbq taste to it
~ Grilled Cheese bites: was not a fan of the bread
~  Cheeseburger:  MY FAVORITE ... so juicy and full of flavor

So my dad read about Bastards in the Downey Patriot (our local newspaper) and thought it would be a good idea to check this place out. Bastards is owned by two former Marines and named after the finest Marine Corps infantry unit. This place has Marine Corps flags and tributes all over their walls. My dad was quite pleased  being a retired Marine of 22 years! When we walked in we were greeted by one of the owners, he told us a little about the place and exchanged a few inside jokes with my dad!

The food was good, we each opted for bbq sandwiches tri-tip and chicken with fries as we watched the Kings game. The sandwiches had a lot of meat and were quite juicy. I would have preferred a little more bbq sauce but the for the price you are getting a good deal. They have about 10 beers on tap and others bottled. Happy Hour is Mon-Fri from 3-7 pm.

The crowd was pretty kick back, everyone chatting it up. People continued coming in and seemed to be quite pleased with the place. I would definitely come back. If you are military (active or retired) they offer 20% discount, but not sure how long that will last. So check em out.
