We popped into this place for lunch at 3pm. It was, like others have stated, quite dead. When we sat down, we were one of the only sets of customers in the building. it was a nice day, so there were a few outside on the deck. We had soda to drink and the chicken wrap with fries and the gyro with fries. The food was good; the service was decent.

Perplexing. So many good/great reviews, and so many weak ones. Even the bad reviews say SOME of the food was delicious. We've had great dinners here twice, and nearby tables said their food was v. good too. So whassup??

I'm guessing an inconsistent kitchen is the culprit. The menu is long, too long. Is this a Tapas place, or an upmarket seafood place, or a fries/burgers/sandwich place, or an apps and drinks place, pizza, or?? I dunno. But something's going on. Both times we've had our choice of tables (beautiful, waterfront) when other Newport places were full. So people are voting with their feet - a bad sign.

The semi-open kitchen is (intentionally) part of the ambiance. You can hear them - cowboying cooks, high energy/a little rowdy, probly a little uneven. Once we heard some confusion between waitress and cook over our order, and were surprised by a visit from the cook himself to our table. Fun though, if you just go with it.

So maybe we were lucky, though we were careful in ordering. But we had two great dinners here, friendly service, and a table with a million dollar view of the harbor. After a long day on the ocean, it was perfect. We had the cajun shrimp linguini (big portion, very good), fish & chips (one big slab, very fresh, breaded instead of battered, so good we had it both times) and fish in chili paste (more hot than flavorful, our only unsuccessful dish).

Prices are reasonable, almost low depending on what you order. I'd love to see this place succeed, strip down the menu and do a few things dependably, even remarkably well. Until then, ask for recommendations, order carefully, and enjoy the wonderful view. At least they can't screw THAT up!

Great infused liquors and they make great cocktails. Don't order the smoked salmon pate... it was once amazingly delicious now it is an epic disappointment. Overall good food.

Prior to going to the Oregon coast for vacation, my dad bought a coupon for Bay 839 from http://restaurant.com. Due to the mixed reviews, I wasn't overly excited for our dinner here. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We all ordered a cup of clam chowder to start and all agreed it was quite good. I got the 839 pizza which had a cream sauce and lots of seafood. It was awesome! My family also enjoyed their entrees, though I can't remember offhand what they ordered. We all agreed that while everyone's food was good, my pizza was the best. I highly recommend it.

Stopped by out of curiosity and fell in love. Tapas restaurant so expect small portions and plan accordingly. Amazing stuffed dates, salmon pate, and Bocadillo. Adequate clam chowder greatly enhanced by using excellent bread as a spoon. Will be back for dinner in a day or so!

I feel bad for giving such a low rating because the service was so great. Our large group tried to get into three other places for dinner that had great reviews on Yelp, but none of them panned out because of our large size and late planning. We stumbled upon Bay 839 out of chance and felt lucky to have them be so accommodating. Maybe we should have been a little suspect that they could get us in so quickly, when no one else could.

The service was accommodating and helpful, definitely 4 stars for that. There was something for everyone on the menu, due to its large offering of seafood and non-seafood items. The food was average for the most part. Nothing really stood out.

Had my husband not shared what had happened after I left to go back to the hotel early, I probably would have given them 3 stars. As it turns out, the rats are pretty brazen there. One actually came out into the dining room and hung out under the table of a bunch of ladies, unbeknownst to them. My husband notified a staff member and the reply he got was that they're everywhere and all the restaurants have them so close to the water. Say what?!?

Updating my review because the food here has gone downhill big time. Last two trips here yielded stomach aches and disappointment. Two stars is generous. Bland and undercooked fish, mediocre chowder (was not fresh), over cooked shrimp. Place was a bit dirty and we should have had a clue when we went in and the only customers were at the bar. I do like the infused alcohol they have but the food needs to have some attention paid to it. Service was horrible considering we were the only ones in there eating. Waitress didn't smile or indicate a personality until it was time to pay and she recieved what she earned.

Unexpectedly good! This bistro sits right on the bay with three separate rooms all sporting views of the water and its many delights. While we dined, we could see seals playing right outside our window. We sat in the bar area, and enjoyed the locals who visited and shared fishing stories with the bartender/server. I had the whole Dungeness Crab and I think it was the best I had ever tasted! It was large and meaty, served with melted garlic butter, and a slaw. I ate every bite of it, sucking out the juicy meat from the smaller parts of the legs. My husband had the Jambalaya which was mostly fresh seafood and a delightful array of flavors. He wasn't crazy about the octopus chunk on top, so that was left behind when he finished, but he said it was delicious, overall. It is not a place I would take children, especially in the bar dining room where we were. It is extremely casual, and the service is good but not over the top. But the fresh seafood is absolutely delicious, and we would highly recommend it.

I'm conflicted about this review. My dish - pan fried oysters with slaw and fries was pretty darn tasty (and hard to screw up). I like what I think was fennel slaw. My friend enjoyed his fish and chips. But I didn't like debating with the waitress whether the Brutal Bitter was an IPA or not (it's not).

No, the bigger issues were (1) bringing a 3 year old's chicken strips about 10 minutes after our meals came (how cruel to everyone involved) and (2) not listening to my friend when she requested no bacon on her salad, bringing her bacon, taking the dish back and simply scraping *most* of the bacon off.

    Not cool.

There is a serious disconnect with this place. I've driven by many times and read "BISTRO TAPAS SPIRITS" on the sign and expected a more upscale experience from this waterfront restaurant. What we got today was decidedly more down-market.

We walked through a dining room which smelled of ether to be seated in the bar, where we could enjoy happy hour. There were dozens of chips of paint missing from the walls, which were decorated entirely by the works of the same artist - a painter of bright acrylic scenes straight from someone's first year at college. Sorry to be so harsh, but I've been to college and don't want to revisit such shows over dinner. At first I thought it was cool that the open windows had no screens so that I could honestly experience the docks, that is until a fly flew in and flew into my face.

I made my way to the men's room eventually and found that it reaked of something very musty. Not cool.

The menu shows more promise than this restaurant does. The left half is tapas, and the right is entrees. We both ordered clam chowder. It was creamy and tasty in a way I couldn't quite figure out, kind of pink-colored, likely with a bit of heat. The clams were unfortunately tough as nails. I can see Gordon Ramsay screaming at the chef now, "Have these clams been frozen?!?" The smoked salmon pate on toasts was great, topped with capers, diced tomato and sliced red onions. The mushroom caps stuffed with shrimp and crab were delicious - but they were so tiny that I'd be embarrassed to serve them at a dinner party. We also tried dates stuffed with herbed goat cheese and wrapped with some good bacon. They were tasty, but covered in a layer of honey that served no purpose at all - it smothered rather than accentuated the natural sweetness of the pork and the dates.

The service was friendly, deliverd by a hot chick who pours stiff drinks.

In the end, I think there are many better places to grab some good food in Newport. Stomp around Yelp and find them.

We checked this place out after a stop over at the O.C. Aquarium - we had 4 adults a 13 year old and a 10 year old with us. What do you do when you're on the Oregon Coast? Eat Clam Chowder of course! We were in old town Newport in mid afternoon on a Saturday caught in a downpour and everything within dashing distance was closed but this place - so reluctantly we went in and were pleasantly surprised.

We had the clam chowder, shared a side of fries, a plate of red pepper hummus and the trio platter, all: were great!

The place was empty, so service was great, but yeah, the kitchen is within ear range and the cooks dropping the f-bomb in the background took away from the atmosphere a little, otherwise, this place is much better on the inside then on the outside.

Pricing is reasonable and the quality of the food is great, especially if I don't have to cook it!

This review is for weekday happy hour only! Happy hour prices for food and drinks seem reasonable. I was surprised and impressed at the choices of happy hour food, not the typical nachos et al, but actual small plates of the restaurant's better selections. Had the bacon wrapped portabellos which were great and some sort of tapas take on a grilled cheese, which was okay. One in our party ordered the cheese plate that included four different fromages and a good size loaf of sourdough. Ordered a melon ball, because how can you screw that up, right? First one was just right. Ordered a second one and it arrived cloudy, like made with cream. WTF? Sent it back and ordered a blackberry vodka thingy that was meh. It's a snazzy little restaurant that's like a warren of rabbit dens strung together, but hey, that's bayfront property in Newport. At least they're trying to do more than Costco chip and cheese and hot dogs for happy hour.

This is our favorite restaurant. We've driven 2.5 hours from Eugene just to eat dinner here. My boyfriend and I have never been disappointed with the food or service. They have Spanish tapas which we always get at least two of as a precursor to our entrees. The specials have been good as well as the infused drinks! We've had dessert there once, and it was no disappointment either.

I heard that this restaurant served cioppino, my favorite seafood dish. While there was plenty of fresh seafood in the bowl--clams, shrimp, oysters, and crab (for $26 there should be)--the broth was boring and the crab had been pre boiled in too-salty water, so salt dominated the taste. I was very disappointed. Cioppino is an Italian dish which requires some Italian seasoning, right? I've sampled many versions of this wonderful dish in and around Newport and along both coasts and this one is not up to par in my opinion..

Over rated. Nothing stood out. It wasn't gross so it gets 3 stars. And the server was nice.

We selected this restaurant based on Yelp reviews and we were not steered wrong. The food and service were both very good. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is because I do not think it is a great place for children, and we had our three kids with us. (More about that later).

We started with baguettes with a trio of toppings including a bruschetta, a tapenade and a basil/hazelnut pesto. It was very good, but not enough for two to share.

My husband had the fish and chips and liked them. He said the fish tasted very fresh, the batter was light and bit soggy. The accompanying fries were really good. It came with a very tasty dill sauce.

I had the whole dungeness crab with garlic butter. I ran out of the butter about halfway through, but it was delicious and filling. It was served with a generous piece of fresh baguette.

My ten year old son had the children's portion of Fish and Chips ($6) and didn't really care for it. He also ordered a chocolate milk which disappointed him because it did not have an adequate amount of chocolate syrup.

My 8 year old daughter and 6 year old son both ordered the "Noodles wih Cheese" (also $6) which we all interpreted to be their version of Macaroni and Cheese. It was an adult-sized portion of fettucini style pasta with a cheese sauce, delicious to the adult palette, but a garnish of dried parsley COMPLETELY ruined the dish for my daughter. Despite claiming to be "starving" she was unwilling to eat the meal. Although I realize my over-tired daughter's reaction was extreme, I must wonder why anyone would sprinkle parlsey on a child's meal. Kids tend to be really picky. (It would have been nice if the server had offered to return it to the kitchen for an unadorned exchange. We didn't ask...but had I been a server with a child in tears, you can bet I'd have made the swap--especially when the meal was one of such inexpensive items)

My 6 year old boy is less fussy and was willing to eat it, but I could tell he was not crazy about it. My husband really liked it though--and so we boxed up the leftovers to take back to the hotel. (One plate would have been more than enough for both children)

My husband had a bottle of Dead Guy, and I had a Blue Moon on tap. The kids all had chocolate milk--though they ran out of milk and could not supply refills. (They were served in very small glasses). Our server was very apologetic about this - certainly not her fault...but just another thing that made me feel it was really not the best venue for kids.

We sat in the middle room that was set up as a lounge as there were a couple of guitar players singing there. We had the only table in the room, by the window and had a great view of the bay. We could see seals, ducks and fishing boats from our window.

Personally I would go back again--but not with my kids.

Our bill came to approximately $67 dollars before tip...which I thought was very reasonable.

All I can imagine is that the positive reviews must be from people that have been here only once and really lucked out. We've been here about a half-dozen times. We had a great experience the first time, and keep hoping that our bad experiences were aberrations. They keep proving themselves over and over again, though.

They do fine with simple things like cheese trays - those are always great. So is their hummus and olive plate. But watch out if there's anything that requires real preparation. The salads will have enough dressing to float the lettuce. The rice in jambalaya is actually crunchy. Stick with the things that can't be done wrong.

One consistent factor has been the service. It has been uniformly atrocious. The place can be nearly empty with 2-3 employees working, and it'll still take more than 1/2 hour for an initial hello - and then they seem to think you're taken care of for the night! We've seen 2-3 tables of other people come in and be waited on after we sit down - all the while with no service ourselves.

Their only redeeming qualities are the view of the bay and their small plates of cheese or hummus. If you really want service or food of higher quality, though, there's Shark's right across the street, and Local Ocean Seafood down the road.

Hmmmm, not so good. Yelp reviews usually pretty spot on. Not for this place. Salad good - but enough dressing for about 20 salads. Fries - greasy. Crab cake - funky. Flatbread pizza - more like a tortilla. Only redeeming thing - $3 for 20 oz. PBR. People were friendly - but food is not good. Go to Local Ocean Seafood.

Went for dessert, which was pretty darn good, creative and all made in-house. The service was friendly. The only problem was the coffee was not good. Unfortunately we only ordered dessert and coffee... If they can improve the coffee the pricing would be justified. 4-stars because I have a feeling the coffee will improve & the dessert was awesome!

This is great place. At first it looks a little cheesy, with multiple rooms inter connected. They all have a nice view of Newport Bay. We have eaten all three meals (B L D) here. The French toast is decadent. The halibut and chips were great, with one nice big piece of fish nicely breaded, rather than strips of fish.

We had a nice duck dish for dinner, my son had steak. Both were great. Prices are reasonable, with good service. We eat here often. Highly recommended!

This little gem was nothing short of amazing. We had wanted to try sushi at Yuzen in Seal Rock since we'd heard great things but it was closed for a couple of weeks, so we hit the Newport Bayfront to scout out a new spot to try.

This waterfront bistro was calling out to us and we wandered in to find a casual, welcoming vibe, awesome live music and excellent food. We had a pair of Rogue Brutal Bitters, a crabcake, tasty caesar salad with crunchy/soft/warm croutons, a pulled pork slider, and a prosciutto/brie stuffed chicken with a hazelnut/sage buerre blanc served with perfectly wilted spinach and a deftly seasoned rice pilaf. I think I must have said "Yum" or "Mmmm" with every bite. And I haven't even gotten to the dessert! Creme Brulee with a crackable shell and drizzled chocolate and caramel with some sort of hazelnut crumb mixture on the side. Gorgeous to look at and the perfect blend of texture and flavor. I wanted to lick the plate. Pure bliss.

Oh and it was only $47 for all of this - happy hour after 9 on Saturday. What a steal. They stay open till 12. And did I mention the view? We were watching boats coming into the harbor by the light of the docks. Stunning.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the place has several little rooms, one a pure restaurant area, one a live music/lounging area, and one a bar area. Something for everyone. Our disappointment in not getting to have sushi at Yuzen turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I highly recommend Bay 839. I won't ever go through Newport again without hitting this place.

We decided to try this place from Greg's recommendation and he was correct. The food is very good and reasonably priced. We went in the evening, sat in the "living room" area (a bunch of couches near a fire) and looked out onto the bay. The staff was very friendly as well. Definitely a great find.

Having discovered Shirleys closed last year I patiently waited for the grand opening of whatever would emerge. To my delight it was Bay 839. With a spectacular view overlooking Yaquina Bay and the future home of the NOAA Pacific Fleet you have three areas to be seated, my favorite being what I refer to as the living room. Fireplace, couches - a great place to gather before moving to your table and also where they have weekend music.

I can't say enough about the food. I've never had a bad meal there and frequent Bay 839 weekly. The staff is fantastic too.
