We went during the day when all the locals were there. At first it seemed uncomfortable. I've realized that the locals are the only ones not nice in this town and the look on their faces when we walked in wasn't welcoming at all. But after a few minutes we started talking to the people around us at the bar and they were extremely friendly. I guess they had to realize we weren't annoying pains in the butt first. Although the bartender was extremely nice and seemed like a cool dude. During the day they have dollar drafts. The bartender, Richard warned us that they weren't the coldest but they were only a buck. We thought they were plenty cold for being a freakin' dollar. Our bar tab was under 10 bucks and we had an awesome experience. We were told it's all younger people at night and it's extremely packed, but that's not really our crowd so we weren't interested in going back at night. The bathroom situation seems to be the same everywhere. One tiny bathroom for the entire place, which sucks. I almost peed my pants waiting for an old lady to get outta there. I'd go back for sure though!
Review Source:Wow what an awesomely bad place to go for a drink. My second Port A bar was a total disaster.
Even before the place filled up it was hard for myself and my friends to get a drink after it started filling up it was impossible. Black lights, smoke and bartenders ingnoring you is not a good combination and totally pushed this patient person to the limit.
We high-tailed it outta there to somewhere that would serve us and did not have so many blacklights and cheesy '90s music. Blech!
Some girlfriends and I went looking for a good time on Wednesday night, it was really slow and the bartender looked as if she hated her job. Â There was a group of really drunk guys and the doorman made sure that they got off safely. On our way out he even stopped us asking who would drive. We all thought it was very conciderate, and sweet that he genuinely wanted us to get home safely! I can definitely see how this place would rock on the weekends. :)
Very smokey!!!
I went here while I was in Port A for sandfest this year and had a great time. Â I played free poker Friday and Saturday night which was fun and after at least 5 drinks of my own, and 2 rounds of drinks for the whole table worth of buying myself back into the poker game, I didn't even spend $50.. .which was a nice break for my wallet while I was on vacation. Â
Yes this place is smokey, yes its filled with locals. This place is a laid back beach bar that is just a little different than the other places. Â If you are a city person expecting a club thats like the ones where you're from, you're not going to get it. Its a great place if you go and enjoy it for what it is. Â
People you might find here:
-local 50+ looking for a good game of poker
-people there to dance
- ladies who have spent the majority of their life in the sun who will prob still wear their bikini thorugh their 60s
- Young Locals
- Touristy people not from there lookin for a good time :)
I'm sure the winter ambiance at Bernie's is a bit different from the summer. Â We were there on a Sunday night when a local country band plays for a few hours. Â The crowd consisted of winter Texans, most of whom seemed to leave by 8pm (presumably to go to bed) and a few locals. Â The crowd clearly came for the dancing since the dance-floor was pretty full and the tables seemed almost empty. Â The crowd was friendly and the music played non-stop. Â It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours with friends.
Review Source:I cannot believe the crazy reviews I just read!!!!
First of all, let me say.....Bernies is, BY FAR, the best hang out on the island!!!!
Definitely the place to be when the sun goes down! It is a very fun place to be! Casper, their DJ, ALWAYS has people on the dance floor...he knows how to get the crowd goin and keep em goin till closing time!!! Their drinks are extremely reasonable....especially for a "touristy" place such as Port A! I have never had a problem with ANYONE on their staff! All are nothing but friendly!
To the guy who seemed surprised by all the guys wearing shorts, flip flops and fishing shirts....WOW!! You must be quite the city goer......I would ask you what you wear when you go to the beach and/or fishing, but you seem you may be afraid to even touch the bait!
if there were ZERO stars available I would select that option. Â However, I will give it ONE star because it has a photo booth and the ladies really liked playing in it.
This was a stop on this past weekends girl trip. Â I had not been there before and i will NOT go back. Â
Granted I was still hung over from the night before at Sharkey's, BUT STILL!
This place is sooooo full of smoke i spent a lot of time out on their deck to get some fresh air. Â The music was so loud that the speakers were kinda scratchy on some songs.
Someone had puked in of the girls bathrooms so that one was off limits and to get to the other one we had to cross the entire bar and dance floor which was just scary.
The usual Bachelorette party was going on which is common for Port A. Â Woop Woop ... It's always great to see these groups of girls around town. Â they really liven up the place. Â Even they were too grossed out and didn't stay very long.
There were other groups there with matching glow bracelets on who must have thought it was October and not June because they looked like really scary creatures from planet GROSS. Â
One of the bartenders was so very rude to a customer he should have been fired on the spot.. Â No tip for you buddy!
This place looks bad, smells bad and is a cross between trashy and douchey. Â BLECK.
BUT .. the place was PACKED so folks must really like it (or Sharkey's was too crowded).
This is a shake your booty get me some booty dance club with a young crowd. Great for singles, I guess. This place is pretty big compare to the other bars on the island and they do have a full bar. I was actually surprised to find this kinda place in Port Aransas. It's a kind of bar you would see in a big beach city  not a small fishing island.
Review Source:I didn't expect much from "Bernie's" coming in, so I wasn't disappointed. Â Apparently it's the "end up" place for everyone. Â It's a place that caters the 21-year olds to the leathery skinned Port-Aranansas-ites. Â
The DJ did takes requests, the drinks were cheap, and they actually do not cut ANYONE off.....even if they can't walk....
BOTTOM LINE:
It's not a place I would recommend to someone visiting, but it's something you should check out to say you did... Â Bernie's is to Port A, what Dirty East 6th St. is to Austin.
Bernie's is apparently the best bar/club on the island, which sounds great until you get here. Make sure to load the flux capacitor up in the Delorean, because you will be going back in time when you walk in the door here. Loads of glow in the dark paint and black lights, a stuffed Bernie in the corner and a crazy local guy in tight pants doing hula hoop on a raised portion of the dance floor. WTF!?!?
The crowd is pretty much guys in ball caps, flip flops, shorts and those crazy ass fishing shirts with mesh panels in the back. The girls, or should I say ladies, are definitely of the cougar variety. If you're mid 20s and have any idea how to dress, and if you're interested in a possible future with an island lady, this might just be your calling. Â
Strong drinks and popular dancey tunes kept people moving on the floor. If you are in Port A and want to go out at night, this is the place to be. Yes, it's bad, but we still had a good time here.
Remember Tone-Loc's song "Wild Thang?"  Remember Def Leppard's  "Pour Some Sugar On Me?"  Remember Garth Brook's "Friends in Low Places?"  Remember those neon colored fashions from the 1980's?  Who needs the "Hot Tub Time Machine" movie?  I swear that I stepped in to a really bad version of the Spring Breaks I remember from my old college days.  Hell, they even have a stuffed doll dressed like Bernie from "Weekend at Bernie's!"  Well, before I get all nostalgic 'n stuff, let me just say that I really love those old Spring Break memories, but being at Bernie's was the polar opposite.  But you can't really blame Bernie's Club from trying.  Since they're pretty much the only dance club in Port Aransas, the place does get full.  The problem mainly lies in the clientele that frequent the place.  There were more tools here than at Home Depot!  The ratio here was about 15 to 1 and it was heavily stacked against my favor.  It's a good thing I was there with my SO and best friends.  We took advantage of their VERY low drink prices, maybe took advantage of it too much (haha).  It seemed to make the experience a little more tolerable.  (cue drum intro to "Wild Thing")
If you're going to come to Bernie's, expect really bad music played way too loud, expect to  see lots of dudes hitting on the handful of girls here and most of all...expect a nasty hangover the following day.
Welcome to Douchehag central! Â Yup I said DoucheHAG, i.e. them skanks that like to dress up like hoes but then sit aroung judging other women for dressing the same way. Â Friends of mine got in a ho-down throw down this weekend here cause a girl was dancing with 3 of her guy friends and a table of hags called her a "whore".
Unfortunately Bernies is the only dance bar in Port A. Â Sharkeys jumped the shark apparently. Â And during Sandfest, this place was packed! Â It was a complete freak and ho fest on the dancefloor, where everyone was dancing with everyone. Â That part I liked! Â Don't judge me. Â So if that sort of behavior disturbs you, stick to bonfires and "Kumbaya" on the beach. Â But the DJ here is LAME! Â It seems the Douchehag anthem is that song by Buckcherry "You're crazy b*%$# but you F*%$ so good I'm on top of it......blah" cause they played it 5 times in 2 hours. Â Mix in the token Country Western b.s. and I had a lot of down time from the dancefloor. Â
I guess overall it's just like most restaurants/bars/clubs we went to here. Â Mediocre at best. Â But no one can fuss cause it's the beach.
