This place is terrible for breakfast. The omelettes are awful. The only flavor the mushroom omelette had was from a hair the cooking staff left in it. The Spanish omelette is just a bunch of salsa wrapped in an egg. The wait staff is indifferent to guests. The coffee is horrid. Don't come for breakfast. There are plenty of better diners in the area.
Review Source:Drove two hours today to get here to surprise my Mom and sister at lunch. Â I haven't been here in twenty years, and I don't think the decor has changed a bit. (The bathroom is especially dated, and though it smelled clean, the corners in the BR were gunky and there was a lovely wad of gum in the floor in the stall.)
We were quickly seated in the back banquet room because they couldn't manage to accommodate 4 adults and child in the front room. Â This might not have been a bad thing but for the fact that there was a party of 20+ people in the room. Â The rest of the room was absolutely empty. Â So where do they seat us? Â Right next to this very loud group. It was hard to hear anyone in my party. Â The entire time we were there, there were many empty tables, so there was no real reason they needed to put us right next to this crowd.
It was noon, but my daughter wanted an omelet and home fries, so I asked if breakfast was still being served. Â The waitress said yes, but no home fries, waffles, or poached eggs were available, so DD nixed that idea. Â The waitress seemed seriously stressed and said she needed five minutes to get out order, so we told her take her time. Â When she did come back, she was snappy about the order she wanted to take our orders in. Â When she brought the drinks, she brought them to the wrong people. Â She was finished actively waiting on the large group, so I'm not sure why she seemed so stressed out.
I ordered spanikopita. Â Everyone else ordered sandwiches/wraps. Â I mentioned that the lemon soup was supposed to have been good, so my mom ordered it. Â The soup was...not fabulous. Â It had potential, but my mom didn't like it at all, so she gave it to me. Â I tried it, and it definitely didn't taste like real lemon. Â It tasted like cheap citric acid powder with a bad aftertaste, like in cheap candy or lemon drink mix that has been sitting around too long. Â If it weren't for that bad aftertaste, it would have been good. Â I suspect that real lemons aren't too closely related to this soup.
The servings of our lunches were huge. Â My spanikopita was about $7, and it was three times as big as a similarly priced piece would be where I live. Â My daughter's grilled cheese was huge and she said the bread seemed homemade. Â
Unfortunately, big doesn't mean good. Â My spanikopita was really greasy and not anywhere near as good as any piece I've ever had. Â I ate a small amount and was done. Â
We asked if the waitress could tell us what desserts they had. Â We had seen them on the way it, but there was no dessert menu and there were no signs next to the desserts, so if I asked for the cake with chocolate frosting, it could have been one of four cakes. Â The waitress said, "well, I could, but it would be WAY easier if you went and looked at them" in, quite frankly, a very rude way and walked off. How would that help since we didn't know what anything was called?
When I did get up to help my daughter with the selection, the waitress passed me with the box she was bringing for my daughter's leftovers. Â She said, "don't you want a box?" Â I told her no, I didn't. Â "Well, are you done?" Â "Yes." Â She then went to the table and grilled my sisters about why I wasn't taking my (greasy) spanikopita home. Â Lay off, lady!
My mom got a piece of chocolate cake with "fluffy cream" filling. Â It wasn't good at all- I'm pretty sure there wasn't any real food in it. Â My daughter's cheesecake was somewhat better, but even my little sweet tooth said it was too sweet.
It was very inexpensive ($50 for 5 of us with two desserts) but I won't be eating here again for at least another twenty years because the service was absolutely awful (and yes, I get it, I was a waitress) and the food sub-par.
You're basically in the middle of nowhere, so you have a choice between here and the Subway, so pickings are slim.
It's a Greek diner which makes you think why would someone put a diner here behind a truck stop, in front of the best hotel in town, the Quality Inn.
The food is decent, and the waitstaff was nice even for coming in during near closing hours. Â The diner fare is great; I'd avoid the desserts, most of them look like they were purchased some time ago. Â I bought a cheesecake which tasted like something from Sam's Club or the ilk.
Good food, good service. Menu is a smaller than most diners. Breakfast was pretty much ala carte. Everything was separately priced. French toast with bacon and a soda came to $10. Bacon was perfectly crispy, but the french toast (supposed to be their specialty) was merely average. No weekday breakfast specials.
Review Source:One of the things I love about yelp is that it can trigger memories about places you went to at some point in your life ( Like i mentioned in my review of the Texas Hot) The Blue Dolphin Diner was a place that my family and I stopped off at toward my grandparents.
The diner itself was decent. The service was friendly but nothing jumps out.
The Mac and Cheese is one of the best I have ever had. It was a good portion.
Its a nice place to eat. My family to be honest liked the place more than I did. It's a good diner but not great
This diner had quite delicious food. I had French Onion soup, a Greek salad, and a gyro. The French Onion soup didn't have the traditional type of melted cheese on top, but rather melted shredded cheese. It still tasted good. The Greek salad was very good, with a good amount of feta cheese, red onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, tasty dressing, and 2 pepperoncini peppers (my favorite part of a Greek salad!). The gyro was really good. The beef was tasty and the other stuffings in the pita accompanied it perfectly. I enjoyed my coleslaw and pickle as well. I had a bite of my boyfriend's bacon cheeseburger and it was among the best diner cheeseburgers I've ever had. We were lamenting the fact that there are no diners of this caliber down in Dutchess County where we live. Overall, a great diner that I wish was closer to me!
Review Source:If you like classic diners, this place is for you. I have only had breakfasts there, but have never been disappointed. The service is good, the food is inexpensive and very very good. Everything is clean and well maintained. You may have a short wait on weekend mornings, but definitely worth it!
Review Source:My husband and I have gone to the Blue Dolphin a number of times in the past few years. We are both from Vestal and attended church in Owego. So after church a group of us would go to the Blue Dolphin for dinner. Everybody would tell us how good it was. So we started going also. Well every time we went there we had a bad meal. The last few times every body else did also. Our pastor found a bug in her salad three different times until she refused to go there anymore.
My complaint is that the serving sizes, especially on the salads were very small. My husband is a big eater, so I suggested he order a Chef's salad as they are usually a good size for a whole meal. His was so small that we had to stop at Burger King on the way home! No kidding! I felt so sorry for him. He swore we would never go back.
Yesterday we had to attend a birthday party there for his father's 90th birthday. The food was horrible. No taste. Too small of portions. We both left there starving. He had ordered the London Broil thinking it would be a good sized portion. Wrong! Four VERY thin strips of meat that was cooked crisp even though he ordered it medium.
We would have both ordered breakfast but they did not serve it all day as most diners do. Do not waste your money at the Blue Dolphin. It looks good but looks can be deceiving.
Definately a fan of this classic Greek diner. The service is pretty good and the food is quality. Sit at a booth or at the very long counter. Plenty on the menu for even the pickiest of diners; burgers to Greek specialties.
They serve in-house baked warm bread that is yeasty and light and comforting. You have to request it but it is complimentary.
The chicken slouvaki is some of the best. Tender and made with fresh herbs. The sandwich made on Greek pita is about $6 and you can get it so it comes with a huge Greek salad and a cup of soup for less than $9.
The soups are made in-house and are full of flavor. I had the Greek-lemon and wasn't a fan but the lentil was out of this world!
The dessert case is over the top. There's a cake that is a full cheesecake with a full chocolate torte cake layered on top. It's like two desserts for $5. Sinful. Not a fan of their pie. Served stone cold and the filling is very corn-syrup based.
This diner is way underpriced. I'm used to Saratoga Springs pricing. Not much on the menu over $11 and you get enough food for three meals. Most entrees come with soup and a salad.
It's clean and friendly. They will separate your checks if need be and they take credit cards. Highly reccomended.
Super convenient location. Easy on/off the highway.
I have some friends who grew up in Apalachin, NY and when I told them Apalachin is "Home of the Blue Dolphin," they were pretty amazed I knew that tidbit of info. Well, I dined here in the 1990s with a large group of Scouts on our way back from Ohio. I really enjoyed the food here and the friendly staff did a great job in serving the needs our large group.
Conveniently located off Route 17 (Future I-86) at Exit 66, the Blue Dolphin Restaurant has been one of my standby choices for a good meal when I pass through the Southern Tier. There's a large blue dolphin statue on the roof that's hard to miss!
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the place is very casual and offers a good selection of typical American and Greek diner fare and homemade baked goods. The prices are reasonable. I stop here in particular for the Greek food and usually get the Chicken Souvlaki or Mousaka with rice and salad, very tasty and filling. So many other choices to try next time!
