I recently made my first trip to the Outer Banks. Â My boyfriend and I slipped away from the group to celebrate our six-month anniversary, and chose this restaurant as our destination. Â What a great choice--we loved our meal here!
To drink, we each got a glass of wine from their By the Glass menu. Â I got the Malbec, and it was really great. Â I believe my boyfriend got the Pinot Grigio (I cringed when he pronounced the wine, so this seems like a likely candidate). Â
We started by sharing the Carolina Pickled Shrimp, a twist on shrimp and grits. Â Incredible--so creamy and delicious! Â The tomato jam on top was killer.
For our entrees, I was really torn between ordering the crab cakes and beef tenderloin--I mean, I'm on the seaside. Â I should be eating seafood. Â But I couldn't do it!! Â In the end, I got the beef tenderloin, and it was the best cut of meat I've ever had. Â If you're similarly torn, go for the beef. Â Incredible.
My boyfriend got the yellowfin tuna special, which came with fried rice on the side. Â Similarly spectacular!
We finished by splitting the Valhrona Chocolate Torte, but I requested that they substitute the white chocolate ice cream with espresso ice cream. Â Solid decision. Â
So yeah, basically every course knocked it out of the ballpark. Â And just a general note to finish up: if you're ordering something cooked to order, go rare or medium rare (or, as I recently discovered, "rare plus," which is between rare and medium rare). Â I recently read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, in which he reveals that chefs save the worst cuts of meat for people who ordered meat/fish well-done.
Arrived without a reservation at 6pm on 07/13/13 and we were greeted by a friendly hostess who had someone seat us in a lovely corner table overlooking the water. That was the best part of the dining experience.
The woman who seated us asked if we'd like "tap water" which seemed like a weird thing to say since typically they just give you water at dinner. We waited for her to return so we could place our drink order. And we waited...and waited...and waited. In the mean time a table that was seated in close proximity after our arrival was brought water, placed their drink orders, brought their bar drinks and had the specials recited to them. Still we waited. I tried to flag down the woman who sat us...turns out she was just the (tap) water girl. Nothing. I tried to flag down the waiter who was efficiently serving our table neighbors...Nothing. I noticed a well dressed woman staring at us off and on during these attempts (? manager). Eventually she approached and apologized for our wait. Apparently no one informed the other waiter we were sitting there...which seemed odd since we're average sized adults without invisible powers. She never identified herself, just said it was her fault we waited.
When the waiter finally came to take our drink order, he apologized that we had waited "a minute" for him...even though it was at least 10 minutes. In the mean time I had been given the catering menu instead of the dinner menu which made for a bit of confusion on what wines were available by the glass and what dishes were actually available for dinner. So he had to clear that up and I had to quickly review my boyfriend's correct menu before the waiter ditched us for another 10 minutes.
In my opinion the wine list was limited, but we both enjoyed our choices. I had the Zin and my boyfriend chose the Malbec.
The waiter brought our bread. Two bite sized pieces of cornbread topped with some cherry cream cheese swirl. They were so small I laughed when he set them down. They were also kind of gross. He didn't clarify whether this was a comp for the fact that we were ignored or if this was our table bread. Shortly after when I noticed other tables with bread baskets I had to remind him to bring us some. It consisted of 3 slices of stale baguette and 2 pieces of burnt cornbread. Not good.
Soooo dinner... My boyfriend got the scallops which he said were okay, but not especially impressive. I ordered the tuna steak special, medium well. What I was served was the most over cooked tuna steak I have ever eaten. Nowhere near enough diced tomatoes on top to comfortably swallow each bite without chasing it with a sip of water. It was so dry I could barely eat it. had our waiter checked on us I would've mentioned it. We both felt our dinners were't piping hot, indicating they sat around a bot before we were served. The quality of this food was mediocre at best. The waiter never once asked us if we were enjoying the food. At one point mid-meal he came over with a coffee set up and said "ok, who's my coffee drinker?"...but we hadn't asked for coffee mid-meal. When we told him that he just turned and walked away without a word and in a bit of a huff.
Now, I'm all about treating ourselves to a nice dinner every once in a while. But the $100 we spent on 2 dinners and 2 glasses of wine at this place was a complete waste. Service was terrible, food was disappointing. The only good thing was the view...until the tap water girl pointed out all the nutria (rodents) swimming in the sound right outside our window.
In all this place was extremely disorganized and the staff was beyond unprofessional. If I'm to pay $50 per person I expect a good dinner with good service. Would NOT recommend this place and will never return.
This is a terrific place for a more upscale lunch or dinner in the northern OBX (and also worth a trek from Kitty Hawk, etc.). It gets crowded, expecially when it rains. Wait time, if no reservations, isn't too long. They have a big bar, with really good cocktails and wine list, to wait at. It's worth a longer wait for a booth by the window overlooking the sound. The hostess is always very accomodating. Or, just eat at the bar. Great bartender!
The food is so good. The she crab soup is very good. The appetizer spreads (ham, egg salad, pimento cheese) is great to share and quite tasty. If you are a fan of crab cakes, this restaurant's are a must try. Full of crab with no fillers, perfectly cooked and good sauces. The grilled mahi mahi with avacado, green sauce and quinoa was devine. Other diners loved the fried catfish with jambalaya (one asked for it blackened, not a problem).
Service was very good. I had heard such great things about the crab cakes, but really wanted the fish. Our waiter brought one cake out, with all the different remoloude sauces they had that day, for us to sample. I didn't want to share! Our server did dissappear when time for the check, but we weren't in a hurry.
Like I said, great cocktails (hey, it's raining at the beach). Gold marg. and the special gimlet shined.
We've been twice for lunch on two different vacations, but this is a great place for date night. They do have a kid's menu, but I wouldn't want to bring a little one here for dinner (that's just me). The prices are in line with the portions and quality of food, but it's not cheap. Don't mistake it for a seafood shack, it's a nice place and quite a good one at that.
My family and I made the mistake of not heeding the warnings in the negative reviews and went to Blue Point for lunch on 6/11/13. Though the negative reviews are sparse, their critiques are spot on! We are always willing to give a supposedly non-kid friendly restaurant a try. This is often an unfair judgment made by others. Further, our 4-year-old and 20-month-old have been to some VERY high end restaurants (which this is not) with rousing success, where they have thoroughly enjoyed their meals, charmed other patrons, and generally had a great time. Our experience started with the hostess haughtily telling me that "We don't have high chairs, and we only have booster seats with no buckles." Check that from other reviews, snobby attitude from the start. It took quite a while to get any attention from our server, but when she came she provided advice on the appetizers, and it seemed like things would work out. It all went downhill when I asked her about gluten-free options for the toddler (we'd seen online that they were willing to accommodate). She abruptly told me to order him a burger with no bun, and she walked away. Service continued to be slow and portions of requests were left unfilled. My son never received his water we asked for. My husband attempted to get more information about gluten free options to no avail. Our server was dismissive and snotty. She obviously didn't care. When I asked the hostess for someone to help us get more information, she simply sent our same server back to us. She proceeded to refuse to answer basic menu questions about ingredients and told us that she couldn't be expected to explain the menu because she was busy and had tables, with whom I noticed her spending plenty of time. She also said that if we needed to know about what was on the menu, we'd need to talk to a chef. To make a long story short, she never answered any questions and offered only bare pork shoulder and "plain" green beans as an option (for which we paid the full BBQ meal price). The entire plate was doused in grease (even the "plain" green beans). Our burger (which was recommended by another customer as amazing) was just OK. Nothing special. Check that from other reviews-uninspired and overpriced food. When I spoke to the manager, she was defensive, told me that was one of her best servers, and said that they talk each shift in detail about menu items in reference to allergies. When I told her our server was unwilling or unable to answer questions she too was snotty. She even had the nerve to tell me she hoped I'd come back. NEVER. Reviewers with criticisms (also on other review sites) are spot on. Snobby, bad service; needlessly unfriendly to kids; and boring, mediocre food you could get somewhere else for a lot less.
Review Source:Enjoyed a wonderful relaxed supper while watching waves of thunderstorms roll in over Curritick Sound. Salad was perfectly ripe sliced peaches on a bed of arugula with pistachios and goat cheese. So  delicious, but definitely large enough to share unless its your primary dish for the meal. But had to leave room for  the crab cakes, which were perfect...fully lump crab with cornmeal covering. Crisp and creamy. Service was attentive.
Review Source:Summary: This restaurant is amazing. Well worth the hour wait (we didn't have reservations and it was a friday evening). Parking can be a bit tight but just be patient. Beautiful area to walk around as you're waiting for seating - lots of cute shops and nature on the bay. Prices were reasonable considering the high quality of the dishes and the service.
It's rare that we get to enjoy a perfectly executed meal - from the service to the quality of the dishes that were served. However, I would take a half star off due to the slightly snobby attitude of the hostess and seating service at the front area. They take themselves a little too seriously..
Dinner and drinks were great - we started with the walnut and apple salad. It was dressed evenly and had the right amount of toppings to greens. He had the locally caught special (I forget what kind of fish) and I had the scallops. Perfectly cooked and delicious combination of flavors and textures. The meals were well portioned and light enough that we decided to split some dessert - pecan pie with coffee ice cream (instead of the bourbon ice cream as suggested by the waiter) and the lime-coconut sorbet. The pecan pie was large (more than enough for two) with a healthy serving of ice cream. We accidentally received the bourbon ice cream which was very heavy and strong. The coffee ice cream was a much better companion as it didn't overpower the already heavy pecan pie with strong flavors. The sorbet was bright and creamy.
Our waiter was wonderful, especially with all of his suggestions on the specials and desserts. We enjoyed chatting with him about the area as well - he really added to the overall wonderful experience at Blue Point. We are both looking forward to our next visit here.
A great casual place for some excellent food from the area! Â Their specialties seem to be mostly fish, as expected in this seaside area. I had a wonderful grilled Ahi served on a bed of arugula with pine nuts and cherry tomatoes, topped with a tasty balsamic vinaigrette. Soooo scrumptious and one of their specials! Â The fish was grilled to perfection! Â My friend had some She Crab Bisque that was soooo creamy and flavorful. Â Yummy!
They offer a wonderful and expansive wine selection and basically any cocktail you could want. Our cute but young server was helpful and if he couldn't answer questions, ran off and found the answers immediately. Very attentive!
I'll certainly be back during the next visit to try some of the other offerings on the menu!
This is a great place to watch the sunset. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday night, so there was a wait for a table. The hostess told us that if we wanted, we could could wait at the outdoor bar. We had no idea that there would be a nice area outside to sit and watch the sunset. The drinks were good, the seating was perfect, and the sunset was beautiful. This was the first time I really enjoyed waiting for a table. The experience only got better once we were seated. The waiter was kind and the food was amazing. Another great find in the OBX.
Review Source:Best restaurant we visited while in OBX! The restaurant is located at the end of the boardwalk, parking is ample. There is some outdoor seating. The maitre d station was a bit of a cluster, with a rather inexperienced person running the front. We had reservations early in the evening but waited for some time to be seated. We didn't need a high chair, but a couple in front of us without reservations was seated and had to leave because the Bumbo they had didn't suffice for their small child.
Once seated, we had a water view and a view of the kitchen, which was great. To start, we ordered the hoisin baby back ribs, which were served with kimchi. The ribs were unique and terrific. My husband commented he could've ordered those as an entree, he loved them!
Our waitress, Felicia was outstanding. She knew all of the specials without reading and explained the preparation of each. She took our order sans writing and was prompt and attentive throughout our meal.
I ordered the beef tenderloin well done (as I'm pregnant and must have red meats cooked thoroughly-this is not how I'd ordered meat ordinarily, so I was leery the meat would be burnt and dry). My husband ordered the catfish. Both meals were outstanding. The beef was delicious, juicy and seasoned well with what looked like fleur de sel on top. The fingerling potatoes and creme fraiche were a great compliment to the beef. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his catfish, the cornmeal crust was seasoned well and not soggy.
For dessert we split a warm brownie with vanilla bean ice cream (it actually comes with coffee ice cream). Â It is all made in house, homemade and is delicious.
Hands down best meal and service we had all week in OBX!
We were in Duck and we stopped for lunch. Â We had eaten here before and couldn't recall if we enjoyed it. Â We determined that we did enjoy it.
I've read several people who were seated with great views. Â We were seated in a small alcove between the bar and the front door. Â It was fine but there was no real view.
After a bit, our server came and he was well versed on the menu and the specials. Â The menu is actually quite limited and we both ordered specials. Â My wife had the Corvina special which she loved. Â It was grilled and served over a quinoa and cherry tomato type salad. Â The salad was cold and the fish was served hot avocado over it with some potato salad on the side. Â I had a soft shelled crab sandwich with the potato salad.
My sandwich and potato salad were very good and my wife decided her meal was the best she had in the Outer Banks.
Our service was spotty. Â Our server probably had tables a long way from ours and we didn't see him all that much. Â Thankfully, the restaurant has runners for the food so his absence did not delay food delivery. Â Refills on drinks, however, were more difficult to come by.
The place is a little pricey, in my opinion, for what you get. Â All in all, however, it was an excellent lunch and I'd have no hesitation in returning for my afternoon meal.
My wife and I had a "date night" here while the little guy was being corralled by his grandparents. This is a RARE opportunity and we were not disappointed. Hostess and server were very nice and our server had an extensive knowledge of the menu.
Starter: Â shrimp and grits. Â Yummy! Â Cooked to perfection and the cheesy grits were melt-in-your-mouth creamy. Â
Entrees:
Scallops - cooked just right. Not rubbery or soggy with a nice sear. The slaw was a nice compliment.
Crab cakes: Â huge lumps of crab with no filler whatsoever. Very fresh tasting. My wife makes a mean crab cake (so she knows a thing or two about crab cakes) and we both agreed that these were top notch.
Dessert:
Pecan pie with homemade whiskey ice cream was fantastic. Great flavor combinations done very well.
Strawberry rhubarb cobbler with homemade lemon ice cream was also very very tasty.
Overall, a delicious meal that was a bit expensive, but well worth it. For a special occasion, we'd definitely go again.
If you visit Duck, NC, you must stop into this wonderful place at one end of the waterfront shops. Â Every meal I have ever had here has been delicious and perfectly executed. Â Service has always been impeccable. Â This is as close to fine dining that you can get in this wonderful little town in the Outer Banks. Â
During our last visit to Duck, we stopped in 3 times (twice for a light lunch and once for dinner). Â Each time we stopped in, we sat at the bar. Â Tommy took great care of us during our lunch visits while John took over at dinner. Â Views of the sound from the bar are as good as from any table. Â
It's important to note, the restaurant, to include the bar, closes at about 2:30 and reopens for dinner at 5:00 so if you expect to have a late afternoon lunch or drink while out shopping, you might be out of luck. Â
For lunch, both days we enjoyed the house made soup of the day. Â The first was a potato and sweet onion soup. Â It was delicious and nicely thick without being overly creamy. Â I should have ordered a bowl to begin with, but went with a cup and ended up ordering a second cup because it was so tasty. Â The second day, the soup was a tomato curry bisque. Â Again delicious with just the slightest hint of curry. Â Both days the perfect light lunch on a somewhat cold, blustery day. Â The bread basket served on the side is delicious as well.
We had dinner at the Blue point just one night in our last visit - we had to start with their baby back ribs appetizer. Â The meat is fall of the bone tender and so full of flavor. Â I wanted to try the cider brined pork chop, but was craving a steak so had to go with the beef tenderloin. Â If you are going to order a steak in a beach town, this is definitely the place to do that. Â Tender, flavorful and perfectly prepared.
The wine list is impressive. Â in fact you can view their cellar as you enter the restaurant to the right of the bar. Â They offer a number of selections by the glass, but their bottle selection is what sets them apart from other restaurants in the area - wonderful! Â We stop in at least once on every visit to the Outer Banks!
This seems to be the top dining destination in Duck and it came highly recommended by everyone we know. While it's not going to blow you away with culinary creativity, it is a very good restaurant. The ambiance is sort of upscale diner meets upscale sports bar, although without any of the rowdiness those settings often evoke. It's also located in the waterfront shops complex that has a boardwalk and offers picturesque western views over the sound. The food, on average, was the best we ate in Duck - it's definitely everyone's favorite restaurant here for a reason.
Recommended: Trout , Crabcakes, Carolina Crab Salad
One of my favorite places !!!
Have been there for Brunch on Sundays, For Lunch and Dinner and not once been disappointed ! from the waiting staff to the bar people, menu, food, ambiance , music, it all comes in a great harmony.
I love the drink specials, the food, the desserts are to die for !!! and the egg pudding crab thing in the brunch menu (i don't remember the name) is like going to heaven in a spoon full of bread !!
The she crab soup is great!! Amazing wine list too ! And the little bar outside is great to catch the sunset while you wait for your table, so make sure you get there earlier and drink a cocktail while you wait .
Alta is the BEST waitress there ! So make sure you request her... what a lovely girl ! a big warm smile, the best recommendations (always follow her in that... eat what she says.. ).. we LOVE her !
Yelp describes two stars as "Meh. I've experienced better" and that's exactly right. Â My husband and I made reservations last week and went on a Saturday night and our reaction was "meh, way overpriced." Â For both of us for drinks and dinner cost over $200 with tip and the food was uninspired and the service was particularly disappointing. Â
This is a great example of a restaurant that got lazy and stopped trying hard enough because it has two things going for it naturally: Â 1.) It's one of the only upscale restaurants in Duck, a resort town for the upper middle class and 2.) it's right on the sound waterfront and there are surprisingly few restaurants with a view like that.
It's a shame, they rest on their laurels when they could be great. Â My husband and I arrived on time and waited for about 5-10 minutes while the hostess flirted with a random man casually and described to him all the other better places he could go for dinner, completely ignoring us. Â Finally another waitress approached and said curtly "name??" and then said "yup, okay you can have a table" and escorted us to a table nowhere near a window. Â
If this were a casual dining experience I would never have mentioned this, because who cares really, but if you're charging what they're charging and purporting to be a more upscale experience, you just have to train your staff better. Â
The food was also pretty uninspired. Â I adore crab cakes and mine was just okay--not bad, just not that memorable either. I got a much, much better crab cake at Kill Devil Grill down in Kill Devil Hills.
They also served a canape of corn bread with cream cheese to start. Â It's a nice touch to have a canape, but this corn bread was dry and the addition of cream cheese was just bizarre. Â They also don't pay any attention to the bread and butter, the bread is ordinary and the butter is under salted. Â They just don't pay any attention to detail and it's hard to justify the cost when the restaurant shows no care.
I will say their desserts are good-- my husband liked his cheesecake and I loved my pecan pie with bourbon ice cream-- my compliments to the pastry chef!
I'd say skip it and look elsewhere unless you just don't care about paying a little more becuase you want a waterfront view and a decent glass of wine.
You are not going to find a better fine dining experience anywhere one the route 12 section of the Outer Banks. Â This place has been the best for over a decade and is consistently top notch.
My wife had the she crab soup which she said was perfect. Â I chose to start with a traditional manhattan on the rocks which got me prepped nicely for for the fantastic Crab Cake entree. Â Almost needed a knife to cut through the cakes there was so much crab meat. Â The coos coos topped withs cucumber went perfectly with the crab and avocado sauce. Â Â Others had the beef and porker chops and praised them highly.
We left plenty of room for deserts. Â The warm pecan pie topped with bourbon ice cream was superb. Â The others had an old fashioned Stewart's Root Beer float and good olde Orange Sherbet.
The place is beautiful inside since being remodeled 5-6 years ago and the open kitchen adds a terrific touch of class tom the place. Â Don't go to OBX and skips this place if you're a foodie. Â You'll love it. Â Guaranteed.
PS. Â The double espresso was served in the perfect espresso cup :-)
When it comes to the Outerbanks, this place gets five stars. Â Not that I have eaten at a bazillion restaurants in the Outerbanks to compare it to, but with food this fresh and upscale in a beach town, it's a standout. Â I'm sure that half the other places with a prime location overlooking the Sound would be able to slide by on ambiance alone - not Blue Point Bar & Grill!
My favorite part of the meal was my arugula salad topped with crab meat. Â Don't let me forget to mention the tomatoes - they were unreal! Â So flavorful - not mealy masses of mush like I'm used to seeing. Â It was healthy, seasoned to perfection and showed a true appreciation for seasonal flavors. Â And my peach mojito cocktail was spot on. Â Loved it, and don't forget to walk off those calories on the boardwalk afterwards!
Food was great, as always. The best on the Outer Banks. Outdoor bar is great, awesome view and great ambiance.
Would have been 5 stars, except our waitress, who was efficient, was incredibly grumpy. She was very unpleasant. Â
Even I had to suffer with her through dinner again, I would still go back!
The original fine dining option in Duck! Â
Great food, interesting menu, attentive chefs and great service.
This is a diverse menu with a lot of options to appeal to many palettes. Â You have a lot of seating options from tables, booths and high tables in the main dining room, to a quieter porch seating area, and finally a SUPERB lawn sound-front bar that his a hidden gem in Duck. Â Go there for sunsets, specials and live music. If you have a dinner reservation, get there an hour early and sit on the lawn and enjoy some cocktails.
The food is excellent, but priced accordingly with smaller portions than you might expect. If you know that going in, you won't have any problems ordering 3-4 courses to experience many different flavors. Â OR, go for lunch to sample their menu with a much cheaper tab.
While reservations may get full, if you show up as a couple later in the evening, you can probably get seated for a late dinner or deserts, so don't feel like you have to make reservations if you just want to play it by ear.
Worth a visit.
We had a lovely lunch on the 4th of July at Blue Point. Being from DC, it didn't seem expensive, but for Duck, it isnt for everybody.
We ordered the chilled tomato gazpacho with crab meat and two salads (Melon & arugula and Caesar). Good portions, beautiful view, and friendly staff. Next trip, maybe we'll try dinner.
Gourmet southern food, from the farm to the heart. My favorite restaurant in the US. I have eaten here more then 80 times since the opening. I've watched it grow from a small 8 table dining room into its beautiful current layout.
Through all the years the preparation and quality of food has never disappointed. It helps to remain under the same ownership and guidance. Catfish and local yellowfin tuna are always delicious. I dream(weekly) of the she crab bisque and key lime pie. Reservations are a must during the busy summer season.
This was my family's second visit to Blue Point. The first was three years ago and we were just as amazed last night as we were in the past. We arrived a little early for our 7:30 reso. and despite a somewhat full waiting area, we checked in with the greeters and were seated after a short wait. Three years ago we didn't arrive until after the sunset and upon our view this time we realized this is a must!
Our server, Chris, was well-informed and described everything with perfect detail; including the appetizer special which was pufferfish, "a local delicacy that we call sugar toads." While ordering we made him aware of a vegetarian at the table and he told us that the kitchen will do a series of 'tapas' from the hot and cold lines which will create a dish of 5-6 items.
First course, aside from ordering the sugar toads to share, we also started with Carolina shrimp (served with grits), she-crab soup, and roasted tomato soup. All were superb, including the 'bone-in' pufferfish that were three perfect little finger foods. For the second course most of us chose salads; the Caesar was probably one of the best I have ever had and my brother said the local asparagus was great as well. Finally for the main course; first of all our vegetartian loved her selection and didn't leave a single morsel on her plate. My Father had the seared scallops, Mom and I had the short-rib, Lil' Brother had the soft-shell crabs and Big Brother and my Girlfriend had the Grouper (off-menu entree). Each plate was beautiful and for the most part devoured with oohs and aahs.
We were all so full that we passed on dessert despite the menu trying to persuade us otherwise. Overall this was one of the best family dinners we have ever had and these things have been happening for over 30 years so I would venture to say that the Blue Point knows exactly what they are doing and have continued to get better at it in the 20+ years they have been doing it!
Bravo, we will be back!
I had a very nice lunch at Blue Point while in town for the OBX marathon. Blue Point has the reputation of being among the best restaurants on the Outer Banks and it did to dissapoint. What is great is the lunch menu is similar to the dinner menu, has generous portions but is about half the price. I started with a tomato curry bisque which was tasty and then opted for the fried catfish over a bed of jambayla with cornbread. I am used to catfish and cornbread both having a dry texture, but at Blue Point they are actually moist and the flavor quite good.
Blue Point has a few beers on tap and specialty cocktails and the wine is very reasonably priced. Our server was attentive and professional, but not the most personable server we have had. One of the nicest aspects of Blue Point is the awesome view of the sound, the beautiful scenery results in a peaceful and romantic ambiance. I considered awarding five stars to Blue Point, but had high expectations and while the food was really good, it was not outstanding. I definitely will come back next time I am in town; if the food is just a smidgeon better I will have to revise my rating upwards. Blue Point is worth a visit if you are on the Outer Banks.
My boyfriend and I decided to try this place tonight, and we were just about the first people there, so we were seated immediately. We were given the option of sitting at the bar or at a table, the implication being you could also order off the bar menu (whatever that is) if you sat in the bar. We opted for a table.
I'll say this: they do not rush you in and out here. Ample time was given between drink orders and perusing the menu, to clearing, to dessert. Our dinner was about an hour and a half as a result. (Not that this is a bad thing; just an observation.) I also got to watch the sunset (my boyfriend sat facing away; on the other hand, he was blocking the sun to keep it out of my eyes a good portion of dinner).
I ordered the pork chop (which was in bone and huge), and my boyfriend got the catch of the day, seared mahi mahi. Very flavorful. For dessert we had apple cobbler--yum. Luckily, they were able to give us the a la mode ice cream in a separate dish (food allergy), which was appreciated.
We enjoyed our meal quite a bit. Nice ambiance and the view can't be beat. We'll definitely eat here again.
I had low hopes for dining options on my first vacation to the Outer Banks. Â What a pleasant surprise to discover the superb Blue Point Bar & Grill, which ranks among my best dining experiences ever.
Dinner was flawless from start to finish -- even the mixed drinks (Patron Sunset and Dark & Stormy) were perfect. Â My wife and I shared a beet and arugula salad -- all ingredients were fresh and delectable (and we both previously detested beets). Â Our appetizers were the hoisin-glazed ribs and shrimp with udon noodles. Â Both dishes were cooked perfectly -- the ribs were especially remarkable.
I had the beef tenderloin. Â Buttery, juicy, perfectly seasoned -- it was one of the best pieces of beef I've ever had, making me question my considerably higher expenditures at other top steakhouses. Â My wife had the pasta with shrimp, sausage, and cream sauce -- not as heavenly as my dish, but still very good.
Desserts are the Achilles' heel of many restaurants, but that was far from the case at Blue Point. Â My dark chocolate brownie generated a massive flood of endorphins. Â My wife's biscuit with rhubarb and blueberries was also very delicious. Â Both dishes included ice creams made with buttermilk, resulting in the smoothest ice cream either of us have ever had. Â Even the coffee was fantastic.
Our server was excellent -- very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu offerings. Â The ambiance and decor initially struck me as somewhat casual for a fine-dining establishment, but I quickly grew to enjoy my surroundings. Â (And who wants to eat at a stuffy restaurant during a beach vacation, anyway?) Â Our table also had a perfect view of the sunset over the sound. Â
Though Blue Point isn't inexpensive by conventional standards, I still consider it to be a great value given the quality of the food and service. Â I've paid far more for equal or lesser fare at various Top Chef / Iron Chef / Michelin-starred restaurants around the country. Â Blue Point is a true gem of the Outer Banks, and a must-visit for any food lovers visiting OBX.
I was there this past weekend with three other girls. Our food took an hour to come out, during which time our waiter did not check up on us and avoided eye contact. Later when we were paying the check we asked to speak to the manager about the tardiness of our meal and she was very rude rather than apologetic. She basically said "So what." This isn't exactly the reaction you expect after spending about $300 on the meal and a bottle of higher end wine.
I'm sorry, but your food isn't good enough to make up for poor treatment coupled with a high price-tag. I don't think I'll be back there.
Top-notch service from Elaine here. She was like a Swiss Watch -- never missed a tick. She brought this blue cheese olive martini to my father in law that was so full it was convex on top and she did not spill it. Impressive.
The food is also delicious. Well balanced and bursting with flavor. There's a sweet deal, three-course menu for $33.00. The pork and the trout are equally delicious, so you can't go wrong by choosing either one. For desserts, though, I would pick the spice cake over the chocolate cake. The chocolate cake is really, really rich, and the flavor of it didn't quite go with the rest of the bbq-inspired meal.
Atmosphere is gorgeous and refined, but completely relaxed all at the same time.
OMG...they best restaurant in the Outer Banks!!!! My boyfriend and I ate here last week  Friday on our last day in the Outer Banks. And like the saying goes, Save The Best For Last!!!
I had started researching alot of restaurants before we left and all i read were great things about Blue Point Bar and Grill so of course I had to try this place out for myself.
All i can say is while it is expensive for an Outer Banks restaurant, it was soooooooooooooooooo and i mean sooooooooooo worth it. I ordered the trout and my boyfriend ordered the catfish with Zucchini slaw and crab meat, and his dish was the best. Dont get me wrong, i enjoyed the trout very much but it was something about that catfish that made u want to "slap you mama"!!
Now usually I dont order dessert at any restaurant but when I saw the Southern Pecan Pie with Bourbon Ice Cream, how could i resist? And i'm so glad i ordered it because it was the best dessert i have ever had....sshhhh, dont tell my mom..LOL!! But really there is something sinfully good about that dessert and my stomach hurt so much from being full but i was determined to finish every crumb. So worth it!!!
I will be back to this restaurant is Oct for my birthday!!!
Best meal in the Outer Banks. Â There really wasn't a close second.
Wife was drinking the "fruit cocktail" and I thoroughly enjoyed the "patron sunset".
Food began with a small amuse bouche of herb and cheese on a Breton cracker. Â Nice.
Wife's appetizer was salad with mozzarella, the best tomatoes, and pignoli nuts. Â Perfectly dressed! Â Outstanding.
My appetizer was grilled shrimp with Virginia ham and pineapple. Â The shrimp tasted so fresh and the ham and pineapple combo worked well for me.
Wife's entree was steak and potatoes with perfect mushrooms. Â I am not doing this dish any justice in my description. Â She loved it!!! Â
My entree was a sautee of salmon and crabmeat over spoonbread. Â Holy cow. Â An amazing trio. Â I will be thinking about this dish for many weeks to come.
Dessert was a brownie for her and a peach and blueberry cobbler with buttermilk ice cream for me.
Do not miss going here if you are near Duck!
A perfect end to a quick weekend getaway. Fortunately OBX wasn't busy as we were able to slip in for a birthday celebration dinner and enjoyed views of the water.
Our server's unsolicited recommendation validated our appetizer choice for the seared sea scallops. The truffle vinaigrette perfectly balanced the savory pork belly cubes and piquant spring onions. The two scallops were perfectly prepared.
My disappointment that they were not serving the softshell crab atop creamy grits I spied in a menu magazine was short lived. The beef tenderloin with fingerling potatoes + spring mushrooms and sauteed spinach was pure bliss. The steak knife wasn't necessary for the buttery rich medium rare filet.
The potatoes were prepared whole and tossed in a truffle creme fraiche and chives which is the only way I want my baked potatoes prepared from now on.
My boyfriend went with the swordfish steak prepared with a fruit salsa atop a bed of cous cous. Other than the empty plate he left I have no review as swordfish ain't my thing.
When it's your birthday you can get however many desserts you want, right? Well we chose two. The southern pecan pie (tart) was the best. Our runner up choice Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler was light and refreshing but wayyyy too much (definitely enough for two or four to enjoy). The cobbler was not prepared as you might expect as it had crunchy bits in the fruit mix with a lemon ice cream.
Another plus - half bottles of wine in addition to by the glass options.
Big fan of the establishment. Next time I'll make reservations in advance to enjoy views of the water in daylight.
Our return 6 months later was just as good. Â This really deserves the title of Best Restaurant on the OBX. Â
Perfectly cooked short rib appetizer, impossibly tender filet, solid baked catfish. Â The wine list shines with many affordable options in the $20-40/bottle range. Â It may not be a huge list but what's there is great. Â Any restaurant that carries D'Arenberg wines get a bit of a bonus in my book, too!
The service shines as brightly as the food. Â Southern hospitality in a casual, yet elegant environment.
P.S. Make reservations! Â We made them a month in advance and still had to wait a few minutes.
LOVE this restaurant . Â It is a MUST when on the OBX - by far the best! Â If you're lucky enough to score a reservation at sunset time, then cheers to you! Â ;-) Â
Consistantly great food and service. Â (as an aside, David is our favorite server in the place). Â
NYC level dining experience that you can enjoy in a very casual unassuming ambiance. Â Be sure to try the oyster stew -- and someone at the table must get the crabcakes. Â Enjoy!
The one place I have to eat at when I visit the Outer Banks. Â My family has been going here for years, despite living on the west coast, it's that good! Â This place has it all... inspiring vistas, awesome atmosphere, super staff, drinks and incredible food! Â You really can't loose here. Everything is always divine and everyone will be blown away.
I  love  Blue Point!
