My wife and I were staying at a friend's cabin in the next town over and the owner suggested we head to W. Jefferson for an "art crawl."  Though we missed the crawl, we stayed in town for dinner.  Based on reviews on Google, we tried Boondocks, having never been in W. Jefferson and not knowing the area or restaurants.  We thought, "it's a brewery; how bad could it be?"

The wait to be seated was almost an hour.  While we waited, the bartender ignored us for over 10 minutes, despite not being terribly busy, before we were finally able to get a glass of wine.

The waitress was the biggest problem - but I don't think it was her fault: she was completely overwhelmed, which is a management problem.  Busy night?  Doesn't matter - a good manager should expect busy nights.

The bacon-wrapped scallops were overcooked and dry, and at $11, much more expensive than they should have been.  We had to ask for bread.  My wife got the crab cake and I got the Asian-glazed salmon.  Both meals were luke-warm, and I'm being generous - and it took over 45 minutes before we even got our meals.  Although the flavoring of my meal was good, it was fairly simple and not terribly exciting - and certainly did not justify the price.  The meals were on par with Applebee's or Ruby Tuesday, not the 20+ meals we ordered.  Farm-raised salmon, with a splash of peanut sauce, asparagus and mashed potatoes is not a $23.00 meal.

I can't blame the kitchen or the waitstaff.  Yes, the service was terrible, but I got the impression it was a management problem, not a staff problem.  Fix the schedule, revise the menu, and dammit, offer a single beer on tap that's made on-site (there were none available that night) - you're a brewery!

Second visit since the new ownership.  Second time it took forever to get our food.  The only first was that my food was really cold.  My wife got one of their flatbread pizzas which was OK, if not a little bland, but at least it was hot.  I had a cheeseburger and fries- quite the formidable culinary challenge.  Both the CB and fries were cold.  I think it must have been ready some time before my wife's entrée.  Anyway, I didn't eat it, and  the waitress offered something else, but I didn't have another hour to wait.  I hope they get it together- this is a great concept for West Jefferson, but its gonna be tough with less than average food, long waits, and poor kitchen operations.  I'll give it another shot in a year or so.

When in the boonies this is definitely a nice place to grab some pub grub and a tasty pint or two.  They boasted about 20-ish beers on-tap some from NC and from all over.   I had two of the Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale seasonal draft and was tasty indeed.  Food was fine. Everyone including the kids were happy with their choices with your typical pub fare of mac n' cheese and hot dogs for kids and pasta & meatballs for the adults.  Meatballs I thought were pretty tasty.  Only thing I was missing was for a"brewing" establishment I didn't see they had any of their own make available.

We were in town for the annual family "decoration in the graveyard" and were looking for a good place to eat for dinner with the family. We had been to this pub before and the food was good. Burgers, pizza, salads and of course a bunch of beers on tap! When we got to the restaurant, there were a ton of people waiting so we put our name on the list and took a seat in the waiting area. They said it would be about 45 minutes before we could get a table so we had plenty of time to look over the menu. After about 10 minutes or so we were lucky and they called our name to seat us. Well what we didn't count on was having to wait another hour to get our food. The waitress took forever to come over to our table to just get drink orders. After about 30 minutes of waiting for our food, she offered us a basket of bread. Then 10 minutes later she came back to our table and mumbled something about why she hasn't brought us any bread yet, it was so noisy we couldn't hear what she said, and then she disappeared. After another 15 minutes or so, it seemed much longer, she finally brought us some bread and then a couple minutes later brought us our food. It was a bit odd and really what was the point of the bread if you're just going to bring out food to us?!

After finally getting our food, I had a flatbread pizza and a sandwich that I shared with my mom. Both were tasty and I would order them both again. The first time we went, I had a turkey burger and it was quite delicious. So far everything has been tasty and I would recommend this place to people that want a good meal.

The only thing I would suggest is on the weekends call ahead for reservations and when ordering burgers, ask for extra toppings. The toppings they put on the burgers are great, they just need more. I will be going back to this place when I visit again in a couple of months.

We were visiting the area and decided that we felt like a good burger for dinner.  This was a new place, since our last visit, so we decided to give them a try.  Their primary focus is beer, which I don't drink, so we went straight to the burger menu.
I was a little nervous when the waitress took our orders but didn't ask how we wanted the burgers cooked.  I was afraid that it was going to be cooked to death.  It arrived at a medium or less temperature - a little rare for my taste in burgers.  None the less, it was a nice size patty with good grill flavor.  I had ordered the "Carolina Burger," which comes with mustard, chili and cole slaw.  I asked to leave off the mustard which they did.  What keeps this from being a 4 star review was that the toppings on the burger were in such a small amount that you hardly knew they were there.  A burger with chili and slaw should have to be cleaned up with a fork, but nothing even threatened to fall off this one. It's really too bad, because from what I could taste, both were excellent.
If we go back (which we probably will), I'll be asking them to heap on those toppings and then maybe I can revisit this review with another star.  At least I hope so!

Two and a half stars, but rounding to three, using the Yelp integer scale.
Beer was good - lots of local selections including Blind Squirrel from Plumtree, NC!
Servers were nice but there were just too many problems over the course of lunch.
1.) Ordered local grass-fed angus burger with tomato, lettuce and bacon.  But when it was plopped in front of me, there was just beef and a bun - sweet!
2.) Sweet potato fries were a nasty color - two other people got them and they were bright orange - mine were brownish and all three orders were a little cold
3.) Ordered a Blind Squirrel tripel beer and got some sort of stout instead.
3.) Got charged for a $2 drink for a kids meal when it was supposed to be free.  At that point, we were anxious to leave so we didn't say anything about it.

This place has potential but they need to get things pulled together.  For now, I'd advise people to saddle up at the bar, order a tasty local pint, and get the special of the day.  The people I ate with said the special (bratwurst sliders) was good.

So my parents live in the sleepy little hollow of Todd, NC and when I'm in town visiting, I'm constantly looking for a decent place to eat.  Boone is a little bit of a drive and West Jefferson is right down the road.  There's not a lot of competition for food in the area so if you can make a good sandwich, I'm gonna give you a shot.  Unfortunately, this place is not it.  I went with my whole family and the we might as well all eaten at different tables.  Our food came out at different times, they messed up my order and my Mom's was cold.  Now I will say that the waitress and manager were beyond pleasant.  I feel like if Boondocks would work on their kitchen staff, this place would have some serious potential.  Unfortunately, It's got a long way to go.

Our family dined here last weekend.  We were big fans of the previous owners flatbread pizza..and though they still are on the menu they aren't as good as they used to be.  The food and service overall was disappointing.  I will go back again but only because I enjoyed the selection of draft beers and there are very few places to go I West Jeff.
