Good food, and it was fun to sit outside with our dog. Our dog was treated well, they brought him water right away.
Friends of mine decided we should meet here before putting the final touches on our 30th HS reunion. Â We had the pierogis (yum), I had pulled pork, one had liverwurst, and one had the fish po' boy. I forget what the 4th person had, but I know we all enjoyed it. Service slowed down as time went on and the place filled up, but other than that it was great.
Went here for dinner after spending some time at the beach. It was a sweltering hot day, so I wanted a nice cold beer. And that's what I got. A cold Heineken, however, as a lady, I would have appreciated a glass.
Food was good. I had several small plates to make my meal, including the Cajun shrimp and parmesan grits. Can you say Yum? Also had the deviled eggs and mac and cheese. Perfect dinner. Lots of carbs.
Décor is cool, with a distressed wood floor, a long bar which has a long list of beers on tap fully visible. The only negative was the service was SO SLOW. They waitress was pleasant enough, but it took almost 15 minutes to get my 2nd beer. I mean how long does it take to pop the top off a bottle? It was a bit busy, but my feelings on that is that the establishment should have enough help to cover the crowd. Other than that, high marks. We'll be back.
Beer Eyes, Full Bellies, Can't Lose!
That's what the sign above the door says and, to me, there really is no counterargument. Brickwall Tavern is probably one of the most popular and busy bars in AP, but after you've eaten here or ogled their beer list, it's certainly justified. With 24 quality/local brews on tap (with a few crappy domestics), any beer snob can certainly find something to suit their fancy.
If your stomach's growling, you can also get some quality food beyond the standard tavern menu items with a number of good sandwiches and appetizing dinners. There's even a raw bar during the evening hours if you're craving some oysters, shrimp or clams.
Even if you just want to pop in during Happy Hour, which runs from 4-7 PM, you can hang out at the bar, grab a drink and read all the witty signs plastered all over the brick wall. Basically, anytime is a good time, as long as you can get a seat.
I went to the Brickwall looking for a substantial meal. I was torn between the black bean burger and vegan chili. I went with the chili since most places have black bean burgers and I have not seen many places have vegan chili. I wish I went with the burger. At $10 it was a tiny bowl of bland chili. It came with less then 10 multi colored tortillas. Very disappointed. At $10 and listed under the plates section this should have been much larger. The waitress should have also mentioned that this was a small bowl. Cornbread should have also been served. Then I was charged $7. So their menu and the menu on the website says $10. But they charged me $7 and their menu under yelp says $7. A medium diet coke was $2.50. To pricey. At $2.50 the waitress should have offered re-fills. They do have homemade potato chips that were outstanding. They have the beer on tap listed large on the wall which I loved. It can be seen from anywhere in the bar.
Review Source:Great place!! Went here as a first time guest on my way to see Courtney Love at the Stone Pony. Very pretty place. Very big bar and restaurant area. They have their menus mounted on to heavy pieces of wood. Very cool looking. I liked that there was a small lunch menu, which means to me, they actually cook everything fresh. We ordered the perioges (which you can never get anywhere), the fried oyster po boy, and the southwestern salad. Omg. Everything was so good. The perogies were cooked perfectly. There was homemade buttermilk & chive dressing for the salad that was to die for!! Also freshly made tartar sauce for the po boy. Great experience. Would love to come back again when I am in that area. Service was excellent. The best part- was their dessert menu was ALL ice cream!! Floats, sundaes, and beer floats which I had never seen before. Def recommend.
Review Source:Really really love coming here! I have become seriously obsessed with the deviled eggs. They are delicious. All of the food is delicious. I love the craft beer selection. They change the selections VERY often, so chances are if you go back and want the same one you had last time (or even in the same visit) they might not have it on tap.
The mac & cheese is pretty delicious and the homemade potato chips are fantastic! Ask for them with the buttermilk dip instead of the blue cheese. It is really tasty.
Staff is right there to serve you, and they are pretty quick.
Definitely give Brickwall a try after you have hit the beach down the street or went shopping in some of the great stores nearby!
Went to the Brickwall Tavern for some pre-Stone Pony dining with a crew of 9 adults and 2 babies, and we were given a nice big table set aside from the crowd. The beer list was solid, and had something yummy on it for everyone. The food was decent, basic pub fare. I had the Portwine Burger which didn't really deliver, but the biscuits were pretty great and the apps were tasty. The service was pleasant - and for such a large table they didn't bother adding gratuity - which I think is classy move, and makes me want to leave more. Overall above-average pub restaurant with a cool aesthetic.
Review Source:Fantastic spot with a large beer selection and surprisingly tasty bar fare. Service was great as well, especially for our large party. Try the biscuits of the day and the potato chips with the onion sauce. I'm still dreaming of the BLT I got - crispy bacon, avocado, Granny Smith apples and a lemon aioli to finish it off. Sooo good!
Review Source:Brickwall Tavern is a go to if you are trying to avoid the overpriced boardwalk restaurants and looking for a much nicer vibe combined with both tourists and locals. The decor in this dive bar is what impressed me most! Â The bartender was particularly nice and let me try a strawberry beer on tap. Â They have a Great variety of beers here. Â The food was really good. I had the Granny Smith Blt with avocados. Â I def would come back again.
Review Source:One of the best places I like to frequent to have a few beers with some friends around Asbury.
Love their ever-changing beer drafts; there's always something new on tap.
I've only had some of their food - mac & cheese, pretzels, chips & dip, wings and oysters when they're available in the summer during happy hour. They've all been good.
And the bartenders have always been fun, friendly and helpful.
I went Brick Wall on Mother's Day May 12th, my boyfriend and I both ordered cheeseburgers, very disappointed meat tasted really old, I thought for sure we would both be sick.  We left most of our meal, It was also really loud in the restaurant  they were playing Bingo at 1pm in the afternoon,  Very unpleasant experience, I have been here often, I will not return.
Review Source:I have been here many times, sometimes just for a beer or two, sometimes for lunch or dinner. Â I live neabry and whenever I have friends come from out of town I love to bring them here. Â The atmosphere is awesome especially with the funny signs all over the walls, you can always pick out at least a few that cause a great laugh and start up a conversation.
Such a great beer selection that is always changing so every time you go you know you're going to get to try something new. Â The menu is so good, I try to get something different every time I go and everything is great! Â I'm a sucker for their homemade chips and the sharp cheddar sandwich! Â I highly recommend at least stopping in to check it out and have a beer, of course I think you should stay for dinner though!
Have been to Brickwall many a times; a few times to party and toss back cheap beer, a couple times to eat lunch and sip craft beers and a few times in the morning to drink away sorrows; the place definitely has character and embodies the spirit of Asbury Park - unique, rustic and pleasantly charming. The menu is diverse and is surely distinctive; you will find something on here that will catch your eye; I enjoyed the open-faced turkey sandwich reminiscent of post thanksgiving day lunch; I also thoroughly enjoyed their port wine burger w/ either tater tots, fries or sweet potato fries; their craft beers are delicious - some are stronger and more expensive than others; always entertaining to calculate the alcohol per dollar formula in my head to make my decision; usually go with a strong Belgian or blonde ale; this place is a staple of Asbury Park and is a must visit
P.S. it smells weird in here
So good.nthey have a great beer selection. Â The bartenders are knowledgable about their beers and other drinks you may want.
A love reading all the signs that they have all over the place. Â The restaurant has a real comfy feel to it too.
Now the food. Yummy. Was hesitant about the shrimp and grits but was convind by the bar tender to try them. Be recommendation. Sme with the macand cheese. I haven't had a bad meal here. Â Love their sliders and steaks.
Great place to go to catch up with friends. Tuesday trivia over the summer is so fun.
Nice decor and decent & friendly service - and that's all the positives. They score low on the main event: food. Their pork chops was touted as their best and most popular dish and it was just below average in my opinion. Two others in our party that night also had the pork chops and said that same. A little disappointed in the end.
Review Source:Sunday fun-day! Great place to hang and sip a few really good, really spicy $5 Bloody Mary's on a lazy Sunday afternoon!
Ask for a few bingo cards and pick out a couple bites to eat. Â We went with the spinach dip and chips, pierogies, mini sliders and mini falafel sandwiches. Â Food was OK as far as bar food goes - Â good, cheap and the small menu actually provides a lot of variety.
My favorite part was playing bingo, reading all those crazy signs on the wall (I spy a Yelp mention!) and downing those tasty-tasty Bloody Mary's!
Definitely a great place to drop into if you're in Asbury Park. Â If those Bloody Mary's weren't so damn good I would be all over their extensive beer selections and probably try a beer flight....maybe next time.
Brickwall is a fantastic joint. An amazing beer/food selection, great atmosphere, and the bartenders are very knowledgeable & attentive.
The food is high quality American bar food. The burgers, sandwiches, wings, chili etc. are all standard pub items - but the extra quality is very noticeable. The pricing on the food is quite reasonable (although the craft beers can drive your bill up).
If you're looking to drink cheap you can do that as well. Something for everyone at top quality and a decent price is why this place is always hopping year round.
5 stars for the beer selection and 1 star for the food.
This started out for us as a pleasant surprise in Asbury Park. Â The beer selection was top notch (Riverhorse, Kane, Abita, etc) and decently priced ($6-$12). Â The food menu looked promising for inspired pub food (perogies, pork roll sliders, grits) but the execution was awful. Â The spinach dip was inedible and the perogies and other items were obviously frozen. Â For such an awesome beer menu, the food was a huge disappointment.
The atmosphere here was welcoming and the food was scrumptious.
I'd never been to Asbury Park before and I was glad my friend knew the lay of the land. She said it would be best to go to Brickwall Tavern and she was right. People here have their own slight edge, while still being all around nice. There are these odd little signs all over the place - some make sense and some are just odd, but it'd be a great place for a first date because you'd have something to look at besides your watch if you were counting the minutes until you left.
They had a great selection of beers and I went with the Stone IPA and, one of my standbys, Purple Haze. For food, I decided on the avocado BLT with homemade potato chips. Delicious-o!
The number one reason to come to Brickwall is for their great draft selections, many of which you won't find commonly at other bars, or expect to find at other bars. The beers range from affordable to expensive, but I definitely appreciate their willingness to have such an expansive beer selection. Other drinks - especially mixed drinks, can be pricey.
However, its a fun place to hang and have a drink with friends. There's plenty of room to find a spot, and the decor and ambiance are comfortable. The food isn't terrible - they have great variety when it comes to vegan, vegetarian, and omni - sandwiches & other snacks which are affordable. The food is decent, too, so I find it worth my money.
The service is definitely lacking, which is why I give Brickwall 3 stars. The bartenders are cool people, but the table staff can be moody. Our server had an attitude from the start with us,  a  big group of seven, and the meal turned easily into a 2 1/2 hour meal because it felt like she was avoiding our table.
But Brickwall is exactly as the 3 star ratings says, A-OK!
This place is awesome. It's a unique restaurant/bar with options for absolutely anyone (vegans, meat lovers, healthy eaters, etc.). The good selection is great and although I didn't get drinks, the bar looked pretty varied as well.
They have a cool menu and also specials including soups of the day, biscuits of the day, salads, burgers, and much more. I had the special soup, split pea with potato and bacon, which was good. Split the biscuit of the day, chive and sour cream, which was really delicious. For my main meal I had the "British Burger" off the specials, which was a huge slab of delicious beef with cheddar cheese and mushrooms all between a giant English muffin. Really great. Came with these delicious kettle chips. Good service at all. I would definitely go back.
Wow, what a great restaurant! Â We didn't expect much out of Asbury Park, and we were pleasantly surprised to read about Brickwall and their craft beer selection. Â We were even more surprised by the quality of the food and service.
Edamame plate is huge and a bargain for 7 bucks. Â The hot fried chicken salad was well constructed with the right balance of ingrediants. Â And the extra sharp cheddar sandwich was a unique and creative take on the standard cheese sandwich.
Service was excellent. Atmosphere was energetic but not too noisy.
If you're looking for a good craft beer selection and a creative moderately priced menu, Brickwall is the place to go!
Been here twice with family in tow. Loud, with 3 TVs over the long bar, each featuring a different sporting event. Lots of funky signage on the walls with advice about listening to cole slaw and such. Paper tablecloths (doesn't bother me one bit) on small tables.
We considered getting the calamari ($12) but we decided to apply funds to a good dessert instead. Tonight I eschewed a basic sandwich and had grouper w/potatoes and asparagus ($18); wifey had crab cake; the kids had a regular burger ($10 and mac & cheese($6). All the fare was decent, albeit a bit bland. Portions were okay, but not thrilling (I'm cheap so I love to take home half and enjoy it the next day for lunch).
The real shocker was wifey's Foxglove Zin, which was $11 (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FnDVBqX&s=9c19094257ef635a99cefdaa7ce7b2b6b79d99935db3487d5cb4a97c7b7db076" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://bit.ly/nDVBqX</a>) for a small glass. Now, some might say we should have asked, but we ain't spring chickens and especially considering this is the Brickwall Tavern and not Tavern-on-the-Green, it never occurred to us that a small glass of wine would be north of six bucks let alone nearly double that. My pint of Rogue Double-chocolate stout ($8 <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FbZErp1&s=4711be08306ca31969334ddaf16c94d184b98cd334987ff4ce6c4b2b8277156d" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://bit.ly/bZErp1</a>) was good, and since I rarely get more than one, I didn't mind paying a bit more for something I hardly ever have. I do need to mention that despite being cute-as-a-button and friendly, our server had no idea what 'white merlot' or 'red zinfandel' was. Maybe she's new, but if you work in a place like that, do a bit of reading.
We scanned the dessert menu (starting at $3) but opted to walk around AP (Asbury Park) for a bit and went to Casa di Dolci Gelateria, which was across the street.
Not a bad place, mind, you, but overpriced for what you get. If you're into trying different beers and don't mind the noise level, the bar seemed a very social place-to-be for meet-ups with friends.
I think a restaurant has a problem in the kitchen when the waiter brings out a BLT and asks... "is the bread burnt too much for you?" ...it was BLACK! What kind of cook/chef would even let a plate out with burnt toast?
It was about 2:00pm, on 4th of July... there were plenty of open tables.
The service was somewhat slow. After the waiter took our order, 5 minutes later, a second waiter asked us if we had been served? I can understand why she may have thought we weren't since we were sitting there for about 10 mins without anything on our table (no drinks). The table (of 6) next to us, actually went up to the bar to buy their drinks.
Food was "so-so". I ordered a grilled pastrami and cheese. ...dripping with grease (I didn't order the dripping grease part). Wifey ordered the "Burnt BLT", and my daughter had the burger with homemade cold potato chips that were missing... let's see... Oh yeah... "FLAVOR".
Do I have a reason to go back for the food? Â Nah. Â The beer? Maybe- plenty of variety of drafts.
I've only been here once so far (my husband and I plan on going again tonight), so obviously we enjoyed it if we're going back a 2nd time :) Â I don't frequent Asbury Park very much, but it's really got some interesting bars and restaurants so I'm not sure why I've been ignoring it for so long. Â
My husband and I visited Brickwall on a weeknight. Â The restaurant was pretty filled for a weekday, but we were greeted by the hostess and seated promptly. Â A waitress came right over to our table and asked if we had any questions, what we wanted to drink, etc. Â There were some very good beers on tap (a huge plus for us as craft beer enthusiasts), so we each ordered a beer and looked over the menu.
We ordered the calamari for an appetizer, and my husband ordered a pork chop dish, I ordered the crab cake sandwich. Â I also tried their beer cheddar soup, which was good but a bit salty. Â We were very impressed with the quality of food overall, and my husband is a chef so he can be a little picky. Â I had a hard time making a decision on what I wanted because everything looked so good.
All in all we had a good time, the waitress was very friendly and attentive, the beer selection was good and the menu had some great offerings. Â Basically this combination is exactly what I'd want to see at a bar/tavern that I'd frequent often.
Came in with a few friends after riding bike along the boardwalk. Â Came in not expecting much, but I was was already impressed that they server local beers, Carton Brewery (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) in particular. Â Despite my reservations about ordering a Cheese Steak sandwich outside of Phili - It was quite good.
I would go back and the portions were very hearty I may add.
AP locals sometimes like to rag on the Brickwall for being a cheesy tourist place. I prefer to think of it as the "entry level" Asbury hangout for people who might be otherwise scared off by the town's reputation. A solid beer selection, varied menu and relaxed atmosphere all contribute to a place where I often take people who are new in town just to get their foot in the door of the Asbury bar scene. Granted, I'm pretty much over the place myself, but I still go there on occasion when I'm with a group.
The Brickwall is a "safe" place in more ways than one. The food is classic American steakhouse/bistro/comfort food type stuff that everyone likes, with a few unexpected options like falafel and edamame for those who are so inclined.
All in all it's a solid spot for dinner and drinks, but don't get too attached because there are tons of other bars and restaurants to explore on and around Cookman Ave.
Brickwall has definitely declined in quality over the past year. Originally I had no complaints but as of the last few months I find myself reluctant to go back.
The service has never been good but I'd now consider it to be terrible. Upon entering you are (not) greeted by a blase hostess who, once finding out how many, walks off to seat you without the exchange of a word or a smile. The waitress eventually got around to my table and barely spoke. I ordered a hard cider off the drink menu but was later approached by the waitress to have her spew the words "no cider". No problem, instead I ordered an L.I.T. I took a sip and it tasted like water and sour mix, no alcohol. I ended up having to play it safe and ordered a beer on draft. We had to catch our waitress to tell her we were ready to order. All I ordered was a side of sweet potato fries that were alright. The food is normally pretty good.
I hope this decline is only temporary. It'd be sad to see this place go down the pooper. The front of the house needs a major revamp. Service is the number one reason these places close. Maybe those guys with the mustaches look hip but they don't know how to run a restaurant. Oh, and I understand loud Sunday night football but the volume was so loud that it was difficult to understand.
