My fiancee and I came here to celebrate my birthday the other night. She mentioned it was my birthday, and we were told I'd get a free cake. I thought a slice. Nope, it was a whole chocolate cake to take home. For free. I was surprised, and I also felt a little bad since my birthday was on a Tuesday and one pizza was free too that we took home. We loved the Margharita pizza, and I enjoyed the Shepherd's Pie. We actually think that even though the BBC is not touted as a pizza place, the BBC has the best pizza in the area. The atmosphere was exactly what I hoped for...cozy, old pub/tavern style, with great alt rock music playing in the background. Our server was so friendly and well deserving of a nice big tip! This is definitely our favorite place to go.
Review Source:This was the 3rd strike... BBC Pembroke is now out! Â Over the past two years, the experiences here have gotten progressively worse. Â I so wanted it to get better here, there's a good menu, I like the decor and it's super convenient... but this was not the case. Â Against my better judgement, my boyfriend and I stopped here at about 10 pm on a Friday night. Â We sat at a table in the bar area and found it humorous that for 45 min of the hour we were there, the band was warming up... Â tap tap tap on the drum, test the mike, test the guitar... for almost an hour. Â Anyways, we got a beer and split three apps, one of which was the spinach dip. Â Hands down the worst spin dip I've ever had... clearly frozen and must have had ice on it because it was extremely watery and a soup-like consistency... wouldn't even stay on the chip. Â The servers were completely aloof, waited quite a while to be asked if we wanted a 2nd beer... my bf suggested I text the server that I'd like another, since she was on the other side of the bar on her phone for several minutes at a time. Â Â We didn't get another drink so we could just get out of there.... Â So much potential, but needs a management and staff overhaul. Â For now, the BBC is 86'd!
Review Source:I took grandma here on one of our date nights... so you'll hear two opinions alright. Â
For starters we got fried calamari. Â To be honest, this was the best dish of the night and although the portion was small, it was tasty. Â Part of the reason is that the calamari is doused in a sweet and spicy sauce that made you feel as though you were eating "Chinese."
Moving on... I ordered the basil pesto encrusted mahi mahi. Â Basil pesto sounds delish doesn't it, especially if it's "encrusted." Â As it turned out, it was a bland piece of fish with tasteless pesto simply spread on top after the fish was cooked.
Grandma got the grilled chili shrimp orzo. Â What sounded great was a disaster of a meal for an 86 year old. Â For some reason they felt the need to blanket the entire salad in an inch high pile of bean sprouts. Â As I was watching her carefully wade through this jungle like game of pick-up-sticks to find the shrimp and orzo on the bottom she was exhausted. Â I tried the shrimp though, that wasn't bad but the rest was bland. Â
"Kid tested... grandma not approved."
An extra star because of the the beers on tap.
I've experienced better pub food/atmosphere. Overall the BBC in Hanover is hit or miss for both food and service. Â It could be a TON better if they got their shit together and stayed consistent, but unfortunately that is not the case. Â Â Expect to wait a long time for your pizza on Tuesday nights buy one get one free.... management says that you should know to wait a full hour for a pizza because its a busy night. Â - No, i refuse to wait that long only to get a cold soggy pizza, so I will not be returning because of it.
Review Source:Great selection of beers, attentive waitstaff, great food. There is always a nice atmosphere inside. Tuesdays they have buy one get one pizza, and Wednesdays are .25 wing night. Personal favorites are the steak tips, wings, appetizer ribs and the lettuce wraps. Eaten here many times, can't say I've ever had a bad meal.
Review Source:Keeping in mind that there are not many high quality bars/pubs etc around here, BBC lives up to that billing. If you are going to have a few beers, enjoy a game or some live music while getting drunk, then it's a fine spot. If you are going to consume food, then prepare to be disappointed (even by bar food standards). I firmly believe that my high school cafeteria served better tasting food with higher quality ingredients. The steak "tacos" are a joke. The hard corn shells are basically right out of an Ortega box and crumble in your hands when you bite into them. The "steak" was overcooked and had zero flavor. The mahi mahi sandwich was 90% bread and 10% fish/toppings. Come on guys, this is Boston! Grill a nice piece of fresh local fish and serve it piping hot on a bun or roll that enhances the flavor, not provides the entire substance of the meal. Perhaps their traditional dishes like shepherd's pie or bangers 'n mash are good, but I would not go back to try them.
Review Source:This has to be one of my favorite restaurants/ bars around. I love the selection of beers. They have beers from different parts of the world I would have never known existed without the BBC. You can't go wrong watching football there and getting their wing specials and an ice cold pint of your favorite British beer!!
Review Source:When this place first came to Pembroke, it was great! Â One of the first new restaurants and fun places for entertainment and younger people to hang out. Â Then their food quality went down. Â Soon after that, it became apparent that on multiple occasions they didn't clean their taps when a lot of my family/friends there got really ill after having just one beer. Â I still go back sometimes for music, but I always get a bottled beer, which is too bad.
Review Source:I really wanted to like this place, but I just can't. The drinks are WAY overpriced, the bartenders have absolutely no personality, the servers rarely make an appearance during the meal, and the food is just alright. It's a shame because they pull off the dark, pub-style British tavern look really well, but then fail to deliver. This place is the definition of "meh" and doesn't come close to being worth the money.
Review Source:I have been to this location about 4 times and I could not hev been happier. I have gotten lunch, dinner and have also been there for live music and drinks. The service is fantastic especially for a chain and beleive iot or not their pizza is amazing., the burgers are definetly a must have as well. the beer selection is second to none and the prices are far lower than I figured they would be.
Review Source:Sitting at BBC since 6:15, still no food at 7:10. Â There are 3 other tables with similar disgruntled looks on their faces. Mind u we were (un)lucky enough to show up for poker night so more than half of the dining room is closed. They also just turned the lights up to library-bright in order to accommodate the incoming poker players. Seriously? Â I'm freaking out. Â If half the dining room is closed why the issue with our under-complicated grilled cheese and turkey tips?
Update: At 7:15 the grilled cheese showed up, 7:20 the steak tips, 7:25 the turkey tips. Â Other than the grilled cheese - which was yummy - the rest was barely ok. Â Lets just say unless you are planning on throwing a few pints back and leisurely waiting for some apps dont bother. Â Although, I will give merit to the manager who finally came out of the ktichen to apologize to many of the guests, including us, offering comps and gift cards where necessary. Â FOr an established restaurant this shouldnt happen. Â We were told that a new menu was released (on Memorial day?) and that they were short staffed. Â Whatever. Â Pull it together people, the Cask is coming to town and if the competition is better........then...........you know......
I'm an old school brewpub fan who fondly remembers the Commonwealth Brewery, still frequents Doyle's in Jamaica Plain, and treasures the taste of real British ales on tap. We've come to the British Beer Company for years at several locations and over time have tried almost everything on the menu in the hope of finding that one dish that makes the whole experience worthwhile. We're still looking for that meal: For now this place is best for beer and "safe" appetizers and nothing more.
Our most recent visit occurred on a quiet Thursday night. The single-size pizza has shrunk over the years so that it now barely covers the inner ring of the Union Jack dinner plate. My "buffalo chicken pizza" had a morsel of chicken per slice, a two-inch border surrounding the cheese, and a bland chewy (Walmart?) crust. Overpriced at $11.99.
My spouse had blackened fish with mango salsa and vegetables. Uh oh. The fish was dried, charred, and flavorless, and the salsa was sugary and completely lacking any visible pieces of mango but for two the size of nail clippings. Day-boiled carrots completed the tableau.
My son ordered a chicken quesadilla appetizer, no onions please. Well guess what it was loaded with. Thankfully it was a matter of taste rather than allergy, but it was still pretty surprising.
Our server was nice but she seemed to be the only one working the room. It took 20 minutes to get our beer order and 35 to get our meal.
Yet we will return. It is the nearest place to buy a pint of Fuller's ESB, London Pride, or Porter, though they persist in serving the glasses at two degrees above freezing. (We usually wait ten minutes, warming the glasses with our hands to get them up to a proper temp.) They also have Dogfish Head on tap as well as other craft brewers so we will continue to support this establishment -- but only the bar, not the kitchen.
First off, my boyfriend's from Swindon, England, his mom is from Edinburgh, Scotland. Â This is THE furthest thing from authentic as you can get.
Service: Eh...she did what she had to, following the script. Â Felt like we were bothering her on a Saturday afternoon.
Ambiance: OK...nothing earthshattering...although the guitar and Norton bike were nice eye candy.
Food: Â Sucked...need I say more? Â The BF had pastrami with BBC fries. Â The pastrami tasted like it had gone bad the day before and he got about 7 fries on his plate. Â I had the Rueben. Â Tasty but very little meat. Â Had mine with onion rings which were overcooked and greasy and you could tell that the oil they used was old. Â Very few items on the menu were actually "British" and the ones that were, were their "versions". Â
The BIG kicker and the reason we will never return is that the "British" Beer Company did not have Belhaven. Â It was on the menu, granted, but not available. Â SAY WHAT?!!!!
At the BBC the drinks can be kind of pricey but you get a nice craft beer (I'm all set with paying $5 for a Bud Light) The Bartenders are very personable, attentive and knowledgeable about beer. I really enjoy the food, particularly the Onion Ale Soup ($6) The live entertainment (No cover) usually consists of Acoustic duo's or trio's covering classic standards and 90's rock and the lively atmosphere makes this bar more than "a place to have a beer and hang your head."
Review Source:This is my 2nd time coming here & really wanted to see if they would actually have British Bar food here since the last time I didn't see anything other that Fish & Chips on the menu.
Well  I am glad I cam back as that all changed
They have Bangers & Mash, Shepard's Pie, Short Ribs, Guinness Steak pie
& my favorite Sticky Toffee Pudding.
Full bar with over 50 different kinds of Beers too.
I wish I could have tried everything. The waitress was good, but the hostesses were useless. all they did was stare at us & were talking among themselves.
They usually have a band playing on the weekends for some live entertaiment.
The royal pupu platter was great, I especially loved the bourbon wings. Good selection of beer, although I was a bit disapointed they only had one Mayflower, which was the IPA and I'm not big on IPAs. Other than that I enjoyed myself at the BBC and wouldn't mind checking out the live music some night.
Review Source:I have been coming to the BBC for a few years now. Their beer list is extensive and the atmosphere is old time pub, which I really enjoy.
Now, the service every time I have gone has been unusually slow. Slow table greet, slow drink times, just slow everything. What's been keeping me coming back is their FANTASTIC Reuben sandwich (there cape cod Reuben is killer as well), and that beer list of course.
A few nights ago, my family and I decided to grab some dinner. BBC was not our first choice but in the end it was something we all agreed on. On a Tuesday night at 7 pm our party of four was sat right away. The host, a young highschool aged girl I woud say, brought us into the quiet and almost deserted dining room to a nice corner table. She kind of plunked the menus down and walked away without saying anything. My father moved the extra chair so my brother (who is in a wheelchair) could join us at the table. Ugh.
As we perused the menu, conversing and enjoying our time together, I noted how many servers walked by in the dining room before we got a table greet. I counted 3. About 6 minutes after we sat, our young female server grabbed our drink order. We got them shortly after and I placed an appetizer order of baked brie. Honestly, one of the best things i have ever eaten. For dinner, I ordered my reuben  with sweet potato fries and a side of blue cheese dressing for dipping. My parents had cape cod reubens with BBC fries and my brother had a burger. When the food came out, my blue cheese dressing was missing, and i think my family counted 8 tiny fries on each of their plates. Whatever.
My sandwich, as well as everyone elses at the table, was delicious. However my sweet potato fries were extremely skinny, and the blue cheese (when I finally got it) was AWFUL! I don't know ... it was warm, and tased like the cheap generic stuff you get at stop and shop. NOT what i remember.
After waiting about 10 minutes, our next round of beers showed up, but alas, they weren't the right beers...Sigh.
Overall, the experience really wasn't that great. A manager was no where to be seen in the joint, and to be honest I have never had a manager come over and ask how my food or experience was, and that even happens at places like the 99!. Pretty all set with the BBC.
Just a short update. Â Food has been consistently good since earlier this year. I do go during slower time so maybe the dinner rush is different. Â Had a party of 6 for lunch a month back, don't think one person had a complaint about the food. Â Went there yesterday. Brie, chili, bangers & mash, & flat-iron steak between the two of us. Â All of it was very tasty. Â As a previous yelper did mention during their visit, chips with the chili were stale. Â Service was ok, but we were the only ones in the dining area so not much competition.
Review Source:Still diggin' the BBC. A local chain that has GREAT burgers/wings, and AMAZING beer selection, and as-close-as-it-gets to a traditional British Pub.
The only downside is the dining room gets crowded, and they seem to have too many people or to few working. But then again, Pembroke is a strange place... Example: the 4th of July was packed.... Packed? Who wants to sit inside on a summer day when you could be outside watching fire works, sitting on a beach, or having a barbecue??
This place is good but would not be my go-to place, it's very dark inside at the bar area. Â Actually, a girl was using her Iphone as a flashlight to read her menu. Â Regardless of all that, the menu was extensive, the beer selection is obviously huge so if that suits you, it's a great place to go. Â I'm a wine drinker but at a place like BBC, I will order beer. Â We have gone here in the past, but we always sit outside, which we prefer. Â It is only April though and not condusive to sitting outside just yet. Â My fish taco's were excellent and light, and my DH got steak tips which were very tender - check out the pictures I attached. Â For a Sunday night, the place was packed. Â Who knew that Sunday was a key night to go out! Â Oh ya ladies, the bartender was serious eye candy - definitely a 10+!!
Review Source:I love the BBC in Pembroke. The staff is terrific and I love visiting on Tuesday nights to play trivia. It is also 2 for 1 pizza night. My family and I always sit in the bar side so we can be waited on by Terri. She is the friendliest waitress with the biggest smile. She never leaves your drink empty and is prompt and and sweet. I love this location and I love the company. I have visited most of them but i love calling this one home.
They all have entertainment so heading out on a weekend looking for something to do always means the BBc will accommodate you.
BBC is ok. Their food isn't super consistent and the service is for the most part crappy. Waiting for a hostess when theres no one there and she emerges 5 min later and doesn't apologize for probably chatting on her cell phone in the back? Not cool.
The wait staff here isn't friendly and always seem bothered. Well, I guess if I worked there I'd be a bit unhappy too, but still. Its your job not mine.
Fish and chips is all I really get here and lately it hasn't been that good. I'd only come here if every other place had a wait and even then, I may just go get a take out pizza from the local pizza joint.
Let me say first that I have been to the BBC in Walpole a bajillion times and have never had a problem. We love it there. We have had birthday dinners and other events and have never had a problem. It was my husband's favorite. Â
We were getting married in Hanson, Ma so when it came time to choose a restaurant for the rehearsal dinner we decided to got o the BBC in Pembroke even though we had never been there. I know odd choice maybe for a rehearsal but hey we're not fancy.  BIG MISTAKE. I made the reservation months in advance for 8pm. When I spoke to the girl on the phone she assured me that it would not be a problem at all. The majority of our party showed up around 7:45 and  went to the bar to get a drink while we waited. 8 rolled around, 8:15 rolled around when we asked what was up with our table we were told that the party that there was a party still seated where we were going to be and they were still eating......ok......we weren't even seated until almost 9PM. A few people had to leave like my flower girl and her parents because you really can't keep a 4 year old entertained in a restaurant lobby for too long.
As if that wasn't enough, the way they had set up the tables was seriously ridiculous. This location is smaller than the Walpole one. We all had our backs to each other and we were literally touching chair backs so we rearranged the tables into a non idiotic formation. My husband asked to talk to the manager and she told him that they would send out some free apps....ok ....they sent out 1 pupu platter. for 25 people. ONE. The drinks took forever the food took even longer and they screwed up the orders.  The waiters just came out and started screaming the food items. I know that is a lot of people but it's also a gigantic tip and they were acting extremely annoyed by us ordering food. At a restaurant. yeah.
Then a band started setting up directly in front of our tables. Literally in front of me. Like I could reach out and grab a snare drum. We had older people and some kids with us so this was going to be bad........we asked for the manager and no one could find her....we talked to someone and they told us the band wouldn't start playing until we left. OK great...and then they started their sound check....they held off playing for a while and I know it's not their fault because it was well after 10pm at this point but we were all sitting there with speakers blasting in our faces. The manager vanished apparently into thin air.
All this the night before my wedding :(
Nobody even apologized. SERIOUSLY! We were just told it "wasn't their fault" the people in front of us were still eating. But you know what? it was. They clearly got their food right before we got there at 7:45. Â Who books parties that close together?
Basically it really sucked. A lot. It was really stressful and embarrassing for me and my husband. We still couldn't talk to a manager and when we've called later on no one calls us back. If they weren't equipped to handle the large crowd I really wish they would have told me that in the first place. I has assumed it would be the same set up as the Walpole one.
My husband and I both work with the public- him in retail and me in service so we are both extremely easy going and polite to waiters or anyone in the service industry because we know dealing with people all day can be hard but jeezum crow those were honestly some of the rudest people I have ever encountered. How can you be mean to a girl the day before her wedding? PURE EVIL! Â Sad to say we won't even go to the Walpole one anymore because I'll probably have flash backs and start crying.
As a purveyor of pub grub and beer I have seen my share of poor attempts of "authentic" pub food. Â Fortunately, the BBC has come to the rescue. Â Never too crowded (except on St. Patrick's Day) with plenty of beer choices and hearty food, the BBC is a great place for groups or a casual dinner experience. Â The sandwiches are huge and the sweet potato fries are divine. Â This location is right on the Hanover/Pembroke line in a small shopping plaza. Â There is plenty of parking and a nice outdoor patio area. Â There's not much of a view from the patio, but it offers plenty of shady seating to enjoy a nice, cold brew. Â True to the BBC chain, they host trivia during the week and live music entertainment on the weekend.
Review Source:I've been here a bunch of times with people from work, and we've NEVER had a problem with the service- we must have lucked out!
Speaking of co-workers, we had a little contest going last year to see which place on the south shore had the best pizza. While this place did not win, it was a close contender- a bit greasy, but love the thin crust and toppings selections.
I am iffy on my experience here.
Our waitress was very slow. Bf and I met two other people here and it took her a good 10-15 to get over to us. And the bar itself was packed, but the tables near the bar where we were seated were almost empty.
I ordered Pumpkinhead drafts (5.25 apiece - pretty steep for Pembroke) but they did have the cinnamon/sugar on the rim of the glass--MMMMM! (I know they do this a lot of places but I still LOVE it!)
I also had a "Gourmet Grilled Cheese" - Gruyere and a second cheese (forget), apples & mango chutney on a multi-grain panini. Sounds a little strange but the flavors complemented each other WONDERFULLY!
I'll probably go back because I liked the atmosphere & food... here's to hoping the service improves.
The one and only amazing thing about the British Beer Company was my Chicken Broccoli and Ziti pizza that I ordered. Â Delicious, delectable, and enough for me to take home and eat for lunch the next day without breaking the bank. Â Unfortunately, it only went downhill from there.
I came to this restaurant with a large group of people. Â When doing this, I understand that service can get somewhat delayed and that the personal nature of the waiter/waitress can be lost. Â Unfortunately this does not account for the disappearance of our waitress for extended periods of time and her quick and ineffective run throughs when she was there. Â Took me forever to get her attention to simply wrap up my food. . . of which I had to call after her when she began to run away from the table.
We were seated at the outdoor patio, which was nice for a while until it started to get a bit chilly. Â An outdoor space warmer was in sight, but why would they turn it on? Â Nah, just watch the girls at our table pull their hands into their sweatshirts and shiver away. Â Lastly, the staff was very UN-helpful when it came to sitting our group. Â A handful of us went in search of our own chairs to sit, its as if the waitress turned a blind eye to our needs.
The only reason this place got 3 stars instead of 2 was due to my mouthwatering pizza dish. Â Would have had much better service if we served ourselves. Â Won't be returning here as it is not worth my time.
I've enjoyed my few trips to this BBC. If you stick to the basic pub food you can't go wrong. They do burgers and pizza well. My biggest gripe is the cost of a beer. It's about $6 for a Guinness, and I paid $5.20 for the Leinenkugel drafts. That seems a little steep for a bar in Pembroke. The service was friendly, and was on top of things. They also had an acoustic band on Sundays from 4-7 for some great cover free entertainment.
Review Source:The beer selection is pretty decent, including mixed beers such as Snakebite, Black Velvet, and Black and Tans. The food was a resounding "meh". The cover band that they had in the night that I went was alright. They had a few songs that they did well, and quite a few that made me wonder how they got in the door. The drinks are the best reason to go there.
p.s. almost forgot to mention the slow uptake on the service.
The only reason this place is getting two stars is because they have very tasty pasty pies, although they have very Americanized fillings. (My favorite is the chicken and leek.) Otherwise, most of the other items I have tried are not very good. They serve a decent burger and they have a nice range of beers. Although the food is not really their problem in my opinion. It is the service.
Service is a nudge over "eh.." I find most of the waitstaff's attitude and service quality to be "what is the least amount I can do to appear like I care when I really don't". I find they would rather gather around the bar to chat with each other than act like professionals who are getting paid to work. The last time I was there, they ran out of the usual crust for the pasty pies (which is really the highlight of this meal) and substituted with a bread-like crust (similar to a calzone). Was never informed of this when I ordered so was very disappointed. That should be worth another star knockdown but I'm feeling a little generous today.
I loved their Baked Brie Appetizer!
My friend ordered it and it was a big appetizer! Yummy !
I tried Chicken & Leek Pasty for the lunch and was super good!
Chicken was so soft and the gravy inside of pie was so good.
I do not like most of gravy i eat out but this was great!
If you ever go around this area... or driving by, stop in for meal!
