We drove up at 1:45 on a Saturday. At first we couldn't understand why all of the empty tables were dirty and the waitress was ignoring us. She eventually acknowledged us but said the were closing at 2 so the only thing we could get was a hot dog. WTF?
So I can't comment on the food but their attitude leaves a lot to be desired. We won't be back.
We continued on and ate at Johnson's which was awesome. They welcomed us in even though they were putting out the "closed" sign as we drove up. Now that's how you run a business!
This place is a real throw back! Â I really didn't know what to expect when I came here, but I just love the name of the place! Â I was in town on business and needed to stop for a quick (and cheap) bite to eat afterwards. Â I went to Yelp, read the other review posted and thought I'd take a chance. Â I'm glad I did!
When we drove into the parking lot we were a little skeptical, but the lot was full of cars, so always a good sign! Â It's a tiny place and every table was taken as was every stool at the counter. Â It's not fancy - at all, but the food the waitresses were bringing to the tables looked & smelled really good!
We only had to wait about five minutes for a table, but in that time they ran out of a couple items. Â My partner had the chicken salad sandwich ($3.20) and an order of fries ($1.50). Â She's very particular about chicken salad and rated it as #2 of her all time favorites - wow! Â I had the 2 piece broasted chicken dinner ($6.50) which came with 2 sides of my choice from a pretty good list of choices. Â When I ordered they were just starting to make more chicken, but it was a brief wait and well worth it. Â It was perfectly cooked, crunchy, not greasy at all, and very juicy. Â The mashed potatoes were sooo homemade and the salad was way bigger than I thought it would be. Â I ended up taking a piece of chicken home and some of the taters.
What I really liked about this place, aside from the food being really good, was the choice on the menu and the super low prices. Â Where can you get a sandwich for $3.20?? Â The pimento cheese sandwich is only $2.00! Â There's a slew of sandwiches in that price range. Â Now these aren't giant sandwiches like you'd get somewhere and pay 6 or 7 dollars for. Â These are just made on regular loaf bread, not sub rolls and that's fine. Â It was still stuffed with chicken salad which you can see in the picture how big the sandwich was.
The staff was real friendly and the place is laid back and full of locals just shootin' the breeze. Â They have a separate take out door and it was busy the whole time we were there.
If I didn't live all the way in Durham I'd definitely put this on my list of places to visit once or twice a month.
