Buckhorn Cafe

Was staying in Mauston for a baseball tournament and found the Buckhorn on Yelp.  Upon arriving we were seated right away.  The restaurant was quite full and the bar was hopping.  Our waitress came over right away and took our drink orders.  We also put in a couple of appetizers, onion rings and cheese curds, both were good.  The main courses were a mixed bag.  I had a NY strip, which you order by the ounce, I did 16oz. and it was very good!  My wife had the pulled pork and it was dry and not very good.  The rest of the food was fair to good.  The food prep times are on the long side, but they have a sign on the table notifying diners that the food can take 30 minutes to an hour.  All in all I was happy with the Buckhorn and would recommend it to anyone in the area.  For the location, and considering the lack of options this place is pretty decent..

We have gone here 2 years in a row on a family vacation.  The first year, the service was slow, but almost acceptable and the food was good.  The second year we sat on the patio near a large group and was completely ignored for about 1 hour.  No menus, nothing.  We had 2 small children who were hungry and the waitresses were dealing with the larger group outside but ignored us.  We finally decided to leave and the man who was outside yelled after us to wait, they would give us free drinks and I said, I don't need a drink I need to feed my children.  We left.  Not going to try it again this year unless my kids are ready for a LONG wait. This place was recommended as an area favorite but I cannot imagine most people would want to put up with that.

We travel often and are always in search of mom and pop places to eat. We found it here!  Great food, clean and great service.  We will be back and we will spread the news!
