The menu is interesting but it doesn't deliver on expectations. The walleye cakes were moslty bread and seasoning. The clam chowder was very thin but had flavor. On my salad, I didn't realize the lettuce was chargrilled and not the chicken. Who wants a hot lettuce salad? And the "house made caesar dressing" was the same spicy chile garlic sauce on the walleye cakes, not even close to Caesar dressing. My husband said the prime rib and au jus were good, but the rice was definitely from a box as it was mushy and super salty.

The Buglin' Bull looked like one of the more happening restaurants in Custer and was recommended by the clerks at our hotel, so we figured it would be worth a stop in for dinner one recent evening. When I looked up the menu online, I was attracted by their impressive beer list and varied menu which includes your standard offerings of burgers, sandwiches, etc. as well as some Mexican dishes and meat dishes.

We were seated immediately upon stopping in and ordered a couple of local beers. They also have a beer called 1874 Black Hills Gold which I believe is brewed specially for them. I was getting a little tired of the old usual burger and fries thing, so I ordered a Mexican dish which was pretty good. A burrito filled with grilled chicken and served with rice and beans on the side.

Service was attentive and friendly and everything was very reasonably priced, especially considering the humongous portions here. The Buglin' Bull is a sure bet in Custer for an interesting lunch or dinner.

Ernie is a great bartender and the staff is always very pleasant.  The food is pretty good too.

Terrible food. Ok service. Not my sort of crowd. Meh.

Started out poorly and went downhill to downright bad.  I gave one star only because Yelp would not accept the review zero stars, which I tried to do.

The restaurant management definitely doesn't depend on repeat business in this tourist town, but they need to remember that there are review sites too.

Hostess tried to seat us at the worst table in the restaurant or bar -- a tall table in the bar, right in front of the door.  There were numerous other tables and booths available so we asked to be moved and she complied fairly graciously.

Drinks:  Our server didn't know what a Cape Cod was.  He did bring the drinks out within a few minutes, but never came back to ask if we wanted another, or to refill our waters.

Food Quality:  I ordered soup and salad -- the chicken and rice soup was just OK, but not quite hot enough.  Salad was greens out of a bag.  My husband had the buffalo burger which he said was OK and it tasted just like beef.  It came with french fries -- all 10 of them.

Food service:  30 minutes after ordering with no food in sight, we asked the hostess to send over the manager.  A few minutes later he arrived, just at the same time the food did.  He gave apologies, and didn't charge for the burger.  We were ready to pay for our drinks and leave but there weren't many choices in town that were open on a Sunday evening.

I can't think of anything else -- except that a table next to us asked for the manager too, and he never bothered to come.  It appeared that everyone's food was a long time coming out.

My husband and I stopped in our first night in Custer.  He had the quesadilla and I had the burrito.  Both were great.  Also tried the micro brews and very impressed.  Waiter was ok, but overall a great experience.

While on vacation, hubs and I stopped in here to check the place out.  We sat in the upper loft area of the bar which gave us a nice view minus the noise of the bar.  Our waitress was friendly and gave us great service.  I ordered the evening special which was 8 oz. filet wrapped in bacon and served with 12 butterflied shrimp (small, but still good) which came with your choice of potatoe, baby carrots and a salad!!   All for $18.99.  Not horrible considering its "season" for those in the Black Hills area, but after Sturgis rally.  Hubs ordered a giant burger which he said was pretty good.  We each had a beer (Armstrong Ale) which is brewed just for this place.  Nice!  All in all... we had a good visit.

Wow, what a disappointment, from start to finish! We had a reservation, showed up on time, they didn't ask for my name and had us wait for them to set the table for us! Other parties that came after us were served and seated before us. We were a party of 6, 2 of our party got their soup before we even had our drinks (which we waited half an hour for.) the salads arrived much later and the white Zinfandel was Luke warm from sitting around for so long on the bar!  3 of us ordered the trout almandine, one of them came with slivered almonds and the other 2 did not, they were dry and not even hot, the steak was ordered  medium rare and was delivered medium! For the prices I feel they are over their heads, the value just isn't there. No one offered any kind of  apology for the slow service or  poor quality and it is a good job no one cared enough to ask us how our experience was on the way our as we had spent $175.00's and did not received what we paid for! Perhaps a well timed call to Gordon Ramsey is in order particularly if this is the norm!!!!

There have got to be bette places than this.  We spent the night in Custer and our hotel (Super 8) gave us 10% off here.  So we took our 2 kids and were there on a Sunday evening.  Not too many people were there at all.  I had the elk burger with sweet potato tots and my wife had the Indian taco.  Our kids had what looked to be some boxed Mac n cheese.  The Indian taco was ok I guess. No sour cream and I thought it lacked flavor.  My burger had good flavor, wasn't dry but wasn't very filling.  The tots just were not good.  How do you mess up tots?  The beers were good, waitress was very friendly, prices were average but didn't meet the quality of the food.

We decided to try this place out despite the mediocre ratings and we ended up having a very good experience. The staff was very friendly and the food was pretty good. I ordered the Salmon Sandwich and I was definitely satisfied.

We were stopping over in custer on a road trip... this seemed like the liveliest spot with good food tho more expensive than expected. Great burgers, nice service. An easy recommendation for a fun dinner in Custer. Definitely save room for dessert for their ginormous cakes. Yum!

Also looked like a fun spot for locals - lots of people watching the thousands of TVs and variety of games .... fun spot.

Full disclosure, this was my only experience at the Bull, but it was not grabbed by the horns by our wait staff.

First impression, arriving about 5 min early for our reservation as we were sat at our table we were asked to be sure not to take too long to eat because they had another large party behind us in an hour. It was ironic they said that because of how long we ended up waiting for our food.

There was a good variety of choice on the menu. Sandwiches or lighter fare were not served after 5pm which is understandable. The entrees proved to be overpriced for the quality.

This may be a better lunch place but I won't risk trying it out. The decor inside was great, some original brick and stone walls. We were in the dining room. Their sports bar side looked more appealing and this may be where their focus is on customers.

Our service was slow and sloppy. Drinks were refilled only when requested. The worst was the wait. We a party of 9, larger but should have manageable especially since we did have a reservation, waited for an hour and 15 min before the food arrived. As expected it ranged from cold to warm at best.

The salmon was ordered by one of our party and when the food finally did come, the waitress had put in the trout. She offered to make her something else, so she chose a chicken salad because it was quick.

It arrived quickly but was a simple iceberg with canned chicken, and fruit.

The part that floored me was that she was charged for the salad. No comp for the mistake or even a discount. We didn't want to push the issue but rather just wanted to get out of there.

My buffalo tenderloin was cooked as ordered, medium rare, which I was pleased after having others overcooked, but it was cold. In addition, the disappointment continued because the entree was the most expensive on the menu at $24. If it had been good or even arrived warm in less than an hour... I would have been fine with the price.

Two had butternut squash ravioli which was tough and dry.

I suspect that our order was cooked and forgotten, sitting back there cooling. The tough part was that our waitress wasn't around much for us to try to catch. I think she had a section in the sports bar side.

Unfortunately we waited another 15 min to get our check too.
They clearly need to work on their customer service.

The only reason we went here was because the Sage Creek Grille was closed on Sundays. It has a reputation as the best in town.

Maybe try it for lunch, the sandwich options looked decent, or if you are  looking for a fun bar but steer clear for dinner, until they get their act together.

This restaurant is on the Main street of Custer.  It was a Monday night, late for a small town and not tourist season so take that into consideration.  We sat in the restaurant rather than the bar and were one of two tables.
The service was great...in fact our waitress was from Haverhill, MA which was a kick.
I had the ribs which were good and my daughter had the Walleye.  Only complaint would be there were some small bones in the Walleye but it is hard to clean freshwater fish.
If you are in the area ..try this.
