Visited once a few years back when I was in town seeing family, and recently used them to cater a mid-sized party (80-100). Food was exceptional, service during the event was very polite, prices were reasonable, and - at least when you were dealing with Bull or the other boss - the staff were friendly and competent. (If you got anyone else on the phone, though, heaven help you...)
Review Source:Brisket was very tough, could barely cut it with a knife, and normally brisket will pull apart with you fingers or a fork. It was also extremely fatty. We also ordered a pork chop dinner and we got three slices of a pork roast, which were also tough and flavorless. We did enjoy the beans and the Mac and cheese was okay. The waitress was nice, and the food was out in less than 5 minutes. I hate to write such a bad review , but we drove 45 minutes to get there and were completely disappointed. Needless to say, we will not be going back!
Review Source:Hi, I'm Courtney and I'm a Kankakee lifer. Yes, it's true. I've tried to escape many a times..still trying to get out, but I'm almost 30 and i've been unsuccessful up to this point so I'll just accept my destiny. With being a lifer, I've been fortunate enough to watch our county grow and change over the last few years. The more that our town grows the more restaurant options are added. I remember the good ol' days when to visit any decent restaurant, you'd have to visit Orland, but now? Well, safe to say we're moving up in the world. We now have a Panera, a Texas Roadhouse and an Olive Garden. But I'm not that into that stuff. I'm not the kinda girl that you'll find waiting outside of Olive Garden for 2 hours opening week..come on now. What makes me the most proud of our town is the fantastic local/small business options that we have that are good enough to be found in Chicago (or in Bulls case, North Carolina.)
Bulls BBQ is all that and more for me. We read previous reviews so we were prepared for crappy service and had pretty low expectations. That wasn't our experience whatsoever. Our waitress was really nice and explained the menu to us (since I'm pretty sure I stuck out like a sore thumb. What kinda girl wears a white and navy dress to a barbeque restaurant? THIS GIRL.)
Now for the best part, the food. I swore I almost heard angels sing-- so heavenly. We ordered the cheeseburger balls for an appetizer and I ordered the brisket philly cheese sandwich. This is the kinda thing that I order at most restaurants but nothing has blown me out of the water the way that Bulls did. The meat was so tender and juicy. (I begged my husband to bring me back for dinner the next night, but he knows how I get obsessed with certain foods then never eat them again and he definitely didn't want that to happen. This is the reason I'll never eat Wendy's spicy chicken nuggets again.) My husband ordered the Carolina pulled pork which had the most luscious coleslaw on it that I've ever had. It's not made with mayo like traditional coleslaw, instead it uses vinegar. Sounds kinda strange but actually Bulls executed perfectly. If my husband were to write a Yelp review, he said (and I quote) it was so good, it didn't even NEED barbeque sauce.
In my search for Bulls, I noticed it's near impossible to find prices on locally owned restaurants in Kankakee. Whassup with that? A girl has to know what she's getting into the Thursday before payday or else the card might decline! Here's a little help though: our bill was $26.50 + tip which included 2 sodas, an appetizer and 2 sandwiches. Overall, we thought the prices were pretty fair in comparison to the quality and quantity of the food we got.
I think it's safe to say i kinda have a crush on Bull now...
Money quote: Authentic place, with upbeat staff and great food that will give you a formidable belly.
For Kankakee, this is as good as it gets. Â And I'm sure several items could hold their own against the best in Chicago.
Had some wings last night, half of them Lemon Pepper, half "Hot". Â The "hot" (scare quotes intended) were about as tame as you can imagine a "hot" ever being. Â Go "five alarm" if you want noticeable heat. Â But to be sure, the flavor was good. Â The Lemon Pepper on the other hand -wow. Â I was shocked when I bit into real live marinaded in lemon chicken with tons of peppercorn ground on top. Â Very Interesting, to say the least. Â I'd even say it was an intellectual experience! Â I'll definitely order them again, and I'll hold off on calling them the outstanding until then. Â For now, I'll just recommend them for anyone who wants something out of the ordinary.
And that's part of this review: they change their menu often and even things like their ranch dressing is changed. Â It was a tangy Range for a while, but all of the sudden got less tangy, more buttermilk-y, and better. Â Sign of a good place, I'd think.
My other favorite dish is the (don't let the name put you off) BBQ Sundae. Â It's one of those dishes that's hard to stop ordering even when you want to range around and order different things from a place. Â It's that good.
My wife praised the salad, even though it was iceberg lettuce, and particularly light leafs at that. Â She also loves the buffalo chicken sandwich.
Fries are steak-fries size, and I wouldn't call them good, but I'm hard to please on fries. Â Others think they're good, but probably not great. Â Can't tell if they're frozen. Â I think the chicken strips are frozen, though, so stay away.
Wanted to try the Bread pudding for dessert, but forgot to order it...
Prices seem fair, if not great.
Pros: Â
~several inventive dishes,
~cool staff,
~I'll disagree with other reviewers and call the physical location a benefit, although
~with the addition of salads on the menu, you can now have a healthy option
Cons:
~You're going to smell like fried BBQ until you're next shower, even if you're just picking it up. Â ... On second thought, is this a con? Â
~some dishes are too salty (fried pickles, i'm looking at you),
~not feeling quite as fat afterward would be nice.
Seriously some good BBQ. Â I had the pulled pork sandwich. Â It was flavorful, smokey and tender. Â The bun was fabulously fresh! Â The cole slaw was nice, as it was in a light dressing and crunchy. Â My husband had the brisket and he thought it was ridiculously wonderful. Â Next time I'm in the area, I'll eat here!
Review Source:Awesome food and awesome people who own it, we love it! The only thing I can say is that the location really stinks. My husband won't let me drive there after certain hours. Sometimes the employees are a little rude, and we never eat there in the summer (just order out) because it's HOT HOT HOT. However, if you want some really awesome food, I highly recommend. It's fantastic and well priced.
Review Source:The place is a bit of a dump, and I got my food waaaay after the other folks I was with. Â There was also a weird dude just sort of lingering by the counter.
That being said, the food was fantastic. Â Healthy? Â Good Lord, no. Â Not even close. Â Indeed, I have never felt guiltier after a meal.
But sometimes, every once in a while, you deserve to feel guilty. Â You know? Â
Now I cannot pass Kankakee on the interstate without getting a pang in the pit of my stomach just drawing me back in. Â It's like the barbecue version of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart."
I CONFESS!! I LOVE THEIR FOOD AND WANT TO EAT IT AGAIN!!
We had the rib tips and I was shocked that they were so good. I've had them at other places before and not been very happy. Â You know, very fatty and not much substance. I would have liked to of had the brisket, but unfortunately for me they were out. I will definitely be going back to try the brisket.
Review Source:Very good BBQ. We tried a couple of slabs of ribs - one baby back and one St Louis style. We actually liked the St Louis style better. The BBQ flavor was very good.
A few of the sides we had: fries - they were not very good. The cole slaw was terrible - not edible. The baked beans were good.
The staff was friendly although we did have an issue with the bill.
The place was clean.
