The four season room really sells it for me... Obviously if you're familiar with Delaware, you're familiar with Bun's. It's always been a great family place. But with two bars and a way to enjoy the summer breeze, I think Bun's is becoming a reasonable go-to spot for the limited Dtown nightlife as well. Plus any place with Guinness on tap is alright by me.
Some of the previous reviews have been somewhat lackluster, and perhaps that was true at the time. But in my experience Bun's is only getting better. The menu is clean, simple and full of favorites. If you're looking for a full-fledged night out, then you're probably not looking to be in Delaware. Then again, if you're in Delaware anyway I'd be willing to give it another go or three.
We have been meaning to try this piece of Americana (est. 1864) for years and finally did Friday night. Good food at a reasonable price. The service was fine. Attentive but not overly so. My wife had the eggplant parm and I had the BBQ meatloaf.more than we could eat. My one gripe was the $8 price tag on a small glass of wine. Seemed high for the local.  Then again it seems like every Resturant  in the greater Columbus area things they are in midtown NY based on their drink priced.
Review Source:Ever since my husband and I moved to Delaware we were told that Buns is the place to go and to try their chocolate cake. So we went and we tried.
It has the unique ability to cater to a variety of clientele. When we dine, the main dining room tends to be more family oriented with plenty of moms, dads and children. Being married and children-less AND wanting to enjoy their newly renovated four seasons room/patio we opt to sit outside and enjoy our beers. It has the best outdoor dining experience in all of Delaware.
The food is another blend of home cooking. The mousaka, meatloaf, and open-faced hot turkey entrees are by far my favorites. Good old comfort food. Beyond dinner, it's just a great place to go, relax, and have a drink out on the patio.
I received a $20 gift card from my insurance agent for getting a friend to get insurance through him only to waste my time in a restaurant that I can only hope catches fire again. The employees here are rude and it's obvious most don't want to be there. The food is also nothing to ride home about since it lacks proper seasoning. Buns is just another downtown restaurant that is begging to go out of business like the rest.
Review Source:Eh. Nothing I would go back for. The salad was out of a bag, as was the dressing and my chicken marsala was so buttery you can almost feel your arteries closing. When I commented about this to the waitress she noted that their motto is "forget the calories... you're eating at Bun's!" Normally, I'd be happy to forget the calories for something decadent and yummy- ya know- something that was worth 1000+ calories. But this was not what I wanted to waste a splurge night on.
Everything was incredibly mediocre. There is nothing special, no pizzazz, no... nothing. It was just your typical, middle America, diner without the fun.
I gave this place 2 stars because our waitress was really nice and I have to say the bread was delicious. Also the drinks were reasonably priced. But still, overall a meal for 2 people was about $40 and it's not that that's a lot of money, I can just say this meal was not worth $40.
I was very sad because being I've heard so much about this place and how historic it is, I wanted to love it. Very unfortunate.
I'd really like to give this place a 3.5, it's not quite a 4, but certainly not as sad as some of the reviews. Â We had a very pleasant experience. Â The place is a nice small town restaurant with a nice full bar. Â They start you off with some amazing homemade, warm mini bread loaves. Â Really good. Â While, the menu is not overly imaginative, there is a nice variety. I had the ham loaf (how often do you find that on a menu?), which was pretty good. Â The garlic mashed potatoes were really good and the potato cheddar soup was excellent (but could have been a tad hotter). Â My mom had a salad (mixed greens, not just iceberg) and the tilapia special that she really liked. Â Again, nothing fancy, but much better than any old chain restaurant.
Review Source:Let me first start by saying I love the environment at Buns. Â it's a wonderful old place with a nice new patio. Â Local ownership. Â It's been around for decades. Â And they have a really yummy fudge cake. Â But the love stops there. Â I have yet to have anything on their menu that was above average. Â I keep returning, in hopes of finding something, anything off the regular menu that really tastes good. Â Today, I tried the stir fry. Â It was awful and the absolute worst thing I've ever had there. Â You had to search to find any rice in it. Â And there was so much watery, tasteless sauce on it that the dish resembled a soup, not a stir fry. Â We didn't want to create a fuss so we sent it back barely touched and told the waitress they really shouldn't serve that dish as a stir fry. Â We ended paying $9 for a dish of it. Â That's al lot for something you can't eat. Â Manager didn't apologize and neither did the waitress. Â And because it was too gross to eat, I was starving and had to go somewhere else to get some edible food. Â But hey, the patio is nice.
Review Source:We ate outside but kind of inside on a perfect day in August which was really neat. They have a outdoor bar/eating area that is part of the building but all the 'garage doors' were up so we got fresh air minus direct sunlight. Location is great for a place in Delaware and the place is clean as what you want expect from any family restaurant.
The menu wasn't anything special. Same type of menu you would see at any local family restaurant or Bob Evans type place with the exception that they have a full bar. I ordered a loaded baked potato with my meal and was slightly disappointed when it wasn't very 'loaded' and the cheese was not creamy more like dried and crusted on. Still tasted fine but nothing I would order again or come back to eat. Â The salads looked delicious I wish I would have opted for one.
Service was friendly, fast and efficient. Everything went flawlessly as you would expect.
If the menu would have been larger and more updated I probably would have given it four stars. I mean the place was cute and the people are friendly but when you go out to eat you aren't you going out for the food?
When I saw Bun's I jumped and squealed and clapped my hands. I really thought it was going to be one of those awesome small town place that's known for a certain dish. I was wrong.
We went on a Sunday evening and there weren't alot of people there. We were the youngest customers but the wait staff was younger than us.
The menu was a let down and not as big as I hoped it would be. It has the kind of items on it that appeal to their clientele: pot roast, salads, chicken dishes, ham loaf and some pasta.
They brought out huge soft dinner rolls with garlic and regular butter, which I enjoyed.I opted for the meatloaf that came with 2 sides so I ordered fries and apple sauce. Â The applesauce was chunky so it seemed homemade, but it was really sweet, like so sweet I had 2 bites and decided all fruit content was negated by the amount of added sugar.
The meat loaf was ok and it was covered in barbecue sauce that could have been store bought. My boyfriend had a generous serving of pot roast with mashed potatoes and a salad.
Given the other restaurant/bar offerings in the area, I'm not sure that I'd come back to bun's , just because it wasn't remarkable.
More like 2 1/2 star rating.
There's a special place in my heart for Buns mostly being that it was the first place I went to meet the hubby's parents after we started dating.
Buns is nothing spectacular, AMAZING, or out of this world. It's as the Yelp rating system states, "A-OK" I can eat here, but it's nothing you can't get at any other sit down hamburger Restaurant that's not a fast food chain.
The appetizers are a bit disappointing. GFS all the way, from frozen to just plain sad.
I did notice a lot of older clientele here when we came in on a Friday afternoon, so perhaps it IS the old biddys that are keeping what remains of Bun's alive, and perhaps they have a crush on that chubby boy in red pants that's plastered all over the walls. I wish I knew the story behind that. Creepy.
I had the first item on their menu, "The Bun Burger", which was a typical bacon cheese burger with a side of crinkle cut fries. (I'm sure that the slight mention of crinkle fries just made some old person salivate. What's with old people and crinkle fries?!)
The burger was good, and I will commend that the bacon was cooked to perfection, but honestly, that's all I can say about it.
Dessert was... disappointing and another case of prepackaged and pre-prepped disaster, or else it was just plain old. The cake was a bit stale, crumbly and resembled a Frisch's hot fudge cake's step child.
After all of this, I would do lunch here, but just skip the appetizers, and dessert, and you should be ok.
The decor is actually decent. They light fixtures, and tables fit the building, and the place is clean. This place isn't a filthy pig stein, and is pleasant to come in to on a hot day, and it's not too bright, which makes it nice for intimate occasions.
By all means, stop if you are hungry, but don't expect anything classy, or above five star as far as the food goes.
The food here is still garbage. It will appeal to people who have never had authentic food, and those too lazy to learn how to cook.
No restaurant should employ cooks who have no clue how to determine the difference between rare and medium-well food.
This place is a travesty and once its blue-haired customers pass to the next reality, it will vanish (hopefully)
Not what it used to be. A while back this place was burnt to the ground (long story) and since it reopened, it has not been the same.
The food is not the greatest. The salads are the way to go, but even then McDonald's has some better salads. Overall the dishes are not what they advertise them to be.
If you are looking for some nastalgia, then this the place. They have large pictures from around the town on the walls. But if you are looking for good food, I'd look elsewhere.
A long-time Delaware landmark, this place is a must-see if you're traveling through Columbus or just looking for a nice, unique place to enjoy a great meal. Â I had never heard of it before until my mother, vacationing from Alabama, told me about it after having read about Buns in a magazine. Â I was amazed to learn that this place has such a cult following and apparently has quite a reputation. Â From what I hear, this is the second 'cycle' of Buns having been destroyed by fire several years back and although I never had the pre-fire Bun's experience, I really enjoy the food and atmosphere. Â They treated my mother like a queen when they found out she was from out of state. Â
The wait is terribly long if you go during peak times but if you call ahead of time they do honor your reservations and whisk you away when you walk in. Â We had an excellent brunch and now I am ready to go experience the dinner menu. :)
