Decided to stop here on the drive back from Key West to Miami. Â Saw the good reviews on Yelp...and this place didn't disappoint.
I had the cobb salad for dinner with grilled chicken. Â The salad is huge and fresh, and the chicken cooked just right. Â For an appetizer I had the lobster bisque. Â I highly recommend it. Â It is a tomato cream base, but it had plenty of chunks of lobster in it.
My boyfriend had the caesar salad and chipotle wings. Â The salad was again, very large and fresh. Â Wings were great, cooked well, and the sauce was awesome.
We sat at the bar, so service was great. Â We were there at an off hour (around 3-4pm) so it wasnt very crowded. Â Everyone was friendly, the bar manager even stopped over to ask us how everything was.
A great stop on the drive up or down to Key West. Â Pretty waterfront and very laid back with good prices.
I ate here on a Saturday night based on the Yelp reviews. Â We arrived around 6:30 pm and there were several tables available, but it was packed by 7 pm. Â They had a large group of 30 come in and they sat inside. Â I am SO glad I read the reviews and that we visited this restaurant. Â It was a great overall experience. Â Very local feeling, nice atmosphere and fantastic service. Â Our server, Dan, was wonderful. Â He was very friendly, gave great recommendations and offered to take photos of my boyfriend and me out by the water which was very sweet of him.
We enjoyed the appetizer sampler (beautiful presentation, large shrimp and probably the best smoked fish dip I've ever had), the hogfish entrees, the lobster bisque (which tasted a lot more like tomato bisque), the conch chowder (very hearty), delish pina coladas and the coconut cake and the turtle pie. Â They really tout the coconut cake, which is made by a local woman, but I prefered the turtle pie which is made by the same woman. Â
It had just rained so the tiki bar wasn't opened, but they opened up their outdoor seating right next to the water as we were wrapping up dinner. Â I imagaine it would be really nice to sit out there and to have drinks at the tiki bar, but you're very close to the water if you sit in the Florida room area and there's a nice bar in there as well.
I'd definitely return, refer friends/family and I'd ask for Dan! :-)
I am a local and I have been here a few times and the food is always great but the services sucks. Had lunch today with a girlfriend and it took 15 minutes for a waitress get our drink order. Then she had our drinks got our lunch order. Then another person brought our food. It took her 20 minutes to finally see if everything was ok and brought us the bill.
Review Source:This is a staple of Key Largo, call ahead for dock space for your boat and a table if you got a large group, load up the crew and cruise over there. Your in the Keys, so please eat seafood when your there, all the food is delicious- especially the key lime pie. Then were you all primed from cocktails and food, hop on the boat kick back and take a nap...
Review Source:My friend and I stopped here for lunch on our way out of the Keys. We got seated out on the back patio, which had a great view of the cove. We each got a drink: a strawberry daiquiri for me and a buzzard rum punch for her. It was a little strong for her tastes. I had the grilled Mahi fish tacos, which were delicious. My friend got the fried catch of the day basket and said it was also good. For dessert, we both got the key lime pie.
The staff was very good. Our waiter brought us waters as we were finishing our drinks before we even asked.
All i can say is wow!! From the outside of this resteraunt you wouldn't think when you sit down and order you would be eating such an amazing meal. There was 4 people in our party and everybody loved every bit of there food. I had the shrimp scampi..wasn't expecting to love this dish so much. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and taste was amazing. My husband got the coconut shrimp n said it was the best he ever had. My father-in-law got snapper covered in black and blue sauce..he couldt stop raving about it.service is great as well. My husband and I will be going back to dinner there before our vacation is over and any future trips to key largo.
Review Source:Stopped by on the way out of the Florida Keys. Â Located on the edge of a marina off the highway, the place was really nice. Â We were seated in this semi-outdoors place that had screens around it. Â There was a nice, cool breeze that went through the place that felt really nice. Â Our waiter was really nice, he told us that all the artwork in the place was done by his father.
The conch fritters were good with large pieces of conch in them. Â I had the fried seafood platter that was very nice and tasty. Â The fish was delicious. Â The lobster reuben was also very good. Â We also had some type of fish blackened, which was also very tasty. Â Overall, the seafood, as described by a member of my group, was the best he had during the entire trip to Florida. Â We tried the coconut cake, which was made by a local baker at the recommendation of our waiter. Â The sauce was very good, the cake itself was a small slice and wasn't that amazing as purported.
Overall, a very nice place with very delicious food.
Good dinner. Â Everything was excellent except the fish sandwich was suppose to have Jerk seasoning and came out just grilled. Â It was still very good and fresh. Â The yellowtail ceviche & conch fritters apps are a good choices to start and the reviews on the coconut shrimp outstanding. Â Waitress was fantastic with us and the kids.
Review Source:I'll echo other reviewers... The lobster Reuben is to die for! Â Loaded with lobster and a tangy sauce. Â Conch special was out of this world - tender with a wonderful light citrusy beurre blanc sauce. Â Sit outside and watch the boats come and go. Â It was fantastic -started our keys experience off right!
Review Source:Delicious Pina Coladas. The wife and I each had 2. Not your typical machine mixed garbage, either. These are hand-mixed and fabulous.
Conch fritters were very good. They had large chunks of conch. 5 in an order. The remoulade with them was good. These are NOT the seafood-flavored hush puppies that you find elsewhere.
The wife had a lobster reuben with coleslaw and loved it. It tasted fresh and the bread stayed nice and fresh throughout the meal, not soggy despite the lobster, thousand island, and sauerkraut
I had a mahi sandwich, blackened, with fries. Very fresh, but the waitress was new. Wish she would have mentioned that hogfish was available as fresh catch, too..
We sat by the water and service was leisurely, but responsive. Great experience!!!
Overall, spent $85 for 4 pina coladas, 2 sandwiches, appetizer, and tip, and felt it was worth every penny.
Buzzards is slightly off the beaten path and has a great variety of food. I highly recommend The Lobster Ruben Sandwich and the Oysters. Two of my kids had the Quesadillas and loved them. You could expect slower service if you sit outside next to the marina. Buzzards is the last decent restaurant in key largo, if you're going north.
Review Source:Adorable little spot, the service here is incredible - 5 star hands down. Â The lobster bisque is very tasty (I had to try Florida lobster, haha), the water view over the sunset if you arrive for an early dinner is amazing, and I look forward to come back sometime to try their basket of fish!
Review Source:Thanks, fellow Yelpers! Â We read yoiur reviews and decided to head for the Buzzard's Roost!
Fun our of the way place (lucky we had a navigation system in our cellphone!) with a "locals" atmosphere and friendly people. Â Server Mabel made our evening more fun than ever! Â
Very good food and a good Keys experience!
I have been here over ten times driving from Miami, and finally got around to giving this one of my rare five star ratings. Every time I come they never fail. What makes me love this place and drive an hour to eat here? Mainly because they have the freshest seafood always cooked to perfection by their kitchen while you sit by the water's edge sipping on cold beers. I never knew heaven could be so cheap too!
When they have it, the hogfish served buzzards style is the best! The place is down a side street so its mainly filled with locals, and a little hard to find. Go there if you like good eating in a laid back atmosphere.
Had the hogfish and Dan was great at suggesting how to prepare it - lightly blackened. So yummy! My son had mahi mahi and loved it too. We were there right before the wind got nuts from Hurricane Isaac so we had a nice breeze sitting in the screened in area. Creme brulee was especially good - wish I hadn't been so stuffed from the good food but my son finished it off for me :-) Â I saw some got banana nut bread but we didn't - maybe they were out? Â Oh - and don't miss out on the conch chowder. Best I tasted during my week in the Keys.
Review Source:This place is AWSOME!!!! I went there for a quick bite to eat on our way from key west and I was pleasantly surprised by the food of course and the fabulous view! The service was also great! I definitely recommend the fish tacos blackened it was superb! Go here if your hungry and want good food at a reasonable price. The Hog Fish was also superb!!! My family and I left safisfied both wallet wise and belliesfull.:)
Review Source:Excellent, here's why:
* Free and warm banana nut bread to sample and rate as a database-building incentive, it was delish nonetheless.
* Fresh, jerk Mahi basket with looong-cut slaw (fave fave slaw-style) for $12 bucks was three generous chunks of Dolphin.
* The bacon is robust, large-cut, and prepared fabulously. Mmmmmm, bacon.
* Cool interior design with wooden lodge-style ceiling and a very bored fireplace, atypical for the Keys.
* Sweet history (since 1959) as a former drug-running nexus and Indian-historical angle.
* The proprietor is also an artist, and his artwork is very Keys-thematic and driven by his experiences and the history of his establishment (Dan Lawler).
* On the water.
* Great and friendly service.
* Pink Lemonade and they put a carafe on the table (water too). Efficient. Â
Cabeza, OUT! Vote Kevin Madok for Monroe County Clerk of Courts.
On our ride from Miami to Key West, we stopped here for a lunch break. Â The smiling service, and ice cold water were welcome to a couple of jostled folks like us. Â (The Miami Airport is a cluster!)
Anyhoo- We had super cold water, and surprisingly large menus at hand. Â I got the chicken salad wrap, and he got jerk chicken quesadilla. Â Neither of us had one bad thing to say about the food. Â My salad was cold, fresh, crisp, and had a great flavor - lots of grapes, nuts, and a touch of curry...MMM! Â
Refills came right on time, and the place was clean clean clean! Â
Thanks for the warm welcome to the Keys!
I have had a family member living in the Keys for close to the past ten years so I have had a chance to sample a lot of the dining establishments during my visits. Suffice it to say there are a lot of places that are to be avoided, tourist traps, if you will. The Buzzard's Roost on the other hand is a must stop whenever I go to the Key's. It is popular with the locals and plenty of tourists have found it as well. It is off the highway, hidden in a residential neighborhood along the water.
The food is always good here. They have a variety of seafood and bistro fare. I usually get a hogfish sandwich. Try it, you won't be disappointed. One other thing I like about the Buzzard's Roost is that they have some old time bistro appetizers that you seldom see anymore, like Potato Skins, Escargot, Baked Brie and Fried Onion Mound. The conch fritters are good as are the crab cakes. The only so-so item i have had here is the Key Lime pie. It's good but it isn' the authentic Key's Fern Butters recipe.
This place has plenty of "Parrot-Head" charm. Â Outside seating on the water with an open ocean view under a covered lanai. Â What more could you want? Â Sent my Bahamaian rum conch chowder back. Â It had an off-flavor. Â Don't know what caused it, but didn't want to take a chance with it. Â My server Anne was excellent. Â She gladly replaced it with their famous lobster bisque, which was a real winner!
This place is off the beaten path, but definitely worth the time.
Conch chowder stars...Tom 2, Bill 1
Our group was travelling back from 4 fun days in the Keys, when we decided to stop for lunch. Since we have a veggie-eaten person, i found this place, which has a decent veggie menu.
The place is right off Route 1, but you need to watch for it, as you can easily miss it. When entering the place, it resembles a bar area, but it has outdoor seating next to great view of the ocean.
Everyone ordered margaritas and mojitos, I stuck with local beer. For the appetizers, we ordered potato skins (veggie guy loved it). seafood basket and clams. Must say, i dont prefer clams, but the ones made here were awesome. Seafood basket contains fried shrimp, calamari, fish, mussels and mahi-mahi (dolphin). Â For the main course, i ordered catch of the day, Yellowtail longsnapper fried with potato balls and tartar sauce.
Food is good, little of the expensive side. 18% gratituity is always added for groups above 5 ppl.
all in all, decent place to visit, good for kids, as you have lots of outdoor space for them to run around, while you catch a meal.
Buzzards was lots of fun. The food is good. The service is friendly.
Eat outside- Â and enjoy the beautiful view of the river. Great place for families or to get drinks. Really nice atmosphere- the quintessential Key location.
They had Hogfish as the specialty the day we went and my Uncle about died. He loved it. Â My Mother ordered the scallops and got a really nice serving of large scallops. I had the special with a salad and fish & chips. It was delicious. Everything was just the way it should've been. Consistent. I'd definitely go back.
I got a deal from Travelzoo that included snorkeling and dinner at this place. I wouldn't have necessarily gone there otherwise, but I'm very glad I did. The generous coupon allowed us to sample a LOT of the different food.
For appetizers, my boyfriend and I had the Yellowtail Snapper Ceviche which was delicious as well as the cracked conch. It was nice to see conch in some form other than fritters. For drinks we got the Fuzzy Buzzard (not bad, typical mixed drink) and the Smashed Buzzard (very good, especially with the blue curacao).
Then came time for dinner. We had a little issue with dinner in that the manager originally would not let us use our food voucher for lobster. Eventually he did, but be warned that if you are using a food voucher from Travelzoo like we did, you may run into the same problem.
My boyfriend had the hogfish which was very good and had a very unique taste as far as fish goes. I had the Lobster Francáise which was a creamier way to prepare lobster, but was still very delicious.
For desert, our voucher didn't give us much choice - we had to have the key lime pie. It was just "okay". I'm not really a desert person, though, and I'm not a huge fan of key lime, so I won't take off any points for it. Other people may think it's better.
Overall - the food was fantastic and throughout all of this, our server Mary was awesome. The manager was very accommodating, especially during our voucher confusion. We ate more food than we would have normally with the voucher, but it was all very VERY good.
Some friends and I were on a day trip to Key Largo when hunger struck and my iphone app listed Buzzard's Roost as one of the restaurants nearby. We decided to give it a go and in doing so, discovered a real gem of a place!
It was indeed hard to find as it is not directly off of any main roads but if you pay close attention to the signs, you should get there just fine.
All of us were very impressed with our first experience at Buzzard's Roost. We sat at the outside tables near the docks and took in the beautiful ambiance. The service was honestly spectacular. Our waitress' name was Amanda and she definitely went above and beyond to make sure that everything about our lunch was to our complete satisfaction.
As if the scenic ambiance and fantastic service weren't enough, the food and drinks at this place were phenomenal! My friends ordered the Bloody Buzzard (Bloody Mary) and I ordered the frozen margarita. All of the drinks were really tasty and had just the right amount of alcohol. Then came the delicious food. I am not a big fan of lobster but the lobster bisque that my friends ordered was so good that I ended up sharing it with them. All of the food was so good that we all shared samples of our orders with each other and there was not a single thing on the table that every single one of us did not absolutely love. The Angus burger was to die for and the chicken salad wrap was mouth-watering kind of good! The Mahi tacos were so fresh and just as delicious. Other favorites include the french fries and the crab cakes.
We loved our first Buzzard's experience so much that we drove from Miami to Key Largo again two weeks later specifically to enjoy Buzzard's Roost once again. We brought some other friends along during our second trip and requested for Amanda to be our server again. Once again, everything was fantastic and the new friends we had brought with us became instant fans of the place as well.
It's not the cheapest place to eat in Key Largo (average of about $9-30 per plate depending of course on what you order) but the quality of the food is worth every penny and the excellent service that goes with it is just icing on the cake!
If you are looking for a great spot to grab some good food and drinks in the Key Largo area, I highly, highly recommend Buzzard's Roost and their incredible waitress, Amanda! Â :) Â
P.S. This place is also great for animal lovers since lots of people bring their dogs with them to enjoy the outside patio area of Buzzard's.
The location is a bit hard to find as it is off the beaten roadway. Â Find it and you will be rewarded with fresh, tasty food. Â The menu and the interiors are "Keys-y", but in a good way.
I had the fish basket because the waiter described it as being like their Tuesday night fish fry. Â I haven't been to a fish fry in a long time, so fish basket it is! Â The fish was plentiful, hot and freshly fried. Â It was delicious, served with fries and two of the tastiest hush puppies I ever had. Â
Good thing I liked it, because I almost ordered the Chicken Piccata, as another in our party did, and it looked awesome. Â I may go back just to order that.
Others had the fish tacos, a fish sandwich, fried calamari, and conch chowder. Â All gave excellent reviews.
If you're in Key Largo, skip the touristy places and find the Buzzard's Roost!
At first I wasn't too sure of the Buzzards Roost. I felt the service needed to lighten up a bit, when I asked the Waitress if I could have 1 Mahi Taco and 1 Tuna Taco instead of 2 of the same, she flately said "NO", like I was an idiot or something. No apology or anything. I don't know, maybe that's how things are in the Keys, but I was taken aback.
Things improved as the dinner wore on, the Tacos were quite good and fairly priced, and the waitress warmed up, asking about the things my dad and I were doing in the Keys. She even warned us about the heavy enforcement of speeding on the main highway. Sure enough, going back to the mainland we saw some jerk who had been tailgating us get waved over the minute he raced pass us in a passing lane. I should have left a bigger tip!
Half the fun of The Buzzard's Roost is finding it. Get your GPS, explorer hat, a divining rod- anything to help you find this hidden restaurant.
The menu is your typical Keys fare- I had the dolphin sandwich with potato salad (next time i'd opt out of the taters). My meal was solid and we had a great time.
I was in the keys to do some snorkeling  and stopped in for a light meal with my husband before heading in the water.  The attendant at a nearby dive shop directed us to the Buzzard's Roost and we were not disappointed.  The restaurant is tucked away a few blocks off Overseas Highway  and has a nice dining area outside with a water view, next to what seems to be a small marina.
The food was well made and the service was fast and friendly.  The menu  offers all the goodies you expect in the keys and the prices are very reasonable. Because we were about to go swimming, we didn't have a whole lot of food, but the two dishes we tried (yellowtail ceviche and fish basket w/ homemade potato chips) were fresh and well-prepared. I would definitely go back.
