I think Caffeine was being renovated or something. Â We sat outside in the Tiki bar. Â Our server was a little sarcastic and borderline rude at first but got better as the night went on. Â As for the restaurant, the beer selection and atmosphere were great. Â There was live music the night we went and they were great! Â I had shrimp tacos, my husband had the lettuce wraps and a friend had one of their salads (not sure which one) and they were all delicious!
Although our server was annoying, I don't hold that against the restaurant. Â I will definitely go back next time I'm in Ormond.
My experiences with Caffeine have varied wildly, but I don't know whether that's the fault of the patrons or the restaurant. Â Maybe both, since the place does cater to a certain type of crowd.
My first visit there was a definite treat. Â I had never been and so all the wonderful wall art was a great surprise - I am a huge SHAG fan, and there are some fantastic pieces here. Â We showed up for a late lunch on a Saturday and the place was pretty dead. Â We might have been the only two customers in there. Â We split a wild mushroom pizza with bleu cheese and a balsamic drizzle that was absolutely fantastic. Â I walked away with a good feeling about the place, especially after seeing the enormous tiki bar out back AND the Attack of the 50ft Woman mural on the wall behind it.
Visit #2 was with my partner and his brothers. Â We stopped by maybe around 9 o'clock on a Thursday evening and the place was packed wall to wall with that sort of ...I don't know? Â Early to mid 20s meat market crowd, I guess? Â Very noisy and claustrophobic. Â We got a table and waited about 20 minutes for our drinks. Â We drank them, paid and promptly left. Â Not our scene at all. Â We could not get out of there fast enough.
The third time, just last week, was another quiet, late weekend lunch. Â They don't open until 3 o'clock, so we were pretty hungry by the time they unlocked their doors. My companion got the pork shumai, I got a salad and we split a delicious loaf of fresh made bread and accompanying dipping oil. Â The salad was, eh. Â Well. Â It was a salad. Â Nothing special. Â The dumplings, however, were very good - fresh, flavorful and quite sizable as well. Â There was another couple dining at the same time as us, and so again, the place was more or less empty. Â But not for long. Â A crowd of about 10 drunken bicyclists crowded in through the door and cozied up to the bar. Â I hate to be that person who sounds like the 90 year old man yelling at the damn kids to get off his front lawn... but they were loud and crude and obnoxious and it actually ruined our lunch - which up til that time had been rather pleasant and relaxing. Â Turns out they do bar crawls on some sort of schedule and we just happened in on the wrong afternoon. Â I'm no genius but that doesn't seem like a super great idea - bicycling around mid-day, under the hot Florida summer sun, to a series of bars wherein you proceed to refuel with...alcohol?
But like I said, what do I know? Â Anyway, we left soon after. Â If we - or you! - plan on dining at Caffeine mid day on the weekend, and you'd prefer a more low-key lunch, I am thinking a call ahead of time to the establishment might be in order. Â I think the bars on the bicycling circuit might actually be sponsors of the thing (the cyclists were wearing tee shirts with sponsors on them) so perhaps the sponsors might have some sort of schedule. Â Worth a shot, I suppose.
To sum up - excellent atmosphere (when you're there at the right time, i.e. not the weekend evenings or during a drunken bar crawl), fabulous artwork, a varied and delicious menu. Â Definitely worth a visit at least once. Â I've not yet enjoyed a cocktail at the tiki bar outside, but I plan to soon...I'll just remember to call ahead!
