So far I have a mixed opinion of this place. Â It is good enough to warrant a return, so this review will be updated.
Pros: nice atmosphere - good taco selection, all tasty as many as I have tried - reasonable price if you stick with tacos
Cons: not very attentive service - EXTREMELY SLOW delivery of food - no free chips - the free crisp things are nasty -
...did I mention slow?...
I am hopeful the service will improve and kitchen will speed up - will keep you posted...
I would really LOVE to give this place more stars. Â I eat here almost every time I come into town because the food is soo good most the time and a great value.
Their are some issues though. They seem unable to leave something off what you order even if the wait person says they will so you are out of luck if you are allergic to something and it comes on the item you want to try. Â One visit a family with little kids waited over an hour only to not be served and finally leave. On another we did not get chips and salsa till after half the party finished eating even though they were ordered because the food was taking so long. The bar tender is great but the wait staff need more training or a better system or something.
Most of the time the food is worth the wait. With proper training of the wait staff I think this could be an excellent place.
Stopped in after a day of hiking. The margaritas were made in house from fresh ingredients, the salsa was out I this world with fresh cilantro, onions and heat just up to the edge of comfort, splash it down with the margarita, heaven! We ordered a variety of tacos, all were scrumptious, wrapped in house made tortillas. Â Highly recommend the cactus taco, can't go wrong with any of them. Plus, can't be the prices. Â Anytime you're heading through Mt Vernon, stop by, you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:I like Calle. I love the idea of bringing new, family-owned businesses into downtown Mount Vernon. For a once dying area, Calle is a bright spot.
All of the food I've had there was fine. Some things were REALLY good. I love the pollo blanco tacos, definitely one of the yummiest taco experiences I've had. I also loved the flavor of the strawberry shrimp tacos, but they were really, really hot when they were served to me. I think it might be the type of shrimp used that causes that.
Service has been acceptable every time. The first time we went, the server wasn't impressive. We sat at the bar and were the only customers in the restaurant. I kept having to ask for necessities like napkins, water, a fork...just basic things. The server jokingly called me needy, and I'm okay with a joke at my expense, and would have laughed about it if it weren't such basic needs!
I have not seen that server again, though, so hopefully that was a "we hired her when we opened, didn't work out later" type of situation.
The margaritas taste awesome, but they're not very strong and have SO much ice that you drink them in two sips.
The happy hour seems awesome, though, I need to make it on in time. They also are doing an awesome job keeping up with customers on Facebook.
I don't know what place some of the previous reviewers went to or perhaps after being open for awhile the good folks at Calle have got things dialed in because our experience was exceptional.
One word... fresco! Simple authentic dishes prepared with the freshest ingredients.  House made corn tortillas and chips, exceptional guacamole and pico de gallo kick starts your meal... and, yes, they do charge you for the chips and salsa but... so what? If you're looking for  free chips and salsa, go to one of the other mediocre Mexican restaurants in town. If you want a taste of authenticity and goodness... go to Calle.
Try any of the tacos but if you want some heat, the Pollo Habanero is muy caliente... and full of flavor. The Chili Verde is not on the menu but ask for it... tender pork and an amazing green sauce with just the right amount of heat.
And then... there's the tequila bar! Excellent selection of premium tequilas served by staff that seem to know their Anejo from a Reposado and will guide you through their excellent selection. Â Do a flight... generous pours and a great way to sample several tequilas while saving a few pesos. As to the margaritas... muy bueno! Made with fresh lime juice and agave syrup... no pre-mixed overly sweetened green mix here. Try the spicy margarita if you want something different.
There are so many Mexican restaurant choices in our area but until now, I have been so underwhelmed and disappointed with all of them. Calle... you have gained a true fan who can't wait to visit you again. Gracias!
I'm not sure why I'm still relying on Yelp! When Yelp! filters more than half of its reviews, what good is it? This one will probably make it through, since it's a below average review.
Anyway, I've been to Calle twice.
First, take cash. If you pay with a credit card, the servers leverage smartphones with wifi 'swipers' and when it comes time to leave a tip, you have 3 options - 15%, 20% and 25%. Period. No other choices to write in 17.5%, 21%, etc. So, unless you are in love with limited tipping choices, you're going to want to use cash.
Second, you're going to get nickle and dimed. Order a Happy Hour Quesadilla ($4) and add meat ($1) and the bill comes back at $7.50, not $5. Pico de Gallo? $4 for a small bowl. So, nearly evey little 'extra' is just that - extra. Chips and salsa aren't complimentary - you have to order them.
Third, a lot of the negative reviews about the margaritas are accurate - the flavors are good, but it's much more ice than it is liquor. You aren't going to get lit at Calle drinking margaritas.
I will give them this - the street tacos are authentic. One tortilla, meat, cilantro, onions and lime. Exactly what I was expecting, and it was great. For $2 during Happy Hour, you can't go wrong with the street tacos.
So, if you can get by drinking water and eating street tacos, this is definitely the place to be. Just bring cash.
Note: Always check Yelp's 'Filtered Reviews.' One of the businesses I reviewed has a 1-star rating with only 1 review, but there are 5 'filtered' (hidden) reviews averaging 4.8 stars!
Awesome little place. Â Cheap simple food and friendly staff.
Stumbled onto Calle by accident after spending the day in Mt. Vernon for a Softball tournament. Â There was 10 of us in the party and the staff was very accommodating and happy to see us. Â
Cheap Happy hour grub. Â I had the $3 Tecate's and $2 Â Street style taco's, Carne Asada and carnitas. Â Meat, onion, cilantro. Â simple but good.
We will defiantly go back
This restaurant is classy and upscale. The tequila menu is extensive and the owner and staff will answer any questions you have. I have been there twice and have always had good friendly service. I ordered guacamole the last time I was there and it was very good, and the right sized portion, nothing went to waste and it was reasonably price!
Review Source:Calle has succeeded in breaking the mold of the traditional mexican dining experience by bringing the flavor and feel of a tequila bar combined with a modern take on the menu from street tacos to Chile Relleno. Â The tequilas are served in champagne flutes - there's not a shot glass in the place, which tells you that you're in for a great dining adventure.
The appetizer menu is perfect for an afternoon stop while in town, or just walking the downtown streets. Â An assortment of six different street tacos to pick or combine, and did I mention the corn tortillas are handmade every day? Â Lunch and dinner bring lots more options, and I'm making my way through the menu. Â From pozole to tortas and complete dinner options, they've got it covered.
I recommend the tequila flight - a sampling of three of their finest tequilas, all with large samples and VERY knowledgable "Tequila Ambassadors" to explain more than you ever wanted to know about the fine art of tequila tasting!
My favorite is the Spicy Mango Margarita - infused premium tequila and mango puree made from fresh magos every day (they make it at the bar, so you know it's fresh!), and even a small amount of fresh jalapeno muddled in the glass. Â Don't worry, they're happy to make it to your liking as far as spiciness.
The variety of tequilas in this restaurant is beyond anything I've ever seen. Â Beautiful bottles of preium tequilas line the back of the bar like a piece of art. Â The Tequila Ambassadors will go through them one by one explaining their history and flavor. Â And you wouldn't believe how different they all taste!
We've been in a few times now, and meet new people every time we're there. Â All the staff are pleasant and sincere. Â We always sit at the bar to be in the middle of the action, and find it very comfortable. Â There's always people in there, which tells me this great little corner of Mexico will be around for a long time!
This place is new and they are still learning and adjusting. They are very open to suggestions.
There are many good Mexican restaurants in this area and that is why Calle is unique, they have some of the standards, but they have a lot of unique items that you wont find at other places. My favorite to date are some of the tacos.  Everything tastes very fresh and just plain yummy!  There are several excellent reviews and they all got filtered- whats up with that?  They are definitly worth a try and  judge for yourself.
Calle garnered a LOT of attention with the mayoral controversy earlier this year.  Billing itself as a modern, hip tequila/taco bar, the hype for this little joint was through the roof.  Mount Vernon has a LOT of Mexican restaurants, so there is a  competitive market for good Mexican food - especially downtown, where it's Pub heaven. Â
With all of the excitement, my wife and I went with high expectations. Â Having visited La Casita on 10th, we knew the owners of Calle are related to the owners of La Casita - score one! Â
Seated at a small table in the middle of the restaurant, it's a good 15-20 min. before we are approached again for drinks. Â Even for a Saturday night, it's not that busy. Â Oh well, we don't mind waiting. Â It's date night!
Another 10 min. after placing our drink orders, we receive the margs. Â Not bad! Â More ice than drink, and in a small tumbler - which was a little disappointing for a $8 drink. Â Relative value, that's two pints over at the PoHo or a really good Scotch at Trumpeter. Â Again, oh well - no biggie. Â
I order the Carne Asada - can't go wrong with steak, right? Â The wife decides to go with an appetizer - billed as cheesy bread smothered with red sauce. Â Red sauce on the side, please! Â
20. min later, we received our meals. Â Carne Asada came with a tablespoon of guac., some beans, rice and three small corn tortillas. Â No knife to cut the piece of meat, which was a bit dry. Â Being critical because this dish was $14. Â Not terrible, but something I could have found at a Roach Coach for $5. Â
My wife's appetizer/meal came with red sauce on (again, not the end of the worl - but really?) and was literally a roll, lightly dusted with cheese and red sauce. Â
Overall, I was disappointed in Calle. Â When other established and delicious Mexican restaurants are within a 5 min. drive, you gotta do something to make me come back. Â After tipping out for two drinks, an appetizer and one entree, we walked out $50 lighter. Â Â
Service was not rude, but inattentive and mediocre. Â Seemed evident our gal didn't really want to be at work. Â
Again, the experience here was not necessarily bad, just overpriced and underwhelming. Â Don't see going back anytime soon.
I heard this was a great new Mexican restaurant in town featuring good tequila and a traditional Mexican menu and feel. Â "Great" is not how I would describe any bit of my experience. Â With reservations, it took 20 minutes to be seated. Â The waitress could not tell me what beers were available without walking back and forth to the bar three times. Â The margaritas tasted great, but were filled to the brim with ice... gone after *3 sips*... and cost eight dollars. Â This describes EVERY margarita at our table, not a one-time variance. Â There was no water brought to our table for the first 20 minutes. Â After 25 minutes at the table we inquired about maybe getting some chips and salsa to munch on. Â There were no chips and salsa available, and we were given some sort of "traditional" Mexican food that was a deep fried dough. Â It tasted awful!!! Â After being in the restaurant for well over an hour, our food finally came. Â I was looking forward to some great fish tacos, but for *fourteen dollars* got three tiny tacos that would have cost four dollars at a taco-truck and definitely tasted better. Â The rice and beans were *cold* on every single plate at our table. Â The waitress could not take care of all the bills at once and had to do them individually at the table with each couple, taking more than 10 awkward minutes to do so. Â The wait staff was not responsive to any obvious hints of dissatisfaction throughout the evening. Â Everybody in our party was in utter disbelief at the poor service, terrible value, low quality, and clueless wait staff. Â I will not go back, and will never recommend this place to a friend.
