Used to go once a week to get the Brewhouse steak, was well worth it until the last few trips. The meat quality and size is never consistent anymore, they can't seem to cook it to order, and the service has gone way down hill. Your drinks don't stay filled anymore and you have to practically grab the waitress to get a refill. Â Sad, it was one of the best steaks in town :(
Review Source:Should be called "crappies".
But for the fact that Chuck B. gave a raving review, I would not have stopped. Well, that and the fact that First Burger was closed and this place was right across the street. At any rate, what a disappointment!
There was only one waitress and at first it didn't seem to be a problem as we were the only ones there. After three other parties showed up were were completely ignored. I pushed my empty drink glass to the edge to get her attention, but she didn't come to check on us until well after I had finished my meal and only after we waved her down for the check.
The food. Egad. My burger was not the worst I'd ever had, but certainly not something to write home about. The underside of the bottom bun was saturated in grease and all together the burger was quite flavorless. And guess what they so generously provided? PINK tomatoes. There is no way that this could have been voted "Best Burger in the Universe" as their sandwich board out front declared.
Another person in my party ordered the pulled chicken sandwich which she described as fatty and flavorless. How pulled chicken can be fatty is beyond me. She took it home to the dog.
And the third person ordered their $17 NY steak. I cannot believe that this restaurant would serve such a Shari's quality dish and charge so much. It seriously looked like it was made at Denny's. This wasn't even Applebee's quality. The vegetables that were served alongside the meat had obviously been in a steam table too long and the other side dish was a confetti-looking mixture of purple (potato?) bits, ham or bacon chunks, onions (I think) and some other unknown junk.
And why is everyone up in arms over the building? It was just a regular old building, just like you'd see in any historic district. Weird.
What a cool location. Â The brick interior is awesome. Â
I had the grilled steak salad. Â Bed of romaine topped with steak strips, crispy onion rings, blue cheese crumbles and their own pepperhorseradish dressing. Â It was good. Â The steak was tender, the lettuce crisp and fresh, blue cheese plentiful but not overpowering, and the onion rings were crispy perfection. Â The menu said salads come with rolls and butter and when our server took our order he asked if I wanted the roll and I said yes. Â However, the roll never appeared. Â But I had completely forgotten it was supposed to be there until hours later! Â So overall I didn't miss it. Â No big deal. Â
My other half got the reuben. Â The bread was toasted to crispy heaven and there was lots of cheese that was so gooey and nice. Â He liked it. Â He got a salad with his sandwich instead of fries, trying to be half healthy, but you could also have gotten fries, tater tots, or soup.
It was really good and would love to explore more of their menu soon!
Went here when visiting from Washington and was disappointed from start to finish. From the minute we walked in it smelled musty and I should have suggested we walked out at that moment. Our waitress was friendly however she didn't get our order right. We shared the wedge salad and I would recommend the Greek dressing as the one it comes with is not good and tastes like a blue cheese & thousand island mix. My son had the Reuben minus the bread & dressing due to allergies. The tator tots were crispy and tasty. The sauerkraut was good, but the corned beef was dry and tough. When I make corned beef it falls apart and this was like beef jerky. He even asked for a steak knife and we all know it should just fall apart. I ordered the Greek pizza. The waitress brought a Greek salad......confused as we had the wedge salad, so why would the waitress think I wanted another salad. DO NOT get this pizza as it is on nasty bread and is super dry. The toppings were okay, but the crust and lack of any sauce made it disgusting. After just one bite I sent it back and the manager took it off our bill. However, I was still hungry so we went of and got a takeout pizza from Ciddicis pizza which was good.
Review Source:Came here for lunch and tried the crispy chicken wrap with tater tots and a nitro Obsidian Stout. The wrap was very good and the portion size was way more than I could eat for lunch so I took it home. Â I loved the tater tots; fresh, crunchy, and not greasy. Yummy! My husband had the Reuben with fries and a DIPA from Boneyard. He must have enjoyed everything because his plate was clean and his glass was empty. We both really enjoyed the atmosphere of Cappie's, too. We loved the old brick walls and we had a nice roomy table for two. I hate restaurants that seat you at what pretty much amounts to a small card table or TV tray! I'm thinking we'll have to check Cappie's out for dinner sometime and also check out the bottle shop in the back.
Review Source:I keep coming back for the soup. Cappie's Cheesy Potato Ale Soup is to die for. I loved it anyway and after my server suggested a little bit of the green tabasco, I found that a few drops just really kicked it to another level. That, and the Crispy Chicken Wrap always make a great lunch for me.
Review Source:I can't attest to how great the menu is because I keep ordering the same thing. I love the crispy chicken wrap and the Ale Potato Soup is out of this world. I head there for lunch about twice a month and the first time there the bartender suggested I add just a little of the green tabasco sauce to the soup. I am not a spicy food lover, but added a wee bit. It went from good to great!
Review Source:My husband and I along with our two children went her on a Thursday evening. Â We live in Albany and had never been, mainly because we hadn't heard much about it. Â We will also never go back. Â First, we waited an extremely long time to be seated. Â The couple before us actually gave up and walked across the street where we saw them enter First Burger. Â We should have taken that as a sign. Â Multiple wait staff saw us and even made eye contact with us, but never gave any indication that they'd help us. Â Finally my husband talked to the bartender and told him we needed to be seated. Â The bar tender was rude and said he was busy, another female employee overhead and said she could seat us a minute. Â My husband even informed the bar tender that people are leaving because nobody is seating them and he just shrugged. Â Next we waited for a very long time for someone to take our order, then an even longer time for our food. Â We saw atleast seven wait staff running around and it was only moderately busy. Â The whole process from being seated to finally recieving our meal took an hour and a half, which is just unacceptable in my opinion when the restaurant was only moderately busy. Â My husband had a reuben and I fish & chips, both easy things to make. Â In fact all things on the menu were faster items to prepare. Â While the food was average, we will never return based on service.
Review Source:Friday night and the restaurant is about half full. The service is leisurely. Â Just when you're about to become impatient, someone shows up. Â The people were very nice, just a little too laid back for me
They have some of the brews on the menu. The rest are stored on your waitresses' memory. Â After some discussion I end up with a beer I've never heard of, but really enjoy
The menu (not available at this time online-site under construction) is pretty varied. Â We wanted bread before our meal since we anticipated a long wait. That is not an option, even to purchase. Â Nothing to tide you over.
The entree salad was good. Our chicken dish was good. The sage in the risotto was overpowering. I love sage, but it was way too heavy-handed for me. They should at least warn you on the menu that sage is in the dish so folks that don't like it can look elsewhere.
This is the type of restaurant that can grow on you. After a few visits, you would have a feel for the place and know what to order and to have a snack before you arrive. Â If I lived in the area, it would probably be on my list of places to drop by for a beer and an appetizer.
My entreaties last summer for Caribbean Jerk Chicken anywhere in the mid-valley were answered by Chad the owner/chef at Cappie's Brewhouse who messaged me saying that he had a great recipe. I told him I would coordinate an Albany trip with my brother and let him know when we were coming. Soon after my brother was deployed to the east coast then the Dakotas and Colorado to assess hurricane, hail and flood damage and was gone a couple of months. I'm embarrassed to admit that by the time he returned, I'd spaced off my note to Chad. Mea culpa!
Last week I again circulated a want for Jerk Chicken and Poutine. Chad responded, once again, and told me he not only had one but both!
Today was the day.
Our convivial server, Ron, (who happens to live in a loft apartment above Cappie's overlooking the picturesque Willamette River) brought us a brace of IPAs and an order of Poutine (French Fries and Cheddar Cheese Curds drenched in good Beef Gravy and seasoned with Black Pepper and Oregano), from their bar menu, which was incredible. This dish is insanely popular in the provinces of Montreal and Quebec in Canada, and with good reason. To my knowledge, Cappie's is the first and, so far, only eatery in the mid valley to key in on this great food item.
Then we each ordered a Jerk Chicken Sandwich and a cup of Seafood Bisque Soup. The Soup was tasty, but the Sandwich was a home-run! It's a Jerk (a, hard-to-find, unique blend of Spices of Caribbean origin) Marinated and Grilled Breast Filet served on a chewy Roll with Aioli, Lettuce, Tomato, Fried Plantain Slices and large Strips of Fresh Pineapple. It was unique, in our experience, and wonderful!
Utterly cool as it is, since I've described the venue, in detail, in other reviews, I'll not drag you over those old stones again.
Cappie's never disappoints. Chad puts together a menu that's innovative and cutting-edge. If you haven't been there, allow me to urge you to correct that oversight!
Not even on my top 3.... Service was slow, waitress was unfriendly and had no suggestions as to the menu or even what supposed In house brews went well with our meal. Tried this spinach salad with what they called prawns, more like bay shrimp, and a grapefruit dressing, NOT GOOD AT ALL. THE owner in his chefs coat told the server it was fine and it must be that our pallet was bad. I mean really that is how the owner treats customers. very dissapointed.
Review Source:The sign out sides said, "Voted Best Burger in the Universe." so my wife and I decided to try that burger and see how it rated. We sat down on a Saturday afternoon while a local civil war game was playing and ordered the 1/2 lb burger, made our way with several toppings to choose from. The burger arrived and was great, certainly in the category of "order again." The service was good, attentive and offered suggestions for our order. We also tried a 2 Towns Cider House holiday brew, it was full of crisp apple flavor with a hint of clove. The burger and hard cider were a great pair with a holiday twist.
I truly enjoy Cappies Brew House, it is sometimes one of the stops on Albany's Nosh Tour Chef/Owner Chad always has something good in store.
First of all, I agree that calling this place a "brewhouse" is very misleading as they do not brew any beers. The fiance and I were looking for somewhere different, so we decided on Cappies.
It was very slow for a Friday night, which was actually a good thing because we got to sit at one of their two tables outside. I got a watermelon martini as part of happy hour which was ok, but nothing to get excited about.
Fiance ordered the salmon, I ordered the new york strip steak. We both got soup, both of which were just ok. When the entrees arrives I immediately noticed Mike's salmon was seriously lacking in portion size considering it cost $17. My steak tasted ok, was a little under-seasoned, I liked the hop butter that was melted on top, but really it was just lacking salt and pepper (which was not available on our table). The cooking of my steak was also quite off; I asked for medium rare and the cooking was uneven all throughout. It definitely looked like one side was cooked longer than the other. It was tender, but had a lot of gristle and fat. I'd say I had to trim away/ spit out about 20% of it. But the worst thing was my potatoes that came with the steak: it was supposed to be a "garlic peppered potato hash" which apparently translates to a medley of potatoes (props for using purple potatoes) that have been deep fried, then when they are ordered tossed in some butter so that the customer won't know they were deep fried. Unfortunately, the texture was completely off; they were very dried out. And I didn't taste garlic at all, if anything they had the flavor of butter that had been sitting out a little too long.
Then to top it all off, when we got home my fiance got sick. And there it is there.
I hate to write a bad review, but I think being honest is very important. I think the building and the location is really cool. The waitress was nice and unlike others we did not experience slow service. They also have other things on the menu, sandwiches and such, that I think would match up to the level of culinary talent Cappies is working with. Basically I think if you can't do $15-17 entrees well, you shouldn't do them at all. I imagine if they stuck to just burgers they would be put out by First Burger across the street. Overall I think they need to find a different way to define themselves.
Sorry Cappies, but I just can't give you a 3-star "A-OK" rating based on the overall night.
First of all, when I walk into a place with "Brewhouse" in it's name I expect to find beers that are BREWED in HOUSE. Â At least they carried a big line of Calapooia Brewing Co. craft beers, but this is a little misleading. Â Strike 1.
We ordered the onion rings and they were greasy! Â Wow! Â Not exactly the most flavorful rings ever, either. Â And for $7.00 they could have loaded the plate with more than 10-12 rings. Â I had the bacon cheeseburger and it was actually pretty tasty. Â I asked if it could be prepared medium and the waitress replied yes, however it arrived well done. Â Strike 2. Â It also arrived with luke-warm tots on the side and I had to call the waitress back to ask for ketchup and mustard. Â Strike 3. Â
My wife had the crispy chicken wrap which she said was great, and the waitress did a good job of arranging her order to include fries and soup in the most inexpensive way for us, so minus one strike for that. Â The service was a little slow when it came to getting drinks though.
Total bill for 5 beers, 2 entrees and one side was $49 and change. Â Out the door for $58 with tip. Â So not too bad, but a little steep for a burger and wrap. Â Don't think I'll go to Cappies again when I can just head down the street to Calapooia Brewing Co. for the same beers and tasty burgers at 2/3 of the price.
We stopped late on a Saturday - place was a little empty and the service was a little slow. Â Waitress seemed a little tired - maybe it was how late we were?
It was family friendly.
Fair selection - salads, pizza, burgers & sandwiches. Â Something 4 all. Â There was some meals that were a little lighter.
The Chicken wrap was good - light. Â The burger was awesome - Â heavy, tasty n filling - how a burger should be.
Will b back when I m back in town
Food was decent. Kind of expensive for what I got. I had the BBQ pull pork sandwich and it didn't have much flavor. Expected better for a 10$ sandwich. The service made up for it though. Seem kind of busy but our waitress was on top of it with water, sodas, and even to-go boxes. Didn't seem like we were the one waiting on her, she waited on us. I'll defiantly go back and try some other food.
Review Source:One of my favorite Albany restaurants! Â We've enjoyed everything on the menu, but the chicken flatbread pizza is my favorite. Â Service is good, food is always tasty and the full bar features a great selection of microbrews and wine. Â Great for girl's night out, date night and dinner with the kids.
Review Source:I've been into Cappies twice now and both times the food and drinks were great. Â Last time was a Friday night, it was busy and the service wasn't great. Â The owners were doing a great job trying to help out the servers but the servers seemed a bit scattered. Â Once they work out the kinks it'll definitely be a 5-star!
Review Source:Cappies Cob is amazing! Thank you for inviting this twist on a classic Cobb! The bacon is really good and the avacado fresh. Try it with blue cheese on the side and don't forget to save half for lunch the next day. I couldn't wait past 11:30am to have lunch because all I did was think about it! Cappies Cobb you are my dream come true!
Review Source:Stopped here based on a yelp search as we are in the area for a wedding.  Darn, we had already eaten lunch and were just curious about this place, only had drinks.  Loved the interior with the brickwork, am a sucker for bricks.  The menu looked good a wide variety of choices. We had prompt and attentive service which is always a plus.  Our drinks were very reasonably priced, had a Reisling for $4. a glass.  We may  have to make a trip here tomorrow before the wedding.  The only negative, they say they are a brewhouse, but they don't really "brew," their own beer.
Review Source:Welcome to Albany Cappies!
The food is good in quality, portion, and taste! Â The beer is cold, the environment is friendly, and the menu keeps us coming back to try something new!
Personal favorites so far:
Watching the owner pick fresh herbs from the garden and carry them back to the kitchen...I knew we were in for a treat!
The green bean fries with wasabi dipping sauce are very tasty with a generous portion size! Â The sandwiches featuring corned beef are excellent and the french fries are my favorite in town! Â The quality of the beef in the burgers is top notch...juicy and perfectly seasoned so you can taste the quality beef! Â Reasonable prices, family friendly on one side...beautiful bar on the other side, and great beer selection!
Had the best steak you can get in the corvallis / albany area at this restaurant. Â I met the owner who gave me a very good impression that this place will be around for awhile. Â The food is awesome. Â It's a little hidden gem so check it out! Â Order the green bean fries with wasabi, yumm!
Review Source:I was happy when I looked at the menu and saw a few healthy choices on there-not just bar food. I had a grilled fish sandwich with avocado on flat bread and it was great and I didn't have to feel guilty because it totally worked with my weight watchers plan :) My date had a pasta dish and he loved it. I think they need to work on the atmosphere a bit-no pictures or anything on any walls, but I'm sure they'll get there eventually :)
Review Source:Great new restaurant in downtown Albany.
We loved the fries! They spice them in-house, and are so tasty you don't need any condiments. Â The halibut fish and chips are excellent as well.
Our only complaint is there's no lunch menu! Â We wouldn't mind smaller portions if the price was proportionate, otherwise we will save this place for date nights.
They have put together a thoughtful menu that pairs well with the specialty beers they have on tap. Â The taps are populated mostly with good micros from Ninkasi, Deschutes and Calapooia...but don't worry, they have the standards too.
I have had:
battered and fried green beans with wasabi sauce-pairs with IPA.
Ceasar salad with chicken- all ingredients were fresh and dressing custom made. Â Yummy.
Brewhouse sandwich- this thing is a monster of meat with turkey, bacon, corned beef on toasted sourdough. Â It was way yummy. Â It came with tater tots that were crisp with a special zing of spice on them.
The rest of the table had all sorts of other items off the menu and there was nothing bad said about any of it. Â They had Mahi mahi sandwich, fries, shrimp salad, macs and cheese, hamburger (raves for this burger...beats other nearby spots...local beef and plenty of it)
Essentially, the items are well thought out and clearly there is a professional palette behind the menu. Â The menu combined with the beers keeps me wanting to come back and try all the other items on the menu.
The staff was right on with all our needs.
The kitchen has been overhauled from the old place and the place smells clean with an essence of whatever is cooking which gets the appetite going.
They are kids friendly being armed with coloring papers etc. Â The bar side is away from the kids if you desire some away time too. Â
Great for large groups.
Extensive beer list featuring local micros.
The place is in the heart of historic Albany so there is plenty to walk around and see. Â
Thought it says "brewhouse", this is not a brewery...oh well, they left something open to work towards!
