Knowing that we would be in the Florida City area around lunchtime, I looked for a sit down restaurant where we could enjoy a leisurely lunch between sightseeing outings. Â It was a hot day and we wanted something other than fast food. Â An advertisement for the Capri Restaurant caught my attention but some online reviews of it were not encouraging. Â We decided to go anyway since it was so close to our next stop, a famous fresh fruit stand called Robert is Here. We were a party of four adults and this was our first visit to this restaurant.
We are glad that we came. Â There were plenty of parking spaces available in the front and side parking lots when we arrive around 12 noon on a weekday. Â We checked out the lunch menu posted outside and each of us found something that we liked. Â We were all impressed with the restaurant's front outside entrance - arches with white columns and classy maroon dome awnings. About half of the rest of the front and side is stone with a Spanish tiled roof.
Inside was very restful and upscale. Â We were greeted warmly by the hostess. Â A large full bar opposite the front reception desk is separated from the formal dining area by a low brick wall. Â It looked inviting with five softly lit hanging lighting fixtures and can seat over 20 customers. Â The hostess showed us to a large table alongside a wall in a corner of the King Richard Main Dining Room, named after founder Richard (Dick) Accursio. The walls in the dining room are a pale color with lovely original works of art. All the tables are covered in white tablecloths and black napkins. Â A small candle graced the table. Â We sat in lovely comfortable wood chairs with black leather backs and seats. Â
After perusing our menus, our server arrived and took our beverage orders.  There are 12 items on the Appetizer list, the most unusual is Fried Alligator for $8.99. Salad lovers with want one of their 11 Salad choices..  With 12 dressing choices and extra option additions,  you  can make your own creation.  I saw several different salad orders served and they looked very fresh and appealing. A variety of Wraps, Subs, Minis, Panini and Burgers round out the Lunch Menu.  They are served with your choice of soup, salad or French fries. Most entrees range around $9-$10.  There are many Pasta choices too numerous to mention here or you can choose your pasta shape and sauce, $8.99.  If I am ever in the area again, I would love to taste either their Linguine with Sausage and Broccoli, $9.29 or Lasagna, $9.59.  Whole Pizza Pies and Beef choices are priced a bit higher. A quick glance of the Dinner Menu showed that most items are under $20.  A few are at Market Price and Broiled Veal Chops and Fruitta Di Mare are over $20.  If you still have room for dessert there are over 16 choices on the menu.  I would like to try their secret recipe Key Lime Pie or Banana Cream Pie,  $4.29.
Carlos, our waiter, then explained the specials and mentioned the lunch buffet for $9.95. Â One of us decided on the Vegetable Wrap with the Escarole Soup of the Day, $9.59 which he later said both tasted delicious. Â Three of us decided to take a peek at the buffet offerings. Â It looked refreshing and appealing so we chose the buffet.
It was divided into two sections - a cold salad bar with around 15 items and a hot entrée section including a choice of soups. White linens over maroon tablecloths covered each section that added a note of elegance to the buffet. A lovely piece of art hug on the wall above the hot buffet completing the warm ambiance.   We filled a small plate with a selection of salad choices including tuna salad and Waldorf salad.  When we returned to our table there was a basket of delicious warn garlic rolls that were outstanding.  We wolfed them down in no time and our server refilled the basket.  Then we went back for a  slice of pepperoni pizza and a small bowl of Escarole soup that was piping hot and so delicious.  We still had room for the hot entrees.  I had a small piece of the Chicken Marsala with lots of mushrooms in a hearty gravy, a small serving of the fish entrée with spinach and tomatoes  and a small serving of the pasta. We all ate our fill and everyone was satisfied with their meal.  The waiter stopped by to refill our beverages and bring us some ice. Â
We were never rushed  and our server was pleasant and accommodating. We had a lovely view of the outside patio area  from large windows and sliding glass doors.   Although I didn't go outside, I could see that it has different size wrought iron tables and chairs with umbrellas. Trailing vines overhanging the stone walls, pretty potted plants and decorative iron fencing made the setting very attractive.  If piped in background Italian music played, you would think that you were in Tuscany.  What a lovely setting for a wedding or rehearsal party, I thought.
Everyone is always raving about this place. Â I finally decided to give it a try. Â Where do I begin.... Â Seems mostly older people frequent this establishment. Â People who discuss things loudly that shouldn't be discussed at a restaurant.(oh you know look at my sore, scab, etc.) Â I know some people aren't bothered by this sort of stuff. Â I dont need to hear or see scabs while I am trying to eat.
I went during lunch buffet. Â Let me just say that wasn't a buffet in any way. Â They had chicken, tilapia, vegatables, mac & cheese, salad, & pizza. Â Very limited quantities BTW. Â So limited they kept running out! Â The place wasn't busy enough for food to run out. Â The food was ok. Â THe best was mac & cheese. Â Tilapia had no flavor. Â
The servise was just ok. Â I was really expecting much better from this place. Â Was highly dissapointed.
I love me a Throwback, and that's what the Capri is. Â It's been here forever, and before the remodel man, could you tell! Â It still seems dated to me, but that's part of its charm, in my opinion. Â Nevertheless, it's an Italian Joint in Florida City, where the pickings are more than slim. Â Service runs the gamut, but we've never had a bad experience here.
On to the food. Â I judge Italian restaurants by their red sauce. Â I mean, what better barometer of Italian food is there? Â Capri's sauce is not watery, flavorful, not too heavy on the red pepper flakes (personal pet peeve.) Â Thumbs Up. Â Secondly: Â Meatballs. Â I make my own meatballs. Â Often. Â They're the best you've ever had. Â So that being said, I rarely get meatballs while dining out, because I know I'll be disappointed. Â Capri's meatballs didn't disappoint me. Â It all started with a Pizza. Â "Hey they've got Meatballs as toppings on their Pizza" Â --"Okay, let's get it!" Â Fast forward: Â NOMS! Â Sliced thinly but thick enough to retain their texture, not mushy, not rubbery, not weirdly colored or flavored. Â Just... Good! Â (Not my meatballs... but still!) Â Once, when I was on a no-carb kick, I just got a side of meatball and ate it with a knife and fork. Â So... Yeah, that says a lot.
We've also enjoyed their veal dishes (parm and marsala), chicken dishes (Picatta is a fave), and once even their Prime Rib (A leftover, no doubt, from their earlier days, but a success!) Â
And here's a major bonus: Â They've got Escarole! Â Sauteed with garlic and oil and then broiled with breadcrumbs and cheese on top. Â Yeah. Â Good.
I'm definitely a fan of the Capri. Â Not that I need an excuse to trek out to the 'Glades and play with some gators, but this makes a nice bribe for dinner on the way back!
Horrible - food, service, decor and cleanliness. Went there with 3 folks and without exception none of us could eat more then 1 bite of anything we were served. We even had an argument about a kids spagheti and meatball entree for our 5 year old. apparently, the concept of kids selections did not exist and they gave us a VERY hard time to bring just a small spaghetti with a couple of meatballs. Didn't matter - even the 5 year old recognized horrible food and didn't eat more then a couple of bites. I tried it: sticky cold spaghetti, gummy meatballs, tasteless watery sauce. Gross! Don't go! no matter what anyone in homestead says, this place is awful! Drive 10 miles and get real food!!
Review Source:A light touch of class on the Road to Everglades National Park or the Florida Keys.
How do you define a touch of class. In this case its because its obvious that they are really trying to do a good job, and if you leave your iPhone on the table, you will probably get it back. The staff really is nice.  Its a reasonably priced family style italian restaurant.  I think the food is good, if not gourmet.  There are many activities on a weekend that can take you to that area, especially if you have guests.  Capri is a place to consider if you are in that area and its time to eat.  Interestingly and surprisingly I noticed something on the menu I had not seen yet elsewhere.  I order it being health conscious.  Its meatless ravioli or lasagna with tofu instead of cheese.  A bit innovative for an old restaurant.   The best part about Capri is if you have guests that you dont know what to do with, a stop at Capri to eat can take up  somepart of a day in the Redlands or  Evergladess National Park or The Keys and it seems to fit right in with the excursion and it looks like you know where you are going. :)
The food's pretty bad and overpriced. I ordered the veal parmigiana, and the cheese still had indentations left from the plastic it was frozen in. I'm not sure whether the restaurant buys its food pre-made or prepares its dishes ahead of time and then freezes them; either way, if I'm going to pay $16.95 for an entree -- any entree -- I expect the restaurant to make the food fresh. I suspect, too, that the soup came from a can, as the turkey in it was clearly not fresh--it had the texture you'd expect from the meat you'd find in, say, Lunchables. With so many farms nearby, why not use fresh food? Three other things that were a little off-putting: first, the menus were old and soiled; second, the hostess was unpleasant in a Bea Arthur meets Barbra Bush sort of way (she must be the owner or the owner's mother or wife...); third, the decor makes the place look like a funeral home, which is disturbing since most of the clientele seems to be seniors. With all that noted, the waitstaff is very friendly.
Review Source:A very large restaurant with large diningrooms so there's not a cozy feel here, but we did love that all the tables were round giving even parties of four a nice conversation group. White tableclothes, prompt service and a nice wine also added to a pleasant experience. My husband very much enjoyed the lasagna, my make your own pasta was mediocre. Huge portions, reasonable prices.
Review Source:This place is strange. The manager was walking around speaking loudly, during our entire meal, about mold in the fireplace and a waitress needing to finish her "ham sammie" before being able to come back to a table. Totally unprofessional. Our waitress was sweet and took great care of us, but the food lacked any real flavor. The best part of the meal was the bread basket.
Review Source:We were with a group of 12....recommended this restaurant by a couple we met on the way back to St Petersburg from Key West as a good place to eat while spending the evening in Florida city:  We are a tough group too!  The decor was very Italian and made me feel like I was back home in Boston's North End Italian neighborhood.....we were pleasantly greeted by the owner (who turns out is from the Boston area and his dad the founder of the Capri had once worked at Prince Spaghetti) ....the dress was casual and we were all very comfortable in our biker clothes......our waitress Bridgett was very pleasant and professional and a pro at handling a party of 12 hungry bikers...the wine selection was very good, the beer cold and my vodka martini perfect.....the menu had enough items to meet most any likes and desires in an Italian restaurant....there was also an early bird menu .....a few ordered from the early bird menu and were very happy w/the selections, quality & price...I ordered off the house menu and had the Fettuccine Carbonara which was probably one of the best I have ever had outside of eating it home cooked by my friends mother...also, make note: there were small covered serving plates of a pretty good Romano Cheese on every table...the rolls were served hot and had a wonderful herb flavor (our group their fair share...as for the deserts most were made on site and were exceptionally good ....our tab for cocktails, wine, 2 dinners & coffee/desert was very reasonable  We saw a very diverse clientele with some couples on dates, a few couples together for the evening, some elderly (for the early bird) and 12 bikers during our ...the owner James Accursio not only greeted each person as they entered....but, came by the tables to see if all was well   After our 870/mile bike trip our group raved about the Capri dinner as the best food over our 4 day trip.   Give the Capri a try and enjoy your meal and dining experience   PS: they honored a 10% discount from our hotel (which sucked)
Review Source:Went here because it was mentioned by Schnebly Redland's Winery as a local place for good eats. Â Having not had Italian food (other than pizza) in awhile, my mouth watered as soon as we entered this place!
It was a Friday night, right around 5pm and the place was fairly empty. Â They've got outside seating, but it was a just a tad too bit chilly for us, so we stayed inside. The dining room reminded me of the main dining room on a cruise ship -- the style of the tables, chairs, and the good service.
Because it was only 5pm, they were offering Early Bird Specials on their menu. Â Items on that menu included soup or salad and a side of spaghetti -- such a great deal! Â The eggplant parmesan was nice and cheesy, and the red sauce on the spaghetti tasted extra good. Â There was something really fresh about the housemade vinaigrette as well, and sometimes iceberg lettuce in a salad is THE most refreshing thing around. I really enjoyed it!
Service was nice and friendly, and at the point we left (around 6:30pm) the place was hopping with elderly folk from table to table. Â We were definitely the youngsters in the place at late 30s/early 40s.
I'd go here again just for ANYTHING with that red sauce. Â Good stuff!
We have eaten here a few times with mixed results. Â I want this place to be good because it is close to home and has a pretty big menu. Â A few of the times we have been there it has been pretty good, but the last time we ate there we were sorely disappointed. Â The service was a train wreck. Â Our waiter was a young man who clearly had much to learn about the art of waiting tables. Â My wife and I ordered a couple drinks, an appetizer an our entrees. A few minutes after ordering he brought out our salads and disappeared. Â We were thinking WTF? Â Salads before the appetizer? Â But we were pretty hungry so we ate the salads. Â The next time he came to the table was to bring the entrees. Â When asked about the appetizer he tried to deny we ordered one and hardly made an effort to make it right. Â At that point we didn't even want it anymore.
Other factors that warrant a two star review are:
- The tables are way to close together. Â We always learn way more about our neighboring tables than we want to know
- Â The cliental of the Capri are usually elderly. Â At almost 40 years old, I always feel like I am the youngest person in the place.
- Â The food is right on the edge of being over-priced. Â You can get equal quality at Mama Mia's for a few bucks less.
So the bottom line is the place is kind of mediocre and we probably won't be back.
PS.... Â Three hours after eating at the Capri and writing the above review, I am suffering from all of the symptoms of food poisoning. Â It is going to be a long night. Â DO NOT EAT HERE!!
Was the main entree good? Phenomenal actually. Was the soup good? Not really - I was reminded of canned soup. The service? Incredibly slow. Would we go back? Yes: the spaghetti was fantastic, the price was just right, and the waitress was extremely pleasant. It would be nice if they sped up the service and worked on the soup.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I came here on a whim last night, not really knowing what to expect. Â We could smell the aromas coming from the kitchen while still in the parking lot, and it made us even hungrier.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and we both commented on how great the service was - something we're not used to in Miami. Â You don't feel like they're rushing you out the door, they wait until you're done with your appetizer before bringing the salad, and wait until you're done with your salad before bringing your entree.
My boyfriend ordered the calamari (which is how he judges how good an Italian restaurant is). Â I don't eat calamari... it's a mental thing. Â But I tried it and it wasn't at all chewy. Â He said it was one of the better calamaris he's had.
Our meals came with either soup or salad. Â I had a side caesar, and he had cream of potato soup. Â My caesar was good, with fresh lettuce, but had a bit too much dressing for my taste. Â His soup was tasty, but could have used a dash of salt and pepper.
For our main entrees, he ordered the chicken parm, which came with a side of spaghetti, while I had the manicotti. He enjoyed the chicken, and I really liked the manicotti - the sauce was a tomato sauce that wasn't too chunky, and it came topped with a very generous amount of mozzarella. Â It came with two crepes filled with ricotta, but with the really delicious bread they give you, plus the salad, neither of us could finish our meals.
Right now they're celebrating their 50th anniversary, so they have a lot of specials going on. Â I believe one of them is 50% to go pizzas Monday through Thursday. Â When we first came in, someone was walking out with four pizzas, and they smelled fantastic, so we're definitely going to take advantage of that special soon!
Overall, the quality of the food was pretty good, and the service was excellent. Â I'm sure we'll be back :)
