It is unfortunate because we have a vacation home in Tahoe Vista and were really looking forward to this place opening under new management because it is such a nice location. Â However, we definitely will not go back! Â Although the food was "okay" ~ for the price, it was like eating at a diner. Â We had a reservation that they could not find although they phoned to confirm, the hostess did not understand english, the waiter did not know the specials (there were only two), although they have white tablecloths, the silverware was cafeteria style, mismatched, something you throw away, not use. Â We were looking forward to "fine dining" on the lake which is definitely not what we got. Â We had one cocktail, one beer, one salad, two entrees = $100, which is okay, if it was even an okay dining experience, which it was not. Â If you want a fine dining experience on the lake, I would recommend: Â Garwoods, Jake's, or Sunnyside. Â They are all about the same price as Captain Jon's, but the food is great, a really nice dining experience and you are right on the lake! If you want to spend a little more, go to Incline. Â There is a terrific restaurant on the lake that is really great, but be prepared to pay $200+ for 2.
Review Source:After reading the previous reviews I was a little skeptical but while at the nearby beach was given a recommendation so decided to give it a try.. the reviews couldn't have been further from the truth. Coupled with an incredible lakeside view this place was amazing. My wife had the rainbow trout which she said was amazing and I had the salmon wellington. My son enjoyed his fish and chips and we all really liked the ahi appetizer. I found our waiter to be very attentive and accomodating as well as informative suggesting numerous options for hiking in the area. All in all a great dining experience and we have plans for another visit. Maybe the multiple bad reviews were a result of previous management as we were informed that the restaurant has a new owner.
Review Source:STAY AWAY! I think the only reason this place is in business is because the view and the outdoor deck is amazing. People must keep coming back just to sit out there on a nice day and are forced to order food and drinks for the privilege. We walked in on a friday night and eventually got seated. Ordered drinks that were so terrible we threw them over the deck into the water because we couldn't get the attention of the staff to take them away or replace them. When our dinner came, the server forgot utensils for 2 of the 4 of us. Eventually, we got up and wandered around until we found some inside. We found a pitcher and glasses and poured ourselves some water. None of the servers seemed to notice or care. It wasn't like they were too busy to help us... there were 2 other tables seated there! The food... disgusting. I wouldn't feed it to my worst enemy... and its not cheap, standard SF prices for a rinky dink place falling apart in Tahoe. When our server finally came back, it wasn't to check on us, offer us anything, it was just to give us our check, frankly, right after we had managed to start eating with the utensils we went and got ourselves. What a crap experience in a beautiful setting. Ugh. My stomach still hurts from taking a few bites of that disgusting gruel they call food. We went home and had pizza.
Review Source:Complete gem of a restaurant and bar in a stunning and breathtaking location. Staff was friendly and professional, extensive cocktail menu and good happy hour prices. Can't beat being on the water with a good drink and nice people. A wonderful breakfast is offered during the summer as well. Highly recommended for anyone visiting or local, good bar crowd and awesome music too
Review Source:This review is for BREAKFAST only.
The breakfast menu is very basic but it is surprisingly reasonably priced. Â I expected to have to pay a premium (like you do at Gar Woods, for example) for sitting on a dock or indoors with a panoramic lakeview, but that wasn't the case. Â So, considering that, breakfast at Captain Jon's is a bargain.
It was surprisingly uncrowded considering this might be the best restaurant setting at the lake.
We've eaten there twice. Â The omelets are reliable. Â The pancakes with fresh strawberries were good, although on my second visit they tried to pawn off some past-their-prime blueberries on me. Â They cheerfully substituted strawberries, but I was disappointed that someone in the kitchen thought that heating the spoiled blueberries would make them salvagable. Â They should have just apologized and told me they were out of blueberries and asked if I wanted strawberries instead.
The food is fine, but it's not the main reason to go to Captain Jon's for breakfast. The real reason is that sitting right at the water is such an awesome way to start the day. Â We will definitely return for breakfast.
I gave one star for the view.. Everything else sucks! Came here arnd 1130... They have no coffee no food??? Seriously? Even the waiter told us that everything is falling apart at this place!! Hahaha.. Btw they also make u wait for so long.. Unattentive waiters who can't get the orders right!
Nothing is good here except for the view of the lake.. Come here if u just wanna kick back.. U don't have to order anything because I don't think the staff are gonna notice u anyway.. They don't care and I don't think they won't even notice u!... However if u are looking for a place to eat.. Don't go here! Find someplace else...
Terrible service!! I've tried going back 3 times and every time its awful service- which is. Shame because it's an awesome spot- you can take your floats and swim while drinking- the first time we tried to go this summer, we sat for 20 minutes, when the waiter came over we asked to speak to a manger - he said he was the manager- needless to say there was 6 tables there- 2 servers and a bartender- someone could have atleast said they would be over shortly- but instead walked past us several times ignoring us. Such a shame!!!! Get it together! Please I'd love to have another local spot I enjoy!!!
Review Source:We LOVE this spot! One of the best views of the lake by far. We bring all our friends here.... EXCEPT.... For the 3rd year in a row you think they would get their bartending together... Just so off! Be safe and order a beer! Appetizers are not good ether :) but we keep returning because they are nice people with a fabulous spot!
Review Source:Dining on Salmon Oscar, on the North Lake Tahoe lakefront in Tahoe Vista with a good bottle of wine, good friends and serenaded with live vocals and guitar. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!
My wife and I think that dining should be a complete experience: location, décor, ambiance, good food, friendly service and a decent price. And that's what we got when we visited Captain John's on a Sunday night.
Do you know that this is the one and only restaurant where you can DINE ON THE WATER at North Lake Tahoe?
The feeling is great. The view is outstanding. It was a little windy, but the dining area on the lake docks is sheltered so enjoyable. They also have inside and sheltered deck dining when the weather is not as nice. The staff was friendly and service good. By the end of the evening we knew Jason, Jen, Garrett, Tony and Diane and felt quite at home with many of them visiting with us after dinner. We watched the spectacular sunset at a table with several other patrons as we enjoyed the music. And Tuck (the musician) even sat with us after his gig. The menu looked good even though we could only enjoy one meal. I liked the wine list - robust and diverse without being overly priced.
Friendly, unpretentious, great views, ambiance, food and drink without paying too much.
We really recommend that you should try it!

Wow, I didn't know lunch could go so poorly! Â Awful service, and that's the upside...
We stopped because we really want to have a beer on the water, and maybe grab some salads for lunch. We sat down and it took our waitress over 30 minutes to take our drink order. Ok, it *felt* like 30 minutes, but my husband assures me it was just over 10 minutes. Then it took another 10 to get the beers ( I'm done exaggerating, it really was at least another 10). Â The service was so bad we knew we needed at least a 15 minute lead time for anything we wanted.
And finally the food came... And the bread was still frozen. Three tries later, it was mostly cooked, and quite tasty.
I give them an F on service
I give them an F on food, did I mention my $9 house salad had wilted lettuce?
I give them an A for location on the water.
Great chowder. Â That said, Â I ordered the Scallops and they were char seared crisp on the outside and still cold frozen on the inside. Â I called it to the attention of Jason the owner and he put his finger into the scallop and then said "oops, I will fix that right away." Â My family had just about finished when my dish returned, The same half scallop he stuck his finger in, re-seared... now they were black. Â Sad to review this way because the view is priceless and the people were nice, but they just don't know food. Â My son ordered duck, and we all tasted it and thought it was turkey. Â The bill for five was $230 with tip including half off the scallops..... over priced and not worth half of that
Review Source:I had my rehearsal dinner here in the middle of September and we had a great time. Â The staff and Jason were really accommodating (though I would beware hiring any more new-to-serving waiters from here on out..) ... when we went back the day after the wedding, they were equally cool!
I do suggest the appetizers. Â Oh... AND the mai tais. Â But they ALSO have a pretty well priced wine selection, which was nice to see.
This is a great place to hang in the afternoon because they have dockside cocktail waitresses and BOMB tacos.
We were delighted to find Captain Jon's early on our vacation. Â The food was great (both healthy low fat dishes for me and great burgers and fries for my husband). Â The dockside seating provided a spectacular unobstructed view of the lake and the mountains. Â The wait staff were friendly and efficient, but best of all, one section of the patio allowed dogs. Â (This is the only dog friendly restaurant with dockside seating we found on the whole lake.)
We loved this place so much we came back three times during our vacation.
I'm a little surprised to read the prior reviews. I live in SF and have a pretty high bar for both food quality and service. Â Our experience couldn't have been better. Â As for the prices, we ate (accompanied by wine) for about half the price of comparable sites in South Lake Tahoe. Â
We'll definitely be back!!!
I can't believe I haven't been here before. Â This was the perfect place to end a vacation or just come sit to watch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail. Â The view is by far one of the best in the North Tahoe area. Â
My brother-in- law introduced us to this great place. Â Our waiter (David) was amazing and super attentive. Â We ordered mostly appetizers (oysters, ahi, coconut shrimp and the rib plate). Â The food was very good. Â The lobster bisque made me want to lick the bowl afterward! Â This is a very laid back place but offers a more upscale menu. Â I have been coming up to Tahoe for years and this is definately on my list to visit again. Â I'm sorry for the folks that had a bad experience, I would recommend trying it once again and ask for David. Â If nothing else, a drink on that patio is a breath taking place to be.
The service was so bad that we left before our food arrived. Â Our waiter (Pete) was more concerned with what tables other waiters were stealing from him and why the hostess wasn't assigning him more tables, yet he couldn't even manage to serve the tables he had. We waited over 20 minutes just to get our drinks and had to remind him that we ordered them. Â Then he brought our lobter bisque - it was cold and had a skin on top from sitting out so long. Â We ate that and then waited another 30 minutes, never seeing our waiter again, and finally decided that it wasn't worth the wait. Â My parents went, accidentally, the next day for lunch. They also had a bad experience with the service and said the food was horrible. Â Mom had fish and chips - she's from Seattle and knows good F&C - these were the worst she's ever had. Â If i could give no stars I would....this place sucks and shouldn't be in business anymore. Â They should let someone who can cook good food and provide great service have that beautiful dock!
Review Source:Nice, relaxing ambiance and lakeviews ruined by very poor service.
Waited way too long for our food to arrive. Â Wait staff did not seem professional (one was wearing sunglasses). Â And we overheard a waitress ask another table whether they'd been helped or not. Â Meaning, there is some obvious dysfunction in the table assignment process. Â We noticed this throughout - some people got helped immediately, others had to wait for inexplicable reasons.
In the railing, right next to my seat, was a large spiderweb that I had to take care to avoid. Â Granted, we were outside, but it was still not something I'd want to expect at a restaurant that is known for its outdoor seating.
I had a good time. Â We did not eat. Â Just had drinks, so maybe that is why everything is ok. Â See. Â Drink and everything will be ok. Â We sat in the little bar right on the water. Â It was great. Â Some people there (not workers) told me that one of the owners is a psycho, but i work with psychos too so i don't mind. Â Spice it up!
Review Source:Captain Jon's was the perfect place for our rehearsal dinner when our son was married! The staff were unbelievably courteous, efficient, and friendly. Working with Gordon was a dream - he accomodated our every need and desire. The food was outstanding - everything from the prime rib to the vegetarian dish received rave reviews from our guests. Plus it was just darned fun! Go there...enjoy!
Review Source:Food - great. Â Views - great. Â Service - sh!t. Â
It's rare that I don't get along with people but this particular bartender and I were like oil and water. Â And since I have bartending experience in a pretty hectic environment, I can say that he was definitely in the wrong. Â It was mid-week, off season, and not busy. Â This guy was acting like it was the 4th of July and was sweatin' like a pig. Â I was honestly afraid to order things in fear of his sarcastic facial expressions and weird/creepy sarcastic nod in place of the word "OK" or "sure". Â When I asked to split the check, he told me it couldn't be done. Â Someone elses orders were put on our check and I didn't want to be responsible for what this very drunk person ordered. Â Anyway, he told me that he "didn't want to be bothered with this for 20 minutes". Â I love how people exaggerate time. Â 20 minutes? Â really? Â It was maybe 2 minutes. Â If he would have simply split the check like I had asked, we wouldn't have had the problem. Â To wrap this up, he was a total a$$ and has no place in the service industry. Â
If I ever go there again, I will walk out the door if I ever see that bartender.
I'm giving extra stars for the view alone plus the hungry canadian geese lingering by the dock. We were damn hungry by the time we finished kayaking and the Captain's was practically next door. Â We were serviced quickly and politely. I got the fish and chips...now my norm with f&c is that the chips are usually french fries. Nuh-uh...this is real deep fried fresh chips crinkle-cut from a real potato. The fish was flaky and not dripping with nasty oils. Laura & Michelle L. both got the salmon burger with aioli sauce. What was interesting was that the burger patty was a mixture of fresh salmon, cucumber, other veggies...then other fresh condiments on the side for you to slop onto your patty. Yummy!
Parking is pretty good, but the bathroom is only 2 tiny stalls. It's a tight fit and don't even think about how a wheelchair is going to fit in there...it doesn't.
Romantico setting right on the lake. Â Combine that with sunset, twinkly lights, a sliver of a moon over the mountains and a loved one, it was a great place for a cocktail and dessert. Â Friendly service, good housemade dessert. Â Would definitely like to check this place out for a lunch or dinner. Â Go.
Review Source:It's not often you find GOOD fish tacos in-general. But it's especially difficult to find good fish tacos at a good price, and especially the way they pile it in those tortillas.
During the summer months, I highly recommend Captain Jon's. It's got an incredible view, and a lot of promise.
They do an "open mic" on Thursdays lately, but it's been more like an "Old Man Open Jam" session. Many of my friends have gone and been turned away because they were "in jam mode" and wouldn't let anyone else on stage. Kinda defeats the purpose. And it would be pretty depressing to stress out all day as an amateur musician, preparing for the three songs I want to do in front of a small crowd only to be turned away. But, maybe you'll have more luck than my buddies!
The bar is down on the water. Â The restaurant is up top. Â We went to the restaurant. Â
Had the $20 seafood dinner special which included salmon cake, seared tuna, coconut prawns. Â Also included cucumber salad, ginger, and wasabi. Â Very very tasty. Â A glass of wine was part of the special too. Â Only downside, it really needed some potato and vegetable. Â Id like to comeback and try the ribs. Â They looked and smelled really good.
I haven't experienced the restaurant at Captain Jon's, as in the off season, only the bar area is open. However, I give the bar 4 stars. They have good music on weekend nights, an open mike night that doesn't suck on Thursday nights, and a special menu ($20 gets you a rail drink, glass of wine, or beer, and an entree from the bar menu) that features good food. The atmosphere is mostly locals who mostly know each other, and everybody is friendly and pleasant. It's become a weekend staple for me!
Review Source:Great view, wait staff and drinks. Â Missed happy hour. Â I noticed that another reviewer complained of the margarita being to strong. Â My vodka tonic was strong...and I loved it! Â
We ordered salmon cakes (the best!) and seared ahi (not the best I've had, but ok) for appetizers. Â I had the house salad (candied pecans, gorgonzola, spring mix, balsamic dressing...a great salad!) as my meal with the intention of ordering more of those great salmon cakes after I finished, but I was too full. Â My husband had the filet, medium rare, just like he ordered. Â Perfect all around. Â $110 for dinner and 4 called drinks. Â Will go again.
They had a special going on for an entree (a smaller portion than the normal one) and a well drink, glass of wine or a beer for $20. Â Good idea and choices, but we didn't take advantage of it since the items we wanted were not part of the special.
Note: We were here in March. Â No outdoor seating and although the view of the lake was beautiful, we could not see the sunset.

They didn't have clam chowder, so they're only getting three stars.
The waiter was very polite and quick to take our order and fill our drinks. Â Our food was very good and they heaped on the fries.
We spent about $30 for two people at lunch. Â We will likely go again in the future.
What is it with this city and its restaurants? Â No one has Dr. Pepper.
First let me say that the drinks and lobster bisque soup was amazing. Then our entree's came and I ordered salmon with red potatoes and veggies for 30$. I ate a potatoe right when I got my plate and it was ROTTEN. The potatoe was beyond servable by weeks it must have been obvious before hitting the pan. The center of the other potatoes were almost liquid, the whole plate stunk. The waiter (Chris W.) came by to ask how everything was and we told him about the potatoes. He took only the potatoes to the kitchen and brought back a new batch. Â He said "These should be better" and walked off. Â To be honest it didn't matter that the new potatoes were good, the entree was already ruined, I couldn't get the rotten taste out of my mouth. The plate was awfull the salmon had no flavor, and was almost raw in the middle. My husband ordered Swordfish that was average. He didn't apologize for my plate. Â We questioned what kind of resturant serves a plate full of ROTTEN potatoes! We also were not asked if we wanted more drinks and our waters weren't refilled once. Then the waiter came back to see if we wanted desert. My husband says "Sure I will let you redeem yourself for the potatoes." Our cheese cake and creme brulee were really good then the waiter brought the check and didn't say a word. There is no excuss to serve anyone rotton food and then not to offer anything in reprisal was just too much. Â We left a 6 dollar tip for a 116 dollar dinner that should have cost 80. Â It was confusing how the appetizers were so good and the entree's so awfull. Â I can't believe Chris, our waiter, did not seem to think that serving rotten food was inexcusable. Â I wouldn't expect this kind of food or service from any successful resturant. Â Especially one charging 100 dollars, or more, for two people to eat a nice meal.
Review Source:Well what can i say. This place had an awesome view. Star #1
The hostess was very nice and found us a great seating location. Star #2 Menu was easy to read. Star #3
NOW FOR THE CONS:
WAITER SERVICE TOOK TOO LONG WAITED OVER 15 MINUTES FOR THE WAITRESS TO COME AND ASKED WHAT WE WOULD LIKE. THEN SHE SERVED A DIFFERENT TABLE DRINKS FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE WERE SEATED FIRST. THE MARGARITA HAD WAY TO MUCH JOSE ALCOHOL. Â (A WORD OF ADVISED HAVE THE KITCHEN IN THE SAME AREA AS THE DINNING PLACE.) NOTICED THE WAITRESS LEAVE FOR A WALK INTO A DIFFERENT BUILDING. Â
OH AND 1 MORE THING. YOU SHOULD PUT UP A WINDOW ON THE DOCK WERE PEOPLE SIT IN CASE A CHILD RUNS AND FALLS OVER INTO THE LAKE.
Ok, my husband and I decided to give this place a try based on the reviews. The view is wonderful, right on the lake. (star #1) The place is relatively small and each table has a good view. Â We were seated and given our menus and then left to decide. Â We waited at least 15-20 minutes before the hostess came over and asked if we had been helped yet. Â When we told her no, she apologized and took our order. Â We ordered the house salads, which were the only good thing about this place besides the view. Â It was mixed greens, dried cranberries, candied pecans, gorgonzola, and roasted red peppers.(star #2) Â Our meals were bland. Â First they messed up my order, giving me prime rib instead of a filet mignon. Â Then they overcooked the filet once I got it. Â To me, medium cooked meat should be a little pink, this was well done in my opinion. Â (The owner argued that it was pink in the middle) Â The vegetable fettuccine had little to no seasoning, and had some kind of watery sauce. Â I guess we're used to garlic or some type of herbs to season our vegetables.
The owner did come over and apologize for the problems we had with our meal. Â He offered to buy us dessert, but by that time we were ready to go. Â It then took us another 10 minutes to get our check, when we had to get up and ask for it. Â The owner did take 50% off the total cost of dinner. Â He was very sorry and offered to have us come back to try again. Â I think the issue could have been no one was assigned to our table so we kept getting lost in the shuffle.
We arrived half an hour before sunset, & took each moment using the camera to take shots at the surrounding scenery of this restaurant that stands on the beach of lovely Lake Tahoe. It has that helplessly romantic ambiance that gets one to think about possibilities & what-could-have-beens. Soon it got unbearably cold, and the place was engulfed fast in  darkness, and we got inside to enjoy our dinner.  I had fresh vegetable fettuccine, which turned out to be a delight, considering that I was still full from the lunch buffet hours ago with my friends in Reno.  My friends got a halibut dish, & the prime rib---both looked and tasted great!  For dessert, we had slices of sinful dark chocolate cake w/cream & strawberry, that tasted awesome!
Service has been excellent; I noticed a number of customers that were with us that early evening. Â The staff were busy paying attention to the customers, & were friendly. Â They're graciously ready to respond to curious questions, & to make suggestions to where else to go in the Lake's varied attractive offerings & scenic spots.
This is one place worth visiting again and again!
Great little place on the water in the strip of restaurants in Tahoe Vista. Specializing in "Country French", they offer a good variety of Seafood and Land animals alike. Old school environment is a good alternative to the pricier Petit Pier down the way if your looking for French influenced cuisine.
