Here's a new ethnically schizophrenic culinary hybrid challenge for you! It's the Cheers on 1st Indian Taco. Well, it's not actually Indian and it's not actually a Taco but it is at Cheers on 1st. What we have here is a Huarache of Pizza Dough (or Na'an maybe?) but they don't bake it, they deep fry it. Then smother it with Taco Seasoned Ground Beef, Black Olives, Cheddar Cheese, Romaine Lettuce, Diced Tomatoes, Onion, Sour Cream and Salsa. Sounds rather strange, and it was. But it was very good. The correct method of attack was uncertain. I conquered the toppings with a fork but pulled the Dough apart as finger food which made for a rather messy proposition that required a couple of napkins.
I asked my server, April, if she'd ever had one. She said: "Yes. It's one of my favorites!" (I'll bet she says that to all the guys.) I have to admit, it was a new and very pleasant experience for me. If you're not on a diet, I'll bet you'll like it.
Cheers on 1st is much like a bazillion other friendly neighborhood bars. Clean and welcoming but unremarkable. If you find yourself in Stayton Oregon around mealtime, you could do much worse.
Note: Kade (From Portland) explained to me that an Indian Taco is made with Native American Frybread. I was on the wrong continent! Thanks Kade.
