Went to Chevy's last Monday and sat in the bar section to watch the sports and have dinner. Our waitress was also our bartender, she appeared to not have enough time to do either well, but she was very friendly and apologetic (thus the 1 star). But, her bus/waiter help seemed to be of no help to her at all, He jumped around from table to table chatting with the customers, and I observed him doing tequila shots with a table of women near us, not once but twice, who knew Chevy's let their employees drink with the customers. I would have complained to the manager but he seemed to be buddies with this guy, so I didn't bother. Our food took 45 min. to get to us, needless to say it was cold as the sauce had jelled over the tamales, I think Mr. Tequila shots was suppose to bring it to us. It has been 6 months since the last time we went to Chevy's in Auburn because of the poor service and cold food we received the last time we were there. It will be awhile, if ever, before we return again.
Review Source:I really thought everything here was just fine. Â Warm chips/fresh salsa and lunch size chicken fajitas. Â The bartender/server was happy to give a container for salsa to go, and I brought home plenty of leftovers for later. Â My only gripe was that my "Skinny Margarita" that came in the 8 oz size cost about the same as my lunch size fajitas. Â What in the heck is going into those margaritas?! Â Gold...maybe gold.
Review Source:The only reason I gave it 1 stars instead of none is because at least the food was hot.
It was not busy there but the service was terrible and slow. I worked in restaurants as a cook for 20 years so I know if a restaurant is busy or not.
Â
We had a table of four so we went through a lot of chips and salsa which seemed to really annoy the waitresses. Our waitress, who had a name tag that mentioned she was some sort of princess, was a complete ditz.It took for EVER to get drink and coffee refills(we were eating hot salsa and salty chips, get us our damn drinks!) and what are they thinking when they decided chili dog sauce was a good idea to put on their enchiladas. It should be a normal red sauce, not a chili meat sauce.
And what is a Mexican restaurant thinking when the only beef they have is ground beef. Not just ground beef for certain things but the ONLY beef they have in their kitchen is ground beef, So, if you order anything with beef it's ground beef. Is this a nice Mexican restaurant or not? Even Taco Hell has more than ground beef.
$90 for all four of us for worse service than Taco bell. I will never eat there again.
Love that we can come right in and sit down (usually no waiting). Chips and salsa- yummy!. Waitress was attentive and friendly. Manager and hostess were oblivious (lady manager stood around and watched hostess walk right by me and did not occur to ask if I needed anything). Food is mediocre.
Review Source:In Auburn on a Friday night and was able to walk right in. I never ate at a Chevy's so I did not realize that it was a Mexican restaurant.
I loved the thin chips and roasted salsa (my favorite) Not too many places have fire roasted salsa. I had chicken tacos. It was tasty with grilled chunks of chicken. CFF had the steak fajitas and the steak was tasty too.
I will have to look for the nearest Chevy's as there is not one in my area.
Our server was friendly and efficient and when I told her how much I like the salsa she gave me a portion to go.
Good mango margarita.
This particular 1 may be changing ownership as they had a posted notice on the door.
We always have a good time here! Â SUPER friendly servers! Â the food is always fresh and tasty... Â and come on, Â it's Auburn! Â I haven't found a good authentic Mexican place in town that doesn't boil all their dang meat... Â Next best thing? Â Fresh Mex of course!
Although, be warned all you El Machino super fans out there... Â there is no El Machino here... Â instead their tortillas are HAND MADE! Â (aw wah, right?)
Had a really great time with friends for a couple of birthday celebrations. Â Food good - happy hours drinks specials were awesome - try the cranberry margarita on the rocks - yummo! Â Our server Spencer was super nice and funny, even danced for us. Afterwards we headed over to Dingus McGees for more fun - super fun night!
Review Source:Not a good experience. We always stop here on the way back from Tahoe and the last time we stopped we won't be back. Waitress was terrible. Spilled water all over the table. It was not very busy when we went in and it took us a good hour to get our food which is super rare. She had a couple of glasses of wine on her tray and we all could see them start to tip as she gave us our drinks. Thank god it was white wine cause it spilled all over our buddy and she did not offer us anything for the problem. We tried to shake it off until we got our bill. A few of the items were priced way higher than they should be since it was happy hour. Got that straightened out by the manager then went to pay separately a few of the guys were charged double. We spent almost a half hour arguing with her and the manager about the bill and payment. Finally got it taken care of and were given a few free meal cards but we will not be spending them there that is for sure.
Review Source:Very good chips and salsa. Â Very good blended machine margaritas. Â Very average everything else. Â Is nothing but chips and salsa and margaritas considered a balanced meal?
I'm originally from the Los Angeles area where there are hundreds of great Mexican restaurants, so I'm spoiled. Â If you've never had really great Mexican food, then Chevy's might seem good.
The to-go meal containers are excellent. Â Heavy-duty microwaveable black compartmentalized bottom with clear top.
Unfortunately, I've not found any really great Mexican restaurants in Auburn. Â I keep looking and will let you know if I find one. Â Meanwhile, if I'm hard-up for a Mexican meal I could end up here, but it sure isn't as good as it could be. Â I don't like it much better than Taco Bell.
Wait staff is very average. Â A few are rather surly.
I agree service can be slow. The last time we were there I didn't get served until everyone else was almost finished. You know you can't go wrong with the chips and salsa...we usually order a salad....it is a chain...apparently poorly managed. We can eat here with the little people without being stressed out if one of them speaks too loudly or throws a crayon....with two under three that counts for something. I always like my salads and really love the chips and salsa.
Review Source:K... Â Generally I believe if u have nothing good to say you should say nothing at all... Â Sorry mom! Â Going to break the rule.... Â My wife and I loved to go every Friday night and eat an appetizer and have a few happy hour drinks. Â Last night proven to us why we have slowly lost interest in doing that anymore. Â For starters... Â We arrived at about 5:30 PM over 75% of the restaurant had empty tables... And yep u got it... Â We were placed on a long waiting list with a whole bunch of patrons to be seated in the "bar dining area". Apparently, a customer can only be happy in that area. Â Ordinarily, that might not have bothered us to much... However, there were so many employees running around they were bumping into each other looking for something to do..... Â Now let's review..... Â Lots of guest waiting to be seated, restaurant staff everywhere wanting something to do and 75% of the tables are empty.... Â Hum??? Â Am I the only one that can see a money making opportunity? Â 1. Put ur guests in seats to spend money, 2. Put your staff to work, to make money. Â 3. Last, but not least, keep your customers dining experience top notch ~ that way they will clammer to come back..... Â
I did not tell the whole story to save space... Â I do want to make one additional comment about our experience. At one point during our long wait, I walked to the host counter... You know to ask the question about the empty tables... Â There were 3 employees and a gentleman, who appeared to be in charge, after standing there for about 5 minutes, I realized no one was going to acknowledge my presence and I did not want to interrupt there personal conversations they were having....I just walked away shaking my head in disbelief..... Â
Please Please Please bring our Auburn service back to our Auburn Chevys.... Â I would love to be able to confidently bring my house guests and friends to dinner and Happy Hour..
Service? Â No... NO. Â We were left for dead here. Â And right at the front of the restaurant, too. Â Don't they care????
We stopped in on Sunday about 6:30 pm, thinking we could have a nice dinner. Â There was one party in front of us; we gave our name and were told it would be a few minutes. Â Lots of employees were bustling around. Â There were empty tables, so we wondered why we were made to wait 20 minutes before being seated at the closest empty table to the hostess and front door.
Someone came by with chips and salsa; someone else (a manager?) came by, asked if we wanted drinks and brought us some water and soda -- then she asked if we'd like guacamole made at our table.
The guacamole guy came, asked if we wanted peppers in it, and we said no peppers, thanks. Â So what did he do? Â Of course, he loaded it with jalapenos that still had their crusty skins on. Â Aside from the peppers, though, it was pretty good, as were the chips. Â Salsa was decent too.
I'd have reviewed the food here too, but we never got anything else.
We waited and waited as servers and more servers walked past our table without acknowledging us. Â Nobody came to take our order, so after 20 - 30 minutes, we threw $7 on the table to pay for the guacamole and soda --and left. Â Won't be going back, because they have NO EXCUSE for such poor service.
The chips and salsa are the best! yes, it's a chain, don't expect authentic, just tasty american-mexican food. Happy Hour M-F 3-7 in the bar is the way to go, half off appetizers!
My favorites to order here are the chile rellano, the chicken flautas or a Chicken Fajita Salad.
Service is consistently pretty good!
went to dinner for mothers day...got there before the rush at 4 15...still took 40 mins to get our order....margaritas were terribly watered down....as the crowds started coming in the service got even worse and slower...orders and desserts were wrong....this is the 3rd time myself family and friends have had a horrible experiance here.....and will be the last.....done with them Our total time there was almost
3 hours...and if we had not ask for our ticket who knows if we would have ever gotten outta there!!!
If I could give this location a ZERO I would!
Growing up constantly driving back and forth from Tahoe to the Bay and we would come in here all the time. Back 7 years ago this place was amazing. This past winter I came through and came in with a friend. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everything that could have gone wrong did. First our waitress spilled water all over the table, we are easy going guys, it was no big deal but this was the start to a distaster. Next our waitress spilled an entire glass of Zin on my buddies sweatshirt. We finally ordered our food and we were suppose to get a happy hour discount which ended up not happening. We talked to our waitress about the situation and she was not helpful at all. We then talked to the manager and told him that we were very disappointed with the service and that several things had happened over the course of our meal. Finally we thought we had our bill squared away when our waitress come BACK AND CONFRONTS US asking us why we thought her service was so terrible. AWKWARD!!! There were a few of us there so we all put in cash and two people were going to settle the remaining $20 of the bill between their 2 credit cards. When they got their receipts both were charged $30 for a total of $60!!!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS!! We went back and tried to speak with the manager who got in both my face and my friends face telling us that he was going to call the police because we were disturbing the restaurant etc etc. We finally left and he sheepishly met us out in the parking lot (I was thinking to fight) but it was to give us a few measly gift cards.
NEVER GOING BACK!
I've been to various Chevy's restaurants over the years when forced to by friends and family members. Â I've always liked their super-thin and crispy chips and their tasty salsa. Â However, the food has always been average-to-below.
This location seemed a bit old, dingy, and second-rate both on an absolute restaurant scale and in comparison to other Chevy's. Â The service was friendly enough and timely, but the sub-par atmosphere and very average food add up to "meh" for me. Â
There's just too much great Mexican food in California (and everywhere else) to waste time at a Chevy's.
Hoping that my previous experience at this restaurant was a one time bad experience, I tried a second time. Let's face it, sometimes it just happens at the fault of no one specific. It was a Thursday night and we were seated immediately in the booth we requested. The restaurant was pretty busy and our server was on top of it in the beginning. I ordered the "Taste of Chevy's" platter. I would figure if they are gonna title a dish to be the example of their food it would be made to be one of there better dishes. Not the case. The tamales were very ketchup-y, the beans were runny and bland, the rice was decent and moist, and the taco was "OK". Disappointed I was. I ate about 1/2 of it only because I was hungry and called it a wash. Our waiter had to be found every time we wanted something which was a bit frustrating. Desert was not offered but rather had to be sought out from another employee. My check was casually tossed on the table with none of the expected "Thank You" and end of dining banter I usually experience from well seasoned servers. All and all I was just disappointed with the experience and was still hungry when I left. The one star represents my wife's dish, the only entree enjoyed by our party of 3. Sorry Chevys but I am going to save my money and go to Taco Bell where I know what to expect.
Review Source:We actually returned there for a meal on the way home from camping last summer. Â We were aware that we were really taking a chance returning. Â
We got a table immediately, and the hostess and waitress were very warm. Â It was really busy too. Â
While we waited for our meals, we were having the chips and sauce, and when we got to the bottom of one of the salsa bowls, one of the kids noticed something unusual in it. Â Turned out to be a small piece of clear plastic, as if it had chipped off of something, like a container, or serving utensil. Â The waitress was very apologetic and brought us fresh salsa, and let the back room know what was going on.
Moving on to our meals, I was having a delicious meal of the crab and shrimp something, and when I bit into a forkful, my tooth hit something . I figured it was a crab shell, they get in there sometimes...but upon examination, it was not shell, but more plastic of unknown i.d. or origins. Â We quietly flagged the waitress over, and explained our discovery. Â She took no time at all to offer us a new meal, discuss the situation with her manager, and he immediately came over to apologize to us. Â He totally zeroed-out our meal fee-all four of us in the family-and was profusely and genuinely sorry.
So, as an update, the food was much better, the service was awesome, and the management is very sincere. Â That we were taken care of pronto, with no issues, is what makes me give them the higher star count.
Chevy's Fresh Blecccchhhh's is more like it. Started at happy hour with a severely watered down margarita. Ordered the nacho's off the happy hour menu as an appetizer - it showed up at the same time as the entrees. Of course, the entrees were not what I ordered (though the runner argued with me about this). After I sent it back to the kitchen, it came back again... and was still the wrong items in the combination.
The carnitas had more grease on it than the pimply faced kid working the fryer at your local fast food joint. I didn't make it to the car before the stomach ache began.
The one plus, was the waitress, who was very cheerful, attentive, and pleasant. She tried to get the order correct, even when the MANAGER could not.
If you have to choose, I'd actually rather go with the Taco Bell down the block and a brown bagged bottle of tequila. More authentic, as well. Actually, the Del Taco around the corner beats them both.
Hmm...don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon. At first glance, it was spacious and seemed to be like your typical Chevy's Americanized Tex Mex joint.
My friend and I ordered off their lunch special menu. We both got the taco salad with grilled chicken. On the menu it looked pretty good with sizable portions. Once we got it however, this is when it went downhill.
The amount of each item: chicken, beans, guacamole, cheese, etc. was paltry compared to the photo. I was hungry too! And then the worst part, no actually the worst part is coming up, I tasted the avocado and it had this rancid feel. You know how it kind of tingles in your mouth (not in a good Pop Rocks way, but in a way that makes you go bleccchh) and the taste is a bit "off"? Well this was it.
I tried to find our waiter, but he was making drinks behind the bar. WTF? So I waited until he made various margaritas for customers and then caught his eye as I was waving to have him come over. I told him about the yucky, rotten avocado and he asked if I wanted anything else, but I just wanted to go by this point.
So then the manager comes by.
Mgr: So tell me what happened.
Me: I bit into this avocado and it is rancid.
Mgr (looking doubtful): Really? Well, that's too bad. You're still going to pay for it.
Me (getting annoyed): Well, I'm going to write up about this! (Silent thanks to http://Yelp.com)
Mgr: No, I'm just kidding. We'll take care of it.
Seriously, that was the conversation. The whole incident left a bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended.
I am not a fan of "americanized" mexican food. Being what it is, it might be really good - but I don't enjoy this style of watered-down mexican food. ICK!
Not worth it to go for drinks either, because their top-shelf you have to pay a lot extra for (which is common many other places, too). Also, the Auburn area law enforcement officers are pretty aggressive, if you drive after a few drinks. However, if you look like an upper-class white person, they probably won't pull you over in Auburn, unless you are blatantly ignoring laws.
Drunken rednecks hooted at Placer County beauty pageant contestants sitting on one table. Really. Our server was cool (and cute) and made fun of the beauty pageant chicks.
This Chevys is located next to a movie theater (hence "Movie Theater Chev") with a silhouetted cowboy on the exterior wall and a Chevys IS Fresh Mex sign. However, inside it was one big boring room, and the rusty things (usually on a ledge hanging over the tables threatening to fall and maim people) were scarce.
The salsa was spicy but didn't taste quite right, and the chips were greasy and salty (not a good thing). The cactus chip was poofy and strange but good.
My Ice Cream Baked Potato was good.
They gave me a souvenir rubber ducky with sombrero so that was a plus.
