The only experiences I have had with this particular Chevy's have always been negative. This is only the 2nd time I went there voluntarily. All the previous 5-6 times were for business events, birthdays, etc.
The food is notoriously bad at this location, I have been to other Chevy's in other areas of California and Nevada and the food and the vibe was night and day compared to this place.
This was just the other night, Cinco de Mayo evening where some of my husband's former band mates were playing outside. It was fairly early in the evening and the patio area near the stage had only a few tables occupied. Most were eating and or drinking. There were also several tables around us empty but still had not been bussed. The dirty dishes, glasses, silverware and assorted litter were still there and it was unclear for how long. The table we sat at was also still of the same unclean scenario. Probably dirtier with the remnants of a brought-in birthday cake, half-eaten slices among the Chevy's dinner ware. We sat there with the birthday guest, who was also the guitar player we came to see.
Thinking the table would be cleaned up soon, we sat there amongst the mess thinking it would be cleared of all the glasses, dishes and trash. I should have known better as a former bartender, the glasses were of various types, shot glasses, beer mugs, margarita glasses, not picked up from the guests previously. Their party was just collecting numerous glasses that weren't being removed either prior to leaving.
The table was never cleaned up while we were there for over 2 hours. A staff member took a break in the patio area, walked by the mess at least 4 times. Other staff also walked by. At one point, a messy table nearby was haphazardly cleaned up for group sitting down for dinner and to watch the band. As their group expanded with fellow table mates showing up randomly, they were given chips and salsa, and at least 2 pitchers of margaritas were sat down as well as a pitcher of beer.
At one point, I asked the same staff member on a break previously if they could bus the table. About 15 minutes later, another staff member showed up, took about 5-6 dirty glasses off the table - nothing else, he only had a serving tray and not a bin for all the dishes. He never returned for the rest of the mess, which included more glasses and dirty dishes - ever.
I only live less than 2 miles from this Chevy's - almost within walking distance and because of all the bad experiences over the course of 14 years, I never go there.
It looks like a place that attracts drunks or people wanting to get drunk on the cheap.
How this place wasn't on the chopping block list baffles me. The service is horrible, the food I have had was mediocre at best, but I would never think of expecting a 'real' Mexican meal.
I doubt it will change; it's gross to sit for over 2 hours in the midst someone else's dirty dishes is deplorable.
Maybe I wasn't going to eat then but it really sealed the deal never to go there again. I am a big tipper, not a difficult guest. I would never recommend this dump.
I ended up checking this place out because the bar across the street told me I had to leave. I came to this place just in time for happy hour which is perfect because I didn't feel like stopping drinking. Â Today was one of those days I needed to forget about things. Â The bartender was really cool to talk too an he kept bringing chips an salsa which I thought was really cool. He definitely transformed Me into the fun drunk instead of the emotional drunk with great convo. I had a coupon so I ate really good an the happy hour margaritas are real cheap. Â I had at least 6 . I am not quite sure how many
Exactly cuz after 6 all I remember is taking a nap. I had some good times. Â Then I sobered up an watched gangster squad.
A restaurant like this is good, coming with your friends that usually make you bust a gut is better.
Although their numbers are dwindling in California, this particular location has withstood the cuts and pushes out some authentic and tasty dishes. This time around we opted for an appetizer sampler and their Hat Trick which is a combo meal deal where you get to choose soup or salad, an entree and a mini dessert for $11.99!!
While the salad and dessert were a manageable size, the entree was ridiculously GINORMOUS!! I couldn't get over how huge the Chicken Burrito platter I ordered was and the sentiment was echoed by the others at our table. I actually couldn't finish the whole thing!!!
Our waiter was very patient with us and handled our table with speed and efficiency. Overall it was a great visit and I think it's going to become a part of my crew's circuit.
The service at this restaurant, especially in the cantina from Eric - is amazing. Â Very efficient!! Different from the Sacto Chevy's which was just bad. Â Drinks are good and ample and food is fine. It makes no pretense about being Mexican. Â It's "Tex-Mex". Â The light chips and salsa is the best. Â The excellent service trumps any food shortcomings.
Review Source:Called in a 'to go' order for lunch, order was wrong, my $8+ salad was wimpy at best with 4 chunks of chicken a cup of lettuce hard bacon, no blue cheese. You can get a WAY better salad at Wendy's for half as much. 2 stars for chips and salsa otherwise none. Â My friend had to go to del taco to get something to eat because they messed up the order and she had nothing to eat.
Review Source:I normally like Chevys, but this visit was not the greatest. Our waitress was not very attentive in fact a manager had to bring out our food and I had to ask several times for refills on my water.
The shrimp and crab enchilada was great, however the crispy lemon shrimp taco was awful. -at least it was deducted from the bill.
This is my favorite place to eat. It is not mexican. It is fresh mex.
What to choose here: Of course the chips and salsa. I do not think I have had better. Then the fajitas with the fresh tortillas. We usually choose a fajita that is more than one item, such as steak and shrimp. We recently chose a four item fajita and picked grilled veggies. I was surprised at how good they were. For beans I recommend the ala charra (if I spelled that right..sorry), Those are the pinto beans. Very good. My family likes the corn side dish (again, eat here all the time and do not know what it is called. Guess I do not read the menu anymore). The pineapple coconut margarita is a fresh fruit margarita in some months. It is not on the menu, but can be ordered any time. I cannot say enough about them. I try to go to the bar during happy hour since they are cheaper then. They are to die for. Most of the wait staff is excellent. I have been coming here for so many years I do not recall. Recently I did have a waitress in the bar who was not very good. She did not attend to us very quickly and did not refill the chips. I am such a regular customer that I will not let this one server ruin my experience. I do not think management is aware of this problem with some of the newer service people since management regularly steps in and helps out. Since other people are having this experience, and I know it is unusual, I will put in a customer suggestion next time I go.
They advertise no canned foods. The management came and offered my kids a tour of their restaurant. I did not go in the kitchen, but my kids came back very impressed and happy.
Oh, and the final straw for us to make this my favorite place of all time...Five years ago my boyfriend left his wallet in the bathroom. The waiter Alex, who still works there, found it and brought it to him with everything intact. He easily could have emptied it and pretended he did not see it.
Not sure what the deal was when I was here two weeks ago but I sat down with two other friends at the happy hour area during their 2-8 PM hh and, I swear, it took them 20+ minutes for a waiter to finally come around and take our orders. Â The place was hardly packed. I tried making eye contact with a few of the servers who were gladly walking by serving surrounding tables but nope. Even looked at one of the gentlemen who seemed like he was the manager on clock.
I would give them 1 star for their utterly horrible service that day. But 1 additional star for their Strawberry margarita, which was delicious and strong. At a cost of $4 each.
I just ordered 2 lunches to go.  Talk about inadequate servings---these were them.  I'm not a big guy, at 175 lbs, but after I ate my 2 taco/ beans and rice dish for  $11 per meal, I was glad I could get home an hour later to eat more, to feel like I'd eaten lunch. The food came in a huge plastic tray, with little slots for the beans and rice, which holds an amount equal to a child's serving.  Definitely not  a "bang -for-the -buck" meal at Chevy's.  Next time I'll spend the $11 bucks across the street at Del Taco where I know I'll be plenty full, and the flavors will be just as good.
Review Source:You know what you're getting every time. Decent food that doesn't break your budget. You don't go there expecting authentic Mexican food. The upside for us is that my wife and I can eat fajitas, enchiladas, etc while the kids get their chicken nuggets. Between the chips and the nuggets, this is a perennial favorite  of my kids.
Review Source:In the past this Chevy's service was so slooow. But a few years ago they started giving their cutomers surveys for awhile. There must have been others who felt that their service was slow because after that the service became much better! I appreciate that they took the time to get feedback from their customers and then fix the customer's complaints.
I like Chevy's because it's a fun place to go. Â The food is good. The servers are friendly and a few even remember us when we come in, which is always nice. Their Happy Hour is great because you can get appetizers, which are the same size as a regular meal, for 1/2 off. I loved their tortillias and could make a whole meal out of them! Last time we went, however, they started making them differently. The new ones are good, but not as good as the old ones.
So to sum it up:
Good food. Good prices. Good service. Fun. Mama like!
The only good thing about this particullar restaurant is that.....um pretty much NOTHING!!! the service was horrible. I asked the server about a specific plate and he answered me with im not mexican i dont eat mexican food. First of all I never asked him what nationality he was, even though he looked mexican...he never answered my question. So i decided to just go for it since i couldnt get a opinion from the server. After he took our order he was gone...literally he didnt go back untill we were done with our meal, didnt even go to our table once to ask how everything was going, even though we were the only customers they had. The food was just alright, and even though we wanted some of their desserts, we were already turned off by the service, we just wanted to get out of there. I dont know what is wrong with these people at chevys, they just all walk around talking to each other instead of taking care of their customers.
Review Source:You AIN'T had no decent salsa until you've had Chevy's salsa! Â Now, I gotta admit, this place is in the "other" "Mo-town" - so it's kinda hard to find a place to love that doesn't close by your next visit. Â Nonetheless, in the 16 years my man has had me up in Mo-town, I JUST took my kiddies with my girl Salli. Â LOVE IT. Â Yes - it is a chain but many of the staff here have been here for years. Â It is great Mexican food without all the grease. Â We got seated by the flour tortilla maker which made it easier to enjoy my meal because my kids were otherwise entertained. Â They have great margaritas and I had this salad that they toss table-side and it has avocado, pumpkin seeds, great dressing (got that on the side) and, as per usual, I'm not sure what else because I didn't totally pay attention while I was gushing about it!
A must do if ever in MOdesto!
if you're looking for mexican food and you go to chevys you need to be committed to a mental institution. that being said, there are people who love chevys. Â ive seen the look in their eyes when even the word is uttered, and ive experienced 'happy birthday' chevys songs when it was clearly not anyone at the tables' birthday.
im a fan of good food and good mexican food, and chevys provides neither. Â their skillets are impressive though, with all that food smoking and stuff. Â ive heard they have good margaritas, at the very least they're strong. Â I like the tortilla machine also. Â And the balloons.
The chips would get me in the door. Â But the food never seems to hit me. Â Okay, it does hit me, as I experience a sensation not unlike bloating when I partake of their food here. Â Straight up, this is watered down food for people who like Mexican food but are afraid to eat it as it may be too "ethnic" for them. Â So it is bland and non-threatening. Â They have fresh made tortillas, which earns them one star, and the chips, earning the other. Â But they are crazy busy and make bank, so I guess I'm in the dissenting opinion here.
Review Source:I am not found of their food, it just doesn't taste like authentic mexican food to me. I truthfully have not tried anything I really had to have but their fajitas are good enough to eat if someone else suggests we go.
The chips and salsa however, is the BEST!! Â And I celebrated my 16th birthday there with my girlfriends back in high school and got the royal treatment, sombrero and all as they sang to me and I pretended to be embarrassed and surprised while secretly loving the attention. Oh stop, please! You dont have to "keep singing, keep singing..keep singing" hee hee
I love the fresh chips at Chevy's. Â They are so light and thin which is my fave style of chip I might add. Â My baby nephew loves watching El Machino pop out the tortillas. Â I kind of like watching it to.
I usually order the chicken fajitas which are super filling and I can never finish it off. Â That could be because I've completely stuffed my face with chips and salsa. Â By the time my food is ready I'm so full! Â I'm not apologizing, I'm just saying. Â ;)
So I'm going to let you all in on the 'proper way' to enjoy Chevy's. Yes, there is a way to avoid the lackluster service, the crappstastic food, and just enjoy what Chevy's is really good for. It's called the Cantina! Honestly I think Chevy's food is pretty much not of any quality. However, I do enjoy their chips and salsa, and the margaritas oooohhh-yeah! Their happy is hour is probably one of the best around. They don't mess around with those 'half-size' apps. For $3 you can get a FULL size order of buffalo wings, fajita nachos, flautas etc. For another $3 you can also enjoy a margarita or tall refreshing beer. Really there's no point in setting foot on their dining room floor, go straight to the bar area. Service is much better and your in and out in a flash! The fiance and I can get in and out for about $20. Not too shabby. Final Verdict 3.5 stars
Review Source:For some reason, I've never really gotten along with Chevys. The food is either bland or just doesn't taste good and the service can be frustrating at times. You think that could be it?
And the strange part is that it manages to be busy enough to be so loud, too. The atmosphere is harsh and loud, creating an uncomfortable environment for eating.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that there are better Mexican restaurants than Chevys, and some of them are even fairly close to this one in Modesto. Do yourself a favor and visit one of them instead.
