All across America, there are roadside cafes, often family-run, which cater mostly to the locals. Â They have similar menus and layouts, but the food and service can range from lousy to excellent. Â This is one of the really good ones. Â They are open for breakfast and lunch, and the menu is familiar to any North American -- eggs and pancakes, burgers and BLTs, etc. Â You know you're on the Eastern Shore because crab cakes, soft shelled crab and crab soup were available, too.
We stopped for breakfast. Â Service was prompt and friendly. Â Prices were very reasonable. Â The place was not fancy, but rather functional with homey touches -- Â the local art-for-sale and the salt and pepper shaker collection were charming.
The food was what your mom would make you for breakfast, if you'd come home after a long absence and mom really knew how to cook. Â Pancakes the right shade of brown. Â Homemade sausages. Â Eggs done perfectly and not swimming in grease. Â Home fries done right and spiced right. Â
We stopped there because the parking lot had a fair number of cars and left with smiles on our faces. Â We knew it was going to be a good day.
