The service was very sweet and the waitresses very attentive (we were the only ones in there).  I was saddened that their liquor license was still pending because I was so hoping for a pitcher of Sangria. The food was just ok...nothing I would write home about. The presentation was beautiful but It was flavorless for authentic Mexican food. My 9 year old didn't care for the tacos. She said the meat was too hard. My husbands chicken and salsa verde bland. My shrimp was yummy...but how can you mess up shrimp with peppers and onions? :( We most likely won't go back again.

What authentic Mexican place serves burritos with a slice of American cheese across the top?  I admit I chose take out over dine in and I would have said something had I known. Overall I was fairly unimpressed and likely won't be back again. That's rough considering I live about 8 seconds from this place.

Forget the authentic argument; as a white guy from central LI, if it tastes good and I don't feel like garbage afterwards, it's good food. Their tostada (sans beef for $10.86 to go) was the real deal, a fresh, clean, well-portioned meal; unfortunately, even following positive reviews by the Times and Newsday, the big space was dead during the dinner rush on a nice Thursday. The location is kind of awkward (across from the FedEx center) and would do very well with a large al fresco space for the drinking crowd, but the food did the trick on my visit.

I decided to check out Cinco de Mayo because a couple of the reviews said "authentic Mexican". Clearly those people are not Mexican.

I am Mexican. I spent my childhood in Mexico and my teenage years in Los Angeles, so you can see I've been spoiled when it comes to my people's food.

    I ordered 3 tacos.

Taco 1: Chorizo, It was served cold with guacamole. Chorizo is should be served with red chili sauce. The taste was so/so
Taco 2: Al pastor, was again served cold with guacamole. It was clearly cooked in a pan with oil not slow cooked over an open fire. The taco was so greasy, I had to spit it out in my napkin.
Taco 3: Tripe, served with guacamole. In all fairness I did not eat it, since I was so grossed out by the Al pastor taco. My complaint with this taco would be that I ordered it extra crispy and it looked under cooked.

One last thing, the services is the worst. I ordered a Mexican coke and I ended up with an American Pepsi. The service is slow.

So far the worst Mexican food I've had on Long Island maybe even my life.

Based on NEWSDAY's review, my husband was very enthusiastic about eating there, so we dined there on Sunday. My husband has hemochromatosis so he cannot eat foods high in iron or cooked on cast iron. I asked the waitress to ask the Chef which items we could order NOT cooked on cast iron. When she returned she indicated he said EVERYTHING is cooked on cast iron. "That's impossible" I responded and asked to speak to him. He indicated that only the food described as "grilled" was cooked on cast iron, everything else on stainless steel. (Strike 1.)  We ordered a few taco appetizers, and although not very impressed/they were not offensive. My husband was uneasy about his choices, so to be safe, he ordered chicken soup. I ordered steamed chicken with rice and beans.  The soup was 'ordinary'; nothing special, and had noddle shaped chicken strips floating in what appeared to be store-bought chicken broth. The beans were so spicy that I was unable to eat my meal.  My husband and I switched plates and neither of us finished our meals. (Strike 2.)
The food is 'ordinary'/nothing special, and certainly not an accurate representation of Mexican cuisine, as we are accustomed.  The waitresses (two) appear lost and unconnected.  After she brought the soup, it took a few minutes to catch her attention to ask for a soup spoon.  (Strike 3.)
The atmosphere is cold.  The service is less than acceptable. For the future I will not trust another review from NEWSDAY'S Joan Reminick.  Very, very disappointing.

Overall, not bad, really. Food was good and prices were reasonable. I would go 3 stars based on the food but service was a little inconsistent. We had to remind the server to bring out one of the appetizers. When we ordered dessert and coffee, we had the coffee for close to 15 minutes before the dessert arrived. And I'm pretty sure the decaf was instant. No liquor license yet so you can BYOB. One of our friends made a great sangria so overall we had a good time.

This authentic Mexican restaurant opened up in the building formerly occupied by The Village Crossroads, which has been closed for several years.  The ambiance of the place is a little odd, Sort of $0.99 store deco and lime green paint accents. The waitstaff is super friendly and accommodating.  The menu is authentic Mexican food and not your Americanized crap, so be prepared for something different..this is not Moe's, Chipotle, Taco Bell etc. You can actually get tongue, tripe or other beef body parts not typically served in your run of the mill spots.  I ordered the horchata (rice, milk, cinnamon, vanilla beverage) which was flavorful but had way too much ice in it.  We ordered five tacos to share, a couple fish tacos, pineapple seasoned pork tacos, and grilled beef tacos.  The pineapple seasoned pork tacos were my favorite, although they could be a little juicier.  Tacos come in traditional double corn tortillas, no flour tortilla here, so expect a different, grainier tortilla with more flavor.  Overall, I would return, hopefully order a couple 'ritas and a few tacos. I think there are some growing pains that will be worked out soon.

Two of us arrived on Friday evening. I had read a review in Newsday and was curious to try authentic Mexican food. We walked into the main dining area and was underwhelmed by the decor. It so lacked of ambiance it took from the experience.  My wife said it looked like an establishment that put up a few things on the wall to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Could they also please not run Channel 12 news on both big screen TV's. It seriously detracts from the experience. I had a burrito for an appetizer. It was filling but I felt the need to ask for some hot sauce to spice it up but that's just me. I had a flattened steak with black beans and white rice. The steak was kind of tough to cut. You can bring your own wine. The staff was fine. All in all I was disappointed. I want to come back and try some of the food the Newsday reviewer liked. I think it will be more likely at lunch. I hope other reviewers have a better experience because I would really like this restaurant to succeed for the good of the owner and the community.

We went when they first opened.  The food was great but the service was a painful experience.  I think they planned on having a mostly Hispanic clientelle and there was a serious ESL communication gap.  Then again, the food was great and the prices reasonable.
Went again this week and the service issue has been addressed.  Overall excellent and convenient neighborhood place.  It's BYOB now but I keep forgetting to bring some Dos Equis!!

Good Mexican food, nice authentic tacos, I wish they had more of a Classic Mexican selection of items. Very friendly service but a little scattered (expected because its new). Love the house made sauces and yucca fries. Pork was very moist and flavorful. But espresso and flan needed help very dry. Don't serve flan with raspberry sauce :( I can see we're the " Taco Bell" crowd would not like this. I thought it was good despite the dessert. I will come again.

Very good, very authentic Mexican food!

This place seems to have had a bit of a rough start since opening about a month ago (as indicated by the negative reviews below) but the food is very good. Please note, this is authentic Mexican food. So the menu may seem odd or unfamiliar if you're expecting typical Americanized Mexican, but, give it a try because the food is great!

I've eaten here twice now in the month they've been open. Both the food and the service were better the 2nd time, though the service still needs some refinement. People seem a little unclear who should do what. So we had multiple people come by the table and ask us the same questions. This was easy to overlook, though, because we got everything we needed very promptly. The atmosphere is a bit dull but, again, the food is enough to make up for that. My only complaint is that they charge for softdrink refills.

So give it a try. The food is worthy the bumps in the road and I expect them to be worked out over time.

(Note, I haven't had the burrito the other two reviews complained about. But try the tacos. They have around 15 different tacos and the 4 different I've had were all great)

This place makes Taco Bell look like a 5 star restaurant. The worst mexican food I've ever experienced. The pork tasted like leather, the ground beef was as if I were chewing on a tire. The service was horrible, nobody spoke English and it took 20 mins to get a check that was wrong. After arguing with the owner we got up and left.

After long months of awaiting the grand opening of Cinco de Mayo, the best way to describe our experience is (as my husband put it) "a total suck fest". When we walked in, the restaurant looked like it was not finished yet and most of the patrons looked quite angry (& hungry).  We sat down and attempted to order, but our waitress did not speak English....At all. After about 45 minutes of waiting for our food and hearing the others around us complaining about frozen burritos and not getting served, we were done...and still hungry, so we left.

I just went in for a Burrito but it was the best I've had.  Service was at a normal pace and courteous.  I enjoyed the spacious rooms since many restaurants your sitting right behind or next to someone.
