Pros: good location, good people-watching if you sit at one of the tables outside/on the sidewalk, amazing fresh-baked bread, decent portion size, solid service.
Cons: expect a wait (especially in the summer), and you're paying to be in Newport (meaning the prices here seem somewhat inflated).
Our party was in a bit of a rush, so we told our waiter we wanted to eat and pay the bill fairly quickly. Despite the restaurant being packed and our waiter looking after many tables, he had the food and the bill delivered with haste, which was great.
The Boom Boom Room is worth it for some people watching laughs on Friday and Saturday nights. I think you can definitely guarantee yourself to have a good time here.
As far as the food goes, I'm a fan of this place. The service is attentive, very good waitstaff here. Great place for lunch. It has a nice bright ambiance, and obviously nautical decor-- however it's not ostentatious. Definitely fits the place well. As far as lunch menu selections, it is easy to find something to appeal to whatever you may be in the mood for. Good selection of salads, sandwiches, and burgers. I've tried the gazpacho here, very tasty and good on a hot summer day!
This place is always jammin' so we wanted to see what it was all about. So very busy, so we were afraid of getting horrible service. Not so. We sat at the bar, and were well taken care if. I had the seafood linguini which had an Asian flair. Awesome! Â My boyfriend had penne with chicken and mushrooms in a cream sauce which he loved. "Newport Water" drink was very tasty! We didn't stay for dessert because some self-absorbed b!tch took my boyfriends bar stool when he stood up to stretch!! Â Unbelievable! But meal and otherwise was quite nice!
Review Source:The Clarke Cooke House is in the middle of a tourist area, has a great layout for a restaurant, is dog friendly, and an attentive staff...and we really enjoyed our food.
I could write a lot...but, I'll keep this review short.
A very nice visit! Â Everyone was nice and the manager came around and asked us if we enjoyed everything...I liked that a lot. Â He was friendly, concerned and didn't linger longer than her needed to be (near perfect)!
I forgot my credit card at the restaurant and I called back (I was on my way home) and we talked to a "hostess?" and asked if I left my credit card there. Â She took her number and said she'd call us back, Â She did call back quickly; however, I really don't think she put any effort into looking, Â
So, I called back the next day and asked for the manager. Â How lucky I was, he answered the phone...and he was very nice. Â Told him the situation and my name...and he said....I think I remember seeing your card. Â In moments he found my card...and then passed me off to a hostess who took my address and is mailing my card back to me!
There was what I think was a small misstep; however, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt--the manager was awesome.
Suggest you stop at your first chance...and give The Clarke Cooke House a try! Â You won't be disappointed!
This place is great. So many places to choose from in newport but I have to say this was my favorite place overall that I visited. We waited about 30 mins for a table but we waited at the middle level bar so although I was starving the time  went fast people watching and what not. If we would have had to wait any longer we were going to eat at the bar but, we were seated and got a window table that was beautiful. I got to see a little bit of the sunset and I got to see some boats going out. It couldn't think of a nicer atmosphere. Our waitress was lovely. Knowledgeable about any question we had. There was a lot of seafood on the menu (hello is newport) but I had the chicken because I don't eat seafood. It was excellent and the portion was very nicely siZed.
Review Source:The Clarke Cooke House is definitely a staple in Newport. Â It's a well known and historic place, located right downtown on Bannister's Wharf. Â The place is pretty big, with three floors for dining (two main areas and one private area upstairs). I went during restaurant week, which offers cheaper prices to attract people to try their restaurant. Â The food was veryyyy good. Â I had crab cakes to start and a chicken entree, both which were outstanding. Â The Snowball in Hell dessert was very tasty as well. Â The place is very pricey and draft beer selection is pretty weak, which are a few downsides. Â This place can also attract a snobby, yachting crowd during the summer. Â I've seen some obnoxious people here, but other than that, it's a cool spot.
Review Source:Made it to the Boom Boom Room for some dancing. We got in despite the line waiting (not sure why but I think I was with the ambassador of Newport fun). The DJ was pretty good but moved songs too fast. There must have been 40 bachelorette parties in town. 5 were at Clark Cooke House. I dance with 3 brides to be! Loud and fun.
Review Source:Debated between 3 or 4 stars. 4 because we ended up here twice, 3 because the second time we were kind of forced by winds, rains and no where else to find a seat or table. Yep, Memorial Day weekend 2013 - the coldest, rainiest weekend EVER in all Memorial Day weekend history for Newport. Confident of it, every local was kind enough to apologize for the weather! As for the spot itself, first night was mussels, frites and the cheese plate. So-so. Mussels were not given much love but the cheese plate (while small) was diverse and the cocktails were good - espresso martini and local beers. Our server was super kind and attentive. Night 2; babysitter so we were out and about in the torrential rain for my birthday. Top floor bar which put us in the company of locals and regulars; which we loved. Calamari was good, split a burger and again the meal was a 3/4 but the bartender was fun and kind. This place is where everyone tells you to go. It makes sense; it's in the middle of all the action - rain or shine. I found that the meals were better elsewhere but the ambiance, servers and location are worthy of a visit.
Review Source:Having lived in Newport for many years, I've ignored this wharf spot as a tourist trap. However, I ended up here for a birthday celebration - so , I must review.
Location is fun; In the summer might be a little crazy and hectic, though. It's right on the water and the window views are very nice.
Food is pricey. I guess if it makes you feel good about spending more than you need to on average food, then so be it. I had the Sesame Tuna Salad and 2 miniature soda's. I left paying ~$40. The salad was good; I enjoyed it, but it was a little too expensive for my taste.
Service is horrible. Starting with the hostess. Blank stare in her eyes and more worried about talking with co-workers than hostessing. I asked he point blank 2x where I could find the restroom and she just ignored me and said that our waitress would be there shortly. I hated the waitress. On the surface she appeared to be nice and friendly, but it soon became apparent that her game was to compliment jewelry hairstyles and handbags of the attendees to ingratiate herself and get a tip. I'm old fashioned - you get a tip based on the way that you do your job. I'm not interested in being your new best friend. She was sloppy, inattentive and when the end came she was asked to separate the ticket. Her response: "Itemize it? I don't have the time to do that." Guess what? It's your job.
I'm unimpressed and disappointed. I won't eat here again.
We were happy to be able to get seats here on Friday night while all others restaurants nearby were full. (were a little bit suspicious though because of this fact)
The hostess was very rude and ignorant - totally agree with the other yelper  "Never greeted with a smile at the door."
Good thing that we got a great window seat with nice view, not far from the cozy fireplace. Our server was very friendly and helpful.
The food:
Mussels = very fresh and flavorful!
Sautéed Lobster in the shell = Great!
Filet de Sole = I really liked this dish!! It has caramelized onions in there and the fish was very tender! It was very tasty! Love it!
Dessert was good too..forgot the name..fresh pineapples and berries with orange gelato in a martini glass.
Probably will come back for seafood again.
Visited this winter with my husband and it was very cozy. Candle light, fire place, white linen type of place.
Menu was a little pricy but we expected that. Pasta is about $26 a dish, lobster meals start at $35.
Although pricier, the food and service was excellent. They always poured our wine and checked on us consistently.
Great for a nice romantic dinner where you can dress more casually if you want.
What a great location. Â Ask for a table near the bar overlooking the water. Â Wait staff runs hot and cold - from very rude and inattentive to ultra courteous and responsive. Â Never greeted with a smile at the door,
Hamburger ordered medium rare -they killed it...well done but cooked another one. Â A shame since we finished our lunch before our guest did. Â And the fries...I asked if they ran out and was abruptly told there are 4oz. for all. Â C'mon man, Potatoes are $10 for a 50 lb. bag. Â The potato famine was in Ireland.
I have been there several times and have left strongly dis-satisfied about half of the time. Mostly with the rude service.
The Clarke Cooke House is one of Newport gems. Delicious food, good service, great views of the harbor. The restaurant is located at Bannisters Wharf in the heart of Newport. Good for lunch or dinner, not sure if they close for the winter. The crowd is a bit old, but still fun. Definitely a must when you're visiting Newport!
Tip: ask for the "Snowball in hell" for dessert!
What a pleasant place for a Sunday brunch with live piano music.
They offer a prix fixe menu which includes the entree, coffee, mimosa, and chocolate mousse for dessert for $21.95. I opted for RI johnnycakes with smoked salmon and my wife the brioche french toast with bacon, all very good!
Well worth a drive down to Newport on a lazy Sunday.
We went for the raw bar and dinner.
Their oysters were okay, the ones at the Port are better.
I had the seafood pasta dish with an Asian dressing lightly tossed in...it was amazing. Â The kind of good that you can't stop eating even when you are full. Â My husband had lobster and it was just ok. Â I give them 3 stars because I feel they are over priced. Â
They are dog friendly which is a nice bonus for us...
My fiance and I have been here three times over the past four years and each experience was unique. The first time was just for a dessert on a night of restaurant hopping, the other was for a birthday dinner during the dead of winter, and finally a few days ago for a drink. This place is great for atmosphere and for menu selection.
The only downfall to the Clarke Cooke House is the prices and sometimes the wait to get a table. (We paid $20 bucks for 2 cocktails). However, it's Newport so you have to expect to splurge a little.
My experience with an actual meal is only based on the one time we had dinner here, but it was a great meal and we still talk about the experience years later.
You may know Cooke as a place to eat, but I know Cooke as a place to party and dance your ass off with all the preppy locals. Honestly, I felt like I was right at home, seeing that I'm from Palm Beach where the highbrow preppy environment is hard to beat!
We stopped in around 10:30 pm after a lovely dinner at White Horse Tavern. Our waiters words were "people like you go to Cooke." Whatever that meant, we took his advice and had a blast.
Cooke's is huge. They have a basement which is dark, blaring top 40 dance hits and it was packed full of young people drinking, dancing and sweating in the warm summer weather. I spent most of my night down here, lol.
On the first floor there is a live band where my sister and all the middle aged people sipped cocktails and chatted the night away.
On the top floor was background music and slivers.
If you want to party with the locals, go here. You won't regret it AND you'll likely get dragged to an after party in some huge mansion down the street- don't ask ;)
I will admit that when I perused the menu I almost left to go to the mooring. Â Nothing jumped out at me, but after my meal I am grateful I let my friends talk me into staying.
I had the filet of sole, and the flavor combination of onions, spinach, hazelnuts and capers was very surprisingly well suited. Â My friend had the oysters and loved them. Â The BF got the seafood linguine which was divine. Â The asian sauce really made the dish.
Been many times to this restaurant for lunch but first to write a review! Â
I used to work in Newps and typically only made it down for lunch, much like it was for me today. Â I was with two other work colleagues and we had a couple hours to relax. If you want a casual atmosphere, ask to sit in the bar area where it looks out over the harbor and inlet. Â We were one of the first lunch customers which meant our server was very attentive to us. We started out with a scallop appetizer between the three of us and it was to DIE for. Nothing filling but could have been a lunch portion for one person.
I ordered the burger with all the fixings, and my colleagues ordered a cod special and mussels. We all licked our plates clean!  We were offered dessert, and since work was paying....why not?!  We got cream brûlée, indian pudding, and somet chocolate dish in a goblet. We could not have been more satisfied with the food and service.
I've also experienced Sunday brunch here with family and always impressed. Once you go for moire finer dining the prices get a bit up there but for a moderately priced lunch, with lots of seaside flare and good cocktails, give CCH a solid shot.
This establishment was recommended by the Inn we stayed at in town. However, we never ended up eating. We were out for our anniversary and asked to be seated at a,good table. Unfortunately, the host and manager refused and sat us at a table not as good. The very next couple that came in asked to be seated at the same table and they were!
To make things worse, we inquired with the host as to why and he lied that the other couple had reservations. We asked them to be be sure, and they most certainly didn't.
We asked to be compensated for the rudeness of the staff, but they would not do it and we left. We ended up eating at another restaurant on the wharf and had a great time despite our discouraging encounter. BE CAREFUL OF THE POSSIBILITY OF RUDENESS if you decide to eat at the Cooke House.
Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the company, maybe it was the bartender... whatever it was, I had the best damn time I've ever had in Newport at Clarke Cooke House. The best.
My friend and I were in search of oysters after a long, fun day spent walking the streets of Newport in the hot July sun. But not just any oysters: local, refreshing and perfectly sized -- that's my criteria. Also, we wanted to be comfortable, sit in the open air and feel a bit of a breeze. After eyeballing a handful of places, we meandered to Clarke Cooke House and found an ideal spot at the bar.
The bar and restaurant are really very beautiful. They're old-school -- you can feel the 1920's/1930's vibe with the painted tongue-and-groove walls, mahogany bar, large ceiling fans and glass light fixtures. The windows are completely open to the fresh air blowing off the bay, and the multi-leveled structure is set up to allow for different atmospheres and scenes in each room, which is pretty cool. It was the bar scene that was just right for us, our beers and multitude of bivalves.
We were lucky that a dude named Tucker was bartending that afternoon. He was fun, charming, smooth, quick with a drink and very polite. He even asked our names, struck up interesting and lively conversation and treated us like princesses for the almost two hours we sat there, gorging ourselves on local oysters that were DYNO-MITE and cold IPAs. Fabulous.
When the conversation turned to our dinner plans, we decided we wanted to do a shellfish smorgasbord back at home. Tucker told us where to go to get the seafood - it was just across the dock from the restaurant. He actually let us get up from the bar, leave our drinks and plates of eaten oysters to go get the shellfish before the dock closed without having paid the bill. What a guy! Of course, we came back, had a few more oysters and he even put our bounty on ice for us. Awesome. It's service like that that makes all the difference in the world, kids. When they treat you like a person rather than a tab, it makes my day.
I love this place. It's old-school, unpretentious and totally chill. I've found my go-to spot in Newport, kids. Hooray!
I've come to Clark Cooke House many times over the years and have always enjoyed myself. Â
It's become something of a summer ritual to dine here although it's open the year round. Â I love the open air feel of the main dining room and my favorite spot is to sit at the bar.
This is another place in an 18th century historic building nicely preseved with 3 floors for different kinds of dining.
Generally you'll find me on the Wharf Level known as the Candy Store although I'm not sure why it just isn't called the Wharf Room which would be more apt.
Nevertheless, it feels open-air and closed-in at the same time and in the best way possible.  On a hot day you feel cool and protected from the sun while being able to look out on Narragansett Bay or out on the street  with it's wide open expanses toward the front and side.
I tend to sit at the bar as I did on this latest visit. Â There's a gorgeous antique pond yacht on display there amongst the liquor bottles. The antique ones are quite collectible and this one is a beauty.
The menu has something for everyone. Â Some favorites include the mixed green field salad, chickpea crepes, the wild mushroom tartine and the Pan Bagnat. Â
While I haven't had it, at least not in recent memory, people swear this place has the best clam chowder. Â As you would expect there are lots of seafood options as well.
I love the ambiance here. Â It's got a real Newport sailing vibe versus a touristy feel. People tend to be friendly and it's easy to strike up a chat with other diners; something I love to do.
In days gone by, I've been known to spend time in the lower level Boom Boom room which is a dance club. Â
How can anyone resist a name like that? Â I was reminded that I need to return one of these evenings...Now that I've had my lunch, I do need a Boom Boom fix.
If you do go, look for the totally fun and cool bartender on the Wharf level whose name I didn't get but who's a dead ringer for a young Ted Danson.
Charming!
This is a three story restaurant where all floors have a different setting. When I was there the third floor was being renovated. Sat in the main dining room by the bar. We originally asked for the table in front of the fireplace but it was taken. We sat in front of the bar area and had a nice view of what was happening.
The place is charming, hardwood floors, different levels, dark wood and romantic in it's own way. They have a nice wine list. The waiter was training a girl and he was rushing us so he can leave. That never goes over well with me! When I anticipate this, I never give my entire order and provide my order only after I am ready to accept the next meal.
The food was good, the ambiance was nice.
I would most likely try another restaurant in the future.
I had forgotten just how good this place is.
But last Saturday night it all came back to me.
Four of us went to dinner (had a 7:00 reservation and were warmly greeted and seeted promptly). Waiter was knowledgeable and very pleasant. Cocktails to start then apps, all of which were delicious.
I had peppered tuna steak for dinner which was abso-freaking-lutely fantastic. Perfectly prepared (rare please), with a sweet and sour sherry vinegar glaze, collard greens, pancetta and allumette potatoes. HOLY COW! I loved it.
My wife had the halibut special which too was excellent but mine rocked.
Dessert was, for me, a Taylor Fladgate 20 year old tawny port. Yum!
The pace of dinner was great, the service was terrific (always there but never underfoot), the food all came out at the right temperature and at the same time for the four of us.
All in all we had a great time.
Vietnamese Style Crepe - I'm considering living off these
Wood Grilled Swordfish - nothing short of amazing
My best friend and I were hanging out in Newport when we decided to head out to find some chow. Our initial plan was to eat at the Black Pearl across the street, but since they were packed and the wait was lengthy, we decided to give Cooke House a go.
The place was busy and busting at the seams with people, and we thought, "Aw, crap! We're never gonna be able to eat." However, we were seated immediately in the upstairs bar area. The staff is great. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Newport.
An absolute MUST for dinner in Newport. This is a classic place with a great location - right on Bannister's Wharf. You can sip cocktails in the upstairs bar (less crowded) while you enjoy views of the sunset over the harbor.
Downstairs, dinner is served in three separate spaces, each a little bit different. The area by the bar is the most casual and accommodating, still offering a great menu.
But I have a serious bone to pick: my non-carnivorous bf ordered the sea bass from the daily specials after the waitress described it. There was no mention of CHORIZO.... which is kind of a big deal, no? Since it was getting dark by the time the food arrived, he didn't notice it right away and bit into a piece of sausage before realising what had happened. Luckily, I could eat his meal and he could eat mine, so we swapped. But homegirl should have spoken up about the chorizo when she was telling us about the components of the dish. Jerk.
But they make up for this confusion by being a longtime favorite and a sure thing. And they have Sancerre on the wine list, which is the secret ingredient to a happy Molly K and family.
Had a 9pm reservation this past Saturday night to celebrate my sister's URI graduation. Â We got there early and got to enjoy the upstairs bar for an hour before being seated. Â The setting for the restaurant provides a great view and a nice way to knock a few back before getting down to business. Â The downstairs bars did not seem nearly as social as the upstairs, where the waitress was very nice and the bartender's handlebar mustache was so serious I was questioning if he put something in my drink and I was just imagining it. Â I'm sure this room is great in the summer when the weather-guards are lifted and it's an open air bar.
The dining rooms all seem to have a different feel, with the first room on the main floor offering booths with pillows just off the cobblestone street, the mid-level a bit quieter and brighter, and the back room dimly lit and boistrous. Â
We sat in the back, where it was a bit tough to read the menu even with candlelight. Â They bring a specials board to your table which includes price, something I think more places should tell you with regards to menu specials. Â They leave it for you to consider as long as you need.
I went with the fam, so everyone ate some of everything, and despite a menu my father called "limiting," everything was delicious: Â portabella mushroom bruschetta (more mushroom on toast than bruschetta, but still very very good), tuna steak, steak frites (cooked to m/r perfection with delicious fries), cod & scallops, and the swordfish with cous cous special was oustanding and bursting with flavor.
Everything was generous in portions and we left zero room for desert, although what I saw being brought to everyone else looked to be worth a try.
I can't offer much more than the other Yelpers have already said - the chowder was delicious, very light - much like used to be at The Market before they tore it down. Â I had peppered tuna steak for dinner, it was cooked wonderfully and tasted delicious with a very slight breading and tasty peppercorns.
Cost, for reference:
- beer, pint: $5.50
- chowder, cup: $5.75
- peppered tuna steak: $25.95
Not ridiculous, but not everyday (for me, at least). Â Got a wonderful waterside view, the girlfriend was impressed. ;-)
I loved this place - granted Alicia C and I did stop by when there wasn't a line and we did get what the host called 'the best seat in the house,' right by a window with a lovely view of the harbor. The decor is best described as Yankee Seamen with a hint of Irish Tavern. The wooden multi-story building is full of interesting staircases and nooks and crannies and literally sits right on the dock.
Now onto the food. I had the gazpacho - which was a bit too thick and somewhat heavy on the tomato. Clearly soups are not their forte. However, we then split the beef carpaccio and the cod cakes. The beef was rare and delicious, perfectly seasoned with white truffle oil and accompanied by a salad of shaved reggiano and field greens. The cod cakes were lovely - a little bit heavy on the filler though - and came with greens that had been drizzled with this ridiculously good lemon aioli.
We had a couple sodas, which came in cute bottles, but were overpriced ($3.50!).
Overall, a great lunch with a perfect view.
This is a review just for the bar(s) - The only meals i've had at the Cooke House are appetizers, and they were just ok.
In the summer, The Cooke House has an interesting vibe. Â It's a slightly older crowd, for the most part. Â Think rich yachtsmen and their not-so-rich crews, and the bevy of well dressed women all vying for the yachtsmen. Â Add in the men who are not yachtsmen (or the like) but are pretending to be. Â If you're attractive and are still hanging around at closing time, be prepared to get invited to several imaginary Newport mansions.
I have to be in the mood for the Cooke House. Â It's packed in the summer, and there is often a line. Â I've never had to wait personally, though. Â (not that I'm connected, just a fluke I guess.) Â There are several bars, including the dance club - the Boom Boom room down in the basement. Â My friend, a local, has many many stories of drama that occurred at the Cooke House, including a girl who, for some still unknown reason, pretended to compliment her on her beautiful hair while actually putting gum in it. Â (No, my friend was not after this girl's man.) Â
On nights when the competition is especially fierce, expect to be eyed from head to toe when you walk in to the disgusting ladies room. Â Wear your designer dresses to fit in and perhaps be despised. Â BTW I'm sure the stalls are fine at the beginning of the night, but lets face it, women can be pigs. Â Clean up after yourselves! Â But I digress....
If you're at the bar you have a better chance of getting good service. Â A group of friends and I sat down in the cozy chairs near the fireplace and ordered apps and drinks. Â Our waitress (whom I recognized from previous visits) was surly. Â First she brought us someone else's much more expensive check, which we pointed out didn't belong to us. Â Then she lost the credit card we paid with, and blamed it on us. Â She lied and said she gave it back and that we must have lost it. Â And was very rude and insistent. Â One of her coworkers found it under the bar area where she ran the card. Â She didn't apologize for her mistake.
But I can let that go - when I go there I usually am going for the bar, not the food. Â Just be prepared for the show.
EDIT: Â I had my first lunch at The Cooke House this past weekend - it's off season and so was not too crazy in there. Â I had the chickpea crepe, which was delicious, and he had the cod cakes, which were just ok. Â He felt like they were all filler. Â We split a nice half bottle of Cotes du Rhone for $16, which was a bargain compared to their wines by the glass. Â A nice spot for lunch.
Lets start with the greeting we received from the brilliantly coiffed man at the door. "Two for lunch? Would you ladies like the VIP table?" And VIP it was, (although it didn't look like there was a poor seat in the house) right at the window over looking the water and warm in the sun. Divine.
No flat, weird tasting fountain soda here friends. My dining partner's diet coke came in a small old school glass bottle (guess who) and my club soda with lemon, served in a similar manner, was unsually sexy...for a beverage.
The cup of clam chowder was pretty good, a little heavy on the dill but also fantasically heavy on the clam so I can't really complain. My medium rare burger was just that. Perfection in beef form.
The atmosphere was fine dining with a casual and comfortable feel. An interesting mix of patrons. Good looking surfers at the bar, some fancy pants couples, a few families, and even Santa and Mrs Claus (Ali will back me up on that). The staff were all attentive and very kind...and adorable in their toille aprons. Even our famed host, between greeting new guests, treated the whole restaurant like you were dining in his own home.
To finish, the bill was not at all staggering, which led us to an overall completely satisfying experience!
I don't even know where to start, everything was yelpworthy about this place. We went for lunch in the offseason.
The host stepped directly out of the pages of Esquire and into the restaurant. I want to bottle him and spray him on every 20something male I know. Eau de Class. I've never seen another man pull off a brooch.
I adore all the subtle little touches. My diet coke was served in a little green glass bottle (ok, so 3$, and I doubt the refills are free), the waitstaff wear toile aprons, and the bar patrons were certainly pretty to look at.
I had a cheddar burger, served actually truly rare - I didn't even need ketchup. SO so yummy. Mad cow be damned. And, considering the opportunity to prey on tourists and charge an absurd amount, I found the bill to be relatively reasonable. Big fan.
When I was growing up in Newport the drinking age was 18 and things were much more relaxed. The bar scene was more fluid and in my opinion more fun. In those days I would only hit CCH for the disco (The Boom Boom Room) down stairs. Later on I started eating here a couple of times each summer. Over the years the food got better and better. While the Sushi is very good here I still miss the raw bar.
This is really 5 places in one. Brunch, Dinner, Drinks, Dancing they have you covered. The seafood is excellent and deadly fresh. Very inventive sushi, check the specials before ordering.
This place gets crazy in the summer, we have had issues, sent food back, had orders mixed up, did not approve of seating given us, but management has always been helpful. This is Newport, chill, and calmly state your case in a reasonable manner. High volume restaurants rarely have the quality of this establishment. They have survived while other stalwarts (Christies for one, the Original Pier for another) are now gone.
*You can break the Moet stranglehold in Newport and order Veuve Clicquot here, huzzah! They feature a Prix Fixe with 6 courses and 6 different VC's.
* Rub elbows with yacht owners and sailing types.
* disclaimer I know staff here.
update: Had dinner here last Thur 8/23/07
Two of us had Steak, filet mignon w/ demi-glace and sirloin (steak & frites), we had never eaten steak here but now I wish we had. Both pieces of meat cut with a fork! Shrimp cocktail sauce was unique and quite tasty. A perfect last open air dinner of the summer.
I came here twice in the last year and both times it was great. The first time I sat at the bar and had the steak frites over greens. The steak was excellent and the bartender was funny and attentive.
I came back for brunch the other day and had lobster eggs benedict AND the french toast (we shared). It was delicious! Plus - here's the best part - you get a free bloody mary or mimosa with your brunch! I had both.
Highly recommend. They also have an outdoor "dog bar" that you can sit and eat with your pooch. So cute!
