This review is for Ruby's- which is the outdoor section of Clementine's where we had brunch.
Got a seat outside on Sunday morning for brunch and the atmosphere is just lovely. A covered patio with lots of greenery- everything is spaced out nicely and it's just a nice place to relax in the shade (even if it is 95 degrees at 11am! :)
Their brunch menu is great- not too many options but enough good ones that you have a tough time deciding! I had the Chicken and Flapjacks and they were outrageously good. Â Came with a flavored butter (still not sure what the flavor was, but it was good!) and syrup which, of course, I put on everything. Â It was just awesome- the chicken was amazing and the pancakes were perfect - no complaints! Â My friend got the breakfast burrito which was a good size and she loved it. Â We shared a pitcher of mimosas and truly enjoyed our breakfast.
Service was good, she was busy and didn't come around very much but I know how that goes on busy Sunday mornings. Not sure what Clementine's is like inside, but Ruby's is a great spot for brunch/lunch on the patio!
I have visited Clementine's a dozen times. The food is great. The service is good sometimes the food service is a bit fast (appetizers on top of main meal). But overall a great experience. In addition, the club they have downstairs is my favorite in Harrisonburg. And the drink selection is not shabby at all.
Review Source:Although my son snarked about this being a "hipster" location--I don't know how he picked that up--I really enjoyed it. Â The artsy feel was aided by prints, paintings and sculptures all over and while the yellow lighting created a cozy vibe the bright pictures and paintings kept the mood light. Â We went in on a busy Saturday but were seated within 10 minutes or less at a low top table that gave me a great vantage point for lots of pics.
The menu was diverse enough to accommodate the three of us, including my pescatarian daughter, although if she wanted a straight vegetarian meal it would have been a little harder to accommodate. Â My son ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with bacon that he didn't allow me to take a picture of because it would have lowered his cool points somehow. Â My daughter ordered the Catfish Wrap, which I was a little surprised by since she is usually pretty picky about any non-vegetarian meal and I ordered the Bahn Mi! Â No worries, I got pics of both. Â As an appetizer we had the house made potato chips with blue cheese and ranch dressing, not to mention, we ignored any diet talk and ordered two desserts.
The appetizer wasn't much to write home about. Â Although we polished them off (we had walked all around JMU on empty stomachs so this was to be expected), I thought they would be a little more "fancified". Â I actually pictured them as homemade chips with homemade bleu cheese crumbles. Â Instead it was just a bowl of chips with another bowl for salad dressing, nothing special so choose a different app if you want something interesting.
Both of my teens polished off their meals with zero complaints. Â The feedback from my son was the sandwich was "juicy and filling" and my daughter's wrap was a huge portion. Â I'll talk specifics on the Bahn Mi since I got to enjoy it. Â If you're looking for traditional Bahn Mi, don't order this! Â If you're looking for an interesting and tasty twist...settle in! Â Black Forest Ham and Smoked Pork added a southern American vibe to this dish. Â As opposed to the crusty baguette that I'm used to it being served on, it was a soft, warm and welcoming french bread. Â The dressing or perhaps the pork made it a bit salty but the cucumber slaw offset this as well as a little extra siracha. Â
I know it's a long review but I can't forget to mention the dessert. Â My daughter ordered the Mint Chocolate Cake--she loved it but she also loved Mint Chocolate Chip Extra Gum sooooo.... Â I had the Icebox Lemon Pie which was cool, palette cleansing and delicious except for the crust which had a "bitter coffee" taste, in my opinion. Â I would have preferred it with a straight graham cracker crust but between the pie and the coulis it was a nice treat.
I could picture myself in Clementines with my daughter on a weekend college visit, enjoying conversation and good food so for the ambiance as much as the food--4 stars!
Yum! As a student at JMU, I like to know a few places around town to recommend to visiting friends and family. So glad I found this place! The BLAT was delicious, and my vegetarian mom had tons of options and wound up being delighted with her salad. Great atmosphere-- we lingered for a long time after our meal just chatting because it was so comfortable in there. Definitely a good place to try for a simple, tasty lunch.
Review Source:I really liked this restaurant for lunch. It had a cool vibe with artwork and exposed brick wall.
The sandwiches were really tasty and menu selection quite large for burgers/wraps/sandwiches (and all around $7.99 or $8.99). The freshly home made chips were tasty and nicely salted. some chips were a bit dark though. I got the avocado, turkey, bacon sandwich. The bread was great and two large half sandwiches came with the fries.
I got iced tea but he never came around to ask if i wanted refills. so docking some points in service but the food was super tasty and did i mention, i really like the place! The bathroom is a must visit. I feel like i can stay there all afternoon..
For dessert, I got the chocolate mint cake. it was basically a scoop of mint candy (york patty consistency) on top of a regular chocolate cake. but it was a good moist cake... so i didn't mind that it wasn't incorporated.
Yes. How surprised was I to find Clementine's in Harrisonburg, VA?! Beyond surprised. Shocked, even. Bf and I were in town to do some home goods shopping (we were in WV for the weekend so it was nearby) and were nearing the critical "If I don't eat in the next 30 minutes I will throw myself out of this car rather than be with you" stage of hunger, so I pulled of Yelp, saw positive feedback for Clementine's, and pointed us immediately in it's direction.
First of all, what a great vibe! Totally artsy and college-y, but without being hipster-y. Excellent. We were there around early-bird special time, so it wasn't super crowded, but you could tell it was going to be a busy night, with Mardi Gras approaching and tables being pushed together for large parties. Shared the "pizza of the day" as an appetizer, fantastic, Turkey-Bacon-Avocado sandwich with house-fried potato chips for the bf (glowing reviews from him), and a falafel burger for me. That falafel burger...oh sorry, had to wipe some drool away. It was EPIC, and was at the suggestion of the server (I asked which veggie burger was better, she didn't hesitate before practically shouting "FALAFEL BURGER!" so I wasn't about to question her suggestion). The house-fried potato chips are so flippin' good, perfectly cooked and seasoned. I think the drink I had was a special martini (don't see it on the menu now), but it was fantastic. Also, their bathrooms are really nice.
I hope we find ourselves in the neighborhood again so we can go back!!
I went for trivia night the other week, and I had a blast!
The staff, while obviously tired, were still friendly and awesome. They even let us join the game a bit late! I had fries and shared a nutella dessert. Both were amazing and I would certainly eat there again. Sadly, the alcohol is pretty over-priced, but they had a fairly nice selection.
I would recommend this place on Tuesday nights for trivia night. You won't regret it!
Food was good.  Burger looked great.  Ordered medium but  was served well done. Â
Server was untrained. Â He grabbed the water glass by the lip and when we asked for a straw. Â He walked across the restaurant with an open straw in his hand. Â
For the price and attempt at quality this one failed.
I haven't been back to Harrisonburg, or clementines, in almost 3 years, but I loved it then and it's still just as good! Â The menu has changed a bit in the past few years, but the basics are still there. Â I had the baked goat cheese appetizer, which was creamy and delicious...just like I remembered it! Â And I had the falafel burger...oh wow! Â I inhaled that sandwich! Â So yummy. Â I got the black eyed pea salad instead of fries, which was really good, sort of like pasta salad but with black eyes peas. They, as always, had a nice selection of beer at reasonable prices. Â The waitress was definitely tired and less than enthusiastic about being there, but she did her job well. Â Clementine is one of my favorite places in Harrisonburg, I highly recommend it!
Review Source:I went here the night before freshman orientation with 2 other jmu freshman parents/sibling. I found it on yelp so thought this looks nice- pulled up the menu and mouth watered!
It's a really fab place- artwork everywhere and a really hip and trendy set up. Go to the bathroom!!! The sink is so cool as well as the lighting. It's a one person bathroom but has a chair...it was different.
The rissoto fritters were delicious. I had the linguine dish which was so scrumptious- tons of fresh veggies in a great sauce.
Others had market salad with chicken or shrimp loved it- great crab cakes and Ceasar salad.
I will for sure be coming back here!

Now am at JMU and have been back, GREAT FOOD. Cool & fun place!
I've never had the food here, so I can't speak to its quality, but the staff here is terrible. Â Rude to their customers - I understand that they're used to dealing with drunk college students, but that doesn't excuse the way I saw them treat my friend after THEY lost HER credit card (luckily, the stranger they gave it to found her on facebook the following day to let her know he had it). Â Completely disrespectful, never apologizing or even attempting to repair the situation. Â If you're working at an amazing bar in NYC or LA, I get that the staff may have attitude to patrons, but these people need to get real - they're servers and bartenders at a dive in Harrisonburg, Virginia - it's not the Ivy. Â
Oh, and there was a band playing that night, but they were letting people in earlier without charging a cover; their solution to this was to force (physically) everyone out who didn't have a wristband after a point, telling them they had to wait in the line to get in (to the bar they'd already been inside for a while now) and pay the cover to return. Â There are much, much, much friendlier places to eat in Harrisonburg - pretty much ANYWHERE, I guarantee it.
Saturday October 20th was my first day in Harrisonburg. I found this place from one of the Rockingham County brochures and it was the one that caught my eye over and over again.
The atmosphere reminds me of a place near San Diego State called "The Living Room" I used to study in. It was more of a giant and colorful coffee shop with live music, than a restaurant. Luke, our server, was constantly in a hurry. After he gave us our menus, he hurried off. After he came back and we ordered dinner, we had to stop him before he ran off again. He never asked us (from when he gave us our menus) what we wanted to drink.
Anyway, I got the bistro steak medallions ($15.95) and Motrya got the New York strip ($19.95). A Miller Lite went for $3.75, while an iced tea was $1.75. Our dinner was brought out by another server, a female who was much more personable.
We both enjoyed ourselves there enough to come back soon!
I don't give out five star reviews lightly, but I must say this place is a real gem in Harrisonburg and definitely deserves it!
Atmosphere is cozy, the noise level isn't too loud and the service is outstanding. Â
The food - absolutely delightful.
We arrived as happy hour began and were able to take advantage of the $4 appetizers and $2 off signature cocktails and drafts. Â Tonight they had a Rogue Oatmeal Stout on one of their rotating taps, and I was quite happy. Â My husband tried some of their signature cocktails, including the Oh My Darlin'. Â It was well mixed, none of the flavors overpowered one another, and overall a winner.
For appetizers, we started with the shrimp & grits and tamales with pork carnitas. Â
The tamales had a nice little bit of heat, without being overly spicy. The grits were incredible! Â They were very creamy, the lobster sauce was delightful, the shrimp were a very nice size and cooked to perfection.
For dinner, I had the turkey, bacon and avocado sandwich, while my husband had the smokehouse burger. Â We were very impressed with both. Â The burger was juicy, smoky (as the name promised!), and he was very satisfied. Â The bread (a sub roll) on my sandwich was soft yet nicely toasted on one side, the avocado was creamy and fresh, and the bacon had a nice crispness. Â The house made chips are wonderful! Â Very nicely seasoned! I normally don't enjoy potato chips, but I could not stop eating them.
The decor is very artisic, and it is worth noting the restroom. Â Walking into it is like walking into a classy spa, all it needs is a little soft music playing and an aromatherapy candle. There is even a cozy chair to sit in, a very modern sink and a glass partition between the toilet and washing areas. Â A lot of care and attention was clearly put into this detail, and it's worth mentioning because it is so often overlooked in most establishments.
Overall, a wonderful meal and a unique experience. Â We look forward to visiting again when staying at Massanutten in the future.
Great atmosphere and great food. Â Lunch today was delicious. Â Pastrami reuben had
plenty of meat, sauerkraut, cheese, and sauce, and the rye bread was excellent. Â My wife had a BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato), which was also delicious. Â Service was great. Â The restroom was an artful experience.
Overall I enjoyed the experience. The beer list and atmosphere were exceptional, with the exception of the music being too low to hear. Â The food was ok- my friend ordered the catfish wish was great but the crabcake with the boring steamed asparagus left me unsatisfied. (Asparagus doesn't have to be boring! It is a dish that can be made exciting easily!) Â The ginger bbq wings were oustanding as was the dessert. Â For Harrisonburg this is as good as it gets for a foodie.
Review Source:I have had lunch from here before (carry out) and the food was great. Â
However; went there on a girls night out and the place was packed upstairs and down. We went downstairs. My order got lost, then when i finally got food it was cold. Â It took forever to get to the bar to get a drink. Â
The drinks we did manage to get were good. Â
We finally gave up and went to Dave's next door. Â
The moral of the story: When they're busy; walk away!
I just moved to the area and Clementine was one of the first restaurants I tried in town. It was a great decision. Everyone who was with me enjoyed their meals. I had the chicken, apple, bacon wrap and it is something I can see myself craving. My mouth is watering as I think about it now. YUM! My cousin had the falafel and she loved it, as well.
I took half a point away because I didnt love the potato chips that were served with the wrap. They were okay, but I wouldnt miss them if they were off the plate. To be honest, after eating them (and I love chips), I would have rather had fries.
I took another half off for the homemade lemonade. I am a bit of a snob when it comes to lemonade. Thankfully it was truly homemade, but I think they added mint and maybe something else. Just stick to beautiful simply delicious lemonade. There is no need to try to jazz up something great.
I loved the atmosphere too. I hope to go back sometime for trivia and brunch.
Went here for dinner followed by Tuesday Night Trivia. Menu has diverse selection with lots of vegetarian and vegan options, GREAT beer selection as well as $6 crafted cocktails.
As previously stated, the interior is truly incredible. Artwork and features are colorful, playful, and imaginative. The restroom on the main floor features a stunning modern sink and decor. This is clearly a cool place to be and stands out from all other bar/restaurants in Harrisonburg.
I had the Falafel Burger which was seriously the best falafel I've had. It was especially light and fluffy on the inside with a crisp fried texture and slight garlicky flavor. It was a little difficult to eat with the soft bread (ciabatta or focaccia) but enjoyable nonetheless. Everyone else seemed to be enjoying their sandwiches and burgers.
Service was a bit inconsistent. Someone in our party asked if they were doing $2 Lion's Head (lager) bottles tonight, and the server had no idea. She went to check and said they were. This was not really advertised anywhere...good thing we asked! At first we had empty drinks often on the table but she became much more attentive as the night went on.
I also was downstairs at Ruby's a few weeks back and had a good time. Not as quirky atmosphere but still a cool place to chill.
We were in the area for a weekend and wanted some good food for weekend brunch. Not keenly interested in the IHOPs and the Bob Evans and the Waffle Houses (nothing against them personally), we decided on Clementine's after some yelping.
Not knowing what to expect other than some good reviews, we drive in to old town Harrisonburg and were glad we picked this place. The look and decor and ambiance Â
is warm with a touch of eclectic. The paint work looks like it belongs at MOMA (NYC) rather than a sleepy (IMHO) college town in the capital of the South!
Prices are reasonable for all dishes but the crowning glory is the $5 carafes of Bloody Mary and Momosas. $5 for 2 glasses is a must buy!
The Bloody Mary was awesome :)
I found the Momosa lacking in some punch and also having ice in the drink is not my idea for a mimosa.
For the main course I ordered the Biscuit and gravy that hit the spot - southern style - buttery and yummy!
Also got to taste other dishes off my friends' plates - salmon; crab cakes; and french toast (all from brunch menu). They were all good and it was hard to pick the clear winner.
Last thoughts - this place does not belong here but I'm glad it does - a star in the neighborhood!
Definitely a must visit place for brunch when in the area.
The place is a little kooky- we had to wait for a table and instead of taking your name they give you a fruit or vegetable to hold. When your table is ready they call out the name of your food- such as "grapes' or "green pepper."
The decor is also interesting with exposed brick walls and modern art. There is a performance stage too. Unfortunately we were not there on a night when there was entertainment.
I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered the shrimp and grits appetizer, which was really tasty. Overall the food seemed pretty good, service was just average.
Would return if in the area againl.

Oh my darlin, Clementine doesn't seem like it should belong in Harrisonburg, but I'm glad it does! Very artsy and sometimes quirky (you get a piece of fruit instead of a buzzer or number while you wait for a table), this place is right on the verge of being pretentious.
I haven't experienced the live music or dance parties here so I can't judge on that front, but Tuesday trivia night is always a good time. The food is adequate, but nothing special. I'd rather go there for a few drinks than a full meal. I do like their light snack minute for late nights...I think you can get an order of fries for a dollar or so. There's a lounge area downstairs, though I'm not sure when/if that is available for drinking or eating.
The best thing I can say about the place is that it looks gorgeous, with beautiful artwork plastered all over the walls. Also, this may sound strange, but the bathroom (at least the men's) is really cool looking.
Thumbs up!
I found this place using yelp and it was awesome!! The decor is so eccentric and they have bands who play at night and I hear from some of the locals, they even have game night. Â Aside from the array of entertainment they provide, their food and service was great!!
I came for lunch and had the pulled pork sandwhich and normally I would not choose a pork dish. Â However, their descriptions of tabasco onions had me and I needed to try this dish. Â It was delish!! Probably the best bbq pulled pork sandwhich I ever had. Â My friend had the fried goat cheese salad and that was so good!! The goat cheese was fresh and the tasted amazing. Â We had a group of 4 with us and each one of us left satisfied and exteremely happy with the exeperience we had. Â
We will be staying her for a few weeks and it's definitely a place I have recommended to friends and come back to so I can check out some of the entertainment.
Best restaurant bathroom ever. It looks awesome and is always clean <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fmattrock%2F2357147777%2F&s=e7326ab06d3f65182dd074880f1fbdf7d22a51f27cb3ba41a3af92e1a48fd863" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.flickr.com/ph…</a>. Honestly, everyone that goes in them comes back raving.
Oh, the food, right...it's well above average for Harrisonburg. They have a solid selection of vegetarian fare and the prices aren't too steep either.
Their beer selection is pretty good too, I only wish that the bar upstairs was larger. They have another bar downstairs along with a random set-up that, last I saw, mostly involved Rockband. Unfortunately it feels really cramp and depressing down there.
This and Taste of Thai are the best reasonably priced date spots in Harrisonburg.
We stopped here on our way down to Tennessee and since it was pretty late, we figured a college town would have a lot open.
This place has a lot going on and it seems like it would be a lot of fun to go to if you lived in the town. There was a dance party going on upstairs that you had to pay $3 for but downstairs was free and very hipster. There was a bar and a bunch of couches and table tops to eat at, I wish I had a place like this when I was in college. It wasn't too loud downstairs where I couldn't talk, whereas upstairs was supposed to be loud and a more party vibe.
We got the falafel burger, mac and cheese, and pita appetizers. Very good. The mac and cheese wasn't that warm but it still tasted good not being too warm. The burger was huge! I don't think I could have handled it but Steve thought it was tasty. They have a huge selection of beer, even Yuengling, which is more of a tri-state beer, he was glad to see it expanding.
Nice spot to stop by.
This is my favorite place to go in Harrisonburg. I love the atmosphere & cocktails. The basil fresca (with grapefruit juice) is delightful.
The atmosphere is fun: good colors, art work, lighting, and old brick walls. It's the kind of place I'm happy to hang out in. Happy hour offers great appetizer specials.
The downside: the food doesn't always meet expectations, especially the salads which almost always have some amount of wilted lettuce. The menu has a lot of great items if you love seafood, if not it's a bit harder to find something innovative. Of course, there are burgers and sandwiches, but nothing that has the kind of flare you'd like in a restaurant with such great atmosphere.
The desserts are usually excellent so save room!
We got to Clementine on a Friday night at 9:15 after calling to determine when the kitchen closes (10). Â We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated without the $10 cover charge (great band, Yarn, was playing) since we were eating.
Tabitha, our friendly server, promptly shuffled thru the crowd to get our drink orders (mmmm....white cranberry, watermelon liquor, and prosecco??? Â don't mind if i do!) and then returned with a smile to take our order.
We grabbed a appetizers--crab cakes and PORK TAMALES and a delicious spinach pesto pizza. Â The food was fantastic and the service was even better!
We were tired from being on the road and so we took dessert to go. Â Bread pudding with bourbon glaze. Â It was so good, even heated up the next day!
I'm so glad that I checked Yelp for a recommendation. Â Clementine was an excellent choice!
Coming from a foodie town and going to middle-of-nowhere Harrisonburg is typically a restaurant snobs worst nightmare. But here at Clementines, that is definitely not the case.
Happy hour offers $2 Stellas and a variety of other beers, with $3 or $4 cocktails. Food is amazing (try the goat cheese salad!) and service is prompt.
One of the greatest things about this restaurant, though, is the atmosphere. It's very well decorated and is a great place to take those who are fans of modern art.
When I first heard about Clementine and went to visit a couple years ago I was fairly certain it would be one of the 50% of restaurants that fail within a year. Â It just didn't seem like the type of place that would survive in Harrisonburg.
Thankfully I was wrong. Â The beer list here is pretty extensive and reasonably priced with most micro brews being $4-6. Â They have around 10 "signature" cocktails, about half of which are original but all of them are quite good. Â The staff has been friendly each time I've been even though I'd normally expect a decent amount of "too cool for school" snobbery at this sort of place. Â I've had brunch, lunch and dinner here and all 3 were great. Â They have a lunch special which changes each day and is posted on a sign board outside and most of the time its pretty creative and tasty.
Although I'm not really into the type of live music that comes here they seem to have a decent enough amount of entertainment with movie nights, trivia, karaoke, live bands, djs, etc. Â The upstairs is basically the restaurant and the downstairs has a smaller bar with tons of couches and a few tables. Â Seems like a good low key place to start out the night.
If you're in town, swing by and give them a try. Â Harrisonburg could use more creative spots like Clementine.
OK, guys and gals, here's a winner. An absolute winner. I had the Turkey sandwich, chicken Ginger soup. The soup was so good, I actually ordered a second helping of the stuff. It's amazing. Chicken, ginger, mushroom, some shredded carrot. Unbelievable. Â The turkey sandwich? Lots of turkey. Great cheese. the bread used really helps make the sandwich as well. Remember that this is kind of a performance cafe, too, so try to either be patient with a line, or eat at times when no one else is in there, let alone performing.
Oh, for a treat, check out the really beautiful bathroom. As modern as they come in a warehouse-style place! Â The whole place has kind of a beatnik feel to this yelper, but a buddy of mine said it reminded him of a New York kind of hangout.
All in all? You can NOT go bad here. Especially if you have a date. Just leave the clove cigarettes at home!
Pretty nice place to hang. Â Went for happy hour today -- so got $2 off draft beers then ate appetizers: goat cheese dip w/ pita (tasty but not very pretty) and crabcakes (very small). Â then had a pretty good burger.
atmosphere was nice and the bartender a pretty cool guy. Â also came for brunch and my eggs florentine were delicious. Â will return, for sure.
The first thing you notice about Clementine's is that it is perfectly lit. So many restaurants around here light up their spaces like cafeterias or darken them so much you can't see your food. Â Clementine's is classy.
My girlfriend and I both had their vegetarian burger, which is vegan without the mayo. Â Quite good. And they serve it with potato chips they make in-house.
Clementine's also has a great draught beer selection. Â They have Delirium! Their bottled selection isn't bad either. Â And the bar is beautiful. Â Not sure why the big ugly cooler's in the middle of it, but the rest of it looks great.
We were there on a Sunday night, and a really good Gypsy Jazz band called the John Jorgenson Quintet was playing. Â It looks like they have lots of good musical events on their calendar.
I kind of look forward to going back when I'm in Harrisonburg.
