Review Source:pros: $2 beers?!, nice staff, chill crowd
cons: shady but I love a good bar in a shady town
Went for a friend's birthday. Â I remember this plaza b/c I used to do laundry here as a wee lass. Â The space hasn't changed. Â Lots of poor parking spaces with lighting so dim, it might as well as be midnight at all hours. Â As the soft breeze passed through us, we looked up to a oddly lit sign which read "Cocktails, Anyone?" Â Sure. Â Why not. Â It's for a good cause.
Did we order cocktails? Nein. Â We opted for beers. Â I took out $20 for two beers + tip and lil hope for some cash back (which is customary in LA proper). Â Caught the eye of the one bartender with enough metal armor on his leather jacket to defend Thanagar alone. Â 15 minutes later (there were a LOT of people waiting for drinks) and I'm sipping on my Blue Moon. Â I ask for the total. Â
$4 bucks, he says. Â
What? $4 EACH, right?
Nope, $4 even.
Quick double, no triple take with friend. Â Throw them back as we laugh and give him a better tip than typical. Â A few beers and one cocktail later (strong and pricier than beer but worth it).
VDJ rocking visual and audio tracks in the adjacent pool room. Â Gotta go back for a bucket of beers and some interesting eye... "candy" or "leftovers" depending on your taste.
I'd never heard of this place until a friend decided to celebrate his birthday here. the surrounding area looks a bit sketchy and you'll probably miss the place if you don't know where exactly it is. the main bar/lounge is pretty small. I noticed there were "reserved" signs on some tables. really? I'm pretty sure (as a friend of mine noted) it was to keep the patrons near the bar to continue drinking. smart, if that was their ploy. eventually, the signs disappeared and everyone was able to enjoy the bright red velvet-like furniture.
so maybe I'm just cheap, but $5 for a bottled Stella?? seems like pricey. I don't know, I guess going to a dive bar I expect dive bar prices, especially for bottled beer. as far as the music, whoa, it was all over the place and not in the greatest way. 3 words: Harlem Shake videos. I know it's all the rage now, but just playing a loop of the track and showing (what I guess were) the top 5 Harlem Shake videos was a bit too much. the music took a sudden turn and all of a sudden I swore I was stuck at a quinceanera. overall, I had a good time with my friends. but I don't have any real desire to come back here, it's just not my bag. I'm giving it 3 stars because I didn't have a terrible time or experience.
**a note to the ladies: beware the girl's restroom. there is NO lock on the door. I learned the hard way. I think my exact words were, "whoa, whoa, whoa! hold on!" so just have a girlfriend guard the door if you decide to use the facilities.
