Been coming here since the 70's. Was good then and it's good now. If you are traveling down  460 I would def opt for cowlings over the much pricier virginia diner. The virginia diner is good but the bbq here is awesome. For some reason yelp isnt letting me check in saying Im too far away but Im sitting right inside and it smells wonderful!!!

My dad brings home bbq from this place. Its aways soggy, tasteless, and reminds me of pot roast. Sorry dad. Hush puppies and onion rings are ok.

Hit the spot!  The BBQ was perfect.  Not too messy and not too dry.  I will definitely go again when traveling 460.

Cowling's BBQ is great!   We (my wife and I) stopped in for lunch on the way to Richmond.  (on RT 460).  The BBQ here is great - pit cooked pulled pork and the sauce has a great flavor.  It is NC style with a good vinegar flavor.  The sandwich was great.  We ordered onion rings and they were delicious.  The service was great and the people friendly.   You know it is good when you see so many locals in there.

I am looking forward to visiting again soon.

I've added some photos to this site.

Cowling's has the best North Carolina Style BBQ I have ever had.  Small place but clean and friendly.  Many locals eat there.

    INCREDIBLE FOOD!!

We stopped by this Bar-B-Q place because of the high reviews we saw on Yelp.  And boy were they right on track.

Me and my wife stopped by.  The place looked nice on the inside.  Very friendly staff welcomed us in and waited on us.  I ordered the Pulled Pork with beans and cole slaw.  One thing that caught my attention was when I ordered the sweet tea.  It was delicious and tasted home made +1.  Then we got our food which was incredibly delicious.  The pulled pork was great the beans and coleslaw were delicious - best I tasted.  But The food that blew my mind was shockingly The biscuits.  They were Unbelievable.  How do you make bread taste SO GOOD?!  I woulda paid $20 just for that bread alone.  I will stop by frequently (once a week).  My new favorite restaurant.  Thank you Cowling BarBQ

What a great find!  Delicious Carolina style BBQ.  Pork was so good I bought 2 pounds of pulled pork to go.   Very reasonably priced.

We live too far away from Cowling's to enjoy it regularly, but we stop every time we go to the beach.  Doesn't matter if it's 11 am or 3 pm or an actual mealtime.  The barbeque is perfect pulled pork with a good and distinctive house-made sauce.  You need not go beyond it on the menu, but the chocolate meringue pie is quite good!  Fries are passable and homemade onion rings are long on onion and cooked well.
