My hubby was in the dog house this week. Like, major doghouse. I It's not often this happens. So I was pleasantly surprised, yet terrified when he told me he had planned a date night out to try to make up for making me so angry. You see, as the resident "foodie" in our house, and the calendar manager, when we go out to eat, I pick the place about 99% of the time. Since I am a frequent yelper, I often have a list of the hot new places I want to try, or local classics that I just love to go to. So, when hubby told me we were going to Crave, I must admit - I was a little nervous.
I had been here once before - just on a Saturday afternoon for a drink before a wedding - so I had no experience with their food, or really their dining atmosphere or service. I know they used to have a "club" associated with the restaurant which I never went to (though I heard their annual White parties were quite fun). Naturally, when he told me the plan, I jumped on yelp and started to read reviews and scour the menu. The reviews were mixed. The more recent reviews I read were not the best, so I was even more nervous that hubby's once in a lifetime chance at impressing me with a  restaurant choice was going to fall short.
He had made 8:30 reservations. We were greeted by an unenthusiastic hostess, but then regreeted by someone else who had a much better attitude. I was instantly impressed with the space - great décor. The place was not packed- but almost every table was full of people - good sign, I thought!
I wanted to start the night with a good martini - and they provided. I opted for the strawberry shortcake martini which came complete with a graham cracker rim - nice touch. Hubby's gin and tonic was strong. Off to a good start, and I was slowly forgiving the man!
We began to look over the menu. I, of course, had pretty much already decided I would order sushi. I don't EVER get to go out for sushi - which was another point for the hubby since he picked a place that served it. He doesn't eat seafood, so I was worried he would have a hard time finding something that he really enjoyed, but they offered filet - so no problem there.
We started with edamame - which was honestly great. It's hard to screw up steamed and salted soy bean pods - but I have been to plenty of places that can't get it right. These were bursting with flavor, very plump beans and the perfect amount of sea salt. Each of us got the house salad which for me, was only OK. The ingredients were all VERY fresh - but truth be told - I am a fan of the traditional Japanese dressing - not the vinaigrette they served here. Still, it was presented with elegance and I enjoyed it.
On to the main course. I got the Tuna Crunch roll and the caterpillar roll. There were many interesting options, but I am allergic to shrimp, and many of their special rolls included shrimp. Both were AWESOME. The tuna crunch roll was a little on the small side - but seriously BEAUTIFUL - some of the best looking sushi I've ever had. Hubby got the filet - again - so impressed with the presentation, but even more so with the flavor! It one of the more perfectly cooked cuts of meat I can remember ordering in a long time.
Another element of surprise - to really hit the night out of the ballpark - my husband TRIED SUSHI!! And (drumroll please) HE LIKED IT! He even said he would order it again! We each had another drink and debated over dessert (they had a triple flavor creme brulee which sounded great) but we passed. I was amazed, stuffed, kind of drunk and husband was forgiven. I'd call it a successful night.
We had no plans to eat here, we just stumbled in, and I am glad we did.  Everything was great: nice décor, friendly service, nice menu, great sushi.  We got there around 6PM and we were able to get happy hour specials on a variety of sushi rolls, salads and small plates.  Some interesting menu items that stood out are the hot and hour miso soup and the mango salad.  The only downside was that some of the sushi rolls were tinier than we expected and the bathroom was disgusting.  I will definitely come back if I am in the area.
Review Source:That moment when you get dresse, standing in the mirror and immediately begin to blow kisses at yourself softly. You arrive at your destination. You look around and think, "damn, just wasted and outfit."
Crave has the ambience and décor to match the "hautest" of them all. The flavor is modern, sleek and adorned simply with attractive motifs. I went on a Saturday. They remove the seats in the lounge area to create space for the dance floor.
There are roped VIP sections as well as private rooms for birthday parties and the like. The bar offers top shelf and has an excellent wine selection. I requested a red Ménage à Trois, which is usually not in stock. Yet, to my surprise it was in stock.
There is a sushi bar (for my sushi heads) to the left of the entrance and $4 coat check station. Â The deejay played a smooth combination of classics, new hits, and goodies.
The overall energy of the club was pretty celebratory and happy. Â No problems ensued. Â
Service was polite, accomodating and swift. Â I am only giving three stars because I've never gone during the day to enjoy the cuisine nor have I tried the sushi. I'm picky about my seaweed.
First time to Crave and Im a fan. I've read mixed reviews on service and food but my visit today was wonderful. Went for happy hour, 4:30-6:30 pm and they had some wonderful rolls that were very inexpensive and delicious. Also tried the lobster that was to die for. Sat at the bar and bartender was attentive, friendly and helpful. Can't wait to get back again!
Review Source:I've been to this place several times. Never have I ever been disappointed. The sushi is always so fresh and they offer quite the variety too. The ambiance is very relaxing, the waitstaff is very professional but still make you feel comfortable, and the overall experience is one to remember. I recommend the Las Vegas roll, two thumbs up.
Review Source:I've been going to Crave for 5 years now and love it! Â I always go for the happy hour as I've never had to wait for a table and it is significantly cheaper. Â It is pricey otherwise and I wouldn't pay that much. Â The happy hour(from 4:30-6:30 Mon-Sat) is most certainly worth it. Â Go as soon as it opens-4:30pm. Â I've always had great service and delicious food. Â The calamari is fantastic! Â Big steaks of calamari, super tender, instead of the usual tiny strips you see most places. Â The tempura dishes are amazing....love the ebi tempura, veggie tempura...! Â The creme brulee tasting dessert is just so good. Â You get a small regular vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon brulee. Â Every time I go I get the grilled veggie roll, crunchy roll, shrimp tempura roll, chicken panko, beef negimake...it's usually a group of us and we all share. Â The only dish I've ever been bummed about was the last time I was there. Â The beef negimake was over cooked and dry and the eel roll was just gross. Â But then again...the mental part of eating eel I'm sure had something to do with it. Â Every other time I've ordered the beef though it's been delicious. Â I know I've said it before, but I will say it again. Â Each and every time I've been there, the service has been fantastic. Can't say enough about it and will continue to go back.
The restaurant itself is beautiful and I really love the couch/lounge section. Â My girlfriends and I decided to try those out last visit and it was great. Â :) Â Love this restaurant!
This place was really nice. Â The staff was extremely friendly and the service was good. Â I came in for a gift card, but couldn't resist ordering a couple of rolls to go. Â The gift card came in a really cute tin box, which impressed me. Â Most importantly, the rolls were very tasty. Â Especially the crunchy tuna roll.
Review Source:Had some what of a limited experience here, but I'll still call it like I see it. Â Came here with my friends for our monthly get together. Â Dearborn is not necessarily a place I would associate sushi with, but they gotta have some places here, right?
AMBIANCE- clean, typical modern look to this place. Â This joint is located in a cluster of restaurants and has it's own parking lot which is cool. Â Like most Japanese joints, a real sterile feel to it, but inviting all the same.
SERVICE- our server was pretty friendly, and even was so bold as to call us out as we were ordering food (more on that later). Â Most of us did not need an explanation of what things were, but she still offered up help if we needed it. Â
MENU- typical Japanese fare (sushi, entrees, etc..). Â This place didn't seem to be a "fusion" joint like so many Japanese places tend to be. Â We just missed happy hour (4:30pm - 6:30pm) but we weren't too bummed by that.
FOOD- got a few specialty rolls, a few vegetarian rolls, and my friend tried the "buffalo roll- cooked beef with red chilli flakes. Â I won't lie, the rolls (specialty included) were nothing special by any means. Â They were good, but not anything truly unique. Â The buffalo roll actually had a bit too much red chilli flake, and really was quite unbearable.
OVERALL- meh. Â If I craved sushi this place would satisfy that yearning, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to this place.
CELEBRITY RATING- DEVON AOKI
The service at Crave is okay and they have a nice ambiance. My visit prior was nice, so I decided to come back on my own for a midweek sushi fix. What killed 2nd my visit was the lack of sushi. Have you ever been to a sushi lounge and not had sushi??? It's like KFC with no chicken, Dunkin Donuts without coffee or Astoria without cake. Needless to say that visit was a sad one. On a weekday night visit they were all out of sticky rice, so they couldn't serve sushi. I settled for the tempura chicken which was good, but a tapas portion that left me yearning for an asparagus roll.
Review Source:Yes, a one star rating is harsh, but considering the cost of the Crave dining experience relative to our experience, it is absolutely earned.
We had purchased and planned to use a Groupon for this visit, though upon informing our server of said Groupon, it was suggested that we decide what we wanted to order before choosing to use the discount, as their specials may end up being a better bargain. Â This seemed to be good advice, though by the end of our evening, it seemed as though we were being mislead.
My Wife ordered the citrus chicken and I ordered the lemon grass filet (medium), and we shared California tempura. Â While her chicken dish and the California tempura was quite good, the filet came to the table very much on the rare side of medium rare. Â Given the price of the dish, this is completely unacceptable, and those who know a thing or two about steak know that sending it back will not likely improve the filet.
That the filet was severely under cooked is not the sole reason for the one star review. Â Our server simply disappeared during our meal, returning rarely at first, then not at all after a certain point, with no explanation at all. Â Again, completely unacceptable for a dining experience of this price. Â Our water cups ran dry and my cocktail glass was empty more than full. Â Eventually, what we believe was a bartender began taking care of us, though again, no explanation was offered for our original server's disappearance. Â I spent several years waiting tables at Pizza Hut, and that behavior wouldn't even be acceptable there.
Had we been dining at 8:00PM on a Friday night among a bustling crowd of people, the complete and utter lack of service and poorly-cooked filet would have at least been understandable, though still not forgivable, given the price. Â This is a real shame, as the atmosphere of Crave was quite nice. Â In the end, we didn't end up using the Groupon, so we will (begrudgingly) return, in the hope that our experience was the exception, rather than the rule.
Honestly not all the reviewers are saying! The sushi was ok maybe even good, but not for the price! We paid $52 for what I could have gotten at a dive sushi bar for $20.
Plus I am very sorry to say the service was TERRIBLE we waited over 40 minutes for our sushi!! Then our rolls came out at two different times! The waitress didn't bother to say "sorry about your wait" or anything! The place was not packed, and the service was jus slow..... I had to ask for refills, not one bothered to notice. For the price and the ritzy attitude they needed to up their game.
I was very disappointed, honestly go to Ann Arbor or Ypsi they have better Sushi places hands down! Anyone who claims this is their favorite Sushi place needs to try something new, because the bar is set really love with Crave!
We ordered:
Tempura Chicken Small Plate
Soup Asia
Rock n Roll Roll
Las Vegas Roll
I visited in October 2010 as my Open Table account told me... I had read only good reviews and trusted that it would be good as it was supposedly voted the "Best Sushi in Dearborn,"
I had sushi, my colleague who didn't like sushi ordered a tar-tar. Â For what it was worth all of the food was pretty bad. Â The sushi was inedible. Â Obviously I'd never go here again and am glad I'm not working in the area anymore so I'm not tempted to try.
First visit. Called ahead, and was informed that I might have to wait for a table, but did not wait for 8:30 when I was told the first reservation would be. After standing at the bar for 20 minutes, a 2 seats opened up before a table did, so we opted to just eat at the bar. Good thing we did... It was after 8 on a Saturday night, but there was a food happy hour at the bar only! Didn't get a table, but got half off most of our food.. fair trade!
Food was great. Drinks were reasonable, but small. Atmosphere was pretty good (except for drag racing playing on the only TV behind the bar).
Will go back after I try O'Sushi down the street!
Ive eatin at great restaurants in La, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, etc... And this place, which is located in the Detroit area, is the best sushi restaurant I've ever been too.. The food is incredible, the Miami style decor is incredible, and the workers are great. I highly recommend this place
Review Source:It's such a far drive that I really only go here once in a long while for special occasions because they are expensive! Every time I have been here, it has been a pleasant experience. They have innovative selections and their white fish sashimi is really impressive (buttery & fresh) and their salmon sashimi is one of the best.
FYI avoid the volcano & dragon roll, pretty unimpressive. Otherwise the majority of the other rolls are good. And they have a nice drink selection, try the Koi (cucumber flavored).
I was told by the waiter that their sushi menu is also Lebonese inspired so they do have an interesting take on some of the dishes.
Now if you just want simple, affordable and delicious sushi, Kyoto in Royal Oak is the place to go, they have happy hour on Mondays for the budget-conscious diners of Detroit.
LOVE this place! Â When I moved back to MI from LA, I thought I would never have good sushi again, but I was wrong! Â The quality of the food is excellent and the service is friendly and professional. Â I have even brought friends from out of town here and they say it's one ofthe best sushi places they've ever eaten at! Â Some people may think it's pricey, but I don't think so. Â It is comparable to other sushi places I've been to. Â And, do you really want to risk eating discount raw fish? Â LOL!
Review Source:I tried it once just to see if it's good. Then I tried it again just to make sure.
crave is the best bet for legit sushi if you are in the detroit area. After being disappointed by many asian restaurants here, Crave is the only place that truly exceeded my expectations.
The lobster roll is the most amazing sushi i've ever had. other stuff are good too. This place knows how to stick with sushi and not get side tracked by borderline racists that expects sushi places should always serve fried rice and thai food.
another thing i have to say they do a good job with choosing the music. thank god they don't play some annoying katy perry pop shit. they play lounge music that you don't really notice. listen and learn other restaurants, if you don't know what to play, get a pandora account and type in lounge music.
Just throw your notions of sushi, sashimi, pacific rim fusion, and all that other pigeon-holing claptrap right out the window. Â Sit down in the uber-stylish Crave dining room, and let the magic ooze over you, like so much tamagoyaki.
Forget, too, that you are in the heartland, just another fly-over state, because Crave puts the lie to a dearth of sophistication betwixt coasts. Â Lovely and talented waitstaff. Â Elegant and understated cocktails. Â Soft euro-techno background music. Â Inventive and unusual combinations both on and off the menu.
One star deduction for Manhattan-level pricing. Â Neither local rent nor wages can be high enough to mimic Nobu.
(If you don't start your meal with Watermelon Napoleon, you're no longer my friend. Â Sure, I'll nod to you in public, but the magic will have evaporated, as a glass of last night's Roederer, into the evening air.)
Last night was actually my second excursion to this restaurant. The first time was a trial run where I was watching my budget and so forth, water-testing if you will.
The ambience in this place is fantastic. It's white, which makes everything look larger and dissipates my my fear of uncleanliness (yes, I've probably watched way too many episodes of Kitchen Nightmares), so customers would be able to easily observe any dirt during daylight hours. Unlike most sushi bars I've been too, the place is big enough so that customers don't feel cramped, even when it is completely full. The waitstaff/ maitre d were  extremely attentive and helpful, and did not rush us even though we were there for almost three hours. We also got to dine by candelight, so that's +1000 brownie points.
The girls in our group ordered saketinis. The Strawberry Shortcake (or was it Cheesecake?) saketini actually tasted like its namesake. Following a close second was the Violet Pearl, and there is one they make with champagne that is pretty amazing too.
My beau does not eat sushi, but luckily they have a vast selection of surf and turf "small plates" that could easily satisfy one servings for a single person dining alone. No complaints here.
When ordering sushi, we decided to order 1 roll each and share (between 4 people), and we did this twice. This is the only real issue I have. While I get that the sushi kitchen is small, probably too small for the restaurant, I think it's silly to not deliver all the rolls on a single plate. At other sushi bars I've been to, this occurs automatically. Here, we were served one roll at a time, with significant time lapse in between the time the other rolls were delivered. Another oddity about the sushi bar is the fish tank behind the sushi kitchen. Die predators, die?
Between our 5 person bill, food averaged out to a little over $20/person.
Overall, the experience was very good and we will probably be returning.
Fav rolls: Tuna Crunch, Ebi, Grilled veggie (..and I hate onions, that's how good it is!!)
I love sushi and I love soup and Crave has good both!
I like they have unique flavors and combos. I think I had my first apple in sushi here in the Big Apple roll. It was surprisingly way way delish. I get it everytime I go now!
Ok so this place is ultra super trendtastic. I stopped in here the first time on the way home from the airport and was not looking quite the part. HA! I think my pink and black chuck taylors were a bit casual ahahaha!
The decor is really pretty though, at xmas time they have the place all aglow it's really pretty and romatic. I liked that!
My vodka martini with 2 bleu cheese stuffed olives was made PERFECT and made me forget about the stress of the day.
Our server was tres gorgeous!! I'm talking swimsuit issue hot here dudes!! Oh and to top it off she was way cool!! I really do love a fun effecient staff. Even if the food isn't so awesome sometimes great service is usually the redeemer.
I mean Crave has a ton of reviews and i could say more but it's all here I'm sure.
I like Crave and I will keep going back as long and they keep up the good quality and service!
I couldn't believe this place is in Dearborn, MI!! No ofense meant...but you know what I mean. I live in Philly and consider myself a sushi snob :)...I live a stone's throw from Morimoto in Philly
The outside entrance looks like it's in a pretty sketchy area...so wasn't sure what to expect. But once we walked inside....man, was I surprised! The interior is very modern and chic....service was excellent!
And the sushi rocked....especially the dragon roll...I mean I've had hundreds of versions of the dragon roll....but this was something!!
I had a Groupon burning a hole in my pocket, and one recent Saturday afternoon we were both looking hip enough to try Crave. Â We arrived about an hour before they closed for lunch, and the place was empty, but the waitress assured us we had plenty of time.
We ordered drinks - large hot sake for me and a large Asahi for Ken. Â Drinks were half off, and she applied the discount even with the Groupon (nice, unexpected touch). Â Our app was Calamari Crisps, which turned out to be long slices of calamari, breaded and deep fried, with a sweet-spicy dipping sauce. Â Good app, but expensive for the amount of food you received.
Next up, sushi! Â Lobster Roll ($16), Manhattan Roll ($15) and Spicy Scallop Roll ($7). Â My favs were the scallop - fresh, sweet, super spicy punch, and the Manhattan - king crab inside and spicy tuna on top. Â Ken liked the lobster the best, but for him the sauce made that roll (I personally thought it tasted a bit like tomato sauce, so I didn't love it). Â We split some nigiri also - Kani (king crab $4) and Maguro Tataki (seven spiced seared tuna $6). Â Nigiri came two pieces per order, so prices were right. Â The tataki was particularly interesting. Â My only complaint about the sushi was that some of the rice rolls were not as tight as I would like, leading to quick blow out if you weren't paying attention and left your roll in the soy for a half second too long.
I'd describe the interior as minimalist, modern chic. Â The two of us middle-aged average people didn't feel out of place here during the daytime, but I can see this becoming a place to 'be seen' at night. Â Our waitress Stacey was bubbly and extremely knowledgeable, offering to order for us (her recommendations included our two largest rolls).
All in all, we'd go back.
My husband is not a huge fan of sushi, but being he did the electrical work here years ago, and he was trying be nice-he made reservations. I know Crave has been in business for years, and we always talked about going, but Dearborn is far from us. If we drive out that way we just stick to Detroit.
Our reservations were for 8pm on Friday night. I expected it to be busy, but there were plenty of open tables. The music was mildly clubby, ambiance a little too modern for my taste, but still very nice. The customers were all dressed very nicely. Service was very good.
The Drinks: Expensive but very good. Also took a little long, but with all the premium ingredients going into them-I can overlook. I had a Frostbite which was Raspberry Stoli, Grapefruit juice, elderflower (do not know what this is) and a pineapple slice. Very good. After that I switched it up to a Lavender. This was Stoli Blueberry, apple juice, elderflower, mashed blueberries and lavender. Â I loved it! I made me so very drowsy though. So much that instead of going out after dinner, we drove straight home and I was in bed by 11:30pm! We planned out being out later...so beware do not underestimate the power of Lavender!
The Foods: We had the Miso soup and hot Miso soup. They were so-so. Not a huge fan of Miso. I tried the Chilean Sea Bass Ceviche. It seemed a little on the lemony side, but I liked it well enough. My husband had the Beef Negimake. Slices of filet around asparagus. We both loved it.
I had the Rainbow Roll. Perfect size, loved the REAL king crab in the roll (even some moderately good sushi joints use imitation). Everything was fresh and tasty. I also had the Salmon (Sake) Nigiri as well as the Yellow Fin (Hamachi). Â It was sushi heaven for me :)
But our experience was not perfect. A few days later my husband found the bill and discovered they had put an extra Lavender on our bill and two shots of Sake. My husband and I hate Sake, and we know that the salmon is called Sake, but this was under the drink tab, and the salmon sushi was also there under the food tab. Since we did not catch it right away, I cannot take off any points for the food or my experience in general. I thought about calling, but it is too  late now. Considering one of the past reviewers also had a billing issue, please take an extra moment to review your bill and keep track of your purchases. This place is expensive and it adds up quick. We were overcharged about $25. Not happy, but again can't take away points.
One last thing, the bathroom was small, only 2 stalls, and one of the toilets was not flushed, near overflowing with toilet paper. The wastebasket was also overflowing. With two people's bill ending up being $100 or more, the bathroom should be in much better repair.
You know what I like? Â Places that have happy hour on Friday evenings, and Crave delivered just that.
For me, sushi is a novelty of sorts. Â You eat it and can get quite full quite quickly, but 2 hours later, you're hungry again, but when you share 3 rolls and an order of calamari sticks and a seaweed salad together, it makes for a decent meal.
A lot of emphasis is put on the atmosphere and plating of dishes.  Very modern, which isn't my favorite decor, but it's a restaurant, not my house, and it looked nice  My friends entree of the shrimp, while it looked incredible, well 3 (large) pieces of shrimp wouldn't be nearly enough for me (but that's why other things are ordered I guess). Â
The calamari sticks were delicious, as my friend commented "this must have been one big octopus". Â The sushi I ordered (spicy tuna, spicy scallop and tuna crunch) was tasty, although one roll (spicy scallop I think?) was beyond spicy and the seaweed salad was a tad heavy on whatever "dressing" they used, but again, happy hour = happy Rebecca.
I was going to give this place 3 stars instead of four but I was impressed with how our bill situation was handled so I bumped it up to four stars. Â The food itself was good - some standard and some trendy sushi served in an upscale lounge setting.
I went with two friends and after ordering a few rolls, we went back and ordered one more  - a volcano roll.  However, as soon as we placed that order our waitress disappeared for 20 minutes.  Up to that point the service had been great.  When the "roll" finally arrived it was more of a deconstructed plate consisting of 4 stacks of the ingredients - not so great for sharing between 3 people so we just left the final stack on the plate.
When the manager saw the plate that had been served to us, he came over to our table and explained that they were training a new chef and the roll was just "practice" and not meant for customers. Â He promptly took the roll off our bill and gave us a 25% discount in addition! Â We weren't even planning to raise the issue ourselves so that was a nice surprise!
This place should be in Vegas, but for some reason it is in Michigan!
When I walked into the restaurant, I felt so under dressed in my jeans and tennis shoes. It was so nice! I was shocked at how nice it was. I seriously thought it was a Las Vegas restaurant.
We were greeted by the manager I believe and sat on one of the couches. The service was so good. The waitress answered all our questions and the manager came up to check up on us. The food came out promptly and in order. The prices are good considering how nice the place was. There was an extensive menu. Too much to order in one sitting.
We ordered the Manhattan and gem rolls, both very good, but I liked the gem roll better. Â
This is the place you go to for a birthday! It is so nice! I wish I lived in Michigan to throw my birthday here.
I LOVE sushi and Crave has pretty good sushi. They've got some inventive rolls (with a Mediterranean flava), a decent selection of traditional rolls and nigiri, and a wide variety of tasty sounding non-sushi entrees and specials for those afraid to get rawsome.
The edamame comes warm and coated with coarse sea salt (the best!), the hot and sour miso soup has a nice spicy edge to it. Perfect appetizers (and decently sized to share amongst 2-3 people). Today I enjoyed a Big Apple roll (crab, spicy tuna, seared salmon, apple and a caviar chili sauce), California roll (very tasty snow crab, no imitation going on here), and a salmon avocado roll. The special rolls can be pricey (around $13 for one but they do come with about 8 huge pieces) but if you're going traditional you can get 2 for about $9 bucks and and 3 for $12.
They have a great drink menu and a nice selection of wine (including champagne/sparkling), sake, beer, and martinis. The space if modern and clean; the tables comfortable. If you're here for some snacks and drinks they've got couches and bar seating which can accommodate big groups. The service is snappy and they're all pleasant and helpful.
My only complaint? My traditional rolls today fell apart. Blerg. HUGE pet peeve of mine at sushi joints. Tighten up those rolls and I might give this place the 5 star treatment!
Hands down some of the best sushi I have had in the midwest. Â I have been coming to crave since its inception. Â It was my most recent visit, however, that compelled me to review. Â
Crave has undergone quite a few changes in the five or so years it has been open. Â The most recent and notable was the menu redesign. Â In addition to some outstanding sushi, their entrees have converted to "tapa-style" offerings. Â Personally, I love the idea because I am usually stuffing my face with so much sushi that I don't have room for anything else. Â This time we tried both the Ahi and Watermelon Napoleons and were not disappointed. Â The Ahi Tuna was served on a filo chip and garnished with sesame, greens, and a sweet wasabi drizzle. Â Sweet wasabi? Â Amazing! Â The Watermelon Napoleon really took the cake, however. Â Slices of watermelon with a balsamic reduction, dried cherries, kalamata olives, feta cheese, and micro greens... strange, creative, and superb!
On to my favorite part...the sushi. Â Now, let me say...Crave's sushi is not for the traditionalist. Â Many of the rolls are heavy and have very decadent ingredients. Â They are fusion at its finest and are a meal in themselves. Â To me, it is the imaginative selections and pairings that make the sushi as special as it is. Â The favorite of the evening was the "Manhattan Roll," Â king crab, shrimp tempura, and asparagus, topped with spicy tuna, masago, scallions and a sweet unagi drizzle. Â Heavenly. Â
The drinks are to be noted as well. Â Excellent martini and saketini selections. Â The wine list has improved over the years, and has some decent selections on it. (predictable but functional) Â Good sake selection. Â The service, which took a downturn a few years after opening has risen again to a high standard. Â Helpful, knowledgeable, and fun!
Great food, cool/hip atmosphere, and creative drinks all contribute to a fun experience here. Â If you are looking for a transport to the coast for the evening, this is it. Â And as places on the coast go, bring the pocketbook. Â You will spend some money, but it will be worth it.
This is definately one of my favorite places to eat when I go to visit Detroit. Â I love the quality of the fish here (especially the Toro). Â You would have never thought to put great sushi and Detroit in one sentence but Crave has managed to pull it off. Â The ambience is nice in there: high ceilings, black granite tables, lounge style seating, a private dining room and cool Mosaic tile bar that extends to the top of the wall.
The service is always a pleasant experience, and everyone there knows their stuff about the menu. Â Make sure you try the Chilean Sea Bass! It is fantastic! Â Another must is the La Jolla roll and Manhattan Roll. Â Both are some of my favorite rolls of all time and I have eaten sushi at probably 100 different restaurants across the country!
Way to go Crave! Can't wait to come back and do it all over again!
About 4 years ago, I would've given Crave almost 5 stars just for the awesome $1 sushi lunch special. Â But now that special is gone and the prices are little bit too high.
Of course sushi is an expensive food in first place. Â I usually don't eat cheap sushi since it's probably not fresh. Â However, one of the times I went, a group of 3 of us spent $130 including tip. Â Only one of drank and it wasn't much.
The sushi prices hurt this place and they might not last long if the prices don't go down. Â Especially since "O Sushi" opened up few blocks down offering great sushi for lower price.
The ambience and decor is modern-trendy. Â Lot of modern furniture and white and dark brown motif. Â It tries to look like a fancy LA or NYC restaurant. Â It's actually pretty nice inside but it's missing some warmth. Â
The staff is okay. Â Not the friendliest staff but they do the job okay. Â The sushi chefs are pretty good at what they do. Â If you sit by the sushi bar, they sometimes let you try some sushi for free and give you some good recommendations.
One note: Â I have this thing where I only eat sushi prepared by asians. Â Real sushi chefs go through many years of training to be good at what they do. Â Crave has sometimes a young american sushi chefs and maybe he had years of training in Japan or Korea but I doubt it. Â Sorry but I'm a sushi snob sometimes on the way it's made.
Well it sounds like it's lot of negative comments about Crave but they do make pretty decent food. Â Not the best but it's good. Â I recommend "O Sushi" if you're in the area but if you want to impress an out of towner or impress someone on first date, then Crave might be a better choice.
Very elegant Japanese-American Restaurant. Notice that when I wrote American, I meant the food is great but not very authentic Japanese. Â
The price is way too pricey. Â Nevertheless, I still like the atmosphere and the setting of the restaurant. Â
It is nice to take your date to there. Â Not to mention, the dessert is really good. Â Just take your pick! Â I would order all of them if I have the chance.
Overall the service is average but the food is good.
The price is the only reason I couldnt give Crave a full 5 stars. The tempura california roll and the manhattan roll have a spicy kick yo' mama sauce but it finishes nicely with a manchurian saketini. The warm burn between the alcohol and spicy sauce fill your belly and cause this uncontrollable urge to do the five year old "i got some ice cream and you  can't have none" dance.
Yes I crave Crave but 16 dollars a roll just seems a bit much.
The best thing I have had here is sushi lunch I picked up.
I have three time had terrible service. and they did not seem to care at all.
Yes it is nice to have an "up scale" looking place here, but a very important element of upscale is helpful and knowledgeable servers.
We tried a few times hoping it would get better. Of course it did not.
:(
What a bummer
Crave Roll....california roll with slices of ripe strawberry. Maybe they tried it for a novel promotion idea, its delicious. I am a big sushi fan, I always rate the quality by the eel roll and spicy tuna. Both are done excellent here, seasoned just right and very fresh...tight rolls but not too tight and the wasabi has good zing...old wasabi powder loses its heat when turned into paste. They also have a good selection of cooked entrees one night a friend and I sampled quite a few dishes.
Everything is immaculate and beautiful including the gorgeous bathrooms, flat screen tvs in miniature fixed in the hallway, and perfect 'posing' music. (music that makes you feel as if you are on a magazine cover) You will take gorgeous pics in here too the background is white on a dark floor with chrome and wood everywhere...its never too full and set up great for groups or couples.
Voting Crave the Best for Atmosphere and Taste.
If you have read any of my previous reviews you are well aware of the fact that I am certainly not a food critic. I don't spend tons of money dinning out because food goes in one end and out the other. It's like flushing money down the toilet, literally. If I'm dinning it's usually business or date night.
On to Crave. I dined here a couple of times with friends. I am not a fan of Japanese food but I loved the atmosphere. I always have a salad when I go. On my most recent visit our waitress was pleasant and courteous.
My BFF loved her food. She said her sushi was great and so were her tuna rolls. When I dine here it's never over crowded which is pleasing to me because I hate waiting. I've been here for a couple of holiday events which were always pulled off with class.
If you like Japanese food with a great ambiance I suggest you check out Crave.
Do you know what Crave is? It's a place where people who think this is what rich people eat like.
The chairs are plastic, how classy can this place be? The waitress was nice, but she rushed us. The moment we ate the last bite our plates were gone and the check was on the table. Can we have a moment to at least enjoy our dinner? The atmosphere is CHEESY and it feels uncomfortably sterile. I definitely felt like I was eating at a night club... during the day.
And now, the crimes that were committed. Their sushi is not unique, the only thing that they do to "twist it up" is pouring different sauces onto the rolls, masking the flavors of the fish. Disgusting. The spicy tuna roll was more cucumber than tuna, as were other rolls -- the filler took over the fish. My precious rainbow was covered in this nasty sour teriyaki sauce totally masking the fish.
And now, a pledge to myself, I solemnly swear I will not eat at a sushi place that sells puny rolls at an astronomical amount unless I am 100% certain that the chefs are gods and the fish was killed that day.
That said, next time I need to blow that much on sushi, I'm going to Ronin where the rolls are cheaper, better made, and focus on the taste of the deliciousness of the fish.
Sushi is unbelievable.Atmosphere is just as good. Great people, music, and parties. I've been spoiled to live nearby and have taken advantage of it as much as possible. The owners, servers, bartenders, and management treat everyone that comes in there like family.
Servers and bartenders have all been friends of mine and are definitely what sets this place over the edge.
I'm gonna help Quinn out with something he left out. The Duck is an f'n necessity.
The sushi here is absolutely divine...and so are the martini's. If you get there between 5-7 M-Sat the drinks and the sushi is half off...not that it makes it a cheap meal...you'll just eat more. :-)
The atmosphere is cool. They have featured DJ's that rock the turn table. Nice swanky place to impress a date.
If you bring alot of friends you can hang out on the couches outside....or inside. Has a very LA feel....just a really cool place.
