Whenever I make the trip up to northwestern or central Vermont, or even the Northeast Kingdom, I always seem to pass through the small town of Bristol. Â As it turns out, when I passed through Bristol today, and since there aren't many food choices within a 10-15 mile radius of Bristol, I decided to have lunch at one of the establishments in town. Â As a result, I decided to choose to dine at Cubbers, which I believe has been around since 1975. Â
Cubbers seems to do most of their business in pizza, subs and sandwiches, but of course, there are some soups, salads and specials as well. Â I decided to order a Junebug chicken sandwich, which features a chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo on a toasted roll. Â I also had a hamburger mac soup and washed it down with. Â I thought the food was tasty, and while I thought the service was a little slow, they did bring the food right to my table that I was waiting at.
I've been eating at Cubbers since I was a kid - and they are consistent. Â Their food has gone through very few changes since the 1970's - and this is a good thing! Â Their pizza has always been good (not the best I've ever had, but good for small town Vermont), their house dressing has always been delicious, their homemade soups and quiche are always really good, and they always have a good selection of different casseroles. Â Plus their subs are pretty good too. Â Cubbers knows what they are doing, and they do it well...
Review Source:Cubbers has been around since I can remember. Â I think the pizza at Rockydale is a little better, but that may be a matter of taste. Â The service is fine, they are always busy, it is a decent place to get the family together. Â Their Veggie pizza comes with generous amounts of vegetables. Â The spinach salad has loads of soft bacon. Â I'm not a big bacon fan, but I imagine crisp would be better (or none at all). Â I like that you can come in and sit and hang out as long as you want - that has always been their vibe and I guess it always will be. Â Or carry out to the park across the street while the kids play. Â It's the cornerstone restaurant in Bristol, although Snaps is making their way too!
Review Source:The microwave sits where you can see it from the dining area and it was in constant use the entire time we were there. Â No restaurant should have a microwave that gets used that much. Â They put the sandwiches in the pizza oven to get them toasty, which is great, but the meat and vegetables were soft and I'm pretty sure they heated them in the microwave before they put the sandwich in the oven. We should have gotten pizza because I doubt that gets microwaved. Â The salad should have been good but the greens had picked up some refrigerator flavor. Â They were crisp and fresh but they just had a funk to them. Â This meal should have been better. Â A toasty sandwich, a crisp salad and some decent beer will usually merit a good rating but the details were all off. Â If they chuck that microwave in the dumpster and start treating their produce better they could be worth a 4 star review , but they're too much of a mixed bag to merit anything more than 2.
