I don't get the hype at all. We tried DK Sushi because Yelp had so many positive reviews. The service and atmosphere were average, but the food was atrocious. Tiny, tiny rolls for six bucks with almost ZERO fish??? What the hell did I pay for? Our bill was over 50 bucks and we left there still hungry. Seriously, the sliver of yellowtail in that roll made me see red. Don't waste your time here. Drive up north and check out Hanabi's happy hour.

Well, my boyfriend and I ventured in here last week and low and behold, witnessed Karaoke night at DK Sushi.
I wanted to try a new place and had read all the reviews on yelp so I thought eh, why not? The sushi was ok. I don't know how else to describe it. They have a pretty small menu, though the fish looked and tasted fresh, it just didn't wow me or my boyfriend.

Since moving to Austin, I've come to expect the off the wall, odd behavior where ever I go but I had not witnessed anything like Karaoke night. The owner got on stage, dropped some f bombs and told anyone who didn't like his softcore porn to get the hell out (oh, did I mention that there were two big flat screen tv's showing naked chicks?).
Food- It was ok, the fish was fresh but nothing really stuck out as being amazing. We prefer Sushi Niichi or Kome but if you are looking for a place to have a few drinks, decent sushi and watch softcore porn with 20 other strangers, come on down.

I LOVE sushi, I mean I LOVE sushi ! So I might be bit picky since I ve eaten sushi all over the World, anywhere I go I always look for a sushi place. This restaurant didnt deliver the experience I was looking for; food nor atmosphere nor service. Sushi rolls were okay, but definitely nothing special (and  believe me I have tried most of the rolls off the menu, my check was over $100 for 2 and nothing wowed me, not even I was really enjoying it). Dont see how other people are so impressed with this place, solid 3 stars is what they are !

By far one of the worst dining experiences of my life (besides the company I was with). My boyfriend and I went with our friends on a double date. Everything except for the conversation was a total disaster. When we first got there ordering was a bit complicated because the rolls have little to no description. Mike's roll was described as having three different sauces...um ok what else is in it? When asking our server, he barely knew. My friend asked what was in a Spider Roll and as our server stood there scratching his head, I explained to her that it is a roll with soft-shell crab. Oh man! That was hard! All I am going to say about the food is that it is bad and did not taste fresh. The rice was great though! The rolls were bad enough that I only had two bites and gave up.

Service: Horrific. As I explained before, the guy hardly knew what was in certain rolls. He forgot drinks. Water glasses were left empty to the point that we were sharing waters. Best part - they closed an hour early??? While we sat there, with no food, they decided to start closing. A woman came in to eat and they quickly turned her away. She bravely asked why they would close so early when they stay open until 10 and our server told her the sushi chef has a family emergency. Well if that seemed true, that would be totally understandable. But, both chefs were back there hysterically laughing and then sat outside hanging out after forgetting to make one of our rolls.  Last call at 8:50 for the kitchen and the bar? Yeah we will take 3 glasses of wine at once please.

Horrible experience. I feel bad for the owner because I doubt he knows this is what happens when he is not around. Unless they change management or something, I definitely will not return to waste money there again.

Tucked away in a pretty crappy looking strip mall is DK Sushi.

The service here was great, guys behind the sushi bar were nice and attentive. The food was just meh, staple items like spicy tuna were just whatever, nothing special at all and honestly not really worth the dough (even though it was cheap).

I did read alot of reviews talking about karaoke night but apparently that no longer exists. I could see this being a fun place to come back for a few sake's but likely wont return.

Recommend if you live nearby and want something quick!

After realizing I seem to give out to many fine star reviews I too wanted to star being stricter,  but I can't argue with this place. Ever since my boyfriend came back from Japan he has been craving authentic Asian food, and this place came as close as huge could ask for.

As for me, I'm new to all of it but even I loved the food here. The atmosphere itself was enough to get us to come back but after trying everything I have no doubt ill be recommending this place for weeks. Can't wait to being my roommate and try some more things!

I'm giving DK five stars based mostly on it consistently delivering a good experience. This is no fancy sushi restaurant, just a little hole in a tiny strip mall down South 1st.
But it's authentic, the staf is charming, and the food is good. I guess pricing is like any run-of-the-mill sushi place (it is, after all laboriously hand-made on site). If their pricing is a problem, try lunch. The specials are a smoking deal.

I liked this place. The Korean food tasted like actual Korean food not watered down Americanized Korean food. It's small but I liked it. Good service.

The staff is so cute and friendly.

Some of the worst sushi and sashimi I've ever had.  Rolls were small, but heavy on the rice to fish ratio (which was actually a good thing because the fish was right at the point where it was starting to get funky).  I won't call it inedible, but definitely the lowest level of freshness you could eat without getting sick.  Not fresh + diminutive portions + high prices = 3 reasons not to go.

And now that I've read about the habitual sexual assaults on patrons by owner = +1 More reason!  (I'm a little surprised that Texas men allow their women to be treated like that.  I wouldn't--and I'm from what Texans consider a pussy-ass state.)

I am a huge fan of great Sushi Bars. This really is a place to just head to and relax with a close group of friends and forget any troubles. The sushi does not blow you away, but the good times will. The service is wonderful and you can expect to go more than once!

I went to this place because the reviews were good about it, but I have to say food is not bad and the place is really clean and it has good atmosphere. I give only 2 stars to the service because my friend and I were waiting for 2 California rolls for 40 minutes no kidding! And it was not full house at all..

I've been in Austin for a year and tried 5 different sushi places. This is by far my favorite! They have plenty if options, not only on sushi and various Korean dishes but even seating choice (booth, bar, table or even Japanese style table)

The atmosphere was great!  You could tell the whole staff gets along which makes for a comfortable experience.
The music was pop-like but authentic. If you're in view of their amazing fish tank it almost seems like the fish flap their fins to the beat!

I asked a lot of questions about the rolls (being as I'm picky) and our server was very helpful, patient and never made me feel rushed. He greeted us with a smile and never lost that happy face the whole time we were there.

Honestly, a hidden gem deep in south Austin. If it wasn't for you yelp, I would have missed something spectacular.

But I didn't. And my heart, and stomach, thank D K and yelpers for my discovery.

Not only does this place serve killer Sushi AND Korean food, but the environment is great. On your right, traditional floor-style seating. On your left, tables and a Sushi Bar.

I ordered a bit of everything, from Sake to Sushi to Kimchi. The fish is fresh, the Kimchi is spicy, and the Sake is smooth. The wait staff is very kind, and are another reason I will be coming back (and soon).

The best part, however, was the music. K-pop bumping throughout the entire meal, just loud enough to compliment  conversation. I found my self groovin' and chewin' throughout the meal. The music was so entertaining, I shazam'd a song and created a spotify radio station that always puts my girlfriend and I in a good mood during a long drive or stuck in traffic.

I stand corrected, my heart, stomach, and ears thank you, D K Sushi. Well done. See you soon.

That place is really damn good and the prices are great too. I think out bill was $43 for BOTH of us. We had a sushi chef's choice sampler, a tempura appetizer, miso soup, beer, a very large Saki, some sort of complimentary fried cream cheese thing and orange slices. Those of you that like sushi know that that's a killer deal.

I've eaten there other nights and all of their rolls are great- The Mexican Orgasm- The 69er, The Sex on the Beach.

The bottom line is that all of their Sashimi and ingredients are clean and fresh tasting- so everything is good.  The tempura shrimp was absolutely perfect.  Don't forget to eat the tail!  The atmosphere is nice and the service is great.

    DK's rocks!

Never been for the karaoke, but this is my go-to for vegetarian sushi.

The best selection of vegetarian sushi is at Banzai, up at 39th and Lamar. But when you're south, D K will do. 2-3 veg rolls and you'll be fine.

The real sushi is also ok, says my husband.

The interior is nice, kinda quirky, and makes for a fun, relaxed, reasonable weekday meal.

I'm a vegetarian.  This fact greatly limits my sushi choices.  Most places have a couple choices which tend to be less than great.  DK Sushi also had only a few options but when my vegitable roll showed up at the table, I found a roll with more ingredients and much more flavor than I had experienced before.  It was nice to see so much effort put into what is always a mundane roll.

While I came for sushi,  ill come back for the Korean menu.  I had the bibimbap (minus the beef) and was very impressed.  Im looking forward to trying more dishes in the future.

Aside from the food, the staff was attentive and more than happy to help me when i had questions, and the atmoshphere was great...casualnyet cozy.  Illmbe returning to DK very soon.

This was an impulse stop based on the closer place to me with sushi.  It ended up being one of the best choices I made all week.

First, I love the traditional seating.  It is fun to take off your shoes and sit on the ground.  Granted I wish they had a mandatory foot wash station (hey even I needed it) I really liked that they had that.

The food was even better.  We had chef choice sushi, and they chef treated us great.  That along with a pair of sushi rolls and an appetizer.  Food was fresh, great tasting, and very well priced.  I feel I have to come back for a karaoke night.

Came where with some friends as part of our celebration of the end of a tough school year. We were seated in the tatami style room where the table looks ridiculously low until you realize there is a pit underneath for your legs. The walls of this section were drawn on by the customers and a couple of sharpies were located on a small ledge behind us (nice to see the owners letting the customers have some fun with their restaurant's decore). The hostess was friendly and checked in every 5-10 minutes to see if we had decided on our meal as we looked through their menu. She also refilled our waters throughout the meal which was nice (attentive service). Ok, down to the food.

I got the Escolar (2 pcs), the salmon roll, and the Sex on the Beach. The Escolar was nice, buttery, and fresh. The salmon roll was a bit small, but alright. The Sex on the Beach consisted of eel, avocado, (and here my memory is failing me) I think tuna* and salmon*. Point being it didn't wow me with flavor or the combination of ingredients. The sushi was also a bit pricey (not by a large amount).

All in all, the service was good, but the sushi wasn't all that special. Unfortunately, this place is a bit far from where I live too and it just isn't good enough to make me want to make the drive. =/

Ok so I had never had Korean food before in my life. Some friends and I went here on a Friday night (no, I haven't been for karaoke night YET) and it was so delicious.

I got pork bulgogi and it was so, so good. I couldn't finish it and was so happy the next day when I had leftovers for lunch. Their array of condiments we got before our meals were delicious. Hard boiled eggs soaked in soy sauce? Yes please.

My friend ordered the plum sake, and I was really jealous that I had ordered a beer instead. Our waitress was SUPER friendly and gave us a lot of great recommendations.

I am totally coming back here.

I've been to the DK on Lamar many times, but this was my first trip to the south DK location.  I was the only customer there because I arrived right when they opened for lunch.  The waitress was very friendly, as was the guy making the rolls.  I ordered a California Roll and a house roll that is an equivalent to a Philadelphia Roll (although I can't remember the name of it).  Both rolls were very tasty, however the California Roll sort of fell apart after I dipped it in the soy sauce.  I ended up using my fingers a lot, which made me glad I was the only customer at the time.

The two rolls cost about $13, more than I would have spent on a Chinese buffet, but the quality is much better.

I won't likely return, simply because I live too far north and the Lamar location is closer, but if it's anything like the Lamar location, I'm definitely a fan.

I live right down the street from here. I don't know why I hadn't gone here before.  Went the other saturday night and had the veggie tempura, which was great.

I've heard all sorts of stories about this place, and the owner in particular-sadly, he was not there and I couldn't have any of these stories validated. The only story I can authoritatively validate is that the tempura is great, the staff are great, the environment is pleasing and the price is right.

"Go ahead, Amber. Go on a Monday; Catch the phenomenally insane karaoke where DK gets plastered and grab-asses the girls. Just don't wear a skirt, and make sure he doesn't name you the 'Designated Drinker.' The 'DD' has to take a sake bomb EVERY TIME someone sings."

So last night, in a skirt, I got named DK's 'Designated Drinker.' The crowd was electric, the service was (understandably) slow, the food was okay, and I only got my ass slapped once.

It was fantastic! I will be back! Word on the street is he's only doing the Monday night karaoke craziness for a few more weeks (I believe the last one is in August), so make a point to catch a legendary sexual deviant in action.

So Ive heard Ive read the reviews, and although it was my first time I thought I knew what to expect from this place. But like someone smarter than me once said "you have to live it to know it." So true. So here is my run down of my Monday Karaoke experience at DK's.

We enter, the place is already packed, it doesn't take a lot to pack the place because it is tiny but as the night progressed this place impressed me with how many drunken bodies it actually can hold.

We order some dumplings and tempura to get started, it was good the veggies could have used some salt but good. We got the Mike roll, the naked dragon roll, the 69 roll, and some other sexually-named roll that I cant remember. All of the rolls were good, the dragon roll being my favorite, it was fresh and spicy with eel and tuna, yum!

About the time we were finishing up dinner out comes DK, and wow, what came out of his mouth for the rest of the night had me blushing and laughing simultaneously. He first welcomes everyone one, especially the ladies, "Men don't worry, I wont let anyone touch your women... oh except me, I get full access!" DK picks the designated drunk who must take a Saki bomb shot after every song sung. There was a group of folks there celebrating a friends divorce... pass the bottle of Saki around. It was some body's birthday the next day... pass the bottle of Saki around. When DK came to our table and found we didn't have any glasses for the Saki, "who cares, this is holy water! open up your mouth!" And Saki get directly poured in our mouths. In between smoke breaks people sang karaoke, yours truly still not brave enough, even after DK bit my ear. Mondays here are raunchy, loud, and fun.

Thanks for the great time DK, we will see you next Monday.

I ate here on a whim with my boyfriend that had just gotten into town. We were in the are and after yelping for a sushi spot down south, we decided on DK sushi.

We were promptly greeted and seated. Our drink orders were taken and we ordered miso soup right away since we were both starving.

I stuck to the sushi menu and ordered Krab, yellowtail, and escolar nigiri. Each order comes with two pieces and is around $4-5 per order. All were fresh and flavorful.

He ordered a roll (I didn't sample it but he really liked it) and asked for a recommendation for a Korean entree. After she asked a few questions, he decided on Bul Gal Bi (The Beef Rib). When it was brought to the table, she explained the condiments that were served with the dish which we appreciated since we have never had Korean food and I was slightly intimidated by it when I have seen other people order it. I had no idea what all the little bowls of goodness were for. He really enjoyed it.

We were both stuffed and satisfied and had leftover beef ribs to take home. I believe the total bill was around $50 pre tip.(not exactly sure though because he never lets me pay nor do I ever have a chance to see the total)

I would definitely go back. I would even drive the 5-6 miles outside of my bubble to return. I am looking forward to trying it out during karaoke night.

It's hard to believe that I haven't already written a review for this place. I've been coming here for a couple of years now. It's my favorite "affordable sushi" place in town. The prices are just right, the fish is always fresh and delicious, and the owners and staff are friendly and accommodating. Their salmon sashimi is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, although I do wish the rice on their nigiri wasn't so prone to falling apart from a quick dunk in soy sauce.

I should say that I haven't ever been on a Monday, so I'm not writing about their raucous disco karaoke nights, though I will definitely update when I make it out.

I'm a person that's rarely speechless but from the moment DK got on the mic yelling "I'm gonna slap your a** so hard you'll remember me tomorrow" I just sat back and watched the show. We got there early and had some (tuna, veg, volcano, mexican hand roll) which was all decent. Really enjoyed the volcano as it had this nice spicy warm crab topping of delight. I wanted to lick it off the plate.

DK was everything he was purported to be -- raunchy, hilarious, sake bombing the night away. The setup is this: one microphone in the middle of the restaurant, soft porn playing on the TVs and a pretty limited selection of songs. After your singing selection, DK yells sake bomb and you take one together. There's a designated drinker who takes a sake bomb every time which is to say that person needs to be scraped off the floor at the end of the night.

Do this because it's an experience and it's Austin and because it's Monday. And because it's like nothing you've ever done before.

Why can't sushi restaurants in Austin be consistently good!?!?

We went in on Thursday for lunch (perhaps the issue?) and ordered the same stuff we always do and it just tasted off . . . not fresh at all. Really the only thing that is keeping me from giving DK two stars are the previous experiences here. This was easily two star sushi.

The eel was the worst, but the salmon and the ikura were offensive as well. The volcano roll filling was tough and chewy.

Guess I am going to be labeling DK's as hit or miss. I'll be back, but won't be tolerating another miss . . .

    Service was pleasant and prompt.

I took my dad to DKs Monday night karaoke boob extravaganza of extreme lewdness.

Dej, are you crazy? Are you a glutton for punishment - a masochist, even? Did you intend to subject yourself to scarring, life-altering levels of embarrassment, taking your dad to such an establishment?

No. But dad had been working like a fiend during his "vacation" to help finish up repairs on my kitchen. 45s night sounded fun, but an evening of things he's never (I hope) seen before sounded more worthy of his time.

    Dad learned:
    1. It's fun to watch people trying to read karaoke lyrics when the screen's showing boobs.
    2. How to use chopsticks ("what an gonna do with this thing?"). His steak rolls and rice were gone 9 minutes later ("is good!").
    3. Japanese beer is good.
    4. Sake bombs are strong.
    5. If you drink several sake bombs in rapid succession, you can quickly begin to stand out from the crowd.
    6. DK is a dirty, dirty man.

He vowed to sing on his next visit, and he didn't try the sushi, but on the way home I felt a sense of accomplishment. I also felt the derriere smack I'd received from DK. Not appreciated. But I can't subtract a star; pops had too much fun.

I couldn't have summarized this place better than DK himself did when I went here a few weeks ago in his opening act. "If talking about sex, boobs, girls, or drinking bothers you then get the f*%k outta here.  We have a sushi place in about the worst god%$mn location in the world, so lets all get drunk and have fun!"

To say the least DK is vulgar, but his theatrics are hands down one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life. I watched this guy pull bras off of patrons that were eating there while they sat there drinking their sake bombs and laughing their asses off.  He always wears sunglasses (part of the "sushi pimp apparel" I suppose) and has comedic 80's-style soft porn playing on the TV screens as you stand up in front of the restaurant making a fool out of yourself singing Karaoke. Oh, and don't get up there if you suck..he WILL gong you and make you and the rest of the restaurant do "SAAAAAAAAAKKKKKEEEEBOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMBBBSSS!!!!!!"

Although the location and the sushi suck here its cheap, a time you'll never forget, and well worth the drive down past Ben White on a Monday.

    2 things:
1: DO NOT DRIVE, TAKE A CAB.  Trust me on this, the drive back is a LOT longer than the drive there after you've had a few sake bombs.
     2.  Don't plan on doing anything constructive Tuesday AM. DK has a way of making sure EVERYONE that comes overindulges.

    Enjoy.

As my parents and I approached the address I'd written down for DK Sushi, I felt my stomach starting to knot up. "Am I lost? Where is this place?" I wondered.  Then I caught sight of a little neon sign that simply said "Sushi Bar."  This did not abate my concern, as the little sign was in a tiny, rundown strip center next to an $8 barber shop and a laundromat. Mom and Dad did not look impressed. But we had already arranged to meet friends, so there was no turning back.  Upon entry, we heard a curt "Shoes off!" barked by a woman with a baby strapped to her chest. We didn't dare disobey.  But then we saw my friends smiling at a neat little table sort of embedded in the floor, and I started to cheer up.

As it turns out, DK is a pretty cool place. I'd never eaten at a restaurant where you sit on the floor, but I liked it just fine.  The clean, polished wood floor made for reasonably comfortable seating for our party of 7. Our server seemed flustered and overwhelmed the whole time, but she was pleasant and, after some delays, she did get everyone's order correct.

The kitchen presented all the entrées attractively. The shrimp tempura looked amazing (and huge)! My dad and I don't eat seafood, but the rest of the group liked theirs. My father ordered the beef teriyaki, which was cooked mid-rare (exactly how he wanted it) and served with a sweet, salty sauce. I enjoyed the Yakimando (a Korean meat dumpling appetizer), and the Rock Bi Bim Bab (a Korean dinner with beef, vegetables, rice, topped with an egg). I didn't pay too much attention to prices, but I remember thinking they seemed affordable.

I don't live near this area, so DK won't be my regular go-to place, but I'd eat there again and definitely recommend it to friends in South Austin.

Okay.  So when it comes to DK, it really comes to two things:
    The food.
    And the karaoke.

First, the food:  I'm not thrilled by it.  I don't really like their sushi.  It doesn't taste as...fresh?...as some other places in town.  And their sushi is a lot smaller than some other places and not necessarily cheaper.  I've tried their bulgogi and I think maybe I just don't really like Korean food.  (My husband, on the other hand, LOVES their bulgogi and is there so often that Mrs DK knows his order by heart.  Which I think is kind of awesome.)  If you like Korean food, you might really like DK, but there are certainly better places in town for sushi (albeit, none of them are nearby).

Next, the karaoke.  I've been to karaoke once.  Monday nights.  7:30pm.  But GO EARLY - I think when I went, we got the last table at 6:30?  It is quite an event.  But if you are easily offended, you best try DK Sushi on another night.  DK hosts a completely off-color in every way imaginable karaoke gong-show.  It involves the following (in no particular order):  Karaoke.  Gongs.  Sake bombs.  Butt pinching.  Skirt lifting.  Offensive jokes.  Offensive statements.  A very drunk DK, usually in a 'fro wig.

It's an interesting evening.  Again, worth it at least once unless you are very easy to offend.  But you know, DK is really an equal opportunity offender:  he insults himself as well as makes off-color statements about every race/gender/orientation.

Ladies, if you don't want to be harassed, DO NOT wear a skirt or anything vaguely sexy.  Or watch your liquid intake so you don't have to use the restroom.  Otherwise, your ass is a target.

Went the other night with my bro and a friend.  The sushi was decent, I am curious to go back and check out more.  We had the 69er roll which was excellent and the spider roll. . .good too, and the volcano roll which was pretty gross, but I'm not much of a mayo on my suchi kind of person.  I also had a seaweed salad and some soup.  The sake was just sake, but we ordered warm and I prefer cold.  I've heard Karaoke night is where it's at, so maybe I'll try that next. . ..

Went again. . .still good.  Cold sake this time. . .even better.

    Let me just mention this:
    1. I have only gone to DK sushi on Monday's for Karaoke
    2. I REALLY love sushi. Good Sushi.
    3. I'm a pervert. Not a BAD one, but nonetheless, a perv.

-there, we got that out of the way.

    a) I give DK Sushi 5 stars because I NEVER laugh harder than I do at that place on Monday nights. DK is completely insane and one of the funniest people I have ever heard. I love going to DK Sushi a lot. Its completely out of the way, but its a great time.
    b) The Korean BBQ is really good and I love it. But I'm usually pretty drunk by the time it arrives so whatever.
    c) I almost NEVER eat Sushi on Monday because very few restaurants get their fish delivered on Monday. Some things might keep from Friday to Monday, but I don't really feel like taking my chances.

EDIT: There's another entry for DK, so I'm moving it over from that one to here. Don't judge.

I'm splitting this review into two sections - the food and the infamous karaoke. Also, I'm Korean. Does that make me the most qualified to review this place? Yes.

    Karaoke
    =======
Sexism. Misogyny. Harassment. All of these things wouldn't bother me about DK, except that when I see him, I feel like I'm looking into the future.

The karaoke portion begins with DK going up to the mike and spitting out profanity like he just lost his religion. There's so much profanity that I wondered for a while if he even knew what he was saying. In two hours, he set back the women's rights movement, the gay rights movement, and Tibetan independence (don't ask) about 15 years.

He called our table "a bunch of homos" (four guys, one girl) twice. So what my friend James do? Start a game of gay chicken with DK.

    Hints and rules:
    1. Sit back and have fun. Don't take anything personally, and don't be offended.
    2. Get there early (at least by 6:30 pm). It fills up very quickly, and a lot of people are turned down because it's full.
    3. Either participate, or go with people who will participate.
    4. Ladies, don't wear a skirt or tight pants if you don't want DK to grab you.

Seriously, we saw a group of women standing at the door waiting to sit down, but they ended up leaving. The mom looked horribly offended; the daughter was cracking up.

Also, don't expect a high quality karaoke machine. The thing sounds like a MIDI machine, which is a notch above a kazoo.

I have a former coworker named Ben. He did two things that directly affected me:

    1. He married his Japanese diplomat girlfriend, moved to Portugal, quit his job, and essentially altered my career path, leaving me to become Ben 2.0 at work.
    2. He showed me DK Sushi as a lunch spot.

The next time I see Ben, I will punch him in the nuts (#1) and then hug him (#2).

When I crave kim chee and bulgogi, I go to DK, and it's just like my mom's cooking. Their sushi is decent too - I really can't tell the difference between DK sushi and Umi. I'm also a huge fan of their portion sizes; there's enough food to make you full, yet not too much to either require taking leftovers or put yourself in a coma.

I've taken several interview candidates there for lunch, and it's always been a hit. Even my anonymous supertaster-or-possibly-fussy-nontaster friend honors my people by enjoying the food there.

Now I've only been on Monday nights because I personally like watching people out of their comfort zone and experiencing new things.  You MUST have an open mind and not take offense to sexual/deviant humor to enjoy a Monday night at DKs.  So don't take your kids or super religious friends to this place on Monday...do it another night. (21 and up on Mondays- although once some family snuck in their 19 year old daughter so she could sing and her granny drank her sake for her)

The sushi is a good portion and is pretty good!  Joe the waiter is always attentive and the only setback I recall is having to order most of your stuff at the beginning of the karaoke nights as it gets super busy in the kitchen and if you're hungry, you better put your order in all at once.  The place is rather small, so if you come with a big group, you better come early!  Parking is also limited.

I strongly believe DKs Karaoke night on Mondays is like a game of Truth or Dare...if you come, you have to come to PLAY and prepare to be fully exposed.  So come with some rowdy/brave/open minded friends if you aren't the singer of the group and prepare to listen to DKs broken English, lewd commentary as well as a possible show from your fellow patrons!  Each performance warrants a sake bomb with DK himself after you're gonged and if you're "lucky," DK might sing a Korean song, then at the end of the night pee by someone's car. (unless he picks a "designated drinker" and that poor girl -cause it's ALWAYS a girl- has to take his sake for him)

If you think karaoke, sushi, explicit commentary, and possible sexual harassment is a good time, then DK's on Monday = yes.

This is a Korean-style sushi place. The sushi chefs are decent guys, and the sushi itself isn't bad. But the owner and host of the karaoke nights on Monday, DK, makes this place abysmal in my opinion.

I went to a karaoke night on the recommendation of a friend (guy) who said "it was a lot of fun." DK looked and acted totally drunk, cussing out the audience and talking to several women patrons about what kind of deviant sexual thing he'd like to do to them. Ok, fine. Not my thing, but some people think that's funny.

But then this girl in a halter top walked past, trying to get to the restroom, and DK grabbed her breast. The girl froze for a split second before yanking herself away, tearing her shirt in the process. Many in the crowd laughed, especially the young men, and the girl and her two friends immediately left.

Personally I like to enjoy dinner without witnessing what appears to be sexualt assault. With all the other local businesses in Austin, I don't feel comfortable giving this guy my money.

As far as the sushi goes, I wouldn't say it's in the top tier in Austin. It's ok, but comparing it to other cities (unless L.A. and S.F. have terrible sushi) seems like a stretch.  The sushi is on par with the other middle tier restaurants (Origamai, sushi on 6th, etc.)

Take my advice: go to DK Sushi as soon as you can.  I grew up in Los Angeles, and my boyfriend grew up in San Francisco - trust us.  We know sushi.

The restaurant is completely unassuming.  It's in an ugly, little strip mall called Buckingham Place, nestled between a comic book shop and a Mexican restaurant.  For the longest time, I thought the place didn't even have a name because all you can really see as you drive by is the neon sign on their window that says "sushi."

But it's the best sushi I've had in Austin, and I've been to Korea House and Kyoto.  It's soft-not-rubbery, has a fresh-not-fishy taste, and it's rolled into decently sized pieces.  It's not only good, I also think it's reasonably priced.  If two people each order a sushi combination plate and a drink, and share an appetizer, the bill rings up around $50.  (Other places, the bill seems to come closer to $75.)

But what's a good sushi restaurant without a wild karaoke night?  On Monday nights after 7 PM, you have to be 21 and up to get in.  If you're brave enough, go check it out.  Otherwise, go anytime Tuesday through Saturday.  It will become your favorite, too.

p.s. it's closed Sundays.  I think this is true for most sushi restaurants.
