Meh....heard great things about this place. Not impressed at all. The special sauce on the burgers is some nasty mayonnaise/mustard sauce. I get the burgers dry and add my own sauce at home. I have noticed the taco guy outside on the weekends though. Have yet to try those. Will update when I do.
Review Source:The Dairy Snack Drive-In sits on a lonely dirt lot in a lonely town on a lonely stretch of road. Â It's in these outer fringes of Yelpville where my work often takes me. Â It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to Yelp it. Â
i was here in Parlier (pop 12K) Â a couple of years ago and i'm scheduled to be there again in a few weeks so i'll update this Yelp then; meanwhile, thoughts of the Dairy Shack have been plaguing me lately--
i had driven by this place a few times before stopping; it's 15 miles off highway 99 on the main drag between the nearby 'Big Towns' of Selma and Reedley. Â The Dairy Snack (or Snak, depending on which sign you are looking at) is situated on the agriculture side of the road while the rest of Parlier is on the other side, so it sticks out like a sore thumb. Â What caught my eye about this place is that they feature something called a "Boston Shake". Â
So before i checked it out, i called my friend Ted in Boston and asked him what a Boston shake was-- he hadn't a clue; so i looked it up on the WorldWideWeb and found some diners in the rust belt around Pittsburgh, PA Â that had them on their menu, but alas, no description. Â
The Dairy Snack looks as if it may have been a Dairy Queen at one time in it's life; a beige concrete block, flat-roofed shack with HVAC equipment balanced on top. Â The angled plate glass windows are painted with large illustrations of selected menu items in a futile attempt to grab the attention of autos speeding by. Â It worked on me however; it was a hot late afternoon and i was hungry and I could not resist the persuasion of a huge graphic representation of...A BOSTON SHAKE!
So i pulled in and ordered my Standard of Measure of roadside grub: the Holy Trinity of Burger, Fries and Shake, in this case, a Boston Shake...OK, way too much food-- what you get is a basic 1/4 pound patty with orange cheese and what amounted to a salad on top, fries spilling out of its little white bag, and then they dump more fries (with lots of salt) into the lunch sack after they put the burger in-- and the shake-- this is it folks: a Boston Shake is a regular milkshake with an ice cream sundae built on top... OH... MY.... GOD... a tummy-ache in a foam cup--i was stuffed with dairy & carbs & grease that lasted me 'til breakfast the next day.
Oh one other thing, I asked the teenager behind the counter if she knew why it was called a Boston Shake; she had NO idea, and she really didn't care. Â so don't ask.
