My wife and I went here while staying in town during the St Pattys Day weekend, so naturally looking for a good Irish eatery. We were directed to this place my the hotel desk. My wife ordered corn beef and cabbage. Her potatoes that came with the meal looked like they were left over from the day before, so we sent them back. The next round was better but lacked any flavor at all. The corn beef was so chewy you could barely swallow it. The only thing we really enjoyed was the Guinness stout. So, I give them one star for that. The other is the fact that they took the corn beef and cabbage off the bill voluntarily. UPDATE: the manager actually took the time to contact me about our not-so-pleasant experience. Kudos for that. We will be back later this summer and will give DB McMillian's a second chance.
Review Source:Well most of these reviews were from last year so I suppose management took note because my visit was really good. Â Our waiter was very nice and we tried a wide variety of food and had it "family" style to sample everything. Â Fish & Chips-excellent. Â Bangers and Mash-awesome. Â The best was the Girl Scout Thin Mint cheesecake. It was quiet for a Saturday night but we were there early. Except for the temperature being a little cold where we sat, overall it was a good experience and we will return when next in the area.
Review Source:I really want to like this place because they have really good beers on tap. The atmosphere was kind of fun with live musicians playing Irish music but the temperature was warm as if the air conditioning had stopped working today. I had the fish and chips the fish came out hot and the batter was crunchy and light really quite good. The fries on the bottom of the pile were lukewarm at best and on the top stone cold. They did accept the 50% Yelp coupon that I had for a cheeseburger. Â the fried brie appetizer was good but I couldn't finish it because it came out about 10 minutes after the main meal. Â I'm hoping this was an off night for them because I do want to come back but it will be very easy to choose other places first.
Review Source:I have spoken with management briefly via email to make them aware of my concerns from my most recent visit. It seems there is sincere regret for the poor food quality and hopefully we will go back again next Tuesday and find things have improved.... although if it were up to the bartender Karen I would never be allowed back in there as she felt it ok to personally respond to my complaint even though she is not of manager status, nor was she working at the time of my visit. According to her, I am not welcome there anymore; Apparently it's only ok to write a review about a place (a place in which I am a huge fan and have promoted heavily in my social circles), if its all bells and whistles *rolls eyes*.... Â I trust that management will work on correcting their shortcomings.
Review Source:The food is ok and they do offer a couple of interesting twists (like bangers & Mash calzone). Â It can be very loud and the service is hit or miss. Bottom line: If you're going with friends to listen to music, eat some food, and drink (and aren't on a schedule) then it is good. Â If you're going with the family and are in a rush, then you might try somewhere else.
I think it was better when it first opened but has gone down a little in quality of service. I do like the rueben on ciabatta bread, the DB Chips, and the tempura vegetable appetizer.
There is no two-and-a-half stars or I would have put this place right in the middle or the rating scale as it was neither amazing or terrible. Â I went a couple of weeks ago with a small group and posted a review the same day; I got a personal response from the server that waited on my group, and pulled my review until I had a little time to think about it. Â In my personal response one of the issues addressed was not mine - an explanation on why this establishment is not open on Sundays (I was there on a Tuesday). Â Plus, I still don't buy the explanation for the totally carb free salad (no bread, or crackers with the salad or croutons on it) - sensitivity to gluten intolerant customers. REALLY? In a pub? Customers drop in for the salad and a shot of rum or vodka? Â I am aware of only a few wheat free beers (none are draft beers) and this is a pub. Â Most of the food and alcohol on the menu has carbs.
Granted it was less than a week after St Pat's Day, and yes, I know, it is an Irish Pub, but the smell of stale beer was a bit too much to have with my lunch. Â The food was alright but not amazing. It took three tries to get a fork because I kept getting napkins that were wrapped with only a knife. Â The guys in my party liked their food and had no issues with utensils, but they did get each others order when the food arrived. Â Yes, dear server, I know the older guy in my group said everything was fine, but he is a total gentleman and he would never, ever, EVER, talk back to a lady, even to tell you that something is wrong; plus he's a bit of a flirt, so he will keep the chatter uber friendly.
To tell the truth, I am not a pub kind of person (read my other reviews, you will find no pubs to date (and mostly local businesses)); therefore this is not my kind of place, but it was where the group leader picked because he has been before and the likes it (but he has never posted a review). Â The young lady that responded to my previous post seems to think that her good reviews "somehow do not get posted on Yelp" ....here's what I think: the crowd that enjoys this establishment are on one of the other ratings sites - I found it to be rated in the top 10 choices to dine in California MD on one of the other sites (the site the group leader found it at). Â Dear Management - you need to know your audience, it seems to be the other rating sites users! Â PS: I have a preference for trying the local places whenever I visit someplace new...I have never been one for the chain restaurants. Â
If you enjoy this establishment, my review is not going to change that; if you have never been, give it one chance. Â As for me: Been there, Done that.
When DB's opened it was a great, happening place to go after work. Â Most of my friends complain that the food isn't very good, however, and they are tired of hearing the same musicians every weekend.
I find the food to be just ok. Â None of it tastes quite like real, traditional Irish food, and the cooks never seem to clean the oven properly. Â I occasionally order a pizza (obviously not Irish...) and find black, burnt crumbs from the oven are stuck to the underside of the pizza crust. Â Last time they tried to clean the oven before cooking my pizza, and I ended up with a piece of the metal brush sticking out of my cheese and still had black crud on the bottom of the pizza.
The bartenders and waitstaff are pretty good, and, overall, I like the atmosphere of the bar area. Â They offer the back room for parties, but I'm told they don't cut you any slack on the pricing for groups. Â It is one of the few places around SOMD where they have Guiness on tap, however, and the owner/managers sincerely care about customer satisfaction.
Great atmosphere and staff, but food was horrible. Fish and chips was half raw and nasty-we felt terrible the day after. Even my kids fish and chips was undercooked and smelled terrible. I sent it back and prayed he wouldn't get sick (he didn't). But 1 star for service, entertainment, and good Guinness.
Review Source:There's not a lot of competition in Lexington Park. DB McMillan's is better than most bars in the area, but that's a battle it wins largely by default. For an Irish-type pub, it has the usual beers you'd find in such places (Guinness, Smithwick's, house beer, Bud/Miller/etc.), but not much else. The menu is also standard fare, although I will say - their shepherd's pie is one of the best I've ever had. The staff was amazingly friendly, as was the clientele. Half of the restaurant has booth seating that's well lit, near windows (few people sit here), while the bar area is dark and closed in. It certainly feels like a dive, which is odd, since it used to be a family-style restaurant named Perkins. The prices were a little higher than I'd like a dive to charge, but I can't complain.
Review Source:I just skimmed over the previous reviews before starting my own review and was pretty surprised. Â I gathered though that the restaurant is under new management which would explain the experiences that my fiance and I have had there recently since we "discovered" the restaurant. Â But I digress... Â on to my review!
Two weeks ago while getting my hair cut it came up that my fiance and I recently went to a Celtic Festival here in Southern Maryland. Â The woman cutting my hair immediately asked if we'd tried DB McMillan's. Â I told her nope, we had avoided it because my fiance, who has lived her in SMD for many years knew the building had housed a string of failed restaurants so we didn't bother trying the most recent attempt. Â She enthusiastically advised me to give it a shot, so we did that night. Â Boy am I glad we did! Â The food was excellent and the service, provided by the vivacious Wendy, was top notch. Â I had the Shepard's Pie and my fiance went with the cheddar and granny smith apple sandwich with "phoenix" sauce (raspberry sauce) with onion ring on the side. Â It was all absolutely delicious. Â The battered onion rings, we both agreed, were the best we'd ever had. Â My fiance's sandwich was on an excellent tender ciabatta and she really enjoyed it. Â My Shepard's Pie was hearty, perfectly seasoned, authentic, and filling. Â We ended our meal with a couple slices of the restaurant's homemade pie-- she had the mint cookie pie and I had an Irish creme pie. Â The best way I can describe the Irish creme pie is to say it was like the best Boston Creme Pie I've ever had, but doused in Irish Creme. Â It might be my new favorite desert.
Now I can rave about the food and service for awhile, but keep in mind  that was just one visit so it might have been a fluke, but it wasn't.  Like I said, that was about two weeks ago-- we were so impressed with the place that we have eaten there 3 more times since then for dinner and take out for lunch once.  For take out we both got fish and chips that tasted like they'd been purchased from a street vendor in Dublin.  The bartender also impressed me by thoughtfully packaging our food so the fried food didn't get soggy from the steam.  The cole slaw was also tasty and unique (neither of us had seen cole slaw with corn in it before, my fiance wasn't as impressed by the little pops of unexpected sweetness in the slaw, but I personally enjoyed it and found it refreshing).  The fries were well seasoned and had that wonderfully "limp", but not quite soggy consistency of good British "chips" that goes so well with malt vinegar.  The fish was perfectly cooked, tender, flaky, thickly battered in a savory Guinness (At least I think it was Guinness) batter.  The menu didn't specifically state what type of fish it was, which would typically set off some warning bells for me, but my best guess is it was the ubiquitous cod.  (Not that it really matters anyway, I read a sobering article earlier today that stated that as much as 70% of the seafood served in restaurants is mislabeled or a substitution of a cheaper fish apparently because 84% of America's seafood is imported and less than 2% is inspected.  But once again, I digress...)
For our other visits we have explored further into the menu. Â I've had a burger with whiskey bbq sauce, thick cut cheddar, and shaved ham that was quite good, especially when paired with a Strongbow or Magner's Cider. Â The burger itself tasted freshly made out of good quality 80/20 beef, well seasoned and cooked perfectly to the medium rare that I ordered it at. Â We both also tried DB McMillan's "Irish" club sandwich-- corned beef, turkey, swiss, tomato, and a delicate horseradish mayo that didn't overpower the flavor of the meat at all, once again on their delicious ciabatta.
All in all I'd say, if you've never been to DB McMillan's, don't let the older reviews scare you, and if you have been to DB McMillan's, give them another shot because things seem, pretty clearly to me, to be far better than they were in the past. Â Oh, one last caveat to this review, each time we have gone to the restaurant we have been seated in the restaurant portion, we have not tried the bar itself yet (although we have been able to overhear the live Irish singer in there a couple times) so I can't speak to the quality of the bar or the mixed drinks since all we've had beverage-wise was soda or bottled Cider, so your mileage may vary if you're in the bar.
Oh, one last thing, prices-- they're pretty reasonable. Â Everything we've eaten has been under $14.00 per person, some of it under $10, and we've also left full or with leftovers (especially onion rings- they give your a veritable avalanche of onion ring for the $0.75 upcharge).
Well, I HAVE to come to southern maryland for work. Â Trust me, not fun. Â So when ever I'm here, i always come to this place. Â Decent drink and pretty good food depends if you're lucky. Â I have never seen this place busy except TWO YEARS ago for one day. Â But its pretty low-key and people are pretty nice. Â Bartender Karen and Greg are pretty koo peeps. Â Soon as I walk in, my beer is already being poured. Â DO NOT GET THEIR OYSTER or OYSTER SHOOTER... awful. Â At times, food are hit or miss. Â It can be decent, but it can be pretty bad. Â If you are looking to meet new people and wanted to be in "happening" place... NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! Â If you want to relax and just chill, then grab a drink. Â Honestly, don't come to southern maryland :)
Review Source:In town on business...really hate chain restaurants (Cheeseburger in Paradise or Outback?...really?) Â Then we spotted this place. Â I did not check Yelp reviews before heading in... I'm glad I didn't because we would have moved along. Â
Our server was friendly, but did seem to be relatively new up the whole waitress thing...the selection looked good, and the prices quite reasonable. I was plenty happy with the Bangers and Mash and I was assured that my coworker's Boxty (*sp?) was very good.
All-in-all, our's was not the experience I would have expected from the reviews on Yelp. Thank goodness.
So I haven't lived in Southern Maryland long enough to know which restaurants preceded DB's but I am well aware of their failures. I never could quite understand how a restaurant with such a prime location (Wildewood Plaza, right next to a huge development of houses, condos and apartments in the most popular part of Lexington park) could never stay in business...
...then I visited DB McMillans. Now, I know William L. says this place is under new ownership, but I have been informed otherwise. And if my informants are telling me the truth, then these people really need to get into a new business because DB's is not likely to last much longer.
I have been there twice. The first time was about 2 days after they opened and it was okay. I got a burger and fries. Not your typical Irish fare but I wasn't feeling entirely adventurous. No huge complaints there...other than the fact that I couldn't hear myself over the dude singing Irish songs in the middle of the bar. Don't get me wrong, the guy was good....it was just so effing loud.
Second time I felt a little bit more adventurous. I had been told that the granny smith cheddar melt was really good so I decided to give it a try. I also ordered the seafood chowder as an appetizer and a Stella Artois. The only item I finished was the beer.
Now, if you know Lauren Klatt then you know that she will scarf down anything from the finest filet mignon to the cheapest brand x canned ravioli. Lauren does not pass up food. Yet Lauren did not finish ANY of her DB McMillans meal. (I still uphold my reputation, however, by arguing that none of the items listed above could actually qualify as "food".)
The cheddar melt was cold and the cheese was not quite melted. The soup was extra fishy (I know I know it was seafood chowder, but I know a good seafood chowder taste and this was NOT it) and cold. The beer was....you guessed it.....COLD! Ugh! :)
So one star based on the cold beer. Even the decently cool bar does not quite earn DB's a second star. I shan't be back for a third try. Maybe next time this building should be turned into a bank.
Where to start? This place is definitely a decent place to grab a Guiness, but the food is awful. I have had the opportunity to have many things on the menu and none if them were edible. They used to have a great brunch on the weekends, but the last time I visited, it had declined in quality.
Review Source:I am not sure where to start on this one.
I ate here roughly 6-7 months ago. It was so bad I was unable to erase the experience from my memory.
To start, the ambiance is that of a high school cafeteria. Outside of the bar area it was completely unadorned from the walls to the tables. Now if this place were primarily a bar I suppose I could understand that, however, the bar in itself is too small to make that claim.
Service was slow, from the looks of it that evening I would say the place was at about 70% capacity. Our waitress was fine from what I remember.
For an appetizer we got the mussels. Being as close as this place is to the bay I thought maybe it could be a good pick. Wrong. Mussels were tiny and soaked in a broth that tasted like Milwaukee's Best and butter.
I ordered the rib-eye. Medium rare with the cabbage on the side. I don't go into an establishment like this and order a steak and expect something I might get at a Ruth's Chris or Morton's but what I was served was far from anything that even resembles a steak. It was like they took a large piece of beef jerky out of the bag and left it on a plate sweating under a heat lamp for half a day. Again, I wasnt expecting greatness with this order. But when you charge $19 for a steak is it out of line for it to be cooked properly and edible?. The cabbage was surprisingly decent, but I am a sucker for steamed cabbage.
My girlfriend got the "Shrimp Boxty". Which tasted more like box than it did shrimp. If the shrimp weren't so tiny and 50% mud vain maybe it wouldn't have been as bad. She too enjoyed the cabbage.
I suppose if you were just going here for happy hour with a good group of people for beers it could be overlooked. But never again will I set foot in there.
All in all it was overpriced and lackluster to say the least. Save yourself the money and trouble and walk down the way to the Outback or Cheeseburger in Paradise if you are dining in the Wildewoode Shopping Area. For your money you will get better food, service and atmosphere unless all you want is cabbage.
