Not expensive but very good food.  Not greasy as you would think of soul food is what I will say.  Come try it out if you are near Xscape theaters or just in Brandywine and want something besides Mexican, Seafood, etc.  THe price is very good and service was great.  Be aware this is a non-alcoholic place of business in case you need to satisfy your meal with an adult beverage as well.

I was disappointed after reading the glowing reviews and having some friends mention this place.
    The good:
    1. Nice facility, clean (new building), nice ambiance.
    2. Have a very nice bar area but not serving alcoholic beverages yet. (Perhaps waiting on a liquor license approval)
    3. Energetic & attentive servers but inexperienced. (This could be good or bad).

    Not so good (the bad):
    1. My fried chicken breast was so dry I had to spit in back onto the plate (after chewing a long time). I ordered 1/2 of chicken which is small in this place (definitely not a Purdue size chicken). A quarter would not have been enough meat and I am not a big meat eater.
    2. The Mac & Cheese is 2nd rate. I've had much better lots of places. Of course my expectations were high. I figure if you label yourself a soul food restaurant, you have to get a stable like Mac & Cheese done right. NOT!

The place has potential. I hope they shake off the newbie jitters and get the basics right. The Mac& Cheese and fried chicken has to be "tight" or I stay home. I will retry this place in 1-2 months. We need an attractive, none franchise, not fast-food place in this area Therefore, I am truly sorry that I can not HONESTLY give this place more than 2 stars.

My wife has eaten there once, and we did take out as a family another time. She had the pork chop the first time, and thought it was very bland. The second time she had the catfish and thought it was okay. On that same trip I had the short ribs, and  they were incredibly bland. My dad had the meatloaf, and said it was okay but (guess what?) bland. That word comes up a lot in this review.

However, my green beans were awesome, seasoned and cooked perfectly. They weren't too salty like a lot of places make them, but not in the least bland. - I just wish there were more of them. My dad said the cabbage was very, very good as well. I didn't like the yams, they tasted boiled or something; I've never had yams or sweet potatoes that watery.  My wife said the whipped potatoes were kind of bland too. Oh, and the gravy was also tasteless. I usually sop up gravy with bread, but there was no point this time. How do you mess up gravy?

So, I don't know what the deal with this place is. They clearly know how to make some items packed with flavor, but others are just tasteless. It's weird. Short ribs are hard to mess up - I'm no master chef but mine taste a lot better than that out of the pressure cooker.

One of the best soul food places in the DMV! Crab Bisque was amazing as was the turkey wings and corn bread. Tried the crab cakes and crab dip they just as awesome. Staff was very attentive and helpful. Definitely going back.

Went there for the first time on a Wednesday evening after work and it wasn't too busy. As soon as we sat down, cornbread was brought over, which was good and moist. Our waiter, Jeffery, quickly greeted us and gave us the best service all evening; he gave us great suggestions on what to order. I was on the fence about whether to order the bisque, so he gave me a sampling, which was delicious but a little too creamy/rich for me to order it. Instead, I ordered the catfish appetizer, which was fried perfectly and seasoned well. For the entrees, we ordered the pork bbq ribs and grilled pork chops with gravy on the side. Also had the mac n cheese, greens, and rice as sides. Everything was fantastic and seasoned well, although the pork chops with gravy were my favorite. Had peach cobbler for dessert, which was good but not great; the crust was not crispy enough for my liking. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the food, service, and ambiance and can't wait to go back.

The food was delicious. It only gets 3 stars because customer service was not on point and food was not hot.

I had the rotisserie chicken (a bit dry), mac & cheese, cabbage, mash potatoes/gravy and candied yams.   I did not finish my chicken, but the sides...very tasty. I also ordered the peach cobbler...yum! Oh yeah, I had the crab dip as well...simply delish!  Our total bill for two was around $40...pretty good.  We will be back!

I had a chance to eat here to celebrate my fathers birthday. Beautiful atmosphere, for a date and for the family. The food was on a scale from 1-10 is a 8.5 The crab soup is wonderful and they have a great menu when it comes to soul food. Definitely a Best Kept Secret ... Can't wait to go back!

Again, that quarter point system would come in handy with DeSoul (better known in my house as De La Soul).

I would rate this restaurant as a 3.5.  There were some really great things.  Some things that were good, and somethings that were really lacking.

Great:  Someone noted on Yelp, not to miss the Crab bisque.  I listened, and could not have been more grateful.  I hate soup.  This wants me to give soup, no just bisque, a second go.  It was creamy and crabby, and lumpy (with crab of course).
The crab cake was fantastic.  Not a lot of filler and high in flavor.
    Cabbage was good, too.

Good: The calamari was fried well.  It was dipped in the bisque for better flavor.  The ribs were fall of the bone tender, but were dripping in their house bbq sauce (in a later category).
The asparagus (original, I appreciate that) was well cooked, not at all slimy or soggy.  Good flavor.  But there were only three spears.

Lacking: The cilantro-lime rice.  Of those three flavors, only the rice was present.
The bbq chicken was bone-dry and drenched in the bbq sauce that was tasteless (oh, I get it now!).  The mac and cheese was soooo cheesy.  It was hard to chew.

All in all, the food had a clear dividing line.  One should go in knowing this is a new establishment, and all the kinks aren't quite ironed out.

If in a month,if they are still there, I'd do it again - at least some of it.

Visited this place on a Sunday and had a take out meal.  They mixed my order up with another gentleman and we both ended up bringing them back.  Other then that the staff and friendly and the food is great.  I would take my friends here to eat.

I have been to the restaurant about 5 times now. That should tell you something. On each visit service was with a smile and very friendly. There could be a little improvement with the time frame that the meals come to the table, but lets be reminded this is a new restaurant and a new business. Time will yield perfection.
If the number of times visited can tell you anything is that the food is great and always excellent in my opinion and I have not had a bad experience at all. You should try it you will keep coming back too!

If you are a soul food person, then this is the place for you.  The ambiance is excellent, the staff is friendly, and the food is what will keep you coming back, I know I will be back. There is no alcohol served here but I look at this as a plus.

We treated a young couple that we are mentoring to this restaurant as we had already been here a couple of times before.  The food is great and the atmosphere is very nice.  It's a nice little hidden gem in Brandywine.   The couple has already stated that they will be returning without us/1  lol!
