If you're looking to freeze your tush off in some frighteningly terrible spring weather, then The Deck is definitely the place to do so. Located on the tip of one of those hidden Newport piers, this pearl of a restaurant will surely satisfy even the most frozen of taste buds in the winter, or the most melted of papillae in the summer. The star of any dish at The Deck (yes, you can dine inside an actual room...not just in a tent) is the daily-concocted risotto. Regardless of whether you're plate is adorned with beef and creamy, luscious cheese risotto or seared tuna and a smooth, umami spring green seaweed risotto, you're sure to fall in love with the 19-minute rice dish (Is it 19? Or 12? I don't make it...I can't remember.)
A small word to the wise, ask the chef to go easy on the salt - if you don't, you might just end up with something that tastes a bit like creamed, texturized salt, which is in no way appetizing. I promise.
Thanks to Yelp I found this place during a day trip to Newport.
It was located just down the side street from another of my go-to spots, Obrien's, which was perfect.
I decided to try the lobster roll (Newport Style) after reading the other reviews and I was not disappointed.
$17 for a lobster roll is pretty average.. there were big chunks of claw meat, it was very light on the sauce and served on a buttered toasted hot dog bun. Obviously I only wish it had been bigger but I did love the fact that the sauce was simple and there were not any chopped up pieces of celery or anything like that (blechh!)
I would definitely recommend this place and would love to return and try some other things on the menu.
They have really stepped up the food game at The Deck. Â The CT style Lobster roll and fries are amazing! However its truly very sad that these guys have prob one of the best fries in town and they serve it with no-name brand packets of ketchup! Â No Heinz, no bueno! Â But its off the beat and path, super casual and right on the water, so we will def be back. Â Summer weekend nights its a big bar scene.
Review Source:Tip: Inside is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the outside "deck"
Nothing to write home about, but it's right on the water away (a little) from downtown and the atmosphere out on the deck is good / what you want for a summer-time outdoor venue. Â
Food is okay outside (I tried a vegan quinoa burger in a vegan wrap it wasn't horrible) Â if you order the right thing -- but go inside for a nice meal.
I'm anxious to go back and eat inside again (we had already eaten dinner elsewhere and only tried the Crab Cake appetizer at the bar just bc is looked so good -- but we were watching the chef prepare all sorts of appetizing dishes from that view).
All in all an okay place and you can even eat vegetarian / vegan out on the deck -- unusual for this sort of venue -- but go there for the fun / outdoor / summer experience -- or eat inside.
The Deck is located right on the water on Waite's Wharf. Â It has a great view of the ocean. Â I've never eaten here before, so I can't comment on the food. I've had some good times here, but it's nothing too special. Â The bar is huge and attracts a lot of the younger crowd on weekends. Â It can get like a zoo on Friday/Saturday nights with all the people. Â Drinks are pricey, which is expected - but mixed drinks seem very weak. Â 5 dollars for domestic beer? Â Come on... Â Bar service can be slow during busy hours.
Review Source:I can't comment on this place on anything else besides the weekend night scene.
Being right on the water and right next to another bar which you are able to walk back and forth from, this is the to go place for locals, college students and any other young vacationer. There are people everywhere and it gets pretty crowded. They play music but it's so loud you can't really hear it. Also, it takes a really long time to get a drink. I gave up after 5 minutes of waiting.
It is a go to place if you want to meet people and have fun but be prepared to wait for drinks or better yet, find someone to buy one for you :)
Like the 2 star rating says " Meh. I've experienced better" Â Had to send back an entree for being over cooked, "stuffee" was rubber. It was just before the "season" opened so we ate in side while our view of the water was obscured by a tent with a bunch of loud sports fans. The prices didn't match with what the location offered as to a view. Would love to go back when the tent is down so i could get the full on DECK experience. Â We payed 10 bucks to park BTW.
Review Source:Love this place! The food always exceeds expectations in quality/portion size and the staff is fabulous. I have only eaten outside to watch sporting events and always have a really good time. I had the tomato soup and it was heavenly; hub had the lobster special and it was amazing. They also have interesting beers on tap.
Review Source:Probably closer to 3 1/2 but our server will give this review a nod to a 4.
It was a hot Tuesday and we really just wanted a respite from walking. Â Had a couple of drafts (Goose Island on tap, well done) then some friend clams (slightly cold) steamed muscles (maybe the best I have ever had anywhere) and buffalo wings (which were almost 4 alarm and a little too hot on a hot day).
Our server (whose name I failed to get, but was a Cali girl) was awesome, and made the experience great. Â Will def return!
Despite what another reviewer said about the clientele at this establishment, I am most definitely NOT a dbag and I love to go to the Deck's bar and restaurant on Waite's Wharf. Â It is a great place to go on a Friday and Saturday night to meet young singles. Â
It is my favorite place, by far, to visit during my nights in Newport and the service, food, drinks, and crowd are top-notch. Â Yes, they are quite pricy, and I wouldn't go here more than 2-3 times a summer (I'd be broke if I did) but the experience is worth every penny.
There is nothing more satisfying to me than having a fine dining experience at a dockside bar where you can watch the sunset surrounded by beautiful boats and colonial houses. Â
On my last visit I ordered shrimp primavera. Â It was the best I've ever had it. Â They used linguine prepared al dente made with a butter-and-garlic sauce. Â Mixed in were a huge variety of delicious vegetables, including broccoli, green pepper, carrots, mushrooms, peas, tomatoes, and spinach. Â Most importantly, the shrimp were not tough and overcooked as so many restaurants do. Â Good shrimp should be soft and tender, not tough and rubbery. Â The portion sizes are generous.
I also had a glass of chardonnay, courtesy of the very nice bartender who has been working there for many summers. Â Unfortunately I don't remember the vineyard that produced it. Â I don't remember her name, but she always works at the smaller bar by the fence along the side of the deck and she has black rimmed glasses and light brown hair. Â She's so nice to me whenever I go and she says she never forgets me. Â The employees are incredibly down-to-earth and accomodating, and don't act like you have to be a member of the British royal family to get their attention or courtesy.
It is fine dining at its absolute best. Â Upscale, friendly, and non-pretentious. Â You know you're in a classy place, but yet it is not unwelcoming and obsessed with protocol. Â (Strictly enforced protocol never makes for a pleasant experience).
Went here last night for a business meeting of local Inns/B&Bs. Â Hadn't really been inside the dining rooom since last year, but was pleasantly surprised that not much had changed, except for the Owner & Manager. Â Brian was there representing JC Import Co, with wines from Argetina and Chile and I happily sampled them and learned a bit of his new venture. Â After a few speeches from local businesses, The Chef, Matthew Holmes, treated all of us to a Ceasar salad, then grilled Swordfish with asparagus & risotto, then another large serving of NY trip steak with bourdelaise sauce and a heafy portion of smashed red bliss potatoes. Â Just right portions. Â Atmosphere is casual, but elegant with brick walls, Plasma screen TV in the corner and the best part I remember is sitting down at the counter viewing my meal being prepared by the Chefs. Â What a treat! Â Tables are small and intimate, with banquettes and linen tablecloths and napkins, simple black.white decor. Â At the Deck is open only Thursday - Sunday right now until the demand picks up, but definitely try this little gem of Newport !
Review Source:We found this place by accident on a Saturday afternoon - walked towards another place we could see from the road, then saw a sign to the right that said "Most interesting deck bar right here" or something like that, and we liked the idea. Â Not busy at all, we were 4 patrons to the other 3. Bartender made us heavy-pour "girlie" drinks involving rums, juices, etc. and they were delicious. Bar stools are in the shade but the ladies wanted some sun so we sat on the chaise lounges overlooking the water - so relaxing! Â Watched the boats come and go, then a young man came and set up a hot dog cart that offered chilled shrimp cocktail or oysters on the half shell. After a few quiet, relaxing hours we left and walked past all the other crazy-busy-crowded waterfront places. So glad we chose The Deck.
Review Source:I have been here many many times and usually sit outside or just hang out at one of the two outside bars. Â It's a perfect summer hang out, it's right on the water and always busy. Â It can get overrun with tourists but everyone is pretty cool, laid back and just enjoying the summer.
For the first time I finally ate inside the restaurant which is completely opposite from the outside. Â It's fine dining at it's finest without being pretentious or intimidating. Â It's open environment yet relatively small space is perfect. Â The chefs prepare everything in an open kitchen and because it's not huge or over the top it makes the experience that much better.
Everything from the service, the drinks, the apps, salad, dinner and desert, yep we did it up, was outstanding. Â Not one plate went unfinished and I'm sure if we had any room in our stomachs we would have asked for seconds. Â This was a meal to remember, topped off by a great atmosphere. Â This is what all restaurants should hope to be.
This is not the place to go if you want a quick/cheap meal or drink. We went to celebrate my mother's birthday and had a great time. We sat inside so I didn't see much of the outside bar, but from what I did see (our window table had a nice view of the outside smoking area) it looked like d-bag central. Anyway, the wait staff was great (a little slow, but we weren't in a hurry), the food was amazing (and at nearly $30 for an entree it should be!) and the atmosphere very nice (a little crowded, but we were in a corner, so it wasn't too noticeable). I would never go on my own, but for what we needed, it was perfect.
Review Source:Lively outdoor bar near the docks in Newport. Don't think I've ever seen so many Lily Pulitzer-clad women, twinsets and strands of pearls in one place! West Deck boasts somewhat of a more mature crowd than some of the bars in this area. Drinks? Well they don't come easy... Â expect to take 30 minutes to close out your tab. Not cheap, either... but is anything 'affordable' in posh Newport?
Review Source:Start off at the West Deck for some early beer drinking. Chat with some friends that you know, some that look familiar or meet new friends. It's a well-heeled crowd of booze bags and it's always a great time. The bartenders are fun and keep the mood lively. Head next to The Dockside to do some dancing before 11PM to avoid the crowds.
Review Source:One of the replacements for the "Saturday night, we go to Christie's!" crowd. Â Expensive covers, drinks. Â No live entertainment or even music. Â It's just a bar on a dock, which would be cool if people didn't make it out to be anything more than that, which they always do.
The staff has usually been pretty good.
You're better off going up the street to O'briens.
After living in Newport I will tell you straight up, if you are looking for the total culinary experience you will not forget, you must make reservations at the West Deck.
Sit at a cozy table or at the counter and watch master chefs create wonderful and fancy lamb dishes. The food is delicious, hot, fantastic.
It is a culinary experience. Â Never mind the outdoor bar where it is loud and full of party people-it is completely the opposite scene inside. Completely the opposite scene inside. Dress up and get ready to have a sophisticated, delicious, serious meal. From every part of this restaurant, you will see the room light up from the flames of what's on the gas burners.
There are only 4 restaurants in Newport that are my favorites in order when it comes to excellent dinner food quality:
-West Deck
-Golds (technically Middletown)
-Candy Store and Clarke Cooke House
-Salvation Cafe
