Old-as-in-historic and quaint and pure.
Excellent service from Lizzie (and others, I'm sure).
Folklore and ghost stories and history, too.
What a place to sip a bottle of brew!
Ask about the ghosts and the pictures on the wall,
and look up at dollars on the ceiling, stapled so they won't fall.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em and slide a puck
It's a great place to go before you're gonna ... Â ;)

Seriously, the Devil's Backbone Tavern is a great dive full of history and truly friendly locals. Make time for this one if you are in Fischer, Wimberley, or San Marcos. And, it's one of the only places in the area open on Sunday evenings.
Bottle beer only. No drafts, no wine, no liquor. Quite old TVs, so while you can check the score, it's not a good place to watch the game. The shuffleboard is old and quirky, but that just adds to the fun. Electronic darts are quite unused. The Juke Box is pretty good.
-1 for: indoor smoking, no WiFi
+1 for: a fabulous fireplace, character, a large selection of bottled beer, a place where the conversation is more important than the "sound".
This place is legendary. Â I have heard stories about this place for years but had no idea it still exists. Â In fact, I still wouldn't know if I had not gotten lost out in the Hill Country. Â The second I saw it I knew I had to go in and have a beer. This place has been around since the 1930's and it shows. Â The building pre-dates air conditioning so come in the evening or after the weather starts to cool. Â They don't take credit cards so bring cash.
