This is one of my two favorite bars in Ames. They have a really good beer selection, with 56 on tap and usually around another 30 to 40 in bottles. The atmosphere is fun and most of the bartenders are really friendly. They usually have music three or four times a week and even bring in some really good touring groups. On Tuesdays they'll have different events, like comedy night, slam poetry, and open jams. Wednesdays you can get Old Main beers for $1. They don't have a minimum for credit cards either which is a big plus.
Review Source:I heard about the many taps that this bar had so I thought I would check it out. Â Upon walking up to the bar the first thing I saw were plastic cups on several of the tap handles. Â My first choice was a well known IPA from a fairly large craft brewer and a beer I have had several times. Â This beer was not the beer I knew and it smelled and tasted a little odd. Â As much as I tried to be nice and gulp it down I couldn't. Â I decided to get a different IPA from another well known brewery. Â This beer should have erupted with hop flavor....nothing. Â It smelled of butterscotch and funk. Â The bartender replied with "This is how it always tastes". Â Really?? I know this wasn't caused from the brewery and was due to the poor cleaning and servicing of the tap lines. Â I never was refunded for any of the beers I turned away and ended up taking the safe route and bought an IPA from a bottle. Â If you're going to be a "Taphouse" with 50+ taps make sure your tap lines are properly cleaned on a regular basis. Â Deserving of 1 Star, but I gave it 2 because of the selection (even from the many that were sold out).
Review Source:Located above The Corner Pocket on Main St, DG's Tap House has become a great place to catch a game or enjoy local live music. Â DG's offers 56 beers on tap and 100+ bottled from mostly midwest craft breweries, in addition to a full bar.
Compared to the other Main St. bars in Ames, DG's has a younger crowd, and seems to be a good alternative hangout for those not wanting to deal with Campustown bars on Welch Ave. Â $1 Olde Main pints on Wednesday nights draw large crowds, and live music on Friday and Saturday offer entertainment for an average $5 cover.
There are two pool tables, several flat screen televisions, an internet connected jukebox, foseball, darts, Â big buck hunter, and lots of tables to sit with friends.
Staff is nice, bartenders are always willing to strike up a conversation.
Only downside to DG's is that they don't serve food (but there is usually food carts outside on select days) and they're not open on Sunday or Monday.
Whenever I'm back in Ames, my friends and I frequent DG's if we're looking for a laid back night away from crazy Campustown.
