Driving back to Greensboro from DC, I stopped at Down Home Buffet in South Hill, VA. Â It was a Sunday night, and there were alot of cars, so I thought to myself, "this restaurant must be good." Â I'm from the south and sometimes miss good 'ol country cooking, so I decided to give it a try.
When I got inside the restaurant, I was expecting an old southern grandmother to greet me. Â Instead, a nice, young Chinese (or Chinese American) girl served as hostess. Â What I soon realized is that the restaurant wasn't the "country cooking" buffet I was expecting but, instead, what I've seen called an "International Buffet."
The restaurant is set up with several buffets--each with a different theme: Chinese, Southern American, Salad Station, Dessert Station, etc. Â You get the picture. Â While some items on the buffet were very tasty (the Chinese style whole friend shrimp were delicious), there was little else that impressed me. Â Most everything else was clearly canned, processed, or previously frozen.
Down Home Buffet is housed in a converted Golden Corral (or similar steakhouse), and the decor is not updated. Â Therefore, needless to say, Â you don't dine there for the experience. Â The buffet price was reasonable--approximately $7 for the dinner buffet.
