This is definitely the closest thing to a honky tonk run of the mill bars that you will find in downtown Jackson... it may be the only one you will be able to find.
They've got just about everything. Karaoke on select nights, bands, beer, and of course darts and a cigarette machine. Down side is they don't really have any beers on tap, all from bottle. Don't expect too much, This place is simple and keeps it simple. Beer selection is your basic beer: Natty Light, Budweiser products, and possible Blue Moon.
It's a nice place to come out and hang with your friends and grab a drink. Keep your eyes open though. You can find some great opportunities for people watching here as well.
"If you're lucky enough to be at the Tavern, you're lucky enough."
Mitch Carter
This quote from off of some of the t-shirts for "the Tavern" pretty much says it all.
Jackson, Tennessee isn't much more than just a rest stop on the drive between Memphis and Nashville but to those of us who happen to live here, we have to make due. And unfortunately there isn't a whole lot to make due with. We have a couple of bar and grille type places near the interstate, a few clubs that I try to stay away from and then a few dive bars.
But if you look hard enough, you find this little gem of a watering hole hidden in downtown Jackson. The only way you would even really know that this place is open for business is that you won't be able to find a parking place for two blocks. The space feels fairly small due to the building being narrow but it more than makes up for that with its character.
The two ladies that own this place started as bartenders here and still work behind the bar every weekend. With live music playing almost every night of the week (of very different styles too, I might add), one of the best selections of beer you can find in this town (if not the best) and friendly entertaining staff sets this place head and shoulders above other bars in the area.
During the summer months, music is held outside in the patio area which opens up the bar and helps make the Tavern not feel as crowded but even during winter months is never so crowded to be uncomfortable. They even often an upstairs lounge and bar which is open during special events or available for private parties.
Friday and Saturday nights, there is a cover charge to help pay for the bands but the Tavern offers a free beer with entry, so it isn't exactly like you don't get anything out of it.
All in all, this is one of the only spots of nightlife I have found in this town that is enjoyable. If you want chlamydia, by all means go hit up one of the clubs in town, but if you just want to have a good time, listen to some live music and have a few tasty drinks, then I feel that you should go to the Downtown Tavern.
