Normally this place is a nice place to "kick back" but tonight it was very un-accommodating... The steak had to be sent back... (Which I normally never do). And the waitress was very short and you had to ask for refills on drinks... Pretty disappointed at tonight's performance... On a positive note chris the bartender has made a very positive experience the last few times my wife and I came...
Review Source:We met friends here one night for dinner. Â Both couples had been here numerous times and one raved about the food. Â Sometimes you wonder what your friends were thinking.
The food was mediocre at best. Â I had the BBQ brisket which was dried out and served with a sauce that I am pretty sure came out of a bottle. Â When you post that you do your own smoking, it better be good. Â My wife had a Caesar salad for an entree and had to send it back. Â Of the four friends, one liked their dinner and the others were like, OK.
No reason to go there again.
The first time we went here we were blown away how good it was! We were told the fried chicken was not to be missed and it was amazing. We have been back many times and Love so much of this menu. The fried Artichokes are terrific, The wings are great. The fish tacos. However there are some issues. The place has a fruit fly issue. Our second trip we noticed it but thought nothing of it. The 4th time I was grossed out. I mentioned it each time and was told it just happened. Service is also an issue sometimes. We have sat waiting forever just to get a menu and then had a rude waiter rush us for our order . I stopped going till last week when some friends wanted to go there. The food was a great as ever but all the issues I have with the place still were there. I love a fun dive to eat at a joint of a place but I'm so conflicted because I so enjoy alot of the food but the chipped dishes, the flies and the guy with windex spraying and wiping tables grosses me out. We were going to go there tonight and changed our minds. GET IT TOGETHER DREWB'YS without these issues your 4 stars and we want to love you.
Review Source:Was looking forward to being back after a number of times coming in between 2009-2011.
But its not the same...My old favorite was gone: fried chicken/mashed postaoes/spinach which I loved soo much and ordered every time I came and was consistent every time. The menu was changed, and the food was ok at best. I wasnt wowed over by the flavors of anything: either underseasoned or a bit on the black side.
Jen F said it right in the 10/28/12 review. And someone else also commented by wondering what they are now trying to be...
I miss the old menu, and probably the old chef as well since the food was ok but not like I remembered....Oh well...Back to the drawing board to find another place that is consistent/doesnt break the bank/has tasty food....
We've been to Drewby's a few times. This *could* be a terrific place, but for a few things.
PROS: The quality of the food ranges from good to excellent. The portion size is very good. The service overall is good, but spotty at times when they get busy. If you're on a budget, there's plenty to eat under $10. The fancy stuff runs to $20 (except a seafood special that's $35).
CONS: So, what would I change? The draft beer selection is slim (4 or 5), and the wine selection is basic (this is Manville, after all). I'd gut and rebuild the nasty bathrooms. I'd replace the terrible lighting. I'd significantly freshen the interior. I'd find a way to get rid of the dozens of tiny flying bugs that are all over the wall beneath the giant, nostalgic sign reading M A N V I L L E (I would have photographed them but as I mentioned, the lighting is terrible), one of which landed on my empty plate. I'd replace the faux-wood salad bowls that remind me of the early '60s. Parking sucks but we always manage to find a spot within a minute's walk, and there's not much they can do about that. The kitchen is really part of the dining area, which makes it...interesting. Since its lighting is almost as bad as the dining area's, I don't know how they can work. I think our server was taken aback that I wanted change* when I paid the check.
The bar side is a more enjoyable experience than the dining side, and the pizza is excellent. I'm really on the fence with Drewby's...one bad experience and I don't think I'd go back; until then, I tolerate the shortcomings and hope the owner someday takes my advice to heart.
*18% had already been included on the check (this was a special case; ordinarily 18% isn't included unless you have a large party in most restaurants). Had I had free choice, I would have left 15% as the service was ok.
Edit:
Having been going to Drewby's regularly since October, I have developed a better understanding and notion of what this establishment is. Unfortunately, the lack of customer service and cleanliness really overpower the excellent food. Unfortunately, my girlfriend and I had an experience with an employee there that left a poor taste, and we haven't been back since. Without too many details, the employee was wildly rude to my girlfriend and I for no apparent reason. I suspect it was because we were waiting for a table and I had laughed at something my girlfriend said. The employee must have thought we laughed at her because that's when she became a bit hostile. After her shift, she sat down with her friends and actually threw a piece of celery at us. Also, there is a definite issue with fruit flies in the dining area that hasn't been addressed for some time. This place can be so good. Most of the people that work there are attentive and friendly. But unfortunately, this experience and the fruit fly issue ruined it for me. I was such a big fan; however, I will no longer be recommending this place to people.
Drewby's has been my ALL time favorite for years ! The quality of the food is awesome, atmosphere is warm and cozy, staff is great...and the Chef Rocks. I would def. recommend Drewby's a great place for dinner an lunch. Â If you've never to been Drewby's....GOOOOOO ! It's totally worth it ! :) You'll keep coming back for years ! :)
Review Source:Last night was my first visit to Drewbys. Â If you look up "hole in the wall" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Drewbys. Â That being said the food is impressive. Â The ambiance is difficult to describe. Â Â You feel like you are in a Knights of Columbus hall that shares common space with a pizza parlor. Â This is a really cool neighborhood bar that should be a dining destination. Â I enjoyed the clam chowder and the stuffed mushrooms at the bar. Â The stuffed mushrooms were outstanding. Â They were stuffed with crabmeat and covered in a very nice cheese sauce. Â They were served in an iron skillet with terrific French bread. Â It was obvious that there was a lot of care in the preparation and presentation of this dish. Â
This place delivers excellent food that is well above the usual pub fare.
DO NOT PASS UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRY THIS PLACE!!!!!
This review is LOOOONG overdue.
I lived around the corner from this place for a couple of years and I couldn't have been luckier for it. Drewby's turned out to be one of my all-time favorite places to go. You simply cannot get better quality food for the price. Don't be fooled by it's outside appearance. Though it may look like a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, and even though it IS a local place where you'll find the regulars kicking back a few beers after work each evening, the food this kitchen pumps out is top notch no matter what. The ambiance and decor are warm, cozy and casual.
I want to correct some of the previous posts mentioning that there is no parking lot. The parking lot is behind Drewby's, off of Main St. on South. It's usually open if you don't go during dinner. Otherwise you can usually find parking on South.
This place has a consistently impressive specials menu, SUPER creative dishes and flavor combinations, and a great staff, including the owner, whose name I never caught, but who has helped me make more than one holiday meal at my own home better with his recipe suggestions.
Things I have had that blew my mind here:
Dan Jackiel's Boneless BBQ Ribs
Rosemary Parmesan Fries
PIEROGI Pizza (Mozzarella, mashed potatoes, grilled onions, sour cream...YES!)
An old special: SUSHI Pizza (I know it sounds weird, but it was SERIOUSLY amazing)
Also, Wednesdays all summer (from what I remember anyway) they have killer $10 seafood specials.
I Love You (and miss you *sniff*) Drewby's!
I had been wanting to come to Drewby's for a long time and my wife and I finally got here the other day. Â Some basics - there is no parking lot - you have to try and find a spot on the street. Â When you enter, there is a long, narrow bar on your left and the dining room is to your right. Â A small wall separates the two. Â There were a few TV's with sports on while we were there (sports are always good by me). Â Service was decent throughout the meal - they were pretty busy. Â
The menu is pretty extensive. Â I did notice that they had a tapas menu online, but we didn't see it while we were there. Â My wife and I started out with an order of the steak nachos. Â They were huge and they gave you big sides of sour cream and salsa (I hate when places make you pay extra - Drewby's doesn't). Â The nachos were pretty good - there wasn't a lot of steak and the steak wasn't anything spectacular. Â But, they were cheesy and messy in a good way. Â At $8, definitely a bargain.
My wife and I both ordered a steak sandwich that came with a chipotle sauce, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Â The bread the sandwich was served on was very good, but there was a lot of it and it overwhelmed the sandwich a bit. Â The steak on the sandwich was of better quality than the nachos and was cooked medium. Â The chipotle sauce had a real nice kick to it. Â My wife had a side salad (came with the sandwich) and I opted to pay an extra buck for their "rosemary" fries. Â The fries were nothing special but they weren't bad, either. Â
Overall, we both enjoyed our meals. Â It is also worth nothing that they have $1.50 Bud Light pints which is an amazing price. Â The prices were also incredibly cheap. Â Drinks and food came to about $30 which is a bargain. Â The value here is extraordinary. Â I really wasn't blown away by the food, but it was a good meal. Â I will definitely return and will give some other menu items a shot.
I went to Drewbys last night with and enticement of a groupon. Â Before I went I had taken a look at the menu and was really excited since there was quite the selection (Tappas as well as other things). Â i have to say I did have a good time and the wait staff was very friendly but I think Drewby's is spreading itself too thin as far as both the decor and menu is concerned (Is Drewby's a dive bar a fancy eattery?) Â We had ordered the cheese plate, poutine, ceasar salad, and Old world Pizza. Â I would go there if you want a dive bar with decent pizza, stay away from the fancier food.
Review Source:This a local neighborhood watering hole that punches well above its weight in the quality of its menu. Although you can get pizza, burgers and sandwiches, but its nightly specials would compete with any fine dining establishment. Its very reasonably priced as well. My wife and I have been coming here since it opened, its a good place to get great food, without having to get dressed up. My only complaint is that lately the live entertainment on the weekends starts too early. While this adds to the late night bar experience, its too loud if your there just for dinner. Many times you have to yell to have a conversation.
Review Source:This is definitely a case of the decor not matching the food. It's sort of a cross between a low-rent family restaurant and a divey bar, but the food is not to be missed. We started with the nachos which had the perfect amount of cheese. I followed it up with the stuffed rigatoni with smoked bacon, mushrooms in a ricotta truffle cream sauce--to die for. I will definitely be going back to this place.
Review Source:Amazing! Â I would go here everyday if I could. Â The specials are always great and their chop chop salad is awesome. Â
I always thought this was just another Manville dive bar but once inside it's actually very nice. Â It's like a pizza place, fine restuarant and dive bar rolled into one. Â I don't know if I'd go here for a romatic night out, but it's perfect for every other day of the year. Â
My fiance and I bring all of our friends here and they're always surprised that there's a place like this in Manville. Â
If you've never been there GO.
Anytime I am looking for a good casual meal in a fun bar atmosphere but don't feel like going to one of the local chains like Fridays, Applebees, etc, I always end up at Drewby's. Good food reasonable prices, fun bar/restaurant atmosphere. Â Great burgers and sandwiches, interesting dinner specials, and a few pretty good italian dishes. Â Sometimes local musicians appear on weekends and I am always willing to support a restaurant that sees the value in live music.
Review Source:Nice cold beers.. The burger I got the first time was cooked perfectly, fries were average. The second time I tried to step it up to the chef specials... Yuk! Never again.. Third time back to the burger, but this time it was over cooked and the french fry's were very oily.. The oil was probably at the wrong temperature... I would go back just for beer... Its a local dive bar, I thought it was cool with the open kitchen, but its a dive bar.
Review Source:I love this place, the artichoke app is amazing. Â All the food that I have had there has been amazing and anyone I take there love it.
The only bad visit I had was last time I went with my mom and sister. Â I took them there for a quick bite for her birthday and the waitress was really rude. Â She ignored our table, ignored our drink orders and took forever to give us anything. Â We had to ask for more napkins, utensils and seasonings for our pizza and never got them. Â After waiting thirty minutes for those things, we went up and got it oursleves.
Also when we asked for our leftovers to be packed, she threw the boxes at us and ignored us when we said thank you (for anything she did). Â But it turned it a good thing that she did not wrap our leftovers, because we noticed that when she took food back to get wrapped, she touched their food with her bare hands (picked up the bun off the burger!!).
It seemed like she was discriminating against us, because she would stop and talk to her other tables. Â They also got everything they needed in a timely manner. Â Tables that came an hour after us left before us and it wasn't because we were eating slow. Â We basically cleaned up our own table and waited on oursleves, while dealing with her horrible behavior.
If it weren't for her, Drewbys would be one of my favorites. Â Hopefully, she leaves soon and I can once again enjoy the amazing food.
Drewby's is a local watering hole with surprisingly good food. We go here every few months and the food is always interesting, fresh and good. Every time we go we mention that we should come here more often. It is a bit slow but the staff is always nice and accommodating and it also can be noisy Drink and food prices are reasonable. Well worth the trip.
Review Source:Went to this place on a Monday afternoon for lunch when it was decidedly uncrowded. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer and they were among the best nachos I've ever had. Two of us got the chicken/freshmozz/roasted pepper sandwich with fries. Very tasty. The other 2 in my party got personal pizzas, one sausage and the other a pirogi pie. Had never heard of the latter, but the little taste I had was really good.
Service was great.
I would have given it 5 stars maybe, but the cleanliness of the old bathrooms left much to be desired. They need to replace the flooring as well in the dining area. I think they keep it dark so you don't notice the fact that the place needs some sprucing up.
But I would go back, as the food was very tasty and a great value for the money.
I go to Drewby's about once or twice a month. Â It is legitimately one of my favorite restaurants in the area and whenever me and my fiancee are stumped on where to go for dinner we usually end up here. Â I guess you could say its our go to restaurant. Â Although many people believe this is your run of the mill dive bar in Manville with sub par food that could not be farther from the truth. Â The food is delicious and very creative. Â The chef always finds ways of putting things together that you never would have thought of and makes it awesome. Â Although the regular menu is great I usually go for something off of the specials menu. Â The specials menu always has a lot of items on it and they always look amazing. Â One of my favorite appetizers is the crispy artichoke with with shaved provolone, olives, and balsamic. Â Also the wings are a solid chose which come in a ton of different sauces, but you have to ask for the list of sauces because the wings aren't on the menu. Â For an entree all of the sandwiched are great which come with a half sour pickle and your chose of salad or french fries. Â Also any of his seafood entrees either on the specials or regular menus are great. Â For dessert they have the menu written on a chalk board. Â All are amazing. Â Drewby's is a must try, you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:A great neighborhood bar, with really good food. Â Although I think the menu is a little lacking in selection, everything I've ever tried is good. Â There's about 3 waiters that work there all the time and are starting to become familiar to me. Â They're very helpful in making selections and the service is fast.
The have live music once in awhile too. Â This place is not spectacular, but it's good. Â It's very rare to find a restaurant in central Jersey that's not a chain, and for this Drewby's gets 4 stars.
A coupon from http://restaurant.com convinced my husband and I to give Drewby's a try. I had read there was a chef doing some interesting things there, but the outside isn't very enticing. I'll admit that the inside isn't any more attractive - think neighborhood bar/pizza joint. What I'd heard was right, though - in addition to the pizza and basic bar food on the menu there are some interesting choices indeed. Fish and chips with a lemon aioli that was clearly made in-house and not out of a jar. Grilled figs with goat cheese, pecans, and balsamic vinegar. Pan seared salmon with a citrus vegetable orzo. All the desserts sound great, and appear to be made in-house.
There are downsides - the atmosphere is as I described, the parking situation isn't fabulous, the inside is noisy and the service is slow (but friendly and well-meaning). None of these have been bad enough on two visits to keep us from going back again. There's many more things I need to try.
I had meant to try Drewby's for a while now and finally stopped in today after reading the two recent reviews. Â The place is a somewhat old fashioned bar, with a couple of screens, four beers on tap, and a fairly extensive menu. Service was just OK since there was only one gal taking care of thirty or so diners.
The place was noticably noisy, partly due to the open kitchen in the front. Â The bar itself was quiet on a Saturday afternoon, but there was one large group dining when we came in and a second large group as we were finishing.
The crispy artichoke was nice as an appetizer, the chorizo and white bean soup was just OK. Â The steak was very good as another reviewer mentioned. Â The veal cutlet was good but very far from fantastic. Portions are generous.
I would stop by again for convenience only. Â Not worth a trip.
Drewby's Grill Pub is an unassuming neighborhood watering hole in Manville conveniently located to the Manville Reading Theater and Wal*Mart. Â Drewby's features decent, very affordable food prepared by a high-energy cooking staff in a semi-open kitchen at the front of the restaurant and served by a very attentive serving staff. Â
Drewby's offers a better than average range of draft and bottled beers. Â Several other reviewers have pointed out Drewby's extensive menu - which runs the gamut from traditional bar foods like boneless ribs, burgers, and chicken fingers to more eclectic creations like fish and chips with rosemary fries. Â I had the flat iron steak with parma crust and garlic shrimp, which was acceptable but not phenomenal; my girlfriend had the veal cutlet served over lettuce and asiago cheese, which was much better. Â Portions are generous and prices are very reasonable.
The highlight of the evening was the live music - a fantastic acoustic guitarist who played an eclectic mix of classic rock and modern rock.
I highly recommend this for a quick pre-movie dinner or hanging out with friends in a casual bar environment. Â Drewby's does not have its own parking lot; street parking can be a challenge.
A hidden gem! Â A popular local haunt, Drewby's is routinely packed with a diverse crowd enjoying great food and good beer and bar selection.
The menu is a mix of southern favorites, Italian greats, and new cuisine specialties.
The standing menu features such amazing options as the Shrimp Po'Boy for just $8. Â Make sure you upgrade to the Rosemary fries. Â The pizza selections are very reasonably priced as well and the taste was near perfect! Â Two favorites include the Buffalo Chicken and "The Jerk" which included jerk spiced chicken, shrimp, peppers, onions & sausage.
In addition to the menu, there are usually a few great options on the specials list. Â Recently I had the boneless beef rib appetizer - we we're scraping the plate for the last few drips of sauce.
It pays to call ahead as Drewby's can be packed. Â Highly recommended!
