I love the food here. The chicken is very moist and hella yummy. Â Oooh the Mac n. Cheese was so good. Â Elephant bar can make something that seems sooo simple an turn that mother out. The waiter Paul was the best too. If your going to this place see if Paul is there because yknow you'll get guaranteed great service.
Review Source:There is alot of healthy type food to choose from but I wasn't really looking for something healthy to eat. Â I was kinda thinking this place had more of a bar/grill type menu but it was more of an asian/grill/american fusion concept that isn't really my gig. Â If you like fancy salads and fish dishes than you'll probably like eating here.
Review Source:I don't know why I keep coming back here. The service is good but the food is below expectations. Philly cheese steak is very good and most of the basics are worth it. Stay away from their more creative menu options. They try to hard to come up with unique creations and mark up the price. There are better places to get steaks, seafood and Asian food. I would pass unless you don't have any other options and then stick to the basics.
Review Source:Another great lunch at the Elephant, this time with a blind 88 year old woman with sore gums and painful teeth. Â She had heard that the ribs were soft and tender so wanted to try them.
We did and, to our surprise, she was right. Â St. Louis style ribs are generally not as tender or flavorful, to me, as baby back ribs. Â But these were remarkably tender and cooked perfectly so the fat was gone and the meat did fall off the bone.
Lots of new things on the menu, adding to their already abundant variety set to satisfy even the fussiest diner.
Wife had the lettuce wrap and it was excellent, so much so that she had a mini-dessert of a won ton sundae which was also good.
I had the French dip which was perfect with fat-less meat and a soft bun. Â The au jus was oily and thick, so was not so great. Â See if they have any different dip for that sandwich.
The salads were wet, so much so that if you forked a bunch of salad to dip into the dressing the dressing would not stick. Â Nice portions, but terribly wet. Â They make their own ranch, thousand island and Italian dressings, so I opted for Italian and ranch. Â The Italian was not very good, too thick and gooey.
We had a great server, Sarah E. who was very patient, accommodating and had a light sense of humor. Â Parked the walker for us and was attentive throughout.
A good experience..
I go here pretty often and they are a very busy restaurant, but they never lose you in the herd. They take good care of you and use great ingredients in their food, the portions are nice too. The price is what you would expect for a place like this, think Chili's/Applebees prices. But don't go to Applebees because they're a terrible restaurant. lol. I'll definitely be back.
Review Source:I had such good memories of the Elephant Bar growing up, that I decided to take my family there. Â I was so disappointed with the staff and especially the food. We came in with our daughter and the host seated us in a corner, behind the server station, and gave us a dirty look leaving the kids menu for us. Â A server came up to us and we weren't ready yet so they had us sit there for 30 mins without even a drink. Â Finally someone came up to us and we ordered. Â
We found dirt on all our veggies, they didn't even take the time to wash their food and just served it! We tried to wave someone down, but they ignored us. Â I tried the BBQ combo plate (Shrimp, Chicken, and Ribs) and the food was over cooked and dry. Â The shrimp tasted fishy and like crap. Â But the worst part was when I found cooked plastic in my little chilli bowl! there was a server at the server station and I tried talking to her about it and she walked away saying she had to take someones order. Â My girlfriend ordered the teriyaki chicken with brown rice. Â The rice was cold and undercooked. Â
I'm not a picky person, I'll turn a blind eye to rude servers if the food is really good. Â But, that wasn't even the case here. Â This use to be my favorite place when I was a kid, but I Â feel really bad that I brought my family here. Â We will never go here again.
Went for dinner tonight so disappointed they took pad Thai off the menu so I ordered a crab and shrimp Louis salad the crab was so fishy and awful I didn't even eat it the waitress was quite matter of fact when I asked and told her it was fishy and bad and I love all fish and I've never complained she basically said that's what you ordered and gave us the bill my husband also said his sauce on his burger was bad and we waited about ten minutes after we got our food for silverware :( so upsetting wasn't even worth going tonight!
Review Source:This place has a fun happy hour. My drink was great, a mango margarita on ice. I stayed for dinner but it was not so good. Had the 5 spice chicken and shrimp over rice. They used too much ginger. It was over powering in taste and I just didn't enjoy it. The vegetables were soggy and I think one of the veggies was asparagus (which I ordinarily like) but it was tough and hard to chew kinda like shredded bamboo. I like the place and would come back and try something else to eat. The service was very good.
Review Source:Elephant Bar use to be very good however things have changed since the last time I've been. I order fried calamari which clearly is bought prebreaded and frozen. Reminded me of fish sticks. Then I ordered the 5 spice shrimp & chicken and when it came OH MY, my rice was crunchy and got stuck in my teeth and the vegetables were CLEARLY passed over cooked. So while my kid is eating their remaking my food. He's now done and my food arrives. The food is fine they apologize. I get a Togo box and the check and they didn't comp shit.. Elephant bar messed up. How many people saw my plate was horrible? The chef. The waiter. Then the manager. You mean my plate passed 3 inspections and no one could see it was past over cooked until I said something. Then you don't even comp a $4 drink. Wow!!! Great customer service. Go over and beyond to make the customer come back cuz you did nothing special but give me the food I ordered after was kind was done eating his burger and fries. Not to mention it was lunchtime and no one was there. Not going back there. AND I recommend a NO go there to friends in the future
Review Source:My friends and I had dinner at this restaurant a few nights ago. The service was mediocre, as was the food, but we hadn't seen each other in a very long time so our visit was enjoyable regardless. Our check came out to $59.95. My friends paid cash ($40) and I paid with my card. We put everything together with the bill and the waitress took it. When the bill came back the $40 dollars in cash was gone and my card was left with the receipts. The receipt said it totaled $59.95 but I assumed that was including the cash as it was gone. I signed for the bill and added a tip. A few days later while checking my credit account I noticed that I was charged for the full amount, not the $59.95 minus the $40 cash. I called the restaurant right away and spoke to the manager, Vince. He assured me he would look into it and call me back. He did, took him nearly 6 hours, but he did call me back. Vince offered me a $50 dollar gift card for my trouble, which is not what I want. I wanted the 40 dollars back. Apparently he cannot refund me this amount. I asked him why his server thought she was getting a 40 dollar tip in addition to the tip I left on the check? He could not answer this question. The answer, either his server is new and really thought her substandard service was deserving of two tips totaling nearly the bill itself, or she is a thief. Â He said he would speak to the server and ask if she will surrender the $40 dollars, but that is all he can do for me, besides a $50 dollar gift card. I do not want the gift card. I never want to set foot in that restaurant again. This is the second time I have received bad service here. Once was years ago. I am VERY displeased with the way the management has handled the situation. I myself am a manager and in the event of something like this I would have refunded the customer immediately, offered some sort of gift card or coupon and investigated the employee/employees in question. I would love a response from someone higher up this company's food chain. I want to know if this is really how your company is run or if these people are not representative of the Elephant Bar level of customer service. I will update this review, when and if my issue is resolved.
Update 2/25/13: After emailing Elephant Bar corporate about the incident, I received a call from the store manager. He took care of my problem immediately and I am very satisfied with his level of professionalism and service. I only wish his employees had reflected the same. I was given a complete refund and sent a comp card in the mail. I will be giving the Elephant Bar another try sometime soon and will update my review after my visit.
Went to Elephant Bar last night for Valentine's Day and had a mixed experience. At first, the waitress tried to seat us closest to the kitchen (where we find the plate banging distracting) and asked to be moved a ways away. The greeter seemed to have issues with finding a new table until we pointed out the 15 or so well within view.
Dinner went well until the child belonging to the couple sitting across from us began screaming. It went on and on and on. Neither the Elephant Bar staff nor the parents seemed to be willing to address the issue. Fortunately we were near the end of our meal, and left, with my wife taking issue with the Mother (who was appalled that we didnt' enjoy the kid's antics). The clueless dreadlocked Dad sat and did little to quell the misbehaving child, not able to figure out how to take him outside and address the issue.
We definetly need more restaurants were kids are NOT welcome if this is the level of skills some parents bring to the dining experience. (And yes, I know how to control kids, I teach high school and deal with more than 160 each day - they can be fun but you have to have the abilities to keep things in order.)
Low marks for EB staff not asking the parents to take screaming child outside.
We had a GREAT waiter tho.
I haven't been to an Elephant bar chain in a long time and decided to check it out.
I came during lunch, our waitress was very nice and we were seated in this cool booth that looked like we were on a ship.
We ordered the garlic bread...it was alright, could have been toasted a littler longer and the marinara dipping sauce that it came with tasted a bit bland, like something out of the can.
I ordered the chicken marsala lunch plate, a PERFECT amount for lunch, I ate the whole plate and felt satisfied. It tasted pretty good too for not being an Italian restaurant.
The parmesan crusted chicken with shrimp and linguine was pretty good but not the best.
I tried their cobb salad and I love how they presented it. I am a firm believer in eating with your eyes first. Because it had meat, it was substantial and you would not leave feeling hungry. The bleu cheese dressing was wonderful.
Decent food for a decent price.
Stopped in for lunch since the weekend crowds didn't seem too bad. Â Was seated and greeted quickly. Â Wife and I looked over the menus only to find that mine was missing a page. Â I was wondering why her menu had so many more items. Â
She got some chicken strip and mac and cheese meal, I got the Chinese five spice chicken and shrimp. Â She liked hers, but mine was horrible. Â
It was first served to me cold, on a cold plate. Â At first, I thought it was a salad plate pulled from the chiller. Â Everything on the plate tasted as though it was sitting under an A/C vent (which for some reason was running in December). Â
I called the waitress over who apologized and took the plate back. Â The manager Vince came over, apologized and asked if there was anything else he could get me. Â I should have said yes. Â When I got the warmer (not hot, just warmer) food I wasn't impressed. Â I was now eating alone since it took so long to prepare my food...again. Â After all that the food tasted...bad. Â It tasted like plain shrimp and chicken with some all bay seasons tossed over it. Â Not very good, not worth the money and just...plain, boring, bland. Â
And to top it all off, nothing was discounted or removed from the bill, not even the over priced soda I asked for to wash it all down. Â I was going to raise issue with the manager, but just wanted to leave by that time. Â
We will not return.
This is my parents favorite restaurant in Modesto. When I came home for the holidays, they took me there... twice! Both times we went it was a great dining experience... great service, great food, reasonably priced, nice portions, full bar... I can see why my folks enjoy it so much. Their Asian dishes are fantastic! Next time I'm in Modesto I'll be visiting this place again.
Review Source:Love love love this place! So glad it's right down the street from mi casa as well. I appreciate that they remain consistent with their "worldly" dishes and bring some flavors I'd never experienced before. Mostly Asian fusion, they offer up some very creative dishes along with some American classics such as burgers and sandwiches.
The staff are always very nice and attentive as well. To me this is always a win!
I know when I start my review, a lot of you are going to be saying "Why do you go out to eat."
My husband and I have been eating very healthy, organic whole foods! So when my husband wanted to take me out, I had resvervations because our bodys have been so healthy.
But I thought it would be so nice to kick back and let someone else cook.
We ordered the Salmon and brown rice and for starters the Citrus salad. We shared the two plates.
Immediately I started to get a headache! I finished my salad thinking I was just hungry. When the Salmon came it looked really good! But by the time I finished half of it, I wanted to just go home and go to bed!! I then realized all this food was LOADED with MSG!!!
I am actually very angry!! Yes, you may think it's my responsibility to ask the server, but I feel restaurants have a bigger responsibility to let the public know they are adding this dangerous and unnecessary product to our food!!
My review is not actually on the way the food looked or tasted, but rather the danger of it!!
I am sad that we can't go out on occasion and have a nice dinner without getting sick!!
So thank goodness I love to cook! And make awesome food!
Next time we go out, you bet I will ask, "Is there MSG in this food"!!!
2 star for the food minus 3 for the poor service. I've been here only 2 times & will not come back. Why? Because the times I've came there I had 2 different server. I was constantly being ignored. I only wanted refill on my drink & they couldn't give me that. Or should I say they didn't bother to check up on me. The only time they came back to me was to ask if I needed a box. Hello?! How about the 3 empty cups on the table?! Enough said, I will just end it here...
Review Source:Sooo disappointed. Â We go here every year for my son's birthday but not anymore. Â Our appetizers ($40 worth) arrived with our entrees. No compensation even offered. Â My son's order was wrong but server took too long to come over to ask if everything was ok. Â Birthday desserts were not free as we were told. Â Checking out took way too long. Â I paid $200 for this, there were 6 of us. Â I expect more. Â Won't be back.
Review Source:We go to Elephant Bar probably a couple time a month because it's close, and has a varied interesting sort of pan-asian fusion menu that can accomodate different tastes, as well vegetarians with something other than the dreaded GVP ( grilled vegetable plate),its clean and comfortable, Â and the prices are very reasonable for drinks as well as food.
The menu has calorie counts for each item, which is helpful to me (how many hours is that chocolate melted brownie thing gonna cost on the treadmill). Â If you eat in the bar for happy hour, which is every day after 9pm there are special half price menu items, as well as small plates in the 5-6 dollars range, which are adequate for me. Â Seniors get 20% discount card, which is nice.
I am pretty picky with a very low tolerance for poor value and bad customer service and I have to say, as many times as we've been there I can't remember having any complaints. Â The service always seems fast and friendly. Â The africa safari decor is idiosyncratic but not unpleasing. Â For a chain in a town with an incredible dearth of decent food, Elephant Bar is an appealling choice.
Oh yeah, and the garlic bread is so yummy for a serious calories comfort food treat!
I am particular about the way I want my food prepared, a bit picky I would say. Â But the staff at elephant bar never complain and always get my special orders correct. Â We dine here often and have our favorite servers. Â They go above and beyond to take of us.
I would recommend the chicken medallions, I prefer it without the sauce. Â I also like the sweet potato fries, the garden burger and a side salad. Â I really like the soft pretzel sticks that they have, my only complaint is the sauces aren't very good. Â We like to dip them in the tomato soup instead. Â
For dessert either the giant cookie or the cheesecake with strawberry sauce. The mud pie cookie crust is to die for, but it's too big for only two people. Â I wish they had a mini version.
All in all a good experiece: reasonably priced, great food & service.
Been here a couple of times with a friend, and we always get excellent service. Â Lunch on a Saturday is not too crowded and we usually get our choice of booths. Â Bar seating is also quite spacious. Â I like that on the last time I ate here, I ordered a stir-fry with no meat and they compensated by adding extra tofu. Â A nice touch! Â Conveniently near the mall so you can fuel up before your marathon shopping trip!
Review Source:Okay-- So I finally figured out the secret to not overdoing it at Elephant Bar. You've got to go with a group of people-- and only order a couple appetizers-- the reason being-- if you take a look at the calorie count of every single item on the menu at Elephant Bar-- you would probably have eaten enough calories for the week in one sitting if you ordered a full on meal.
So- We're in Modesto-- Why? You ask.. probably because how most people find themselves there.. they've got friends or family out there, bought a cheap house out there, or perhaps have never been before ( which was my case...).. or maybe they were just lucky enough to have been born and raised, from big beautiful Modesto!
Any how... they were only a few options for a semi-decent place to grab some grub and cocktails around this little town off the 99 at 9pm at night--so we wound up here. If you've been to one Elephant Bar, luckily, you've been to them all, they do uphold the same image, the same cleanliness and the same guidelines, it seems, at all their chains.
Our waitress was a sweetheart-- she handled our hungry, demanding table of five perfectly fine and got everybody their drinks and appetizers without any problems. They have some great mixed drinks and were willing to make any kind of drink concoction they had the ingredients for-- I think I may be a fan of this chain-- at least while I'm in the 209.. but shhh.. don't tell any one.. ;-)
An update and a wonderful one. My boyfriend and I were served by James. After taking our orders he refilled drink without asking, we didn't even see him see that we were out of our respective drinks - just like magic they showed up! I can only assume James is made of magic somehow. I got the Mahi Mahi Sandwich and my boyfriend got the Bacon Cheeseburger - both with Sweet potato fries as a side. And we got a sweet potato appetizer. There are never too many sweet potatoes. Both sandwiches were to die for and reasonably priced at 10$ per sandwich. The stawberry lemonade was delicious.
We ended up getting the cookie ice cream sandwich they offer and, oh god, so good. It has caramel ice cream instead of vanilla and it just made the meal. My boyfriend insisted we go back again and I can't argue with that.
Drawn to Modesto by the allure of a musical Saturday night with friends, we found ourselves Sunday morning needing rejuvenation and protein but unsure of our options. We pulled into a mall parking lot while I tried in vain to force Yelp to run on my cellphone. Frustrated, Terri looked across the asphalt plain and there stood salvation: The Elephant Bar & Restaurant! An oasis beckoned and we could not resist!
If you have never experienced the jungle themed restaurant, you should. Sure it's just an Applebee's in fancy clothes but whenever I enter one, I think of Jungleland in the magic kingdom.
After a couple cups of coffee, we managed to interpret the strange markings on the menu well enough to order: Mongolian Beef for the Mrs and the Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger for me, preceded by a cup of Tomato Basil Bisque.
Let me preface my statements by stating that I am a Tomato Basil nut! It could be made with water from a muddy puddle but I would still love it! Theirs was very, very good; in fact it would have been great if only served hot, but warm was good enough for me. With a tomato soup and a Bloody Mary, things were looking up!
Our meals were served and Terri went to work on the Mongolian Beef while I tackled my Cheeseburger. The patty was extra thick, though not particularly savory, and the entire thing had to be compressed to fit into what my loving wife calls my big mouth! It was prepared with "secret sauce" made of mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise (shh, don't tell anyone I told you.). The patty was prepared medium and the well garnished  sandwich was tasty. The accompanying French Fries were average but beneath a generous dose of ketchup were more than adequate. Meanwhile, Terri found her Mongolian Beef edible, describing it as "OK;" at $14 she was expecting more.
The environment was very appealing with the overall jungle theme and it looked like it could be a fun place, maybe with less of a hangover. Overall, we thought it was average food at above average prices.
I was surprisingly pleased with this place! This was my second time at an Elephant bar-- my first experience was years ago and wasn't memorable, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Anyway, we ordered the chicken wrap appetizer and it was REALLY good! It came with this peanut sauce and mango salsa that was really tasty.
For my meal, I ordered the shrimp and chicken jambalaya. I LOVE jambalaya, and I'd have to say, this was probably my most favorite one I've had so far! I was incredibly impressed that it wasn't super oily, like how it is at all the other restaurants I've been to. The dish had lots and lots of shrimp, chicken and andouille sausage-- not meager portions at all! The spice was a good level too!
The rest of my family got the Garlic Noodles with Shrimp, the Shrimp Adventure Platter, and the Kona BBQ Combo Platter, all of which looked and tasted great! My only complaint was that our waitress wasn't that great. She rarely stopped to see how we were doing and she never refilled our drinks. Other than that, I enjoyed my meal there!
Went there as we had comps from a corporate junket. Yes, its clean, yes children love it. I did try their tuna and they did grill it correctly, just barely warm inside. Nice stuff. Other than that, its just a fancy Denny's sans smelly people.
The help was good and attentive and they had Stella Artois on tap. I kid yee not. So if your bored, lost or just could not go into the horrific nightmare that is Vintage Faire Mall, just pop in here. Of course its corporate, chain, unimaginative.
I was in Modesto for a business trip and Elephant Bar was recommended to me by my coworkers.  The menu has a bit of everything  and happy hour starts at 9! Happy hour pricing offers discounts on certain cocktails and appetizers.  I tried a few things on the menu.  The lamb shanks were amazing, as was the Macau shrimp noodle soup.  We ended up having dinner at Elephant Bar three nights and I was never disappointed with the food quality or the service. Â
The menu is gigantic, so it was very overwhelming for me...as I am extremely indecisive when faced with even a small food menu!
The citrus creme brulee cheesecake is a fantastic thing to take with you to eat at your hotel room at 2 am!
My experience with this E-Bar was much better than at the Stockton location. Â Visiting with girlfriends is always fun.... especially when good food is involved. Â
Our server was prompt and courteous. Â She kept all of our drinks FULL.... I was impressed. Â My burger was fantastic. Â I wasn't in the mood for any Asian... vinegar, ginger type of meal. Â I wanted something pretty basic. Â My side salad was so huge, it could have been my entree.
After our meal, our server said the usual, 'room for dessert?' Â Let me tell you something.... the five girls in our party are all fun loving food lovers. Â Well, I can speak for myself. Â We ordered 3 desserts to share. Â We should have ordered one. Â
1. Â Giant Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich.... I wanted to hump it.... it was so good.
2. Â Creamy Creme Brulee..... So effing heavenly I wanted to smash my face into it... but it was in front of my friend and I think she would've stabbed me with her fork.
3. Â Elephant Bar Ice Cream Mud Pie.... this thing was in front of me most of the time.... it didn't even have a chance and neither did any of my dining companions.
Overall, good experience.
Stopped in here Xmas eve to escape the family for a bit.
Service was top notch and friendly at the bar. Staff was helpful in pointing us in the right direction of some things we wanted to check out while in an un-familiar town.
Food all looked good but was a bit pricey for what it was. Everything was very pan Asian and Indian elephants would have been more appropriate then the African theme that was everywhere. But hey at least it was not applebee's!
We did have some coconut shrimp skewers that were pretty good but again a bit over priced for what they were. This may just be that I am used to Seattle and not overly impressed with a newer place next to the mall with prices I would see at a downtown eatery *shrug*
Drinks were ok but nothing special, straight up no extra bit to much mixer but that can be typical and expected of chain places. I would probably go in again when back in town and try some other food.
From reading the other reviews, it would seem that people either love the Elephant Bar or hate it, and I would belong in the former category. I've yet to have a single problem with service and the food has always been delicious. The E-Bar is also the only place where I've consistently had at least one drink, and coming from a non-drinker that can only mean that the drinks here must be something special.
If you've been to an Elephant Bar before, you know what to expect when it comes to the food. The quality is on par with others that I've been to and the prices are, naturally, the same as well.
The service is pleasant, though the sprawling layout of the restaurant can make it difficult for the wait staff to reach everyone quickly. It would also seem that this location is a bit understaffed at the moment, so if you visit it may help to go in with a little patience. Trust me, the food is worth the wait.
The atmosphere is certainly unique to the area, creating a themed restaurant that manages to look good and feel fun, but relaxing at the same time. I have no doubt that I'll be returning again and again to the E-Bar, and you should give it a chance too.
I was so excited 2 years ago when I learned that they were opening up an Elephant Bar in Modesto. Â I'm originally from the Bay Area and had been to all of the locations throughout the Bay and had always found the food and atmosphere to be consistent. Â Since opening in Modesto, I've dined at EB probably 10 times over its existence hoping that, for one time only, the restaurant could redeem itself and provide me and my party a decent dining experience. Â It's never happened.
The food is always lousy, the management rude and unknowledgeable and the staff is never very attentive or friendly. Â The last time I dined there (last weekend), I had asked for a box to take my fish tacos home in. Â The waitress offered to box them, ended up dropping them on my foot --which then plopped onto the carpet under the table! She then proceeded to scoop it up with her fingers (box under the table on the floor by my feet!). Â She then put the box in front of me and said, "These are just fine, they didn't even touch the floor." Â If she couldn't have the chef remake another 2 tacos or have her manager comp the entree from my bill, just a simple apology would have sufficed! Â As she went to shut the box, she showed me the tacos and said, "See, you can have these for later!" Â I told her that I changed my mind that I didn't want to take them home afterall and that they had hair on them from hitting the floor! Â She says, "Don't be silly, these are fine!" Â and then proceeded to pawn the tacos off on me. Â On the way out, I informed the manager and he didn't seem to care.
Ok, so the reason for the 1 star is because the decor and theme is consistent with all other Elephant Bar restaurants and the bar is beautiful, too. Â Will I go back? Â Probably so (I know, I'm a glutton for punishment), but not in the near future and only because I am still waiting for a decent dining experience that made me love the Elephant Bar so much when I lived in the Bay Area.
