It's basic bar food but the service is the worst ever. My food arrived cold, the bread looked like a dog had cheewed on it, and when I sent it back the waitress got really upset with me. She had a terrible attitude and such a nasty look on her face. Slammed things around for the rest of our meal. Very nasty. She should be fired.
I called the bar and said if Denise is ever my server again I'm going to get up and walk out. They didn't care. AVOID.
I used to see this place all the time when my dad lived in the area. I never went in till the other night because it was open. Now I wish I had come in sooner. A little dark and 70's 'english pub' kitchy, but in a good way. This place is small! We went in the back way (they have parking in the back, and on the street) and the staff was very friendly and told us right away to have a seat anywhere. I can't speak for the drinks, as I was driving and didn't have any mixed drinks. The menu was interesting, and we just got the pizza. Man the pizza is good. And they are not bothered by special orders (in our case, a half and half). I will be going back.
Review Source:Elmhurst Tap Room has amazing food. The service is awful. Most of the waiters/waitresses wear name tags; ours didn't. I asked her for a refill of my water and called her "buckaroo" since she wasn't wearing a nametag; she FREAKED OUT. She swore at me and called me names. I asked to speak with a manager. The manager was even more unapologetic and rude than our waitress. I live a couple blocks from here and had been going for years; I have not set foot in the place since then. Avoid Elmhurst Tap Room if you don't want surly service and unhelpful management.
Review Source:I think I had taken a step back in time with the decor! No recent updates! But, that may not be to bad! Â The food makes you feel all warm and cozy inside! Great Pizza, Burger's, Fish & Chips & french onion soup! Our server was the best! Had a wonderful time! Good food, felt like family. Must make it a regular stop at least once a month if in the area! Â Not a huge place, so when busy, may have a wait. But, everyone there is friendly and fun. Makes you feel like you have been coming there for years!
Review Source:A friend called and invited me out to dinner and took me to the Tap Room. Â I've seen it out of the corner of my eye when I go TO THE ORIGINAL GONELLAS next door but never paid that much attention. Â The outside doesn't tell you how nice and cozy the inside is. Â We sat at the bar while we waited for our table and the bartender(dress?) was cooking 2 order of mussels (right on the edge of the bar) and one order of scallop stew. Â We were there for a burger and a beer. Â I now have to say that if I can't make it to Sidetracks in Ypsi, I can go to Elmhurst for a fix. Â Better than Biergartens. Â Their fries are those perfectly cooked ones and are really good. Â Altogether, it cost me $10.50 - but I think they forgot to charge for the beer. Â Makes it an even better place to go.
Review Source:Great find. Â We found this place by accident. Â
The place is dark and very red, great ambience and Sherry, our Bartender/Server was awesome and funny.
I had the Fish and Chips, great meal. Â My friends had the sausage sandwhich and the king crab sandwich. Â The food was great and so was the ambience, I highly recommend this place if your looking for a cool place to hang out after the Ford museum.
I love love love this place! Everything I've ever eaten here was great, their French Onion soup is one of my favorites as is their reuben & their pizza. Â They have different specials every night & I believe they do customer appreciation pizza on Tuesdays & it's always packed. Â Their prices are so reasonable & I love the fact that it's dark...it's actually a good place for a first date as the booths are each sort of closed off. Â They serve alcohol, they have great food, they have great prices...all in all this place is just plain great. Â The only downfall is that because they are so small you often have to wait for a table (it's worth it) though in the past I've actually asked & shared the only group table with the group of people who were already sitting there.
Review Source:The hubs and I went on a whim to the Elmhurst Tap Room when we were starving and I didn't feel like making anything. Â To us, being in the mood to eat greasy bar food is like being in the mood to breathe, and we get tired of the same old places.
When I walked into the ETR I felt like I had just walked back in time. Â It's very dark, very red, and very nostalgic. Â There were two elderly gentlemen sitting at a booth who both greeted us, and a very nice bartender. Â Surprisingly, the bar was stocked with a nice selection of both domestic and imports, as well as a big variety of both average and top shelf liquors. Â
Even more surprisingly, they have a huge menu! Â With everything from salads to soups to sandwiches, pizza and even steak. Â It being lunch, I ordered fish and chips and hubs ordered the monte cristo dip. Â Everything was tasty! Â The batter was nice and crispy, and the fish was very fresh. Â Hubs' used the word 'delectable' when describing his ham and cheese/french toast combo. Â
While we were there, several other patrons walked in - all over the age of 75 and started all talking with the owner and bartender. Â We felt like we were in a big family reunion listening to uncle Earl talking about his days at the track back in the day. Â And it felt cool. Â
If you are into the new, modern, trendy spots, avoid this location like the plague. Â But if you're comfortable in a place that looks like it could be on the set of LA Confidential, with good reasonably priced food, give this a try.
Elmhurst is a hidden gem in Dearborn. Yes, a bit dark and very red inside, but that's part of the charm--it's got the atmosphere without being forced, it's real. Unlike a certain bar across the street, when you walk in, it's not like you walked in on someone's basement party. Â
Great food and drinks, make that very good drinks! The gals know how to sling'em, they sure don't keep you thirsty, and are all friendly.
In my opinion, the burgers are better than Miller's and the pizza is pretty good too.
It's a place you can walk into not knowing anyone and leave knowing almost everyone. Â Although, some old-timer type regulars have their section of the bar, they're generally interesting and fun to watch.
Stopped in today for lunch. I've been curious to try it since other Yelpers have mentioned the good food. I should clarify I've been to the Tap Room a few times but didn't eat there, just had a few beers.
Since it was lunch, I ordered a soft drink. The menu shows $2.29, a bit pricey for pop, but not unusal. That is, until the waitress brings me a can of Diet Coke. Really? $2.29 for a 12 oz. can of pop? Even in a vending machine a can is around $1. I understand restaruants mark up products becuase they are serving it, but that was a bit too much for me.
The service was great, the burger was really good, but in the end I paid $11.50 for a burger, fries, and a can of diet coke. I like the place, but the price of the pop rubbed me the wrong way.
When I moved into the area, I asked my new neighbor for a good place to get a beer and burger after spending a day dragging furniture into my new home. He recommended this place. I figured "Imagine my luck, moving into a neighborhood with a Tap Room nearby. I can't wait to sample the many draft selections they most certainly have available."
I find the place (after cruising the block a couple times to get a parking spot) and open the door. Nice, old-school dimly lit bar, perfect for a grungy guy who needs a few cold ones. I find a booth open by the bar and await my server to sample the libations. And I await my server to sample the libations. (lather, rinse repeat for about 15 minutes) At last, a nice waitress comes up and offers me a menu. A quick look at the menu shows no Draft Beer List, so I ask if she has a list, rather than ask her to recite the anticipated multitudes of draft specialties that a place that calls itself a Tap Room must offer. "Swill National Brand, Swill Nation Brand Light, Swillier National Brand, Swillier National Lite, Bass (OK now where getting to the good stuff), Blue Moon and Goose Island." Hmm, a few keepers, but not what I was expecting. I order a Goose and decide on their "white" pizza special. The beer is cold, I'm cooling down from moving, and soon the beer is empty. Lather, rinse repeat. Waitress comes by with my pizza and sets it down, and leaves, apparently not noticing the empty glass. Now, I did not exactly chug this beer, and the time it took to make and bake the pie was about 20 minutes. I catch her attention and order another beer before digging into the pie. Not bad, interesting use of cheeses for the white effect and a good chewy crust. I take about half of the pie home to savor later, pay my bill and leave.
I decide, well, maybe it's just because the place was busy, I'll reserve judgement after another visit in a week or so. I drop in again about 9 days later and get much better service, and order some more Goose and decide on the Elmhurst Burger. When it comes in a few minutes, it's nicely done, thick and juicy with no complaints. Service is better as the place is about 2/3 full (it probably holds 80 people if it's packed) and I say that this place will go into the rotation.
I have been a few more times and only give the place a 3 instead of 4 because if it's full it can take a awhile to get served and parking can be a pain (It's on the same block of Outer Drive as V. Gonella's http://www.yelp.com/biz/… ). Worth the effort, but don't expect 40 micro-brews on-tap or an extensive list of rare brews by the bottle. It's a good burger and pizza with a cold pitcher place with usually friendly and efficient staff.
