Went there for New Years Eve with my Husband, and another couple. Â We weren't sure if this was the "right" location for NYE but we had never been here before, and didn't know the area well..so we walked around, came back, and decided it appeared to be the CLEANEST bar in the area...GREAT Choice! We were served with a free appetizer just for deciding to stay. Â Excellent Customer Service! It was Perfect! Beer was Great, Music was Fantastic, Extremely Clean, and Plenty of Seating. We truly enjoyed ourselves! Can't wait to go back and give them our service!!
Review Source:Formally The Vermont Tavern and before that Nelson's, new owners have taken over and appropriately renamed the bar the Erie Ale House. It's a great name that takes pride in the fact that, hey, we're in Erie and we love it here. The interior is similar as before. It's a nice, somewhat modern decor peppered with old photos of Erie among the original brick walls. The food menu is basic and could use some work. It does not stand out - you might not want to take someone here on a first date if you're trying to impress them with food. The bar DOES have an awesome selection of beers though, which is becoming a popular and welcome trend at State Street bars.
Where the Erie Ale House stands out is the fact that you can actually have a conversation here. Unlike most bars on State Street, even Plymouth nowadays, where you have to yell in order to talk to the people that you are with, this bar keeps the music as background noise. The bartender (who was extremely friendly) let me know that this would ALWAYS be the case as well. This is much appreciated. I am rooting for the Erie Ale House to do well. When I am looking for a quiet, clean, well-serviced place to have a conversation, this will always be the perfect place to go. I'll definitely be back.
