Ate here two nights in a row. Food is good, atmosphere is as well. Service was a little lacking, Sat night-slow, ordered drinks didn't come which can be significant if you like wine with your meal. People at table next to us who had the same waiter did not get food that was ordered. So, some improvement is needed. However, the staff overall is friendly, helpful and engaging. Mike was great and helped us with selecting places to see downtown and they credited an appetizer to make up for the trouble which was a nice gesture. Will go there again for sure. Need to improve signage and entrance for out of towners.

We walked in as a couple on Saturday night without a reservation; first time there and I was immediately extremely impressed with the atmosphere! A well-dressed man playing holiday music on a baby grand piano greeted us with a big smile; a roaring free-standing fireplace offered warmth and great visuals both on the bar side and the restaurant side; lighting was intimate and romantic. (I agree it would benefit greatly from bolder signage outside.)

Our waiter was extremely attentive, friendly and helpful, allowing both of us to make alterations to our dinner orders. We ordered the small side salad, which they split for us in the kitchen, and it was such a huge portion even split! I agree it's better when entrees include soup or salad, but when you split the huge side salad ($4.95), adding $2.50 to each entree is certainly no big deal. Bread was warm and plentiful, with an interesting side flavor I couldn't quite place, but was very appealing.

I ordered the Tilapia alla Livornese, a good value at $14.95, and switched the garlic roasted potatoes for what turned out to be a huge portion of pasta--yum! So much food I took exactly half of it home. My date requested Veal Marsala, which wasn't on the menu at all, but Chicken Marsala was, so he figured it was worth a try. The waiter accommodated our changes in a positive way, and came back many times to offer more water and drinks, and to be sure we were content. The Veal Marsala was SO perfectly prepared, with just the right edge of crisp outer crust and seasonings, that we actually requested to compliment the chef, live, personally! The chef arrived at our table and was very pleased with our praise, especially when we stressed he MUST add this to their regular menu! It was really the best Veal Marsala I have ever tasted, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think anyone negatively reviewing a new restaurant in its budding stage is unfair. With all the multiple background details, it's obvious it takes awhile to get everything shipshape and get into the groove of great service and perfectly prepared food. Chill out! Give them a couple months to get up to snuff, then return again and write a solid review of your experience. Especially when there's a big need for upscale dining in this area, bursting their bubble so early on certainly can't help this to happen, or for new places to come into their own in time for their business to stay and grow.

Our overall experience was, in a word, perfection. I HIGHLY recommend Fiamico and have been talking it up all weekend to anyone who'll listen. I'm sorry I waited so long to try it, but I positively will return, and regularly!

My friend and I went there on a Saturday night without reservations. We went there at the last minute with less than an hour to go before a concert we were going to attend. The place was packed. The owner himself took our order and accomodated us with seating. I was very impressed with his prompt attention. We ordered the tortellini and it was excellent. We were able to get in and out within the hour and make it in time to see the show. Parking was adequate. One thing I would suggest is that the restaurant should have some kind of sign on the outside of the building. We just happened to stumble upon it. I did not see a sign with the name of the restaurant on the outside. It was a good experience for us. We will definitely go back there to try some of their other dishes.

This is my 2nd time at this restaurant. For the location, and the price point, I thought it was decent. A friend and I went to dinner on a Friday night, there was a nice mix of folks - families, couples etc. Great atmosphere. The service was pretty good. We ended up sharing their Salmon dish, it was an enjoyable dinner. If you are looking for knock out 5 star cuisine, this may not be the place for you. But if you are ok with a good atmosphere, good food and a decent price, I recommend them for sure. I agree with another Yelper, I really want this place to make it. There really is not much in that area, and that restaurant is in a good location. Hope you give them a try, and when you do, remember to leave a review! Thanks.

They get one star for the nice interior, and one star for the tortellini I had (which was pretty good despite the VERY watery cream sauce the rest of the dish was swimming in), but it ends right there for me.

Such a sad experience dining here. I had such high hopes, too. Where to start?

Our server sucked - completely apathetic and slower than a snail on valium. We had to ask for a bread basket as we saw other diners with them but we were not offered any. When I asked, I was told it was in the oven - fine, but that could have been said at the beginning, something like, "folks your bread is in the oven but I'll have it out for you when it is ready".

We ordered a wood-fired pizza for an appetizer and it came with a burnt crust and very soggy bottom.

Chicken wrapped in prosciutto was dry and the pre-formed mashed potatoes were not fresh and extremely bland.

No offer of fresh grated Parmesan... what kind of Italian restaurant are you???

I think the server had it in for us when we advised him that we had a http://restaurant.com certificate - I noticed he was MUCH nicer to the tables around us. Oh, and way to act like a condescending jerk when it came time to redeem the certificate. You might want to actually ASK a person if they have used them before rather than assume they haven't, and harping on repeatedly about the 18% mandatory gratuity just shows you all he really cared about.

He was actually lucky there, because had it not been stipulated on the certificate, he would have gotten NOTHING. NOT A DIME.

HE WAS THAT CRAPPY. Worst server I have encountered in ages.

And really, if you are going to be pretentious enough to NOT include soup or salad with entrees, then you better have the ambiance, service, and food quality to back up that snobby nonsense.

Fiamico's had none of the above.

Again, to be fair, the interior was nice and the tortellini dish I had was pretty good.

But you will never, EVER catch me setting foot in this place again.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner Saturday night. It is fantastic that Waukegan once again has a top-notch restaurant with a very pleasant atmosphere and excellent food. My wife and I split a chicken apple and walnut salad and salmon and jumbo shrimp dinner. Both were delicious and the portion sizes were more than ample. The service was good and the waiter seemed very knowledgable about the various entrees. We are looking forward to going back on a Sunday morning for breakfast.

(2 1/2 stars) We went to Fiamico for an early Sat. dinner. We were greeted promptly at the door and seated. The dining room was 10-20% full. The room was pleasant with Tuscan colors. The ample windows let in a lot of light. Bread, oil, cheese and water arrived almost immediately. As someone else noted the wine list is short but has a nice selection. I would add that the wine seems reasonably priced.

Our server arrived shortly to take our orders. He didn't mention any specials they might have and we forgot to ask. We skipped appetizers and ordered entrees. The entrees seem to be reasonably priced until you realize that they do not include soup or salad. Soup is a $5.95 addition.

Pork tenderloin - You get four quarter sized disks of pork and some pre-formed mashed potatoes. My pork was overcooked. The Marsala sauce was good. The potatoes had an unappetizing color, kind of grey-green and were the shape of a large hockey puck. They were room temperature.

Polo Veseuvo - One dry looking piece of chicken, some potatoes and some peas on the plate. Little or no sauce.

Nonna Pasta (spaghetti and meat balls) - The portion size was slightly larger than what you would expect for a child's portion. It was covered liberally (too much) with grated cheese. Since we had grated cheese on the table they should have left it off the pasta. The meatballs were small but tasty.

I don't remember what our other guest had (a pasta dish) but she didn't comment so I guess it was OK. Our server stopped by when we were just about finished to ask if everything was OK.

Bottom line: Service was mostly OK, food is a bit pricey for the smallish portions. Still worth a try if you are in the area.

So sad. I was really looking forward to having a nice dinner instead of eating at the concession stand at the Genessee theater. How exciting, italian restaurant (non-descript italian restaurant.) Where's the signage, anywhere? I could smell it was a restaurant from afar (in a good way.) But you really couldn't tell from the exterior. It's like an underground club, you have to look for the entrance.

In any case, the service was really really abominable. Pleasant people, just incredibly slow. I think we waited at least an hour before our food arrived. I ordered the Lombatello alla Griglia, fancy italian words for grilled skirt steak. It came, and there were too paltry pieces of skirt steak, the size of my 8 year old daughter's hands for $16.95. No wonder. Here I thought I was getting a deal. The pizzas were great, but the service was so slow. I don't know how this place is going to stay in business. We probably would have ordered more drinks, but the waiter never came by!!

Great place to relax with family or friends. The gnocchi is delicious and everyone there is very friendly. I've gone there to sit down and eat as well as ordering dishes to go. When I put in my order to take with me they still sat me at a table while I waited and brought me glass of water and delicious bread while I waited free of charge. You do not see too many restaurants like this in Waukegan, but it is a great find!

Food is really great. Service is really lacking. We waited over 20 minutes for service on the patio so we left. Servers were lackluster in clearing tables. It's not rocket science; if 2 couples are waiting for tables, clear off 2 tables and seat them. Instead one person was clearing all the bar glasses form tables, another was clearing napkins, another was wandering around wiping a table here and there and no one noticed we were waiting. No fewer than 6 servers/busers were working the patio. Not to mention the hostess should inform the servers (verbally) that people are waiting since clearly they could not see. The hostess just brought us out there and said they were still clearing tables, so she handed us menus and left. I could run a restaurant better than this. Poor service comes from poor leadership.

We've been there 3 times and each time the food was very good. Pizza's and focaccia are baked in a high temperature wood oven. The Margherita pizza is made with fresh basil, imported cheese, and tomatoes is very much like those found in Italy. We've tried the lasagna, pasta with vodka sauce, clam sauce, and carbonara which are all very good. Everything is fresh and tastes of high quality ingredients. For dessert the cannoli is great. The shells are crisp and flavorful and the filling is excellent.

The restaurant décor is nicely done in stone, tile, and wood. There is a nice seating area on the East side of the building with large windows and view of Lake Michigan. The bar and bar dining is spacious with a variety of table sizes and heights. There is a small wine list with a nice selection, quite a few craft beers, and full bar options. The location is walking distance to the harbor and the Genesee Theater. There is a patio that will open later this spring. There is a parking lot. The staff is friendly and efficient. We'll definitely add it to our restaurant rotation.

Went on a Thursday for dinner and it wasn't too crowded. It has some views of Lake Michigan and the marina if you sit at the back. Its a very charming place, warm and inviting. As for the food, I've heard they have outstanding wood oven pizzas but I opted for the penne alla vodka with prosciutto and peas. My boyfriend chose the salmon by recommendation from the waitress. Both were very good. The pasta was well cooked and the sauce was just right! We had coffee and tiramisu for dessert. I've been searching for a tiramisu as good as Bottaio in Libertyville. This one come very close! All in all a great experience and we will be back.... A lot!
