Thus far my favourite Resturant in Key Largo- huge selection, great food & service. We had the cracked conch, conch fritters, key largo oysters, fried soft-shell for apps then for entrées we had pan seared hogfish, grilled scallops and more key largo oysters. Everything was really outstanding but the fried soft shell crab. It was just good. I'm a fried soft shell nut, to I really critique them
Review Source:We took the advice of other "yelpers" and tried the Fish House.  We are so glad we did!!!!!  The Mahi Matecumbe was AMAZING!!!!!  We also tried the  Pan Sautéed Yellowtail Snapper, and that was very good too - but we'd definitely recommend the Matecumbe style Mahi!!!  The portions are very large and everything was perfectly prepared.  We tried the key lime pie, which was good, but we weren't big fans of their meringue topping though.
We will definitely be back and have already told others to try the Fish House!
Yuck. We were totally turned off right off the bat.. What a bummer, I was waiting  to try this restaurant all week and it was a total let down. We were very disappointed to hear that most of the items were shipped in FROZEN... The only part of the meal we enjoyed was the coleslaw, that may or may not have been made in house.. Our hotel was about 1.5 miles away and we all had to rush to the bathroom before we even got back...
Review Source:Mahi matecumbe style was very good, but fried mahi as fish and chips was poor at best. Rubbery and dry. Maybe an off day, but considering how pricey this place is (40 for lunch excluding tip - no apps no
cocktails no dessert) I was bummed. It should be said that service was friendly as others suggest; I really wanted to like this place!
Interesting place. The food was decent but I thought overpriced compared to the competition that's the only reason for the two stars.  Portions were shareable. For starters we got the  chiveche and the fried oysters.  Both were passable.  Our mains were stuffed shrimp, the key lime scallop and shrimp and the scallop and shrimp marinara.  The key one scallop and shrimp was the only one that left an impression.
Review Source:This rating is based on one dish, the Mahi-mahi (dolphin, the fish, not the mammal) Matecumbre. Â The fish was as perfectly cooked and as fresh and tasty as possible. Â I mean perfect. Â The covering of tomato, basil, capers, green onion, etc, accentuated the subtle flavor without masking it. Â I would go back just for this dish.
On the other hand, they served us the WORST CALAMARI EVER!!.  I have owned  a restaurant. I know that most calamari sold in the US comes frozen. That is ok. It freezes well. But this was bought frozen and pre-breaded and had no flavor. was tough and dismal. A place that specializes in seafood, and which has the ability to serve us one of the best fishes dishes we have ever eaten in restaurants around the world, should be embarrassed by this.  And should change it immediately.
Service was nice and super casual. Â Bartender was chatty but not intrusive. Â Drinks were fine. Â Other items on the plates of people near us looked excellent and their comments about those dishes were all positive to glowing. Definitely try this place, just not the calamari.
This is absolutely, hands-down, nothing else is even close, my very favorite seafood restaurant on the planet! Pretty strong endorsement from a guy who has eaten in countless seafood restaurants, but I think you'll find that the Fish House has discovered that magical quality of bringing together extremely fresh seafood, excellent preparation, top-notch customer service, and a casual, fun and playful atmosphere which has been popular with their regular customers for years.
The Fish House can be found in Key Largo, FL along the Overseas Highway at Mile Marker 102.4 on the ocean side. The building looks as though it should be featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.....but truthfully that funky casualness is a big part of their charm. Owners C.J. Berwick and Doug Prew have operated the restaurant since the late 80s, and they proudly admit that many of their crew have been with them since the early days.
No white tablecloths here......the ceiling is covered with fishing nets and crazy multi-colored Florida Keys-inspired Christmas light strands. The walls are filled with photos, maps, fish, shellfish, and maritime paraphernalia. This is a super casual place where you can sit down for an excellent dinner after a long day of boating, scuba diving, or sunning.
Fresh fish is The Fish House's trademark, brought to the back door daily by local commercial fishermen, then filleted and prepared on premise... the finest in "Florida Keys Conch-style" cooking. You'll find yellowtail snapper, mahi-mahi, grouper, Wahoo, Cobia, Amberjack, yellowfin tuna, Florida lobster, and stone crab. Because the fish is locally caught, sometimes they might not have a particular species on the menu that day.
Start your meal with some smoked fish, one of their great chowders, conch fritters, or any of their other seafood appetizers (including a raw bar). Smoked fish is one of the house specialties and you'll find both smoked fish chunks and smoked fish dip that is prepared from fish which has been smoked right on premise. The restaurant typically gets busy at night, so don't be surprised to see a complimentary serving of smoked fish dip with crackers, or the smoked fish chunks sitting by the cash register to enjoy while you wait for your table.
Seafood is what's for dinner (although they do have a few chicken and red meat dishes for the landlubbers in your group). Fresh fish can be prepared pan sautéed (dusted with flour, dipped in egg wash, and then sautéed with butter, lemon, and sherry), Matecumbe style (topped with fresh tomatoes, shallots, basil, capers, olive oil, lemon juice, and then baked), or fried, broiled, blackened, Jamaican Jerk, grilled, or several other creative ways. The menu also has shrimp, crab, oysters, scallops, conch, lobster, combination platters, pastas, sandwiches and salads.
Please save some room for their legendary Key Lime Pie made with graham cracker crust, creamy sweet / tart key lime filling, and topped with a lightly-browned meringue. This is the authentic Florida Keys version made in-house every day.
The Fish House serves beer, wine, sangria, plus a full bar, and they have a complete seafood market where you can buy fresh fish by the pound, shellfish, and ceviche, conch salad, smoked fish cubes, and smoked fish dip to go.
Give this place a try and I promise that you will become a regular!
O' my gosh, I love this place. Â It is a must go to, I went for lunch and dinner it was so good. Â The food is amazing and you have to get the key lime pie. Â The service is what makes this place great. Â I was with a large group on a dive trip. Â A group member was having a B-day so the staff put a candle in the mouth of this huge Grouper Fish and sang happy birthday! Â By the time the real desert came, the picture they took was in a frame-like card and being passed around for us to all sign. Â It made her day!
Review Source:What a great dinner here at the Fish House in Key Largo!!!! We were immediately greeted at the door with a friendly gentlement who said it would only be a 5 minute wait or so (on a Saturday night). Â We had a quick drink at the bar and it was time for our table before we even took our first sip. The bar was crowded but it was a nice seaside environment. The bartender was very nice, friendly and accomodating. Â The decor here was perfect for the area. Â It really gave you a feel for being in the Florida Keys. Â There were nautical pictures all over the walls. Lots of different police badges from all over the country posted up by the entry way and lots of fun details scattered around. Everywhere you looked there was visual interest. Â This place is in no way fancy but casual and laid back is there way of life there. Â Service was on point. Even though it was super busy, our waitress was very attentive. Â She made great suggestions off the menu and was friendly and professional. Â Ok here's the best part of this restaurant::: THE FOOD! Mmmmm I'm salivating just thinking about how fresh and yummy the grub was here. Â We ordered the mussels, cerviche, the cheesy oysters and the mahi mahi matacumbe. Â One was better than the other. I don't even like mussels usually and these were absolutely fabulous. Â They served with garlic bread to dip in the mussel cheesy garlicy oil. Â Everything on the menu looked great and I wish we would have been able to try more. Â It's an unforgettable meal and I suggest everyone that is driving down to Key Largo stop by. Â This is an absolute MUST visit. Â You will be soooooo glad you stopped in (I would go back to Key Largo again JUST to eat here, it's THAT good)!
Review Source:Fish House have always been one of my favorite hidden gems. I'm still celebrating my bornday and my hubby has yet been here so I decided we should dine down in the Keys to wrap up my bornday month.
As always, the Margaritas and food were delish!!! My husband enjoyed his Alpine Yellowtail snapper and I enjoyed the fried combination of variety of fish. I usually have Matecumbe but I was in the mood for grease which is not normal for me and I have to say it was good! Â
I've heard they're Key Lime pie is good. I'm not into pie, but if you like ice cream the coconut ice cream is a must! Â I don't like coconut much but, that ice cream is light, fresh and homemade and VERY delicious! Even if you're full it's so light that you can afford at least 3 bites.
If you decide to come down to Key Largo, make sure you stop by and enjoy a lunch or dinner! And besides when it's your bornday u might get a little surprise by your waiter...I'll post a pic of my past bornday surprise here at Fish House a couple years back!
Holy cow, this place rocked. Started with the NE Clam Chowder. Solid effort for being 1500 miles from NE. Then I ordered the grilled grouper sandwich, and my wife ordered the blackened mahi sandwich. Absolutely awesome. Planned to order key lime pie, but no room for dessert. What a find.
Review Source:Good food. Everyone loved the lobster bisque (except me. ..i am sadly allergic to it).
The fish has won statewide awards and so has the key lime pie. After eating here, I can see why. While the food was a bit pricey, I'm from Columbus, Ohio and don't get a chance to get fresh fish and properly made key lime pie often :)
Having just arrived starving in Key Largo at 4:00 in the afternoon, we stopped into the Fish House for a late lunch. The place had some customers, but later in the evening, it appears to get huge crowds. Â We had the conch fritters (I think they were ok....I need to do some further comparisons), the fish and chips, the crab cake, the burger, and the pan fried snapper. The fish was fresh as can be. So tasty. The crab cake was not what we are used to back home, but my son liked it. For dessert, even though we were NOT hungry, we had the key lime pie. Delicious. But, we just arrived so we will do some further comparisons to see how it stands up. The service was fine and the food came very quickly.
Review Source:-yellow tail snapper/metacumbre style________good
-shrimp cocktail (5 for 12$) ------------less than good
-lobster bisque______less than good
-new england clam chowder _____bad, returned
-crab stuffed shrimp______good
-margarita_____great
-key lime pie______good
=80$ w/out tip
all in all, the food was less than spectacular, and the staff seemed like they were hurrying us. Â I'm a huge seafood fan so I was hoping for more for my money. Â If you're looking for a high end seafood restaurant with a wow factor of 10, I would NOT recommend this restaurant. Â This can't be all that Key Largo has to offer...
Three Fresh Mahi plates and a crab stuffed shrimp. Â The place is always hopping and you can't beat the food and service for the price. Â They have a fish market in the front so you can buy it and cook it at home. Â We have never been disappointed when eating here. It's a must stop for us if we are in the Keys. Â The prices run app $20-30 based on your meal. Â I highly recommend stopping in for dinner.
Review Source:My family went on our last night in the Keys. Overall, I'd say that this is an ok place, bordering on "eh". The only standout here is their Key Lime Pie, which helped ease the mood at the end.
Service was pretty terrible. The table next to us had a different waiter who was so much better than ours, because they were seated, received their plates and left after paying a good while longer before we did! At one point my dad went up to the restroom and came back saying that there were many plates just waiting to be served by waiters, just sitting there at the kitchen! Come on!
Here are the things that particularly stand out in my mind, good or bad:
-Complimentary crackers and butter: really??
-Clam chowder: there's a taste of authenticity, that it was made from scratch. Although it could use a bit of salt and pepper, the clam chowder was a hit around the table.
-Cioppino over pasta: I have a problem with this being marketed as cioppino (notice that it has a different name on the online menu- sneaky and naughty! D:), because it really tasted like a soupy tomato sauce with seafood poured over pasta. Cioppino really should NOT be put over pasta, and should stand on its own. I couldn't get the flavor of the cioppino because there was just so much pasta on top of it, and I couldn't enjoy the pasta because the cioppino didn't give any taste to it. Like I said, the two things do NOT belong together. Also: presentation was sloppy. You can see in the picture that they either poured something in or out and it wasn't cleaned up. Sloppy.
-Dad's fish served a la style-that-Bobby-Flay-recommended was ok.
-Key Lime pie: the ONLY reason why this review is 3/5 instead of 2/5. Creamy and tart, with a crumbly graham cracker crust. We all LOVED it, and we would have probably ordered another one if we didn't think we'd end up waiting forever to get a new piece, pay and leave.
Smoked fish dip and bacon-wrapped scallops are to die for. Stone crab of course is good. Ceviche... not bad but I've had much better. Key lime pie always refreshing but not anything noteworthy here.
Ambiance is typical Keys nautical-tacky (which I love). The service is OK. Forgot a few things we ordered and had to ask for things a few times, but very friendly and fairly quick. Â All in all, I would come back again and again!
We were here after a tiring snorkeling trip, so you can imagine how famished we were. And this place did not disappoint us.
First of all, the service was mindbogglingly fast! If not for the friendly server who consistently poked my indecisive friend to order his meal after we were done ordering ours, Â I would have given the fifth star.
Four of us had the matecumbe with different fish types, and they were quite good. One got the soft crab sandwich and we shared fried calamari which were fine The highlights had to be the cocktails, mojitos and the KEY LIME PIE! Simply Exquisite!
The decor is very cheerful and the servers take good care of you throughout.
What all of the other reviews say about the food is accurate. Â The food is good, the fish is fresh. Â However, this is not a 2 dollar sign restaurant. Â It is definitely $$$. Â and as the cost of the meal goes up, I get pickier. Â Our meal of two fish dishes, one app and one glass of wine (no other beverage and no dessert) was $73. Â The ceviche at $10.99 was three quarters diced tomatoes and one quarter "fish". Â an excellent meal at $60-$65, an okay meal at $73. Â Considering the service was decent, a 20% tip brings it to $88.
Review Source:It is all about the food. Conch fritters had real, legit, conch chunks inside. Â For my entree, I ordered the Matecumbe w/ Snapper. Incredible. I know people complain about the service (kind of rushing you along). I felt that way too, but at the end of the day, it was all about the fish. I will be back!
Review Source:I will start by saying that the seafood is excellent. Â I got an entree that had blackened lobster, shrimp, scallops, and fish (It was called the 'Seafood Combo' - see the attached picture) and my wife had the Mahi-Mahi fish & chips. Â Everything tasted super-fresh. Â It was only $1 extra to have my combo blackened and it was well worth the upgrade. Â The average price for entrees is $20-30, so the seafood is qualitatively on-par with the price. Â The service is also solid and the dishes are served very quickly. Â My wife and I received both plates in no more than 10 minutes after ordering. Â
As for the downfalls, the decor is tacky and the place is crowded and loud. Â The quality and price of the food just doesn't match with the decor and ambiance. Â The side dishes were unimpressive and were worthy of cafeteria food. Â Both entrees came with cole slaw and fries and crackers with butter (boring!!!) is the complimentary 'appetizer.' Â
But, all things considered, if you are heading out of the Keys after a long day at sea like I was, this is a decent pit-stop.
I had the snow crab thanks to the waiter (who was soooo nice) and was glad I got it! It was soooo fresh and delicious. Cole slaw was pretty awesome too, but I'm convinced the corn is frozen.
My husband had the combination and I got to try... there was a white fish (amazing) & mahi mahi (delish) that I couldn't stop picking on.
THis place was recommended by the hotel we were staying at. Inside was dive-y ish but super cute & soooo Key West.
Stop in for fresh seafood, you wont be disappointed.
I love coming on a lazy weekend afternoon and sitting by the water. Â Great selection of food but the service was average. Â I guess when you schlepping food and drinks all the way down the boardwalk in the heat it gets tiring.
Food was very good and after a few drinks - what me worry? Â I'll be back.
Gets crowded with tourists and locals but still maintains a laid back "Keys Style" to it not only in food but in atmosphere.
Being a market and a restaurant combination, you can hardly beat the fish selection or the freshness of the fish they serve. I usually like my fish done simple, sort of Appalachian or Nordic simple, not all dolled up with add on fancy flavor detracting things like pistachio crusting or the like. However, here I had the Matecumbe Special Mahi Mahi with tomatoes, shallots, basil, olive oil and lemon, and loved every taste and every last morsel of it; truly a rather local exotic delight to my delicate (don't laugh!!) discerning palate.
The menu is complete, really complete in a massive sort of way and the service, quick, knowledgeable, helpful and efficient. Indeed, the wait staff is well organized, knows the menu and are in a "no fooling around" sort of way similar to short order diner type efficient.
So, for a simple fresh fish meal at a reasonable price, I haven't found a place much better than this.
We came here for lunch after a morning snorkeling trip. Â Alan is first mate recommended it. Â The food was good but it does not stand out. Â It is a place that you would go to if you are in the area, but you won't drive 30 minutes to come here.
We had the mahi mahi, mussels, key lime pie. Â They were all good.
Wow!!
Thank you Yelp! we would have never tried this place if it hadn't been for all the reviews that had been left! I am so so happy we tried it, there were three of us at the table (we had to wait 30 mins to be seated, but it wasn't that bad) it was really busy. Â We weren't sure what to have, so we asked the waiter who was really friendly he recommended a few dishes to us, we were not really sure what to expect.
The food was so fantastic!!! the mussels are amazing!! you must try them!! the sauce they are in is fantastic.
We also had the hogfish and the Conch, all of it was delicious and each dish complimented each other.
We didn't have any dessert, but we were all very happy with our meal.
I would def recommend this place to anyone who is a seafood lover :)
Oh not forgetting, the decor is pretty cute, there are lots of hanging string lights.
Always save the best for last! Â Oink oink, I'm not a pig, but I play one on TV.
On the last day of vacation in the upper keys is reserved for the Fish House. A welcome reward for a hungry captain and crew for the return home. Â Prices are moderate for the food and setting. Â Our group of 5 were tired from packing for the trip back home. Service was great attentive with great suggestions.
Most all of the plates were licked clean. I'd even lick the table and floor but everything went straight into my snout Oink oink, Sorry, no room for desert in this fat belly. See I told you I'm not a pig. Oink! Snort.
We stopped by this neighborhood gem on the drive from Miami to the Keys, and had a very enjoyable lunch =). The place is super cute, with a nautical decorating scheme, and lights strung across the ceiling of the whole restaurant.
I ordered the lobster reuben and it was awesome! I'm a fan of lobster, and a fan of reubens, so I knew it would be a hit, and I was right! Mmm..giant chunks of lobster, definitely order this one if you're a fan of reuben sandwiches!
Prices are reasonable too! Although granted, coming from NYC, the prices almost everywhere look reasonable in comparison haha.
We stopped in today for lunch and after reading the reviews I was skeptical, but this seemed like a good choice.
First impressions is a crap hole from the outside and when entering the building the same theme follows. Â We are perfectly okay with restaurants that need a remodel or cleaned if they score well in the other categories. Â
There was help everywhere. Â My elbow was being bumped once a minute by the help, not customers leaving. Â We were seated right away, and since we have a long car ride ahead we only went with lunch entrees. Â
I ordered the Matecumbe (on the food network) with the grouper and waiter recommended the rice and beans. Â Meal came fast, presentation was okay, it was in this old skillet and just didn't look clean. Â Taste wise it was very good. Â I would highly recommend this meal. Â $15.99
My boyfriend ordered the mahi mahi pan seared with fries $11.99 and added cole slaw for $1.99. Â Presentation was horrible, Â looked like dennys meal.
I was enjoying my meal and asked how his was. Â He didn't care for it so I gave it a try. Â It was horrible. Â The light breading on his fish just had a bad sour taste. Â After not eating the fish someone eventually came by and was trying to take the plates away. Â I stopped her and was questioning what was on the fish and stated it was horrible. Â She did not care and just came back and told us what was in the beading. Â
We asked for the bill, paid and will not return. Â My meal wasnt good enough ever to go back. Â Atmosphere, service, 50% good food is why I'll keep them at two stars. Â Next time we will pass this on by.
