Save your calories because this is a real fish and chips experience! Â And the beer is amazing! Â We ate an early lunch on the deck overlooking the farmer's market and the waitress was so nice to us that I almost felt apologetic. Â The table next to us just happened to be a group of nuns in full habit! Â They were so cute and so polite to our flashy waitress. Â After eyeing all of their orders, I believe that I would love anything that I ordered here. Â The French fries or "chips" are jumbo amazing icons of a bygone era. Â Large portions and great service. Â The view of the mountains around is gorgeous. Â You won't be disappointed.
Review Source:TL;DR: This place is awesome (I've only been there during the day). I sat outside on their sweet patio, got some bomb food (No joke, it was pretty good), and drank beer with my buds. The best part was these two people were just chilling playing their folk instruments outside while we ate. Service is good to, I highly recommend this place.
Review Source:Our group of 9 stopped in at Flanagan's for a late lunch. I called ahead to see if there was much of a wait. The sweet waitress had our table all ready for us when we got there with waters poured and everything. We started with garlic fries, buffalo wings and a few beers then moved right into lunch. The portions are huge! I'd say definitely go with the wings or the Buffalo Burger if you are a fan. I loved them. My girlfriend loved the Banger. They made a special toasted cheese sandwich for our newly vegetarian youngster that she loved. My son couldn't get enough of the fries. Â Super warm service, yummy food. This is a great place to warm up after a cool stroll along the coast.
Review Source:This is cool family owned pub that serves some delicious fish and chips! I loved the small town atmosphere and the awesome patio with a fireplace. This is a perfect place to grab a beer with friends. I was here when a couple local bands were playing and was impressed with the amount of people who came out to support. If you are in the area, definitely pop in and grab a beer.
Review Source:Wear your buffet pants, friends. You'll need the extra stretch after finishing a plate of Fish 'n' Chips. The food was good...usual pub fare. Good service, greasy tables. Speaking of tables, many of the tables are a bit too close to the pool table. So watch out unless you want some guy's rear end and cue stick in your face while you're trying to eat. KISS ME, I'M IRISH
Review Source:Joe is INCREDIBLE. His staff = the same. We had our wedding in Carmel Valley. The noise ordinance is such that all dancing/music had to be off by 10pm. So! We held an after party at Flanagan's (a 30 second walk from our recommended hotel).
Joe got his Karaoke DJ to come in for our After Party for a, in the grand scheme of wedding costs, *very* small fee. I cannot recommend this place for
events/drinking/eating enough. Also ... be sure to try the 'Grand Slam' shot. It'll blow your mind.
Thanks to Joe and the whole Flanagan's team! Nothing better than watching video of my new in-laws belting "American Pie" after all was said n' done.
Great place for a group! I've eaten here a few times now and they have great bar style grub. Cobb salads, burgers, hot HOT wings, fish tacos and tons more to choose from. Their wings are great, very spicy and served with a creamy blue cheese and carrots/celery to chew on. The cobb salad is big and all the fresh tomatoes, crispy bacon, shredded turkey, avocado and hardboiled egg sliced up. The honey mustard dressing is really creamy and a perfect dressing for this salad.
The staff is friendly, nice and very accommodating - they never rush you. The outside patio is lovely on a sunny day and many umbrellas for shade. Also a great place to come and watch any game on the big screen!
I hate to write this review, but here it goes.
I Yelped "Outdoor Dining" in Carmel, wanting to take my boyfriend to a really nice place with some good scenery. Â We were pleased with the nice weather, good views of the beautiful surrounding mountains, and sat down to a great appetizer of the wings (delicious) and a nice meal of fish tacos (me) and the Big Mick (my boyfriend). Â They were both delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed it going down. Â
However, approximately 10 hours later, a little less than the time it takes for food to make it's way through my system, my stomach was purging itself of everything else that may have been unintentionally layered on top of the fish taco in an effort to get it out. Â I spent from 11pm to 4am worshipping the porcelain goddess, and it HAD to be the fish tacos, considering that everything else my boyfriend and I ate had been the same throughout the day. Â On a good note, I got to find out what a wonderful and attentive boyfriend he was. Â Â
My boyfriend was fine with what he ate, so if you go, stick to the pub fare, and work hard not to violate the three country rule. Â If eating at a British restaurant in the US, eat British or American food. Â Not Mexican. Â If eating Chinese in the UK, avoid the curry on the menu (unless you know there is someone in the back that can definitively cook it). Â It may sound like a close-minded rule, but it has served me well (until I avoided it, and I'm still just barely getting over the effects of this bout).
Cheers, everyone.
This place was in walking distance from the hotel I stayed at, and being that it was eve of St. Patty's Day, I headed over here for dinner and drinks.
Beyond crowded because there was a live band playing for the occasion which = less seating. It was too cold to sit outside but we snagged a spot of a group leaving. The waitress obviously hadn't had experience in a busy bar scene - she wasn't good at all.
Eventually the owner (I'm assuming) approached us as he could tell we hadn't been helped. Gave us a refill on our beers (we had previously ordered from the bartender) and took our orders. The speed of the food wasn't too bad for being crowded.. only saw the waitress at the end to collect our money (go figure).
I ordered the fish & chips which was actually delicious. Definitely my favorite thing about the place.
If the customer service were better I'd give it another star. For now though, it stays at 3 unless I visit again and have a better experience.
We finally had the Fish & Chips at Flanagan's that everybody was raving about. Â We were not impressed with the taste of the fish because it was too greasy and the fries was oily. Â The size of the fish was great but that is all that was impressive.
Too bad because the atmosphere was nice.
The Summary:
A fun pub atmosphere with great food.
The Food (We Had):
The Fish and Chips (3 Pieces & Garlic Fries)
The Fish was huge. Â Good ratio of batter to fish and delicious. Â
Not incredibly savory, but the texture and tenderness of the fish was perfect.
Garlic fries were good; not the best I've ever had but a great compliment to the fish.
Ambiance:
Fun. Â Nice bar, TV's, darts, pool. Â Fun.
The Price:
A little overpriced, but not by much. Worth it if you're in town, especially if it's late and nothing's open.
Solid, straight-ahead pub food, and a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere. Jumbo portions, excellent hand-cut "chips", and while the beer selections on tap are not extensive, they've got Green Flash (San Diego) brewery's stellar "West Coast IPA."
We showed up early on a Friday evening (me, my wife, and our 12- and 16-year olds) and were greeted and seated promptly. Shortly after that, there was an influx of business (it was happy hour still) so our server was temporarily swamped. Luckily, Kathy-- an off-duty server who was hanging with a friend at the bar-- stepped into the breach and took our orders so that things kept moving right along, and our wait was no longer than usual.
In the meantime the kids commandeered the billiard table adjacent to our table and played a quick round (yes, their youth has been misspent) before our food arrived.
I ordered the two-piece fish and chips (plenty for an average appetite, if you're saving room for beer) and the rest of the family ordered a variation on the Flanagan's burger, which comes with as many bells and whistles (bacon, avocado, grilled onions, jalapeños, etc.) as you might want.
We were all very happy with our meals, and the kids were able to get in another game of pool-- before the evening got any later and the sight of them at the table could dent the reputation of the place as a serious pub.
This is a good choice when you're visiting the Monterey bay area and want a good, honest meal at a reasonable price (which can be hard to find). And big props to Kathy for leaping in after her regular shift. That's dedication.
We drove down to Carmel for a few days - had an A/C issue the dealer had been unable fix. Â Car got too hot, so we found Honest Engine in Seaside, and based on the Yelp reviews, we dropped the car there and went to lunch. Â Nick found the problem within a half hour and had it fixed by the next day. Â He and his father were so kind, and both went out of their way to help us - to make things convenient for us. Â I highly recommend Honest Engine and thank both Nick & his father for the kind, small town hospitality we were shown!
Review Source:Tucked away in the Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel, Flanagan's is your quintessential neighborly pub. Locals and tourists flock here for the relaxed atmosphere, good food and the friendly service.
The small space features several screens, a pool table, a dart board, an outdoor patio (with firepit), a digital juke box and many Irish-inspired comfort foods. The pubby stalwarts include Flanagan's Fish 'n Chips, the fiery Buffalo Wings, the Fresh-Cut Garlic Chips (Fries), Bangars & Mash, Shepard's Pie and a host of signature burgers.
We had the Fish 'n Chips ($11.95/2-piece), the Steak Sandwich ($11.95), a basket of Garlic Chips/Fries ($3.95), Crab-Stuffed Balls ($8.95) and a couple beers. Food came out fast and served piping hot. Both pieces of my fish were plump with a nice light and crispy batter. Paired with the fresh grated garlic chips, these two calorie culprits are a worthy indulgence. The fresh-cut fries, which were cooked to order and seasoned with fresh grated garlic and onions, were a real treat.
My only complaint was it was pretty chilly inside. It was a particularly cold evening (I had on boots, a sweater and a peacoat too) and I just couldn't get comfortable. There was an indoor fireplace, which wouldn't been nice if they had it running. I'll be sure to broach the heat issue if we show up on another frigid evening.
Flanagan's offers convenient hours. They are open till 2 a.m. and serve food till closing (regular menu is served till 11 p.m. and bar menu is served till 2 a.m.). Â There is a Happy Hour available on Monday - Friday from 4:00 - 6:30pm, which features $3.00 16 oz. pints of beer and $4.00 20 oz. pints of beer.
Head to Flanagan's for great reasonably-priced comfort food with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
This place seems super cozy and chill. I came here last night for my birthday with my family, and kudos to the Bartender who gave me a free birthday shot:) I think it was a 'Grape water pop' something like that. This seems like somewhere you can just come and hang out and order some food, you dont have to drink alcohol. It was night time and there was a few locals sitting at the bar and a family having dinner. We played some pool and had some drinks. I had a good time here and will probably be back:)
Review Source:We stopped in late night. Had a great burger, fresh fries, and a cold beer. Very much an Irish Pub style restaurant. I did not go in looking for a 5 star experience but I was very impressed. Late night food and beer seekers as well as those looking for pub style ambiance and food will be satisfied.
Review Source:Great fish and chips. Definitely go for the garlic on your fries. Primarily a bar at night, she did a nice job accommodating kids during the day. Patio seating also
looked nice. At around $15 for my 3-piece fish, the price point was slightly higher than I would have liked, but the quality supports it.
Can't wait to try the fish and chips. I was craving clam chowder and decided to go with a salad. The flavor and texture of the chowder was prefect; however, the clams weren't purged of sand before cooking. There was quite a bit of sand in my bite.
I would try it again though as all the other components were spot on.
Came here for a quick lunch last week while waiting to check into our hotel. I was craving fish and chips, and this spot came up on my Yelp app. The location is very cute, little stores and restaurants all around and pretty flowers/scenery too:)
Both my husband and I ordered the fish and chips (regular portion) which comes with 2 well sized pieces of fish and lots of yummy fries. I would suggest that you get the garlic on the fries, I realized without it on there the fries would be a bit bland and normal. The garlic is yummy, so give it a try! The fish is very good, the only suggestion I'd have is to season the batter just a bit more. It came off as a tiny bit bland, but other then that I think the fish is GREAT. The best thing about the meal was the tartar sauce! I don't like tartar sauce very much but this was SO good, we asked for the waitress to bring out more to dip our fries in. Pretty good prices as well, and the service was good. I'd suggest coming here for a quick, casual lunch on the their porch so you can enjoy the weather. Then, get down to the beach as soon as possible....because after all, this is Carmel.
Yay for Yelp reviews because I wouldn't have found this place otherwise. I was craving fish and chips and went here. The fries/chips were some of the best fries I have ever had. They were roasted, cooked we, and had fresh onion over them. Mmmmm. The fish was good. Less fried than other fish. Service was good too and the ambiance of the place was okay. Thought it would be scenic but it's more or less in a plaza. Prices were reasonable.
-1 because they allow smoking on the patio outside. Moved due to smelling the fumes from cigarette smoke from 2 old ladies (I have allergies).
Would recommend.
After a tired but fun afternoon of driving the back way into Carmel Valley, we needed a place to unravel. Â It was Memorial Day, so we didn't expect anyone to be open. Â But right around dinner time, as our stomachs gnarled angrily, Flanigan's appeared like a shining beacon of Irish goodness.
Small and quaint on the inside, but having lots of patio seating, Flanigan's has about  20 tables--8 inside and maybe 12 outside.  Inside is nice--a small pool table and darts, and a not-overdone pub theme with some personal touches.  Service was REALLY good--super friendly and attentive.
We decided on the steak sandwich, and I gotta say...best I've ever had! Â The meat was AMAZING (we found out why later-- a special cut of sirloin that was very hard to get). Â Perfectly cooked and easy to eat (not a chewy, tough portion to be found--this was a GREAT steak!). Â The sandwich and garlic fries were about $12. Â Add a $4 bottle of Magner's irish cider and I was very pleased!
The people at the bar were friendly and talkative--it felt like a real Irish public house! Â There was even and real Irishman having a pint and playing darts!
I highly recommend--wifey and I will be frequenting Flanagan's!
Closed out day 2 of our road trip up to San Francisco with a beer and fish n chips from Flannigans. It's a charming little pub with a few other patrons. The beers and cocktails set us back $5 a pop, which is relatively cheap in my experience. The fish and chips were on point; not overdone nor soggy, just tastey!
Only complaint was that the screwdriver the bartender mixed up for me was rather weak. Felt like I essentially paid $5 for a half glass of OJ, which is what any Denny's would charge for a full glass of OJ.
We found this place based on Yelp reviews while we were in Carmel. Â Now remember, we travel with a pack of toddlers.
We walked in on a Sunday night and the bar was full but the tables were empty. Â We walk in and literally the entire bar turns around and stares at us. Â What, like bringing toddlers to a pub is not normal? Â We almost aborted at this point but hey, we were hungry and after seeing a dead sea lion on the beach, we wanted fish and chips.
We ordered the 3 piece fish and chip ($16) and the steak sandwich ($13). Â Both were excellent - fish and chips were meaty, perhaps just a bit overcooked (yes, they are deep fried but the crust was a bit blackened). Â
This place was actually great for toddlers. Â Loud music playing which drowned out the baby's cries and other random toddler screams. Â There were lots of TVs, a pool table, darts (ouch!), and lots of activity. Â We left full and satisfied.
Bottom line: Places that seem inappropriate for toddlers can be quite good for them. Â Hooters, were we come!
What we shared:
- Beer
- Hot Wings
- Fish n Chips
By far the hot wings were the best thing we ate! Nice buffalo flavor with real chunks of crumbled blue cheese on top and cooked just right. Â mmm mmm
Fish was huge portions, tasted fresh and cooked well. Â I liked the skin on fries. Â
Both the waitress and bartender, who I think was the owner, had great service. Â They were both very knowledgable on the beer selection and slight differences between each one and they were super helpful in providing suggestions.
This would definitely be a return stop on our next trip to Carmel.
This is my new favorite watering hole. The menu is outstanding, I haven't had a bad dish yet. But, even more so is the unbelievable level of help & service. We recently went on a chilly night, and due to the size of our party, had to sit outside. The owner went to a neighbor  and got us space heaters to stay warm. Above & beyond the call of duty! I was shocked and surprised. I've been here several times now and just love it!
Review Source:We went here with a $25 Living Social voucher while vacationing in Monterey. Â It was a drizzly Sunday night and a little later than the dinner hour so there weren't a lot of people there. A few locals at the bar and one other table of diners. The place is small and nice and cozy with a very pub-like feel (natch). We got a table right in front of the fireplace and the very friendly, cute waitress took our order quickly and brought our drinks fast. The food came out piping HOT. The fish and chips I got were delicious and the fish tasted very fresh. I don't remember what Jeff got but I do remember he liked it a lot.
I would definitely go back if I were in the area.
The crab cakes are delicious!! If you're stopping in, order them!
I wanted to try something new that I don't see often close to home, but it was kind of a mistake. I had some sort of beef stew that was only OK and I ended up eating more of my dinner partners fish and chips instead. If you love food like I do, you know how bad it blows to have the sucky plate at the table.
That being said, the service was awesome and the atmosphere was really comfortable.
If I lived in the area I'd definitely go back. As a tourist, there are other places to be checked out before round two at Flanagan's.
This place ruined my neighborhood pub for me. Â Came here while the bf and I were staying at the hotel next door and JeeZus did we have the time of our lives. Â We got to know the owner, Joe, who can pour a delicious pint o' Guinness and serve up the best Hot Wings I've ever had. Â The bf and I had just gotten back from vacation in Brazil and had a great time swapping some stories with Joe, whose wife, we learned, happens to be Brazilian.
This place is solid... dart board, pool table, awesome food and beer selection and an awesome crowd + owner to chat with and hang. Â
....Licking my lips just thinking about those hot wings :P
If a pub is measured by its staff, then Flanagan's deserves five stars!
While on vacation with the hubby, we wanted to grab a drink before a sushi dinner. Â We happened upon Flanagan's and were so lucky to do so.
As we walked in, we were greeted by one of the owners, Luciana, and staff. Â Huge smiles and so welcoming.
Cut to two hours later. Â Five drinks down between the two of us and such fun conversations with staff and customers. Â Great happy hour specials and the food (although we didn't have any) looked yummy.
I totally recommend this pub and can't wait to come back.
