The location is convenient and they have plenty of parking. The building and the decor are beautiful. Wife really liked it. I did too. Old, but very clean and taken care of. You get the feel of the time period, but none of the mustiness.
As for the food, it was fried chicken sunday. We got that and 3 sides. Mac n cheese, mashed potats and asparagus. Chicken was cooked perfectly but I didn't enjoy the amount of italian seasoning in the crust. Too much butter in the mashed potats too. The bacon gravy is delicious and helped to take the edge off the italian seasoning. Mac n cheese was good. Could've used a little more macaroni. Forgot that we got bacon biscuits as an app. Those were good with their chili butter!!
So with all the complaints, why the 4 star rating? Beautiful building, great service and even tho the meal I had I didn't Love, my wife did and even I enjoyed. Didn't hate it, just didn't Love it like her. And even tho everything was very rich, I can tell by how well things were prepared and served, the kitchen knows what they are doing.
I will come back for sure but not on fried chicken sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing what else the kitchen can do.
Wife says get an Mansinthe, Russian style!
Great experience! Romantic and cool. The fire pits outside are very inviting and create a wonderful atmosphere. The staff members were very informative and made the experience extra special by providing a lot of guidance and information about the menu. Recommend the scallops and the cheddar biscuits.
Review Source:I seriously loved this place. All the way from the layout and style of the restaurant to their menu and service.
We came here to celebrate my birthday and had made reservations for an early dinner. It was around 630PM and the bar area had quite a few people in it, but we were taken to a dining room and it looked like we were the first ones there. We were met by our server who offered lots of help with the menu. I ordered the Commander in Chief and my husband got the Second Base. Both drink were nicely done.
For appetizers we got the pork belly and their bacon cheddar biscuits. I recommend both. I probably would have eaten an entire meal made of the pork belly small bites plate if it existed. All of the components were just spot on. The biscuits were hardy and came with a type of maple butter which was pretty good and not overly sweet.
For dinner we ordered the mahi mahi which I posted a picture of and the calbrezo sausage pizza. Both were very good as well. The night couldn't be better. Service was great. The atmosphere was pleasant. Drinks were delicious.
I will definitely be back for social hour as there is not really another place comparable to 1833 in Monterey.
