We saw this restaurant during our last visit to Newport and decided to eat there this time around. The menu just looked appealing and the place is gorgeous!
Fluke was an excellent restaurant! the only reason they are not getting a 5star is because they did not have everything on the menu!
Almond Filled Bacon Wrapped Dates as an appetizer- EXCELLENT! The bacon was crisp and the salt balanced the dates. The Almond added that crunch to the bite justin the right amount!
Pan Seared Scallops--Jasmine Rice, Chinese Broccoli, Snap Peas, Blood Orange Sauce
Scallops were HUGE and cooked perfectly! Melted in our mouths. The plate of food was balanced and everything was so delish!
Rabbit Orechiette--Caramelized Onion, Escarole, Fava Beans, Oven Roasted Tomato
The orechiette was perfectly cooked, the rabbit was delicate and juicy. The sauce ... oh my!
Service was impeccable! the wait staff and Maitre D were very courteous and were knowledgeable of the menu THOROUGHLY
Unfortunately they did not have couple items on the menu we really wanted to try like the soft shell crabs and couple other things. Again, it was explained to us and everyone were very nice and apologetic about it.
Oh and dessert- Coconut milk panna cotta and Goat's Cheesecake with Candied Rhubarb & Local Honey were both delicious! we are new yorkers and we are happy to say that Goat Cheesecake was worth it!
Had a great meal there last night- dinner for 4 and we were late on a very busy night and they held our reservation for us!
Drink and wine selection is fantastic and the crispy oysters i had as an app were amazing. Dinner was good too, portions are on the small side but definitely enough. I had the pork belly and it was one of the best dinners I've had out in a while. Our view of the sun setting from the top floor was the icing on the cake!
"...let us be more simple and less vain." Â ~Jean-Jacques Rousseau
During a recent visit to Fluke, we decided to share a few appetizers and one entree along with a couple of glasses of wine. I told our server that we'd decided on our appetizers, and asked if she could please return, at her convenience, to take our entree order. I was told that the kitchen only allows customers to order their entire meal at once, and that she would come back to take our full order when we were ready. I'd never heard of this before, have you? When she returned, we'd ask to make a few changes to the dish, and our server pointed out: "food modifications kindly declined" typed at the bottom of the menu in small print. I didn't think were asking for much since locally grown vegetables are available all over Aquidneck Island.
I should stop here and note that I'm no fan of publicly displaying diet preferences, but since food is such an essential part of life, it is sometimes difficult to avoid. Nobody wants to be the energy absorbing dinner guest drawing attention to herself. For several restaurants around town, vegetarianism offers far-reaching flexibility, particularly since now, more than ever, it's easier to avoid any type of CAFO by learning the exact source of your food. Newport attracts visitors from all over the world who know this, so I wonder how they're able to pull this off while staying busy.
Later, we were offered a dessert list, but ...snicker...passed because we weren't sure how they would respond since it wasn't ordered w i t h dinner. On a side note, this is not a terrible place if you simply want to stop by for a drink since the beautiful bar on the third floor overlooks the water. Â We ordered less than we would have normally, but chose to tip unsparingly to express our empathy for our server, hoping she will find a friendlier place to work, and soon.
This place is a must do on any trip to Newport. Â The menu is a great mix of exceptional small plates that accompany cocktails (bacon wrapped dates) and excellent entrees (pork belly). Â The cocktail/wine list is extensive and the drinks are generous especially for Newport. Â The service is friendly and attentive. Â The views from the top floor bar at sunset can't be beat and the dining rooms are bright and spotless. Â My family has dined here numerous times over the years in both summer and winter, and it has never disappointed. Â A gem on the wharf.
Review Source:The food here is outstanding -- I never knew I liked oysters until I came here. Can't say enough about the lightly sautéed oysters and calamari apps. My husband and I both had local fish, simply prepared. Dessert was a revelation, too, though I can't recall specifically what we had. Bottom line: quality food, great views, can't miss.
Review Source:We went here for Newport Restaurant week. Â Hidden on one of the streets leading to the wharf, it's a cute, eclectic little restaurant nestled amid hustle of tourist traffic. Â It has a modern vibe, almost NYC loft style with clean lines. Â It has a cozy ambience despite the high ceiling. Â It does echo, but not annoying to us.
We dabbled in the restaurant week menu as well as ordered a few other starters. Â Drinks were very affordable (6 dollar average) and made well. Â
Food:
Cheese platter was such a good sampler. Â We didn't get the right cheese on the third choice, but it's ok. Â Bread was yum!
The fried oysters were delish! Â Anything fried is good, but these oysters were so fresh and the breading was light and crisp. Â Definite must have if you love seafood.
The pork belly main dish was average. Â Have had better at my mom's house actually. Â But I am Asian so I am picky with an Asian-styled dishes.
I had the rabbit pasta. Â Not bad either. Â Pretty standard. Â I have had better rabbit and pasta.
Dessert... it was ok too. Â Cannoli and chocolate flan were alright.
I think this place would be more suited as an app and drink place. It would be lovely to take in the ambience, enjoy good conversation and partake in pickies. Â Cocktail and appetizer parties probably would be nice here. Â As far as dinner, I've had better places in terms of entrees.
Oh, you do have to pay for parking unless you're lucky and can find free parking on the side streets somewhere. Â It's 10 dollars.
I came here with a friend on Saturday, where coincidentally this restaurant was part of Restaurant Week. It's a perfect timing to explore Newport this way!
The restaurant was pretty interesting in terms of the structure (lot's of stairs for a swanky restaurant). I'm amazed at how they were able to make the limited spaces feel cozy and intimate! We did not make a reservation ahead of time when we arrived. However, the awesomely nice staff members helped find us seating quickly in the bar area. The view from our seats (it's NOT at the high tables) was amazing. Huge window framing the perfect sunset going down...it's a nice way to start dinner!
Food: the fried oysters with the red chili mayo was scrumptious. The Acadian Redfish with rainbow swiss chard was fresh and cooked perfectly. For the desserts (my favorite), I have no words to describe how amazing they are! The chocolate stout creme brulee is pretty dense, strong, and rich. The Goat's cheesecake is creamy and tangy. I did wish they added more rhubarb to contrast the flavors more, but it's still delicious! Also in addition to the dining, you will get your round of breads and olive oil/hummus to eat in between your meals.
I also appreciate the fact that Fluke also provides virgin drinks. Although it was a bit pricey, the drink I got (something with lime and mint crushed together) was pretty good and lasted me throughout my meal!
In my opinion, it seems like Fluke provided bigger portion of their meals compared to the Boston's Restaurant Week's selections I checked out in the past. I know for a fact that one day when I'm back in Newport, I will stop by here again!
Went to Fluke with a group of friends on a Friday for Restaurant Week. We had a reservation and where seated upstairs under a skylight. This would be a problem because the restaurant gets hot as people pack in so they crack the window to cool things down. Probably fine in a couple weeks when its 60, but that night it was in the 30's and the girls where all freezing. So I would close it, and ten minutes later the owner would open it, and then I would close it, and he would open it....
Anyway for restaurant week the chef produced a array of underwhelming dishes. The appetizers where simple and most ok. Then the main courses came out and the disappointment set in. Between all of us we tried everything but the vegetarian option. The Pork belly was a blob of fat. Yes, pork belly is how bacon starts, but at least bacon tastes good. My redfish was greasy and tasted more like fried catfish.
For desert the consensus was that the goat cheese cheescake was the best. The chocolate creme brulee was overpowering, and the cannoli was also tried. Mixing the cheesecake with the creme brulee was pretty good.
I dunno, left Fluke thinking I had no reason to come back again.
Well first of all, the location is great. Perfect spot for a wine bar, with a great view. Unfortunately my husband and I were very disappointed with the food. I ordered their coconut shrimp which was simply grilled shrimp in a bowl without any coconut flavor whatsoever. Their bacon wrapped dates were on the dry side, and the fries were nothing special. Do not plan to go back unless I just want a glass of wine overlooking Newport.
Review Source:I absolutely adore Fluke. My boyfriend and I usually like to reserve a spot at the bar earlier in the evening. The cocktails here are top notch, the gentlemen behind the bar are great at what they do. Things can get a bit pricey here, so we enjoy ordering cocktails and appetizers/small plates. The steamed mussels are my favorite in town. Everything I have tried from the menu has been delicious. The bar is located on the top floor (which also has several table seatings available) and offers amazing views of the harbor. I highly recommend grabbing a cocktail and sitting at the bar for sunset. Perfect for a date.
Review Source:I have wanted to try this restaurant for a very long time and booked online a week in advance asking for a table with a view and instead got a table that was very drafty every time the front door opened. The food was good and the $6 cocktails were as well. I just wish that they had given us a better table.
Review Source:Love this place! If you are down in Newport for the weekend or you are lucky enough to live in the area, this is a restaurant you must go to. It is right in the middle of downtown so easily walkable from the main garage or any of the street parking in the area. The restaurant itself is very cozy and has a warm, upscale feel while also relating to the seaport vibe of the area.
The food was delicious, definitely get a fish dish (hey that rhymes) if that is your thing because they do an excellent job preparing them and they are always fresh. The wine is another great reason to stop by as they have an impressive list of moderate priced wines that every day customers can afford. This is something that I don't often find on "impressive" wine lists; and it was quite refreshing.
If you are in the Newport area make sure to stop by for a delicious plate of fish and a glass or 3 of wine.
Stopped in here last night for some drinks and dessert. I loved my Moscato di Asti and butterscotch panna cotta. The pumpkin pie was good but it tasted more like butter and is actually a tart. Not like pumpkin pie at all really. Nice plating. I love the decor of this place, though I do think hardwood floors would do wonders. The staff was really great and very friendly. They even kept refilling our water long after we were done. Some places just ignore you as a way to get you out. Would definitely return
Review Source:This is such an adorable little Newport gem. This restaurant is located in the heart of Bowen's wharf, central to the downtown strip. It's also little and somewhat unassuming. So it would be easy to pass this little wine bar by if you're not looking for it.
When you enter the store front, there are adorable wooden steps leading up to the main dining room, and then you ascend further upward to get to the 3rd floor bar where the view of the ocean is fabulous.
I'll be the first to admit that the tappas are very small and somewhat pricy, but the quality of food is just so excellent. I won't say that I can afford to be a regular here, but my fiance and I loved the place so much that we decided to host our rehearsal dinner there next summer!
I'm personally not much of a drinker, but my fiance promises that the cocktails are earthly and excellent. If prices were just a little bit more affordable, this would be five stars all the way. Love it!!
I'm a big fan of lobster and was disappointed the first time we visited Fluke and found they don't have lobster. One taste of our entree however quickly made this one of our favorite places in Newport. Â On our recent visit my wife had beer braided short ribs, braised for eight hours... no knife required. Â I had grilled pork bellies which were as juicy as anything I've eaten. Â
The owners are every present and very pleasant conversation.
Wait for the table in front of the window and watch the people go by.
We headed to Fluke for Newport Restaurant Week and were not disappointed. Â The service is astounding and the food was delicious. Â
Shining stars were the desserts (goat cheese cheesecake and butterscotch panna cotta) and a delicious cocktail (Juniperotivo), but the starters and entrees were also wonderful. We'll be back to try some of their regular menu items soon.
*BAR REVIEW ONLY*
Stopped in at Fluke for a drink at the end of our Newport ghost tour. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess who had no problem with us just stopping for a cocktail. She quickly showed us to a table, and promptly poured us water (thank goodness -- it was HOT that night!). I had a "Georgia Peach" themed cocktail that would've bumped my review to 4 stars if it hadn't been quite so sour. My friends' cocktails were DELICIOUS though. All in all, nice ambience, pleasant staff, and worth a stop if you're in the area.
I have been to some of the eating establishments at Bannister's Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island. I hope I can come back here and give a review about the food.
My wife was out window shopping with her mother and sisters, being on a bum ankle I needed to sit and decided to grab a drink. The sign outside Fluke read "$5 Margaritas and $2 Stella's". Now tell me what you would have done in this situation?
The margaritas were probably one of the best that I've had, and I am not a fan of margaritas. Â So I had a few while I watched the helicopters covering the America's from the third floor window, and watched the actual race on the television.
I would never go back.
The food was great, our waitress was wonderful, an the view was fantastic. Â The manager/owner ruined the entire experience.
At the end of our meal, before we even got the check, he lets us know that he needs the table and we had to leave. Â We had been there for 2.5 hours, but we had ordered 2 rounds of appetizers, a dinner, and coffee. Â As far as I know we weren't delaying any portion of our meal, the food just came out at a reasonable pace. Â
If he wanted to get rid of us, he should at least have the check sent to us and give us an opportunity to clear out. Â Instead he made us feel bad, when we didn't deserve to.
We wanted to let him know that we thought it wasn't handled appropriately, all he did was humor us, then tell us he was right, and walked away shaking his head.
The evening was memorable, but it would have been a nice memory had the manager not interfered.
After reading mixed reviews we decided on trying it after all especially in the pouring rain. Had to wait for 15 minutes at the bar to get a table. the bartenders were not to friendly but made great drinks. The sunset like martini had an great touch of lemon verbena which I am now on the mission of growing. The bartender had me clasp it and rub to bring out the flavor before putting it in my drink, very cute touch.
The dates with bacon are a must have and I don't even like either of those ingredients. I got the mushroom risotto and my boyfriend got the sea bass which complimented each other really well (totally planned). I really enjoyed the food here, highly recommend listening to the waitresses recommendations.
I came here recently for restaurant week, and I must say, I enjoyed every bit of it. The hostess was polite and courteous when I made my reservation over the phone. While dining, the manager came over to my table and made sure I was happy with the service and food. As far as restaurant week, I was impressed because it had good food with good portion, and very reasonable price. If you are from NYC, you should know that restaurants in NYC serve small portion and use relatively cheap ingredients for the restaurant week menu. Well, it's not the case here.
Kudos to Rhode Island!
Fluke is a fairly new restaurant, but Chef Jacques Pépin is pretty well known in this neighborhood, and especially by many aspiring chefs. They are located in the heart of downtown Newport, Rhode Island, overlook the Wharfs with spectacular harbor and sunset views of the Narragansett Bay.
Made a reservation for 2 on a Friday night. I was told on the phone that there were only seats at the bar, so we went with it. When I got there, I asked if a table was available and they made it work. Then they took our coats to make room at our table. Great start!
The ambience upstairs at the bar is real relaxed with a great view of the water. Tables and bar were well spaced so we didn't feel cramped. But it did feel a bit like an NYC location. We liked it.
Our waitress (Laura) was awesome. Very knowledgable about the wine, dinners, desserts, etc. She was also very outgoing and attentive.
My gf and I took part in the restaurant week menu and we're glad we did. She had the Arugala salad and I had the Garlic Roasted Shrimp. Both were very good. For dinner, we both ordered the Pan Roasted Chicken. Probably the most tender chicken I've ever tasted. It was damn good...oh...so was the side of Risotto with Squash.
Neither dessert really stood out, but they were both good.
We were never rushed, bread was replenished, water was always full, food was great...would definitely recommend.
This is fine dining. Â Small plates, small portions. Â All dishes are well thought out and excellent. Â If you want cheap touristy food there are plenty of place within feet of Fluke but if you are looking for something unique and different then Fluke is it.
It is not cheap but if if you want to treat yourself it is the perfect pl.
These good reviews are absolutely a fluke! Don't come here unless you want to spend $40-50 on dinner and leave hungry. Let me elaborate.
After two separate friends recommended this spot as a "must-dine" for dinner, I made a 9:30 reservation for a Friday night. As we were led upstairs, I observed people eating bread, which was an encouraging sign, since I was pretty starving.
No bread was to be had by us, but we ordered drinks and looked at the menu. I wasn't stoked by a tiny list of offerings that were mostly seafood---but in that fancy way where you're not getting a big hunk of juicy salmon, you're getting truffle flavored scallops in bergamot sauce or something.
I decided to have small plates, and ordered the white bean crostini($7), and lobster and avocado salad ($15). My companion ordered a plate of scallops ($32).
My crostini consisted of three tiny bread crackers with a houmus-like spread on top. My "salad" was a 4" diameter circle of greens, avocado, and lobster chunks that tasted fine but took me all of 2 minutes to eat.
The scallops plate had 4-- count 'em-- 4 scallops and nothing on the side.
For some masochistic reason, we ordered dessert (peach cobler), which actually rocked. At $8, it was reasonable, and I ate every last bite of my half because I was starving.
So, 1 beer, 1 rum cocktail, no bread, crostini, salad, scallops, dessert, leaving hungry: $103.
Don't bother.
We ate here last month, and I'm finally getting around to Yelping my thoughts. We were two couples, and we had reservations for our evening. My first disappointment was when we were led up to the 3rd floor to our table, which was right next to the bar. I didn't comment on this as I really didn't want to be "that guy" who makes a fuss about a table. However, I do think after considering it for a while that if you make reservations in advance - like a week - you should not get seated next to the damn bar.
We started off with some apps, which led to my second disappointment. I ordered the Cheese & Charcuterie with the choice of 5 items. I don't remember the exact items, but I was very surprised by the skimpy portions. The charcuteries at Nick's On Broadway, and Chez Pascal were far superior, in quality and quantity.
The dishes we all got were good, but nothing that was mouth-watering, or special. The portions were all a bit on the small side, and generally I'm not one to favor quantity over quality, but give me a plate of food, not a snack!
Someone got a squash soup, which I didn't taste but got good remarks, another got the roasted beet, radicchio, fennel, walnuts, and blue cheese salad, which was very good. I had grilled pork tenderloin with a melange of sort of Mediterranean flavors. It was good, but not great.
Desert is not something I usually get excited about - I'd much rather have meat and pasta - and I had a taste of a smore-type thing that left me unimpressed. Probably fine, but just lost on me.
It's a nice place, with an interesting menu that falls a bit on execution. As the Supertramp song says, "Give A Little Bit", and they would hit on more cylinders than they are now. Also, god help anyone at the bar who's had one or two too many getting down three flights of stairs at the end of the night. Bar at top = bad idea.
The service at Fluke is fantastic - our waitress couldn't have been better, and we even met the owner and had a very interesting chat with her. Everyone was friendly, profesh, and organized.
The drinks and wine list were awesome. I had something called a Pomanderini, which was a combo of tangerine and pomegranate liquors mixed into a fab martini. They even had my favorite wine by the glass!
The food... ok, the apps were good. We had bacon-wrapped almond-stuffed dates and a gorgeous beet and fennel salad and we were super excited for dinner based on the scrumptiousness of those. However.... dinner was more of a 'meh'. My chicken was just okay, and I kept being distracted by thoughts of what I would do to improve the recipe. My hus had the scallops and couldn't even finish them due to their saltiness and "something odd-tasting" about them. Â
Perhaps we're spoiled up here in Providence, but we were a little disappointed in the entrees and Fluke. Go for a cocktail, a glass of wine and some tasty nibbly apps - you won't be disappointed in those!
I don't even know where to start!!!!
I had never been to Newport, RI Â don't know a sole in this city and we were only there this one afternoon. So like any loyal yelper in need of advice for dinner I turned here.
First ---how this restaurant could have anything less than 5 stars is down right confusing!! Â
roasted peaches, prosciutto and mustard, who would think of this combination, delicious, kiss your face
Second --- This menu was so interesting that I could not settle on just one big entree and had a few different small plates. It was just all so yummy. Two of the smaller plates I ordered was the lamb meatballs and a side order of the green onion couscous, together these with the sauce from the meatballs made for such an amazing combination.
My husband had the swordfish and said it was absolutely the very best swordfish he had ever eaten (and we live in Hawaii, he should know)
Thirdly---Their staff from the hostess to the sweet girl helping our waitress, everyone was beyond on their game. Laura (our waitress) was every bit white tie without the stuffiness of a white tie. I could even begin to ask for anything before it appeared before me. Â I believe her to possibly be a foodie psychic and they are lucky to have her
Lastly---Homemade desserts and pressed coffee. I had the roasted strawberry shortcake. It was like little cookies of heaven with cream and cooked strawberries deliciousness.
I've never been to a restaurant that so like to roast up some fruits but man oh man did I LOVE IT
I would take a detour on any trip up the coast just to eat at this restaurant again
Do you ship to Hawaii :(...
Okay, I'll start by saying I visited Fluke on a semi-holiday weekend. So I can kind of attribute some of my issues with the meal to the holiday rush. However, that said, it still was a pretty meh meal.
First the good. The location is great and the ambiance is nice. The view is lovely (come at sunset) and they were very nice about accommodating our request for a different table.
Now the not so good -- our reservation was not a late one, yet by the time we arrived, there were several dishes that they were out of. The service issues continued as we sat with empty water glasses for most of the meal and we were rushed through courses only to have to wait and wait for the next. The manager claimed these service issues were because most of the staff had taken the weekend off -- but really, if you knew you were going to have high traffic wouldn't you find subs?
The food is nothing extraordinary but it's not bad considering the price. Â I think the experience of the table next to us sums up the night...one patron had ordered a fixed price menu but was so tired of the bad service, she said she'd rather leave then wait/receive her dessert course. Like Fluke, while probably fine tasting, it just wasn't worth it.
Two of the three dishes that my wife and I tried at Fluke were fantastic: the seared scallops and the crab cakes. Â The only thing that fell flat -- and it was a resounding failure -- was the vegetable "risotto."
In all fairness, risotto is a questionable call when dining on the waterfront, but my mind was a bit frayed from the red eye that morning and I wanted something light with vegetables. What I got was a pilaf made with long-grain rice, topped with a tomato-cream sauce. Not all'onda.
When the server saw that my rice dish was basically untouched, she did ask whether there was anything wrong with it. At least she asked, but the $20 pilaf remained on the check.
With a fun personality and relatively forward-looking menu, Fluke is a fine addition to the dusty Bowen's Wharf set. Just stick with the seafood and you should have a pleasant meal.
We've been attempting to sample restaurants we've never been to before, and last night we decided to give Fluke a shot. Â We had reservations for 6:15 and we're seated promptly on our arrival at that time. Â We noticed that we were not getting seated on the first level of the restaurant, which is the second floor of the building, but on the second level (third floor), which also was where the bar is located. Â The hostess seemed very proud of the fact that she was seating us by the window, at "the best seat in the house", which did have a nice view of the harbor.
We noticed right away that it was quite noisy in this area, as the bar was full and the first of the night's Final Four games was on the TV. Â And when we got to the table, it was set up as a four-top, but the hostess pulled the second half of the table away to set it up as two two-tops. Â I was a little concerned that the second table was placed only a few feet from ours. Â Hmmm, not promising.
Anyway, our server soon arrived and was warm, efficient, and professional the entire evening. Â The menu is rather limited, being based on fresh seasonal ingredients. Â We ordered a couple of cocktails, which were pretty good, the calamari, which was very nice (crisp, light, not greasy), and my fiancee' had the swordfish, which she liked, and I had the crab cakes. Â The crab cakes were okay, but they were made with shredded crab meat, while I prefer lump crab meat, like I had at Oceanaire last month. Â Still, even with that, the crab cakes were good.
We had an upside-down pear tart for dessert, which was just okay.
Overall, I think our dining experience was lessened by the loudness of the area in which we were seated. Â Halfway through our meal, a couple of women were seated at the other two-top which was right next to ours, which made any type of private conversation impossible, with the combination of the noise necessitating raising our voices to be heard and the other diners being literally at our elbows. Â The limited menu was also a little disappointing; luckily, we can generally always find something to eat on any menu, but I think we would have appreciated a few more choices. Â The food was generally good, though, and while the servings weren't large, we left feeling satisfied and not hungry. Â The price of our meal was a little high, but understandable for Newport. Â
If we decide to dine at Fluke again, and as we left we said to ourselves that we would be willing to give it another shot, we will definitely request seating on the lower level to avoid the noise and crowd.
This is a really great restaurant. Made reservations this past weekend for our romantic getaway. We both had the flounder. It was perfectly seasoned with the best tasting polenta I've ever tasted. Â If you are lucky enough to have a window seat you'll have great views of Bowen's Wharf. Nice for people watching. They have great signature cocktails some of which go to raising funds for breast cancer research. The hostess was especially sweet and our waitress was very nice. I would definitely go back.
Great for groups. Be careful with parking. It can be expensive. If you can walk to the wharf.
Fluke are voracious bottom dwelling flatfish, bigger and toothier than their smaller cousin the flounder. Â Being migrants to Newport from June through September, yet considered locals at the same time, we are kindred spirits. Â And boy are they delicious! Â When a friend suggested our group check out Fluke for cocktails after a disappointing dinner elsewhere, I was hoping the experience would be as rewarding as catching the real thing in Narragansett Sound. Â
Sure enough, the establishment lived up to their name-sake. Â The cocktail menu stretches the limits of imagination. Â Everything is mixed with freshly squeezed juices of all citrus varieties (and rhubarb, really? yes), and the muddling is befuddling: lemon verbena? ginger? are you kidding? Â I envy those bartenders. Â I could have stayed for hours, days even, conjuring dreamy concoctions, though descending from their lofty 3rd floor perch would be quite a challenge.
Given the memorable drinks, I jumped at the opportunity to try dinner several weeks later with a group of 6. Â Comfortably seated at a corner table by the bar, the onslaught of appetizers began, the most memorable being snacks of dates and the freshest olives I've tasted, the least our small plate of calamari. Â The native striped bass was broiled to a perfect medium slightly rare, and the fennel roasted red pepper and basil pesto served an interesting accompaniment. Some of our party had to settle on second choices as certain items were sold out, but were not disappointed. Â The only real disappointment I suffered was the verdicchio, which was a tinnier whimpier version of the nutty full bodied Italian white I'm accustomed to. Â The waitstaff kept pace with boisterous lively crew demonstrating occasional cult-ish qualities.
Fluke gets 5 stars for its drinks and 4 for its fare, and since halves aren't allowed, I'm rounding up for the name,
I went to Fluke with a small group of people (about 10), and as far as I could tell, everyone had a really great time. Â They have a decent selection of wine by the glass, a good balance of surf vs. turf (and it's hard to keep that balance in Newport), and the food is both good and reasonably priced.
I had the duck, and loved it. Â They somehow managed to get the duck to taste like it had been barbequed in the smoky Southern style, while preserving the rich taste typical to duck. Â One of my fellow diners had the lobster, which was done very minimally (lobster + butter, nothing else), which is usually the best approach. Â Hard to find anything to improve fresh-caught lobster.
Everyone had a great time, and the staff was wonderful. Â Great food + great service + reasonable price is 5 stars any day of the week.
