I was on my way to Portland by way of the Yakama Reservation. Â I hadn't had lunch, and my tummy was being mad. Â I was about to drive through the wilderness to make it down to the Columbia River Gorge, and so I looked around for options. Â Taco truck here, taco truck there, fast food, or gas station food. Â
Then BAM! Â My spidey sense tingled (actually it's my Fry Bread Sense). Â I hadn't had fry bread in ages, but I could still detect it. Â I pulled over to the tent and got in line. Â
I didn't want an Indian Taco--I always have issues with them. Â They smell so good, there's so much food, but I'm just an Indian Taco rookie. Â I end up like a victim of an Indian Taco Grenade. Â Food fragments are all over me and the immediate vicinity. Â Blood red tomatoes make it look like a lethal injury. Â And of course all my clothes are stained and my face is sloppy looking.
Long story short: Â going for fry bread.
It was $2, and the mother grabbed some dough from the pail and placed it in the boiling grease. Â Now I've made plenty of fry bread in my day. Â I thought I had time. Â So, I went back to my car, snapped a few photos, and walked back expecting to see the mom still fryin' my bread. Â Nope. Â It as already done, on the plate, and with a grease-soaked napkin over it. Â Man, so in under a minute, she had my bread ready to go. Â She's good. Â
The fry bread was $2. Â I also decided to get some pop (yeah, I said "pop"! Â We're in Eastern WA, people!), and then was on my way.
Oh man! Â This fry bread was yummy. Â it was about 10" in diameter. Â It was lightly crunchy on the outside, but soft and light on the inside (I was probably getting diabetes with every bite). Â I had it plain (less mess---see Indian Taco Grenade above). Â I downed it within a few miles. Â It tided me over till Portland.
Now, this stand isn't always here (on a patch of grass in a Yakama Tribal government office parking lot). Â I asked the daughter how often they set up.
"Whenever my mom's in the mood" she smiled back.
I could live with that (as long as my Fry Bread Sense still tingles true).
